Clean vinyl records by handling only the edge and label, removing ordinary dust with canned air, and storing discs upright in a cool, relatively dry, clean, stable environment. Clean a turntable stylus only according to its cartridge maker’s instructions; Ortofon, for example, directs users to brush along the cantilever toward the stylus tip and says it does not recommend solvents for records or styli. There is no single fluid recipe proven safe for every record format and cartridge.
What routine vinyl care is meant to prevent
Most everyday contamination reaches a record or stylus through handling and storage. Finger oils and grime on the playing surface can become part of the debris the stylus encounters. Dust on the record can be transferred to the stylus, while a dirty stylus can affect playback and carry contamination from one record to another. The safest routine therefore starts with prevention rather than aggressive washing.
The Library of Congress advises handling grooved discs by their edge and label areas, keeping handling clean, and keeping playback equipment clean. Its guidance covers collection care rather than a universal home-audio recipe, so the record, cartridge and cleaner manufacturer remain important when you move beyond ordinary dust removal.
Use the Library of Congress guidance on care, handling, storage and cleaning of audio-visual materials as the baseline. Its broader care page is also available at loc.gov/preservation/care/record.html.

Handle a record without adding contamination
Use the edge-and-label grip
- Wash and dry your hands before handling a disc.
- Lift the record by its outer edge with one hand and support it at the label area with the other.
- Keep fingers away from the grooved playing surface, including the lead-in and run-out areas.
- Set the record down on a clean surface or directly on the turntable platter; do not slide it across a dusty table.
The edge-and-label grip is not just a museum technique. It prevents skin oils from entering the grooves and reduces the amount of residue that later has to be removed. Hold the disc this way when taking it from its sleeve, placing it on the platter, turning it over and returning it to storage.
Keep the playback area clean
Dust on the platter, mat, tonearm or cartridge area can migrate to a record. Before playing, make sure the work area and the accessible parts of the playback equipment are clean. Follow the turntable maker’s instructions for any platter, mat, tonearm or cartridge maintenance; do not apply a household cleaner to equipment simply because it is safe on a table or cabinet.
Remove ordinary dust from a record
Use canned air for loose surface dust
For ordinary visible dust on a grooved disc, the Library of Congress says to “use canned air to blow away dust.” Hold the record by the edge and label, position it so the dust can leave the playing surface, and use the canned air according to the can’s directions. The aim is to dislodge loose particles without touching the grooves.

It does not establish that canned air removes fingerprints, oily residue, mold or waxy deposits, and it is not a claim that one dusting method outperforms every commercial product.
Do not improvise a treatment for mold or waxy deposits
Mold and waxy exudates are different problems from loose dust. The Library of Congress directs readers to specialized disc-cleaning guidance for those conditions rather than presenting a general-purpose household treatment. If you see growth, a sticky film or a deposit that does not behave like dry dust, stop the routine dusting process and consult the specialized guidance linked from its cleaning page: Library of Congress audio-visual materials care guidance.
Do not turn an unverified mixture of water, detergent, alcohol or another solvent into a standard recipe for every disc. Record compounds and historical formats differ, and the available guidance does not prove that a particular home solution is safe for all of them.

Decide whether a liquid cleaner is appropriate
Separate record cleaning from stylus cleaning
A record-cleaning product and a stylus-cleaning product serve different surfaces. A liquid intended for a disc is not automatically suitable for a stylus, cantilever or cartridge body. Conversely, a stylus brush is not a substitute for cleaning a record. Keep the two jobs separate in your tools and in your decisions.
Check the format before using a labeled product
Product labels can set format limits. Audio-Technica’s 2025 phono-cartridge catalog identifies its AT634a record-care solution as intended for LP/EP use only and specifically not for shellac records. That is a compatibility statement for that product, not a rule that all LP/EP solutions are safe for all records. Read the label for the exact cleaner and the exact record format before applying anything.
The catalog is hosted at Audio-Technica Phono Cartridges 2025, page 59. Because catalog information can change, verify current instructions on the manufacturer’s own packaging or documentation.
Understand what the available evidence does not establish
The Library of Congress says the effectiveness of the cleaning solution described on its page has not been compared with commercial products and is not guaranteed. That means you should not treat the page as a performance ranking, and you should not claim that a named product or method is proven superior on the basis of that guidance alone.
When instructions conflict, give priority to the record or cartridge manufacturer’s compatibility directions. If the format or material is uncertain, avoid applying a solvent until you have authoritative instructions for that specific disc.

