If your Mac’s “System Data” or “Other” bar looks unexpectedly large, there isn’t a single folder—or a universal delete button—to clear it. System Data is a broad macOS category that can include both system-managed files and data belonging to apps. Start by checking Storage settings, then remove or move files you can identify and safely manage.
What is System Data on a Mac?
Apple describes System Data (called “Other” in some macOS versions) as a general category for Apple and third-party files that do not fit a more specific storage category. Its contents can include logs, caches, virtual-memory files, runtime resources, temporary files, fonts, app support files and plug-ins. Some are created and managed by macOS; others belong to apps.
That means the category is not a measure of junk, and its contents and size can change with your Mac’s state. Storage settings do not offer a select-all-and-delete control for System Data. Manage identifiable files through Finder or the apps that created them rather than deleting unknown items from system locations.

How do I check what is using storage?
Open the Storage view for your macOS version. Category names and displayed amounts can take time to update after you remove files, and macOS may classify or recount storage differently as conditions change.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- macOS Ventura 13 or later: Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage.
- Earlier macOS versions: Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage.
Review the named categories and any recommendations before trying to reduce System Data itself. Look for large, recognizable items—such as downloads, media, old device backups or unused apps—that you can choose to remove or relocate.
Free space by removing files you recognize
Apple’s storage guidance suggests reviewing files and app content you no longer need. The right place to remove data depends on where it came from:
- Downloads and other personal files: Review them in Finder and delete only files you no longer need. Empty the Trash when you are sure you want those items gone.
- Unused apps: Remove apps you no longer use, following the app’s or Apple’s removal guidance. Deleting an app may not remove all of its associated data.
- Old device backups: Check for backups you no longer need and remove them through the relevant device-management tools or storage view.
- Mail: Review junk and deleted messages, and remove attachments or messages you no longer need.
- App-managed data: Use the app that created the files to review or remove its downloads, libraries, caches or other stored content. Avoid deleting unfamiliar support files simply because they appear large.
Use storage recommendations only if they fit your files
Storage settings may offer recommendations such as iCloud storage options, Optimize Storage and automatic Trash emptying. Read the description of each option and consider what it changes before enabling it.
Rank #2
- High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
iCloud options can keep some content available on demand rather than stored locally, and they depend on your iCloud plan. Optimize Storage can remove some already-viewed Apple TV media and older local email attachments when space is needed. Automatic Trash emptying can remove items you might otherwise have retrieved from the Trash, so choose it only if that trade-off works for you.
Should I delete caches or Time Machine snapshots?
Usually, do not make manual cache deletion your first step. Apple says macOS clears caches and logs that are safe to delete when it needs space; some files are temporary, but not every cache or file labeled as a log is safe to remove by hand.
Time Machine also manages local snapshots automatically. Apple says snapshots are stored only when the disk has plenty of free space and are removed as they age or when space is needed. They are not a guaranteed explanation for a large System Data bar, and Apple says they do not take space needed for ordinary downloads, copying or installations.

- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
If you specifically need to remove local snapshots, Apple’s documented manual approach is to temporarily turn off automatic Time Machine backups in settings and wait for the snapshots to be removed, then turn backups on again. This can remove local recovery history, so consider that trade-off before doing it. Do not treat it as a general fix for System Data.
Move large media or project files to external storage
If Storage reveals large photos, videos or project files you want to keep, moving them to another storage device can free internal space without deleting the files. Apple specifically identifies Photos and iMovie libraries as examples. This is separate from removing macOS-managed System Data.
- Connect an external drive that is compatible with your Mac and the library or files you plan to store.
- Use the relevant app’s guidance to move its library, or move ordinary files in Finder. For Photos or iMovie libraries, follow Apple’s instructions for the app and macOS version you use.
- Open the library or files from the new location and confirm they work before deleting any original copy.
- Keep a backup of important files; an external drive is not itself a backup if it holds the only copy.
Can Safe Mode reduce System Data?
Apple says starting a Mac in Safe Mode clears certain system caches, which are recreated as needed. It may help with a space-dependent task, such as an update, but it does not promise a lasting reduction or a fixed amount of reclaimed storage. Use it as a temporary troubleshooting step, not a routine cleanup method.

- USB-C and USB 3.1 compatible.Specific uses: Business, personal
- Innovative style with refined metal cover
- Password protection with 256-bit AES hardware encryption
- Formatted for Mac
Why can the System Data number change?
Storage figures are accounting estimates, not a fixed inventory of one folder. As macOS manages temporary files, snapshots and other storage, or as you remove content, the displayed categories may change. A large figure alone does not establish what caused it or how much can safely be deleted.
If your Mac remains nearly full or behaves unexpectedly after you have reviewed recognizable files and available recommendations, contact Apple Support. Do not remove arbitrary items from protected system locations to force the System Data figure down.
