Yes—you can safely clear DirectX and GPU shader caches when you use the built-in cleanup method for your platform. In Windows, the least risky approach is Disk Cleanup: remove only DirectX Shader Cache, then let your game rebuild shaders on its next launch. If you use NVIDIA graphics, its driver-managed cache is a separate layer and should be cleared through the NVIDIA App procedure before deleting its cache files.

Deleting these compiled files does not uninstall a game, remove DirectX, or erase save data. The normal side effect is a slower first launch or temporary stutter while shaders compile again.

What a DirectX or GPU shader cache actually stores

Games send shader programs to the graphics driver. A shader controls a small part of rendering, such as lighting, shadows, reflections, texture effects, or post-processing. Before the GPU can use many shaders, the driver compiles them into a form suitable for the particular game, driver, operating system, and graphics hardware.

A shader cache stores those compiled results on disk. On a later launch, the game or driver can reuse a compatible result instead of compiling it again. That is why a cache can shorten startup and reduce compilation work during play.

Microsoft describes Windows D3DSCache as an operating-system-integrated, versioned DirectX Shader Cache. The D3D11 documentation describes an OS-managed cache that stores compiled shaders on disk to accelerate future application runs. Windows also integrates this cache with Disk Cleanup.

The word “cache” matters: these files are expendable copies of generated data. If they are removed, the software can generate them again. They are not the DirectX runtime, the game installation, configuration files, or saved games.

Which cache should you clear?

“Shader cache” can mean several different layers. Clearing one does not necessarily clear the others, so identify the scope before deleting anything.

Cache layer Scope Safest documented action What to expect
Windows DirectX Shader Cache (D3DSCache) Operating-system cache used by DirectX and supported drivers Use Disk Cleanup and select DirectX Shader Cache Windows removes the selected cache files; they are rebuilt as applications run
NVIDIA driver shader cache NVIDIA driver-managed compiled shader data Temporarily turn Shader Cache Size off in the NVIDIA App, reboot, then remove the NVIDIA cache files The next game launch recreates the files; the setting can then be enabled again
AMD driver cache AMD driver-managed data, with locations and controls varying by driver version Use the current AMD support instructions for your installed driver Rebuild behavior is normal, but a universal folder path should not be assumed
Steam or another launcher’s per-game shader cache Launcher- and game-specific downloaded or generated data Follow the current launcher documentation for that title Do not confuse shader-cache removal with clearing a launcher’s download cache

For most Windows troubleshooting, start with the Windows DirectX cache. Move to a GPU-driver cache only when the symptoms continue and the system uses that driver. Do not delete unrelated folders merely because their names contain “cache.”

Safest method: clear the Windows DirectX Shader Cache with Disk Cleanup

Disk Cleanup is the general-purpose Windows route because it identifies the cache category for you instead of requiring a guessed folder path.

Before you start

  • Close the game you are troubleshooting.
  • Close graphics-heavy applications such as a 3D editor, video renderer, benchmark, or another game.
  • Save work in other applications. Cleanup itself should not affect documents, but closing programs prevents files from being in use.
  • If the issue is intermittent, note whether it is a crash, stutter, unusually long loading, or a visual artifact. That observation will help you judge the result.

Windows cleanup steps

  1. Open the Windows search box, type Disk Cleanup, and launch the utility.
  2. If Windows asks which drive to scan, choose the Windows/system drive, normally the drive containing the operating-system installation.
  3. When the first results appear, select Clean up system files if that button is available. Choose the system drive again when prompted. This second scan exposes system-level categories that may not appear in the initial user-file scan.
  4. In the list of file categories, check DirectX Shader Cache.
  5. Leave other categories unchecked unless you deliberately want those files removed. The goal of this procedure is a shader-cache reset, not a general deletion of downloads, previous installations, or personal files.
  6. Confirm the cleanup and wait for Disk Cleanup to finish. The amount of time depends on the quantity of data and the drive.
  7. Launch the game again. If it has a shader-compilation stage, allow that stage to complete before judging stutter or loading performance.

Microsoft documents Disk Cleanup as the Windows utility for selecting temporary and system-file categories, and DirectX documentation identifies the D3DSCache integration with that utility. This is preferable to deleting an arbitrary directory copied from a forum post.

