A metadata manager can help organize a Jellyfin library by matching titles, writing local NFO files, and—if you choose—renaming media. tinyMediaManager supports that workflow, and its FAQ lists scraping, NFO read/write, and renaming among the free version’s base features. But incorrect matches still need review: the tool’s documentation supports the workflow, not a guarantee that years of mislabeled files will fix themselves.

What tinyMediaManager can do for a Jellyfin library

Jellyfin can identify media using its built-in metadata providers, but a separate manager can be useful when you also want to edit metadata locally or organize filenames and folders. tinyMediaManager describes itself as a media manager with metadata scraping, NFO creation, and automatic file and folder renaming, and it lists Jellyfin support on its official site.

Its FAQ says the free version includes base functionality such as updating data sources, scraping, reading and writing NFO files, renaming, editing, and exporting. Software tiers can change, so check the current FAQ for the features and operating-system support available to you.

The key distinction is where the metadata lives. Jellyfin can read local NFO files and gives local metadata priority over remote providers. As Jellyfin puts it, “Jellyfin can read and write local .nfo metadata files to import or export metadata from and to other programs and tools.” See its local NFO documentation.

Choose the workflow that matches the problem

Approach Best fit What to consider
Jellyfin’s metadata providers Correcting metadata while keeping the workflow inside Jellyfin. Jellyfin documents built-in providers including TMDb and OMDb, with additional providers available through its plugin catalog. See Jellyfin metadata documentation.
External manager writing local NFO files Managing metadata outside Jellyfin or keeping metadata alongside the media for reuse. Review matches before writing changes; local metadata can take priority over remote provider results.
External manager with renaming Cleaning up inconsistent filenames and supported sidecar files as well as metadata. Inspect the renaming pattern and scope before applying it. tinyMediaManager’s movie renamer operates within its configured data source.

Set up a cautious metadata cleanup

  1. Add the media folders. In tinyMediaManager, add the folders containing the relevant movies or shows as data sources, then let it identify the titles using its available metadata sources. The product site lists sources including TMDb and TVDB.
  2. Review uncertain matches. Do not apply changes blindly to titles that could match more than one release. Jellyfin notes that provider identifiers can improve identification and can be included in a movie or show filename or folder name. Its provider identifier guide explains the supported approach.
  3. Check the renaming pattern and scope. If you intend to rename files, inspect the proposed pattern and the selected data source first. The tinyMediaManager movie renamer documentation says it can rename supported video files and related NFO or artwork files according to its settings, and that it works only inside its own data source. For shows, consult the tool’s TV-show NFO format documentation.
  4. Write local NFO metadata. Have the manager write the metadata files you want Jellyfin to use. Since Jellyfin prioritizes local metadata over remote providers, an incorrect NFO can preserve an incorrect result rather than fix it.
  5. Refresh the Jellyfin library. Scan or refresh the relevant library so Jellyfin can read the updated files. Check the resulting titles and details instead of assuming every mismatch will be corrected automatically.

Why a match may remain wrong

A scraper can only use the information it can associate with a file. Ambiguous titles, unusual releases, and inconsistent naming can lead to a wrong match; the external manager does not remove the need to confirm those cases. Adding a provider identifier to a filename or folder can help Jellyfin distinguish the intended item, but it is a correction to the identification input—not a blanket fix for every metadata problem.

Also distinguish metadata cleanup from file renaming. Writing an NFO changes the local metadata Jellyfin reads; renaming changes names and may affect associated sidecars. If your priority is simply to correct a title, you may not need to rename anything. If you do rename, make sure the manager is pointed at the intended data source and that the pattern produces the layout you want.

When to use Jellyfin alone

Try Jellyfin’s own providers first if the filenames are already organized and you only need to adjust metadata. An external manager is more useful when you want to batch-edit outside the server, preserve metadata in local NFO files, or rename media in addition to scraping. Jellyfin’s guidance for movie files and folders can also help you check whether the library’s organization is compatible with its identification process.

A community member’s question about finding a free program to batch-rename media illustrates the practical need, but it does not establish how widespread the problem is or how reliably any tool resolves it. See the discussion on r/jellyfin.
