The safest way to clean JBL Live Beam 4 earbuds is to separate the removable silicone tips from the electronics, wash the tips in lukewarm water with a little dishwashing liquid, wipe the earbud exterior with a lightly damp cloth, and clean charging contacts with JBL’s limited cotton-swab method. Keep liquid out of the sound opening and never rinse or immerse the earbuds. Let every part dry completely before reassembly or charging.

Cleaning can restore volume or channel balance when wax, dust, sweat, or skin oil is blocking a grille or preventing reliable charging. It cannot repair a damaged driver, battery, seal, or software fault, so use the troubleshooting checks below if the sound remains uneven.

What you can safely clean on the Live Beam 4

Live Beam 4 maintenance involves three different surfaces, and each needs a different approach:

Part What JBL’s guidance supports What to avoid
Removable silicone eartips Remove them and wash separately in lukewarm water with a little dishwashing liquid. Rinse and dry fully. Putting the tips back while wet, or washing them while they are still attached to an earbud.
Earbud body and sound opening Wipe the exterior with a damp cloth carrying a mild dishwashing-liquid solution. Clean visible debris around the sound opening carefully. JBL also describes a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab for dust and wax on true-wireless earbuds. Rinsing, soaking, spraying, flooding the opening, or pushing debris into the mesh with a sharp tool.
Earbud charging terminals and case pins Lightly rotate a cotton swab with some rubbing alcohol on the earbud terminals. Use a clean, possibly slightly moistened swab on the case pins, then dry the case interior completely. Leaving alcohol or water pooled inside the case, scraping contacts aggressively, or closing the case while damp.

JBL’s direct warning is clear: “Do not put the headphones into water.” The Live Beam 4’s IP55 rating describes resistance to dust and water exposure under the product’s test conditions; it is not permission to wash, hose, or immerse the earbuds. Water still must not enter the headphone through the sound opening or other openings.

Gather supplies and prepare a dry workspace

You do not need a branded cleaning kit. Use ordinary household items, with the liquids kept tightly controlled.

  • Clean cotton cloth, preferably lint-free.
  • Cotton swabs.
  • Lukewarm water.
  • A small amount of mild dishwashing liquid.
  • Rubbing alcohol for the limited charging-contact and visible-debris swab technique.
  • A dry towel or clean surface where parts can air-dry.

Unplug the charging case, remove both earbuds, and work away from a sink or any container where an earbud could fall into water. Wash your hands first so you do not transfer more oil to the mesh. If the earbuds were recently used, allow sweat to evaporate before cleaning. Keep the case open while it dries; do not use a hair dryer, heater, or compressed air, which can drive moisture and debris farther inside.

Step-by-step: clean the JBL Live Beam 4

1. Remove and inspect the silicone tips

  1. Hold one earbud by its solid housing, not by the sound opening.
  2. Gently pull the silicone tip straight off. Do not twist forcefully or use a tool to pry it loose.
  3. Inspect the tip and the earbud nozzle for wax, lint, tears, or deformation.
  4. Repeat for the other earbud and keep left and right parts together so you can reinstall them correctly.

The Live Beam 4 product listing includes four eartip sizes. Clean whichever size you use; the number of sizes does not change the cleaning method. Removing the tips is important because it lets you wash the silicone without exposing the earbud to running water.

2. Wash the removable silicone tips

  1. Put the detached tips in lukewarm water with a little dishwashing liquid.
  2. Rub each tip gently between clean fingers to loosen wax and skin oil. Pay attention to the inner channel, where buildup can reduce the opening.
  3. Rinse away all soap with clean lukewarm water.
  4. Shake off excess water and place the tips on a clean, dry towel until no moisture remains inside or outside.

Do not refit a tip merely because its outer surface feels dry. Water can remain in the narrow inner channel and transfer to the earbud nozzle. Complete drying before reassembly is a simple way to honor JBL’s instruction to keep water out of the headphone.

