Clean up autoloaded WordPress data by measuring the current payload, identifying the options that are large or loaded unnecessarily, and then making the least destructive change: disable autoload for values needed only on limited requests, or delete a value only after proving that its former owner is gone. Back up the database first, change a small batch, and test both public and administration pages after every change.

Do not use row count or an unfamiliar option name as your deletion rule. WordPress loads the combined autoloaded payload during all-options initialization, so the practical concern is how much data is loaded on requests and whether those values are needed on most of them.

What autoloaded data is and why it matters

The wp_options table stores site settings, plugin and theme configuration, temporary values, and other key-value data. Each row has an autoload setting. When autoload is enabled, WordPress includes that option while building its all-options cache, making it available early in normal requests. When autoload is disabled, the value remains in the table but is fetched only when code asks for it.

WordPress core summarizes the risk this way: “Autoloading too many options can lead to performance problems, especially if the options are not frequently used.” That warning is about unnecessary work and payload, not a universal row-count limit. A site can have many small, legitimate autoloaded settings, while one oversized value can deserve attention even if the table contains few rows.

Most-request settings versus occasional settings

Settings read on nearly every front-end request, such as fundamental site configuration, commonly belong in autoload. A value used only by a plugin’s report screen, a one-time migration, or a handful of administrative URLs usually does not need to be loaded for every visitor. Disabling autoload in that second case preserves the setting while reducing the data initialized on unrelated requests.

Why a large value is not automatically junk

A large serialized value may be a valid configuration used throughout the site. Another large value may be a cache that can be regenerated. A name that looks unfamiliar may belong to an active plugin, a theme, or a component that changed its naming convention. Size is a triage signal; ownership and usage determine the safe action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare a reversible cleanup

Make the change operationally safe before inspecting individual rows.

  1. Create a current database backup. Use your hosting control panel, backup system, or a database dump that you have actually tested for restoration. A backup that cannot be restored is not a recovery plan.
  2. Record the WordPress version and active extensions. Autoload behavior and supported command syntax vary by WordPress and WP-CLI versions. Note active plugins, the active theme, and any recently removed software.
  3. Choose a maintenance window for testing. You do not normally need to take a site offline, but you do need time to exercise representative public and administrator pages and inspect logs.
  4. Plan small batches. Change one option, or a tightly related group, then measure and test. Large deletion passes make it difficult to identify which change caused a failure.

Measure the current autoloaded payload

Run WP-CLI from the WordPress installation directory. The first command gives a baseline total in bytes:

wp option list --autoload=on --format=total_bytes

Save the result with the date, WordPress version, and the cache state you used. The number is a measurement of the site at that moment, not a universal pass/fail threshold. No authoritative source establishes one safe autoload-byte target for every site.

List names and sizes

To see which rows contribute to the total, request option names and byte sizes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
wp option list --autoload=on --fields=option_name,size_bytes --format=csv

The output is CSV. Sort it by size_bytes in a spreadsheet or another CSV-aware tool so the largest values are easy to review. Keep the original unsorted export as an audit record. WP-CLI’s documentation shows 33198 bytes in an illustrative example; that sample output is not a recommended target for your site.

Confirm an individual autoload flag

Before changing a suspect row, check its current state:

wp option get-autoload OPTION_NAME

Replace OPTION_NAME with the exact option name. Do not infer the state from a screenshot, an old report, or a plugin’s name. The command reports what the current WordPress/WP-CLI combination sees.

Identify who owns each option

Every candidate needs an owner and a usage decision. Use the option name, the active codebase, and the software’s documentation together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check active plugins and themes

Search the active plugin and theme code for the exact option name and for calls that read, update, or delete it. Check settings pages and documentation for the component. If the value is part of an active component’s configuration, prefer that component’s own settings, update process, or uninstall routine over a hand edit.

Investigate former owners

Look at recently removed plugins, replaced themes, and migration records. A row is a deletion candidate only when you can establish that its owner is no longer installed and no remaining code reads it. “I do not recognize this name” is not sufficient evidence.

