To clear an app’s cache on a Google TV device, open Settings > Apps, select the affected app, choose Clear cache, and confirm. If the app is not shown, select See all apps first. This removes temporary files for that one app; it does not remove your account, subscriptions, or the app itself.
What clearing the cache fixes
An app cache is a collection of temporary files an app keeps on the television to load screens, images, playback components, and other frequently used content faster. Those files can become corrupted, outdated, or unusually large. Clearing them gives the selected app a clean temporary-file store the next time it runs.
Google presents cache clearing as one troubleshooting action, not a guaranteed cure. It may help when one app is displaying errors, behaving inconsistently, loading slowly, or failing to start. It will not repair an account problem, an expired subscription, a service outage, unsupported content, or a failing internet connection. If the problem continues, follow the broader troubleshooting sequence later in this guide.
The procedure applies to an individual app installed on the Google TV device. It does not clear every app’s cache at once and does not clear the cache of the Google TV mobile app on a phone.

Clear an app’s cache on Google TV
You do not need a USB drive, cleaning utility, paid service, or other physical product. The entire operation is performed with the TV remote and the device’s Settings menu.
- Go to the Google TV home screen. Press the Home button on the remote if you are inside an app or another screen.
- Open Settings. Select the gear icon or the on-screen Settings label, depending on the software version and manufacturer interface.
- Open Apps. This menu manages applications installed on the TV.
- Choose the affected app. Select the app that is crashing, buffering unexpectedly, displaying an error, or otherwise misbehaving.
- Open See all apps when necessary. Some installations show only a short list initially. Select See all apps, then scroll to or search for the app you need.
- Select Clear cache. On the app’s information page, choose Clear cache. Do not choose Clear data unless you intend to reset the app as described below.
- Confirm the action. Approve the confirmation prompt if one appears. The temporary files are removed for that app.
- Open the app again. Return to the Home screen, launch the app, and test the action that originally failed. The first launch can take slightly longer while the app recreates temporary files.
Repeat the process only for other apps that show their own symptoms. Clearing the cache of an unrelated app does not generally change the behavior of the app that is having trouble.
Where to find the option when menus look different
Google TV menus can vary by television manufacturer, software version, region, and the way the manufacturer presents Android TV settings. The labels may be arranged differently even though the relevant destination is still the app’s information page.

- Look for a gear icon or a menu named Settings from the Home screen.
- Look for Apps, Applications, or an equivalent app-management category.
- If the first app list is short, open See all apps before assuming the app is missing.
- After selecting an app, look for an information or storage section containing Clear cache.
Google’s general Android TV storage guidance notes that its storage steps may not work on every television running Android TV. That qualification concerns those storage instructions; it is not a declaration that the Google TV cache path fails on a particular model. If your labels or menu hierarchy differ substantially, use the closest matching Apps or application-information menu and consult the television manufacturer’s support instructions for that model.
Clear cache, clear data, restart, update, and factory reset: what is the difference?
These actions have different scopes and consequences. Choosing the wrong one can turn a quick troubleshooting step into an account-sign-in or device-setup task, so use the least disruptive action that addresses the symptom.

Do not substitute Clear data for Clear cache simply because both controls appear on the same screen. Cache clearing is reversible in the sense that the app can recreate temporary files. Clearing data is a reset of that app’s local state, and a factory reset is a reset of the whole device.

What to do if clearing the cache did not solve the problem
Work through the following sequence and test the affected app after each relevant step. This avoids erasing information before you know which action addressed the symptom.

1. Restart the Google TV device
Restarting closes the current operating session and can release a process that is stuck even after the app’s temporary files have been removed. Use the device’s available restart command or power-cycle method recommended for your model, then wait for the Home screen to load completely before testing the app again. Google notes that Quick Start steps can vary by device, so the exact power-menu wording may not be identical on every television.
2. Check for system and app updates
Look in the TV’s system-update area for a pending Google TV or Android TV update. Also open the relevant app’s store page and check whether an app update is available. An old app build can continue to crash after its cache has been cleared, while an old system build can cause compatibility problems across several apps.

3. Confirm the selected account profile
Google’s device troubleshooting flow includes checking the account profile in use. If the TV has more than one profile, switch to the profile that normally uses the affected app and test again. This matters when the symptom is missing content, unavailable purchases, or a configuration that appears to have disappeared rather than a purely technical crash.
4. Force-stop the affected app
For slow or laggy performance, Google recommends closing background apps with Force stop. Open the affected app’s information page through Settings > Apps (using See all apps when required), choose Force stop, confirm, and then launch the app again. Force-stopping is different from clearing cache: it ends the running process but does not remove temporary files or app data.

5. Clear the app’s data only when necessary
If the app still fails after a restart, updates, the correct profile, force-stop, and cache clearing, return to its information page and consider Clear data. Read the confirmation text carefully. This can remove the app’s local preferences and stored session, so have the account credentials or sign-in method available before proceeding. Afterward, open the app, sign in if requested, and reapply any settings it no longer remembers.

6. Contact the app developer for recurring crashes
For an app that continues to crash after checking for updates and force-stopping it, Google recommends contacting the app’s developer. Include the app name, the TV model, the software version shown in the device settings, what you were doing when it failed, and which troubleshooting steps you already completed. That information helps distinguish an app-specific defect from a device-wide problem.
7. Treat factory reset as a last resort
A factory reset is not an expanded form of cache clearing. It removes the device’s data and requires you to complete setup again, reinstall apps, reconnect services, and restore preferences. Use it only after less destructive options have failed and after you have confirmed that you can recover the accounts and settings you need. Back up or record any information that the TV does not synchronize automatically before starting.

Google TV device versus the Google TV mobile app
The instructions above are for the Google TV software running on a television or other Google TV device. They should not be used as though they were the cache controls for the Google TV app on a phone.

- iPhone or iPad: Google directs users to the Google TV mobile app’s settings. iOS manages app storage differently from Android, so it does not present the same Android-style Clear cache control.
Clearing the mobile app’s temporary files does not clear the cache of the corresponding app on the television. Perform the operation on the device where the symptom occurs.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Looking only at the short app list: Open See all apps when the affected app is not immediately visible.
- Choosing Clear data by accident: Read the control label and confirmation screen; data clearing can remove local settings and sign-in state.
- Resetting the whole TV first: A factory reset erases device data and is disproportionate to a single-app cache problem.
- Clearing every app without a symptom: Target the app that is failing so you do not create unnecessary first-launch delays across the TV.
- Assuming cache clearing proves the network is healthy: Playback and loading failures can also come from connectivity, account, service, or app-version problems.
- Using phone instructions on the TV: The Google TV mobile app and a Google TV device have separate cache-management paths.
After you clear the cache
Launch the affected app and reproduce the original problem once. A first run may be slower because the app is rebuilding temporary files. If the symptom is gone, no additional reset is required. If it returns, record whether it affects only one app, only one account profile, or the entire device; that distinction determines whether the next useful action is an app update, a profile check, a restart, force-stop, data clearing, or developer support.
Keep the factory-reset option in reserve. It erases all data on the device and should be considered only when the less destructive steps above have been exhausted and you are ready to perform setup again.
