Turn the iPhone off, unplug it, and remove the case. Lift as much adhesive as possible with a clean finger or plastic tool, then wipe the remaining film with a small amount of 70% isopropyl alcohol on a lint-free microfiber cloth or an alcohol wipe. Keep liquid out of ports, speakers, seams, buttons and other openings, and let every surface dry completely before reconnecting or reassembling anything.
The phone and its case should be cleaned separately. A concentration above 90% isopropyl alcohol belongs to controlled repair work on removed parts such as a detached frame, display perimeter or reused back cover—not to soaking an assembled iPhone.
What you need before cleaning
Gather the materials first so you do not have to leave a powered phone open while looking for supplies.

- 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes for the exterior of an assembled iPhone.
- A lint-free microfiber or lens cloth.
- Blunt tweezers for loose pieces of adhesive.
- A plastic spudger or other plastic pry tool for stubborn residue on a detached repair part or case.
Use a clean, dry work surface with enough light to see a thin adhesive film. Do not substitute a metal blade or knife for the plastic tool. Metal can scratch the display or the finished surface of a case.

Safety boundaries that apply to every iPhone
- Power down first. Turn the iPhone off and disconnect every cable. If the adhesive is part of a display or battery repair and the phone must be opened, use a model-specific repair guide and never pry into a powered or connected device.
- Separate the case. Cleaning the case while it is still fitted can push solvent or loosened glue toward the phone’s seams and openings.
- Use a cloth, not a pour. Apple permits a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe on exterior iPhone surfaces. If you use liquid alcohol, put a small amount on the cloth or cotton swab; never pour it onto the phone.
- Keep openings dry. Keep solvent away from ports, speakers, seams, buttons and exposed electronics.
- Protect vulnerable materials. iFixit’s repair procedures warn that display coatings and plastic parts can be damaged by drips or solvent. Cover or remove components that could be affected before cleaning a detached repair surface.
- Let alcohol evaporate fully. Do not reconnect a cable, reinstall the case or continue a repair while any surface is damp.
How to remove adhesive from the outside of an iPhone
1. Shut down and disconnect the phone
Turn the iPhone off using its normal shutdown control. Unplug charging, data and accessory cables. Remove the case and set it aside for its own cleaning. Work only on the exterior unless you are following a model-specific opening procedure.
2. Lift the bulk adhesive without metal
Start dry. Roll a loose edge of glue with a clean fingertip, or lift it with blunt tweezers. If the residue is stubborn and you are working on a surface that is safe to access, use a plastic spudger or plastic pry tool. Apply light pressure and keep the tool as flat as practical; the goal is to gather the adhesive, not scrape aggressively.
Removing the thick layer first matters because it limits the amount of solvent needed. Continue until only a thin, tacky film remains. Do not drag a metal scraper across the display or finished housing.
3. Dampen the cloth, not the phone
Use a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe, or place a small amount of 70% isopropyl alcohol on a lint-free microfiber cloth. The cloth should be lightly damp rather than wet enough to drip. Apple Support states that a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe may be used to gently wipe exterior iPhone surfaces.

4. Wipe in one direction
Place the dampened portion of the cloth over the remaining film and make controlled passes in one direction. iFixit recommends swiping the cleaning cloth in one direction rather than back and forth. Rotate to a clean section of cloth as adhesive transfers to it, and refresh the wipe or cloth when it becomes dirty.
Keep each pass on the exterior surface. Do not push the cloth into a port, speaker grille, seam, button gap or other opening. If residue sits directly at an opening, use the edge of a nearly dry cloth rather than adding more liquid.
5. Check the surface without adding unnecessary solvent
Pause and inspect under good light. If the surface still feels tacky, repeat a light mechanical lift followed by a small, controlled wipe. Avoid repeatedly wetting the same area. The objective is a clean, dry surface, not a prolonged solvent soak.

6. Allow complete drying
Leave the iPhone disconnected while the alcohol evaporates. When no dampness or tacky film remains, inspect the perimeter and the areas around buttons and openings. Only then reconnect a cable or put the case back on.

How to clean adhesive from an iPhone case
1. Keep the case off the phone
Set the detached case on a clean surface. Cleaning it separately prevents loosened glue or alcohol from reaching the iPhone while you work.
2. Remove loose glue mechanically
Roll or peel away accessible adhesive with a clean finger. Use blunt tweezers for a loose strip and a plastic tool for residue that needs gentle lifting. Do not use a metal blade on the case’s finished surface.
3. Wipe the inside and outside with a lightly damp cloth
Lightly dampen a microfiber cloth or cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol. Wipe the case’s interior and exterior, including corners where adhesive often remains. Use small amounts so liquid does not pool in seams, cutouts or decorative features.