Classify the value’s role

  • Site identity or core setting: Leave it alone unless WordPress documentation or the owning workflow explicitly directs a change.
  • Active plugin or theme configuration: Keep the value and follow the software’s supported settings or uninstall process.
  • Frequently used shared setting: Keep autoload enabled when the value is genuinely needed across most requests.
  • Limited-use configuration: Keep the value but consider disabling autoload.
  • Regenerable cache: Confirm how the owner rebuilds it before changing or removing it.
  • Confirmed orphan: Delete only after backup and code/ownership verification.

Choose the least destructive fix

Use the following decision framework for each large or questionable row.

Finding Recommended action Value preserved? Typical reversibility
Needed on most front-end requests Leave autoload enabled; optimize through the owner if the value is unexpectedly large Yes Not applicable; no change
Needed, but only on specific URLs or tasks Turn autoload off Yes High; restore the flag
Owned by active plugin or theme Use its settings, update, or uninstall routine Usually Depends on the software
Former software removed and no code references it Delete the narrowly identified option after a verified backup No Restore from backup only
Core or site identity option Do not edit manually unless official documentation says to Yes Varies; avoid the change
Owner or purpose unknown Investigate; do not delete based on size or name alone Yes Preserved while investigating

Turn off autoload without deleting the value

This is the preferred intervention when a setting remains necessary but is not needed during most requests. The option’s value stays in wp_options; only its autoload decision changes.

Use WP-CLI

Run the supported update operation with the exact option name:

wp option update OPTION_NAME --autoload=off

Then verify the flag:

wp option get-autoload OPTION_NAME

Use the command output and your recorded baseline to confirm that the intended row changed. Do not assume that a successful command means the owning plugin will behave correctly; the next section covers functional testing.

Use the WordPress API in application code

WordPress provides wp_set_option_autoload_values() for changing autoload decisions without changing option values. In code, pass a mapping of option names to boolean autoload decisions, for example:

wp_set_option_autoload_values( array(
    'example_option_name' => false,
) );

Use this API only in a controlled deployment or the owner’s maintenance routine. Remove temporary migration code after it has run, and verify the result with WP-CLI or the site’s normal diagnostics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Account for code that assumes early availability

Most well-behaved code reads a non-autoloaded option when it needs it. A poorly designed component may assume that a value is already present in an all-options cache or may read the database in an unusual bootstrap phase. Test the plugin’s settings page, its public feature, scheduled tasks, REST requests, and any integration that depends on the value. If a feature fails, reverse the autoload change first, then investigate the component rather than deleting the setting.

Delete only confirmed leftovers

Deletion is appropriate only when all of the following are true:

  • The option’s former owner has been identified.
  • That plugin, theme, or migration component is no longer active or installed.
  • Searches of the current codebase show no remaining reads or writes of the option.
  • You have a current, restorable backup.
  • You have considered whether another integration, scheduled task, or custom script still uses it.

WP-CLI documents listing selected option names and passing those names to wp option delete. Adapt that pattern narrowly for the verified names rather than deleting with a broad wildcard. A precise, manually reviewed list is safer than a pattern that can match a live setting.

WordPress version and value-name cautions

Modern WordPress APIs accept boolean autoload decisions. Core documentation treats the legacy literal values yes and no as deprecated for those newer APIs. An audit that recognizes only one literal spelling can miss rows or misclassify them, so check the behavior supported by the WordPress version and the WP-CLI release actually running on the site.

WordPress also has dynamic handling that can disable autoload for excessively large values when options are added or updated. That behavior means a newly written option may not have the autoload state a developer expected. Always inspect the current flag instead of assuming that an update preserved the previous setting.

For a deeper audit of large autoloaded options, the WordPress Performance Team recommends the Performance Lab plugin. Treat it as an additional diagnostic aid, not as permission to delete rows automatically. Ownership and usage verification still determine the safe fix.

Verify every change

Verification has two parts: database measurement and application behavior.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeat the measurements

  1. Run wp option list --autoload=on --format=total_bytes again.
  2. Run wp option list --autoload=on --fields=option_name,size_bytes --format=csv again and compare the largest entries with your baseline.
  3. Check the changed option with wp option get-autoload OPTION_NAME.