How to clear the NVIDIA shader cache

NVIDIA’s driver cache is separate from the Windows DirectX cache. NVIDIA’s support procedure uses the NVIDIA App to stop the driver from immediately recreating files while you remove them.

NVIDIA’s documented sequence

  1. Open the NVIDIA App.
  2. Open Graphics, then open Global Settings.
  3. Find Shader Cache Size and set it to Off.
  4. Apply the change.
  5. Restart the computer. Rebooting ensures that processes holding cache files have closed and that the changed driver setting is active.
  6. After Windows starts, delete the NVIDIA shader-cache files from the user’s local NVIDIA directory under AppData. The exact visible folders can vary with the driver and installation, so remove only the cache files identified by NVIDIA’s current support guidance rather than deleting the entire AppData or NVIDIA tree.
  7. Start the game and let it run long enough to regenerate its shaders.
  8. If you disabled the setting only for this cleanup, return to the NVIDIA App and restore the desired Shader Cache Size value after the files have been removed.

NVIDIA explains that Shader Cache Size controls the maximum disk space used for shader compilations. Turning it off temporarily is part of the cleanup sequence; it is not a recommendation to run permanently without a cache.

Why not simply delete an NVIDIA folder first?

A running game, driver service, or overlay can have a cache file open. Deleting files while they are in use can fail partially, and the driver may recreate them immediately. Disabling the cache, rebooting, and then removing the files gives you a predictable reset. Do not delete the entire NVIDIA App data directory, driver installation, profiles, or unrelated logs when your goal is only shader data.

AMD and launcher caches: use the right scope

AMD drivers and game launchers can maintain their own shader-related caches. Their controls and folder locations can change between driver releases, operating-system versions, and installation choices. There is no single folder path that is safe to present as universal for every AMD system.

Use the current AMD support instructions for the installed driver when you need an AMD-specific reset. For Steam or another launcher, consult that launcher’s current instructions for the individual game. A launcher’s download-cache reset is not the same operation as deleting compiled shaders: it can affect downloads, authentication, or local launcher state and may require signing in again.

If you cannot verify which layer is responsible, clear the Windows DirectX Shader Cache first. That is the narrowest broadly documented action. Only proceed to a driver- or launcher-specific procedure when the symptom remains and the software’s own instructions identify the files.

What clearing the cache changes—and what it does not

It removes compiled data

The operation deletes generated shader binaries and related cache metadata. The game, DirectX, and the graphics driver still have the source or intermediate information needed to compile those shaders again.

It can make the next run slower

The first launch after deletion may take longer. A game may also pause or stutter while you enter a new area because shaders are being compiled again. This is the expected cost of removing the data that normally accelerates later runs. No universal duration or frame-rate improvement applies: compile time depends on the game, driver, hardware, and how many shaders it uses.

It does not normally erase game saves

Using Disk Cleanup for DirectX Shader Cache or following NVIDIA’s shader-cache procedure does not uninstall the game or remove save files. Save data can live in separate locations, including cloud storage or a game-specific profile. Do not select unrelated cleanup categories or delete a whole game-data directory when you intend only a shader reset.

It is not a guaranteed performance fix

A stale or corrupted cache can contribute to crashes, unusual stutter, or rendering problems, so clearing it is a useful diagnostic step. It cannot repair a broken game update, a defective driver installation, damaged game files, overheating, insufficient memory, or a hardware fault.

When clearing shaders is worth trying

After a graphics-driver update

A new driver can change how shaders are compiled. If a game begins crashing or stuttering immediately after an update, a fresh cache can remove compiled data created under the previous driver. Clear the relevant cache, then allow the game’s complete shader-compilation process to finish.

After a game update

A major patch can replace rendering code or assets. Old compiled results may no longer be useful. Clearing the Windows cache is reasonable when the game’s own support instructions suggest a cache reset or when symptoms began directly after the update.

When one game has persistent shader-related symptoms

If other games behave normally but one title has visual artifacts or repeated compilation failures, first use the game’s own repair or verification feature. Then clear the relevant cache if the problem continues. A cache reset is more informative when you record the original symptom and test the same scene afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When disk space is unusually low

Shader caches consume disk space, and NVIDIA’s Shader Cache Size setting exists to control the maximum space allocated to driver shader compilations. Removing old cache files can reclaim space temporarily, but the cache will grow again as games run. It is not a substitute for managing large games or personal files.