- TOPICAL ANTISEPTIC: 40 pre-moistened wipes with 70% Isopropyl Alcohol solution. Topical first-aid antiseptic to help prevent the risk of infection in minor cuts, scrapes, and burn
- LOW LINT SHEETS: Wipes are made from strong, low lint sheets that resist leaving behind particles unlike using liquid on a cotton ball
- MOISTURE LOCK LID: Easy dispensing lid with safety seal maintains the moisture of wipes with isopropyl alcohol solution and prevents wipes from drying out
- CONVENIENT: Alcohol wipes are 5.6 in. x 7 and are convenient for home and on the go use
4. Dry before refitting
Let the case dry completely. Inspect the inside, outside and corners by touch and sight. Do not reinstall it while alcohol or a tacky film remains; trapped residue can transfer back to the phone.
When over-90% isopropyl alcohol is appropriate
iFixit’s display and rear-glass procedures use highly concentrated, over-90% isopropyl alcohol on a microfiber or lint-free cloth for adhesive residue on a removed frame, a display perimeter or a reused back cover. That is a controlled repair instruction for exposed parts.
It is not a general instruction to flood an assembled iPhone. A removed part can be positioned, protected and inspected in a way an intact phone cannot. If you are cleaning a repair surface, cover or remove components that could be damaged by drips, keep the cloth controlled, and follow the guide for the exact iPhone model. If you have not opened the phone and are only removing a sticker or tape mark from the exterior, stay with Apple’s 70% wipe guidance.
Choosing the method by situation
| Situation | First action | Alcohol guidance | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sticker or tape residue on an assembled iPhone exterior | Power off, remove the case, then lift bulk glue with a finger or plastic tool | 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe or a small amount on a lint-free microfiber cloth | Do not pour liquid onto the phone or let it enter openings |
| Residue on a detached iPhone case | Lift loose adhesive, then wipe inside, outside and corners | Lightly dampened microfiber cloth or cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol | Keep the case off the phone until fully dry |
| Adhesive on a removed frame, display perimeter or reused back cover during repair | Use a plastic tool to remove bulk residue and protect vulnerable components | iFixit repair procedures call for over-90% isopropyl alcohol on a microfiber or lint-free cloth | This controlled concentration is for removed repair parts, not for soaking an assembled phone |
What not to do
- Do not scrape with metal. A blade can scratch the display or case finish.
- Do not spray or pour alcohol directly onto the iPhone. Put a small amount on a wipe or cloth instead.
- Do not scrub back and forth. Use one-direction passes, as recommended by iFixit.
- Do not clean with the phone powered or connected. Shut it down and unplug every cable first.
- Do not leave the case installed. Remove it so the two surfaces can be treated independently.
- Do not treat a repair concentration as an exterior-cleaning shortcut. Over-90% alcohol is specified by iFixit for controlled work on removed parts.
- Do not rush reassembly. Alcohol must evaporate completely before a cable is reconnected, a repair continues or the case is refitted.
Troubleshooting common residue problems
The glue is thick, stringy or still movable
Stop adding alcohol and return to mechanical removal. Roll the adhesive with a clean finger or lift it with blunt tweezers. For a detached case or repair part, use a plastic tool. Once the bulk is gone, use a lightly dampened cloth for the remaining film.

A hazy or tacky film remains after wiping
Inspect the cloth first. If it is carrying adhesive, move to a clean section or a fresh wipe. Make another controlled, one-direction pass with a small amount of alcohol, then allow the surface to dry before judging the result. Repeatedly saturating the area is not a substitute for removing the bulk mechanically.
Residue is close to a port, speaker or seam
Use the least amount of liquid possible. Keep the damp section of the cloth at the edge of the affected area and do not press solvent into the opening. If you cannot keep the opening dry, stop rather than increasing the amount of alcohol.
The case still feels sticky after cleaning
Keep it detached and repeat the sequence: lift loose material, wipe the interior, exterior and corners with a lightly dampened cloth or cotton swab, and let it dry fully. Do not put it back on the iPhone to test it while the case is damp or tacky.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe adhesive is part of a display or battery repair
Do not treat this as ordinary exterior cleaning. Turn the phone off and disconnected, use a model-specific repair guide, and work only on the removed component or exposed repair surface specified by that guide. Never pry into a powered or connected device.