A lower total is useful only if the intended option changed and the value remains available when its owner needs it. If the total did not change, confirm the option name, the reported flag, and whether another process rewrote the row.

Exercise representative requests

  • Load the home page and several content pages that use the affected feature.
  • Open the relevant plugin or theme administration screen.
  • Run a scheduled task, import, REST request, or background job associated with the option.
  • Check PHP, web-server, and application logs for notices, fatal errors, database errors, or failed requests.
  • Confirm that the owning software still saves and reads its settings.

Refresh caches before comparing performance

Object caches, page caches, and persistent application caches can retain the old option set. Refresh the relevant caches after a change, then repeat measurements under comparable conditions. Do not attribute a cache-warming difference to autoload cleanup without controlling for the cache state.

Troubleshoot common failure modes

A plugin reports that a setting is missing

First reverse the autoload-only change, not the value itself. If restoring autoload fixes the feature, the component may be reading the setting during an early bootstrap phase. Leave the value intact while contacting the component’s documentation or maintainer, and look for an official migration or compatibility update.

The site shows an error immediately after deletion

Restore the database backup or recreate the setting through the owning software’s supported setup process. Do not keep deleting related rows to make the error disappear; that can turn one missing value into a larger configuration loss.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reported total is still high

Recheck the largest-options CSV rather than deleting the next unfamiliar name. Several moderate values can outweigh one removed row, and an active component may legitimately own the remaining payload. Continue with the ownership-and-usage classification, not a numeric target.

The flag changes back

A plugin, theme, deployment script, or update may be rewriting the option. Compare timestamps and deployment activity, search code for the option name, and apply the supported configuration change at the owner rather than fighting an automated write.

WP-CLI reports an unsupported argument

Check the installed WP-CLI and WordPress versions and the command’s current help output. Boolean autoload handling has evolved, and older combinations may not accept the same syntax. Do not substitute direct SQL until you understand the version-specific behavior and have a tested rollback.

Examples of sound decisions

A large dashboard-only setting

An analytics component stores a substantial serialized configuration but reads it only on its administration report page. The component is active and the setting is valid. Keep the value, set autoload off through the supported command or API, then test the report page and a normal front-end request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A cache left by removed software

A former plugin is no longer installed, code searches find no reference to its option, and the option is a large cache that has no replacement owner. After a verified backup, delete that specific option. Re-run the reports and confirm that no deployment or scheduled task recreates it.

A core identity option

An option contains a fundamental site URL or identity setting. Even if it appears in the largest list, it is not a cleanup target. Leave it unchanged unless the official configuration procedure explicitly requires an edit.

Build a repeatable maintenance routine

Autoload cleanup is safer as a documented process than as a one-time purge.

  • Keep dated baseline exports of total bytes and the largest option names.
  • Record each changed option, its owner, reason, old flag, new flag, and test result.
  • Review the list after plugin, theme, and WordPress updates, because update routines can add or rewrite options.
  • Include restoration instructions with the backup record.
  • Set an alert or review trigger for unusual growth rather than adopting an arbitrary universal byte limit.

Sites without database administration capacity can use managed WordPress hosting, an established backup service, or performance monitoring support, but the provider should still supply a restorable backup and a clear change record. Outsourcing the operation does not remove the need to identify ownership and test the application.

Final cleanup checklist

  1. Back up the current database and verify restoration is possible.
  2. Measure the baseline with wp option list --autoload=on --format=total_bytes.
  3. Export names and sizes with wp option list --autoload=on --fields=option_name,size_bytes --format=csv.
  4. Confirm each candidate’s current flag with wp option get-autoload OPTION_NAME.
  5. Identify the active or former owner in code and documentation.
  6. Leave frequently used, core, and identity settings alone.
  7. For limited-use settings, run wp option update OPTION_NAME --autoload=off and retain the value.
  8. Delete only narrowly identified, confirmed orphaned options.
  9. Re-run both reports, refresh relevant caches, and test public, administrative, and background requests.
  10. Restore the backup or reverse the flag immediately if a feature or setting fails.