Symptoms after cleanup and how to interpret them

What you observe Likely interpretation Next action
Longer first launch, then normal play Shaders are being rebuilt Let compilation finish and test again
Short stutters while entering new areas Additional shaders are compiling on demand Continue the test after the game has visited the affected areas
No change at all The cache was not the cause, or another cache layer remains Verify game files and review driver and game updates
More crashes or missing visuals Possible driver, game-file, or hardware problem rather than a healthy rebuild Stop deleting folders; restore the driver/game state and troubleshoot the underlying fault
Windows reports files could not be removed A process may still be using them Close games and graphics tools, reboot, and repeat the documented method

A cautious troubleshooting order

  1. Reproduce and classify the symptom. Record whether it is a crash, stutter, long load, or visual artifact and when it occurs.
  2. Close the game and clear only the Windows DirectX cache. Use Disk Cleanup and select only DirectX Shader Cache.
  3. Restart the game and wait. Do not compare performance during the first seconds of a rebuild with a fully warmed cache.
  4. If the system uses NVIDIA and the symptom remains, use NVIDIA’s sequence. Disable Shader Cache Size in the NVIDIA App, apply, reboot, remove the identified NVIDIA cache files, and relaunch.
  5. Verify the game files. Use the launcher’s built-in verification or repair feature when crashes or missing assets continue.
  6. Check updates and drivers. Investigate a game patch, graphics-driver release, or known compatibility issue instead of repeatedly deleting caches.
  7. Escalate when the symptom is broader. Problems across several games, visible corruption, system crashes, overheating, or memory errors indicate a wider system issue.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Deleting random folders from AppData or the Windows directory. A folder name containing “shader” or “cache” does not prove that it is safe to remove.
  • Deleting while a game is running. Close the game and graphics-heavy applications first.
  • Clearing every cache at once. That removes your ability to identify which layer mattered and can create unrelated launcher or login problems.
  • Judging the game during the rebuild. The first run is intentionally different because compiled data is missing.
  • Using developer-only controls as a consumer cleanup method. Microsoft’s ShaderCacheControl API is intended for developer-mode scenarios, not routine end-user maintenance.
  • Assuming a universal AMD or Steam path. Locations and procedures vary; use current first-party instructions for the installed version.
  • Expecting a guaranteed FPS increase. Cache deletion is a reset and diagnostic action, not a performance tweak with a predictable gain.

About Microsoft’s manual cache guidance and developer APIs

Microsoft’s manual file guidance is limited to documented cache files in a working directory. That narrow instruction should not be expanded into permission to browse through system folders and remove anything that looks temporary.

Microsoft also documents ShaderCacheControl, but it is a developer-mode API. It is not a replacement for Disk Cleanup for ordinary players. If you are maintaining a development build, follow the API documentation and the project’s own cleanup rules; for installed games, use the consumer procedures described above.

How often should you clear shader caches?

There is no routine schedule. A healthy cache is doing its job by avoiding repeated compilation. Clear it when a documented support procedure calls for it, after a driver or game change that produces a new problem, or when you are testing whether cached compiled data is involved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeatedly deleting caches after every launch only forces the same compilation work again and can make startup and traversal stutter worse. If the cache immediately grows back, that is normal: games and drivers recreate it as they run.

The technical size detail that should not be overgeneralized

Microsoft documents a default maximum value-file size of 128 MB for D3D12 disk-cache sessions. That is an API default for a particular cache mechanism, not a universal Windows, NVIDIA, AMD, or game cache-size limit and not a recommended setting for players. User-facing limits are controlled by the relevant driver or application.

Quick decision guide

  • Windows game has new stutter or shader-related errors: start with Disk Cleanup and DirectX Shader Cache.
  • NVIDIA system still has the problem: use the NVIDIA App’s disable–reboot–delete sequence, then re-enable the setting if appropriate.
  • Only one launcher title is affected: check that game’s repair and shader-cache instructions before touching launcher-wide data.
  • AMD-specific issue: use current AMD documentation; do not rely on a copied universal path.
  • Problem survives a clean rebuild: verify files and investigate drivers, patches, system stability, or hardware.

Clearing a shader cache is safe when it is scoped to the documented cache category and followed by a normal rebuild. Treat it as a reversible diagnostic reset: remove the generated files, allow compilation to complete, and then troubleshoot the underlying game or driver if the original symptom remains.
