First check your washer’s owner’s manual to confirm that it has a lint or debris filter designed for consumer removal. If it does, unplug the machine whenever the access procedure requires servicing, place a shallow container and towel under front-load access points, remove the filter, rinse it under warm or running water, brush off stubborn lint, clean the housing, dry the parts as directed, and reinstall the filter securely. Many newer washers—especially top-load models—do not have a user-cleanable lint trap at all.
Why you may not find a lint trap
“Lint trap” can describe two different components: a screen that catches fibers during washing or a drain-pump filter that catches lint, hair, coins and other debris before water leaves the machine. Their locations and cleaning methods depend on the washer’s format, model and age.
Manufacturers have also changed designs over time. GE says many top-load systems made from 2001 onward removed the fine-mesh filter beneath the agitator because improved pumps and larger hub openings handle lint without consumer maintenance. GE identifies Spacemaker top-load models made since 2014 as an exception with consumer-removable basket filters. Maytag likewise warns that not all washers have removable filters and that newer models often have no filter intended for consumer cleaning.
If the manual does not describe a removable filter, do not pry off panels, pull out the agitator or disassemble the drain system to search for one. Use the manufacturer’s model-specific support instead.

Where the filter is usually located
| Washer format | Typical filter type | Common location | Water-spill risk | Consumer access |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Top-load with agitator | Lint screen or basket filter | Inside the center agitator or along the tub rim | Usually low during filter removal | Only if the manual identifies a removable screen |
| Top-load without a serviceable screen | Integrated pump and wash-system filtration | No user-accessible lint trap | Not applicable | Do not disassemble; follow support instructions |
| Front-load | Drain-pump/debris filter | Behind a small lower access hatch, often near the front bottom edge | High; trapped water can drain when opened | Common on models whose manuals provide a cleaning procedure |
Samsung’s top-load instructions, where a filter is fitted, describe removing the filter case, opening it, brushing it under running water, drying it and clicking it back into position. Samsung’s front-load pump filter is commonly behind the lower access panel.
How to clean a removable filter
- Confirm the exact procedure. Find the washer’s model number and read the use-and-care guide. Verify that the filter is intended for consumer removal and note any instructions about draining, power or drying.
- Make the machine safe. For front-load access, disconnect power if the manual or service procedure requires it. Whirlpool’s safety guidance states: “Disconnect power before servicing. Replace all parts and panels before operating.” Never operate the washer with a panel or filter cover removed.
- Protect the floor. Put a shallow bowl, tray or container beneath a front-load filter and place a towel around it. Water remaining in the pump or hose may spill as soon as the filter is loosened.
- Remove the filter carefully. Turn or release it exactly as the manual shows. Wear household gloves if you prefer when handling wet lint, hair, sharp objects or accumulated residue. Do not force a stuck cap; forcing it can damage the housing.
- Clear the debris. Pull away lint and foreign objects. Inspect the filter for cracks, a distorted seal or missing pieces; a damaged filter should be replaced with the model-compatible part specified by the manufacturer.
- Rinse the filter. Hold it under warm or running water until the mesh and channels are clear. Maytag recommends a soft brush or cloth for stubborn dirt, and Samsung specifies a brush for its top-load lint filter. Use a soft-bristle brush rather than a hard wire tool that could tear mesh.
- Clean the housing. Wipe the filter cavity, threads, gasket and surrounding area with a cloth. Remove lint or grit that could prevent the seal from seating.
- Dry and reinstall. Let the filter dry for the period stated in the model instructions, then reinstall it in the correct orientation. Tighten or lock it fully; Samsung says its top-load case should click back into its original position.
- Close up and test. Replace the access cover or panel securely, restore power, and run a short rinse or drain cycle while checking for leaks.
How often to clean it
| Manufacturer guidance | Interval | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Maytag | At least once a month | Current guidance accessed in 2026; larger households or heavily soiled loads may require more frequent cleaning. |
| Samsung (front-load pump filter) | At least once per month or about every 40 washes | Samsung US support guidance published in 2024; use whichever interval occurs more frequently. |
These are examples, not a universal schedule. Your manual takes precedence, particularly if the washer has a self-cleaning filtration system or does not provide a consumer-accessible filter.

Signs the filter needs attention
- Clothes remain unusually wet at the end of a cycle.
- The washer drains slowly, stops before the final spin or displays a drain-related error.
- Cycles take longer than normal or the pump sounds strained.
- Musty or sour odors persist despite normal detergent use.
- Lint, hair or small objects are found around the drain area.
A blocked filter can contribute to poor draining, wet loads, odors and eventual service calls. If cleaning does not restore normal draining, check the manual for hose and pump checks and arrange qualified service rather than opening sealed components.

Do not assume a missing screen means the washer is defective. Many current top-load designs route lint through the pump and drain system without a maintenance filter. Confirm the model number in the manual, search the manufacturer’s support page for “debris filter,” “pump filter” or “lint filter,” and follow only the procedure documented for that model. If the documentation does not authorize removal, leave the machine intact and contact manufacturer support.

A soft-bristle cleaning brush is appropriate for stubborn lint on models that permit filter removal. If the original filter is cracked, warped, missing its seal or lost, obtain a replacement listed for the exact model; filters that look similar are not necessarily interchangeable. A shallow container, absorbent towel and gloves are useful for front-load pump-filter service.