Clean a turntable stylus safely
Start with the cartridge maker’s manual
Stylus assemblies are delicate, and cartridge designs differ. Locate the manual or care instructions for your cartridge before touching the stylus. The Library of Congress also advises following the playback-machine manufacturer’s maintenance instructions and says that more thorough playback-equipment maintenance should be handled by knowledgeable professionals with appropriate equipment.
Ortofon’s published brush method
Ortofon’s FAQ says to use its fiber brush along the cantilever toward the stylus tip. In other words, the brush movement follows the assembly toward the front rather than pushing back against it. Ortofon also states: “Ortofon do not recommend the use of solvents of any kind for cleaning of either record surface or stylus.” This is Ortofon’s manufacturer guidance, not an industry-wide standard. Read the complete instructions at Ortofon’s stylus and record care FAQ.
- Stop the turntable and secure the tonearm according to the turntable’s instructions.
- Confirm that your cartridge maker permits the brush or stylus-cleaning method you plan to use.
- Use the specified fiber brush or applicator with a light, controlled motion along the cantilever toward the stylus tip, following the maker’s direction.
- Do not apply a solvent unless the cartridge maker explicitly instructs you to do so.
- Return the tonearm to its rest and check that no loose debris remains on the stylus before playing a record.
The steps above describe Ortofon’s direction where applicable; they are not a universal instruction for every cartridge. If your cartridge documentation gives a different method, follow that documentation instead.
When to stop and seek service
Stop cleaning if the stylus appears bent, the cantilever is misaligned, the assembly is loose or the contamination will not release with the maker-approved method. Do not compensate for a suspected mechanical problem by scrubbing harder. For detailed playback-machine maintenance, use a qualified technician with appropriate equipment, as the Library of Congress recommends.

Maintain the turntable around the cartridge
Use the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule
Turntable maintenance can involve parts that affect tracking and alignment. The Library of Congress recommends that playback-machine maintenance follow the manufacturer’s instructions and that more thorough work be performed by knowledgeable professionals. Consult the turntable and cartridge manuals for procedures involving the tonearm, tracking system, cartridge mounting or electrical connections.

Keep cleaning tools from becoming contamination sources
- Store the stylus brush so its fibers remain clean and protected.
- Keep record-cleaning supplies separate from tools used around the cartridge.
- Do not place a used brush on a dusty shelf and then return it to the stylus.
- Keep the platter and mat free of loose debris before placing a record down.
These habits reduce the chance that a tool transfers dirt back onto the surface you just cleaned. They do not replace the cartridge maker’s instructions or professional maintenance when a mechanical fault is involved.
Store records to prevent repeat cleaning
Stand records upright
The Library of Congress recommends upright storage for grooved discs. Store records vertically in a way that keeps them supported rather than leaning for long periods. Use a clean, stable location where the discs are not exposed to avoidable dirt or pressure.
Choose a suitable environment
The recommended home environment is cool, relatively dry, clean and stable. Avoid locations with repeated swings in temperature or humidity, and keep records away from sources of dirt. Environmental stability matters because preventing contamination and material stress is easier than trying to correct it after storage damage occurs.

Replace unsuitable sleeves carefully
The Library of Congress identifies high-density polyethylene sleeves as an optional replacement category when appropriate. Sleeve replacement should be treated as a storage decision, not proof that a particular sleeve is suitable for every collection or historical format. Handle the record by its edge and label while transferring it, and keep the new sleeve clean.

Troubleshoot common cleaning situations
The record has a light layer of visible dust
Handle it by the edge and label, use canned air as directed by the Library of Congress, and return it to a clean sleeve and upright storage. If the residue remains, it may not be ordinary dust; do not escalate automatically to a solvent.
The stylus has collected debris after playback
Stop the turntable, consult the cartridge manual and use only the approved brush or applicator. Ortofon’s method is a controlled stroke along the cantilever toward the stylus tip. If debris persists or the assembly looks damaged, stop and seek qualified service.

Do not treat this as routine dust. Use the specialized disc-cleaning guidance referenced by the Library of Congress, and confirm that any proposed product is compatible with the record format. Ortofon’s solvent warning also means that a solvent should not be assumed safe for the stylus.
You own shellac records as well as LPs
Separate the formats in your cleaning decisions. Audio-Technica’s catalog specifically excludes shellac records from the AT634a solution, while LP/EP labeling does not automatically cover shellac. If a product label does not explicitly cover the format, do not infer compatibility.
Playback equipment needs more than surface cleaning
Follow the turntable manufacturer’s service instructions. For work beyond routine care, use a knowledgeable professional with appropriate equipment, consistent with the Library of Congress recommendation.
A repeatable care routine
- Prepare a clean work area and clean, dry hands.
- Remove the record by its edge and label; never touch the grooves.
- Inspect the surface and classify the contamination as loose dust or something requiring specialized guidance.
- Use canned air for ordinary dust, following the Library of Congress recommendation and the can’s directions.
- Check the cartridge maker’s instructions before cleaning the stylus.
- If the maker permits brushing, use the specified brush and direction; Ortofon’s published direction is along the cantilever toward the stylus tip.
- Do not apply solvents unless the relevant manufacturer expressly authorizes them.
- Return the record to a clean sleeve and store it upright in a cool, relatively dry, clean, stable environment.
- Arrange professional maintenance when the task involves a suspected mechanical fault or work beyond the manufacturer’s routine instructions.
What this approach can and cannot promise
This routine is designed to limit handling contamination, remove ordinary loose dust and keep stylus care within manufacturer instructions. The available Library of Congress guidance does not provide comparative performance data against commercial products and does not guarantee a cleaning result. No numerical cleaning-performance claim is established here.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFollowing a source’s instructions also does not make every product interchangeable. The meaningful comparisons are the task (record or stylus), the contamination (dust or deposit), the format (such as LP/EP or shellac) and the manufacturer’s compatibility directions.