3. Wipe the earbud exterior

  1. Prepare a cloth that is damp, not dripping, with a mild dishwashing-liquid solution.
  2. Wipe the outer housing, seams, and touch-control areas gently.
  3. Use a dry section of the cloth to remove residue and leave the surface only slightly moist.
  4. Keep the cloth away from the sound opening, microphones, vents, and charging terminals unless you are only brushing across the surrounding surface with almost no moisture.

Never pour a solution onto the earbud and never spray it directly. A damp cloth controls the amount of liquid; it does not make the earbud washable.

4. Clear wax and dust around the sound opening

Look at the mesh under bright light. If debris is sitting on the surface, use a dry cotton swab or a cotton swab carrying only a very small amount of rubbing alcohol, as JBL describes for true-wireless earbuds. Roll the swab lightly over visible material and lift it away rather than pressing downward.

  • Use several light passes instead of one forceful pass.
  • Change to a clean swab when it becomes dirty.
  • Do not saturate the mesh or allow liquid to run toward the opening.
  • Do not use needles, pins, blades, toothpicks, or stiff brushes.
  • Do not push wax through the mesh. If it will not lift easily, stop and seek JBL support rather than adding more liquid or force.

JBL’s general guidance specifically says to clean the sound opening carefully and ensure that water does not get into the headphone. The alcohol-swab suggestion is a restrained technique for visible contamination, not an instruction to flood or soak the grille. JBL does not specify an alcohol concentration on the cited guidance, so do not assume that stronger is safer.

5. Clean the earbud charging terminals

Dirt on the metal terminals is a common reason an earbud charges intermittently or appears not to charge. JBL’s charging-contact article explicitly applies to the Live Beam 4 and notes that sweat, skin grease, and earwax can contaminate these contacts.

  1. Use a cotton swab with some rubbing alcohol. It should be lightly moistened, never dripping.
  2. Rotate the swab gently over each metal terminal on the earbud.
  3. Use a clean cotton cloth to remove loosened dust or stray cotton fibers.
  4. Inspect the terminals under good light. Repeat lightly until they look visibly clean.

A pencil tip and eraser are mentioned by JBL as possible further aids for charging contacts. Treat that as a troubleshooting option only: use it gently on the metal contact area, never on the sound mesh, microphones, or plastic shell. Do not scrape hard enough to scratch plating or bend a spring contact.

6. Clean the charging-case pins and wells

  1. With the case disconnected from power, open the lid and remove both earbuds.
  2. Use a clean cotton swab on each case pin. If needed, the swab may be slightly moistened, but it must not leave liquid pooled in the charging well.
  3. Wipe around the wells to remove lint, wax, and dust.
  4. Check that each spring pin moves freely without being forced sideways.
  5. Leave the case open until its interior is completely dry before putting the earbuds back or closing the lid.

Do not put the case under a tap, and do not pour alcohol into a charging well. If a pin is stuck, bent, or pushed below the others, stop cleaning and arrange service rather than trying to lever it back with metal.

7. Dry, reassemble, and test

  1. Allow the earbuds, tips, and case to air-dry fully on a clean towel.
  2. Check the tip channels and the earbud nozzle one more time for trapped moisture.
  3. Press each dry tip back onto its nozzle until it sits evenly and securely.
  4. Place the earbuds in the case and confirm that the charging indicators respond normally.
  5. Play a familiar recording at a moderate volume, testing left and right channels separately if your device permits.

If either earbud is still damp, leave it out of the case longer. Charging a wet contact can spread contamination and create unreliable contact.

Why cleaning may improve low or uneven sound

JBL says true-wireless earbuds collect dust and earwax and that this buildup can lead to low volume in one or both earbuds or to channel-balance problems. Periodic cleaning reduces the likelihood of those problems. The practical implication is limited: removing visible buildup may restore sound when buildup is the cause, but cleaning is not a guarantee.

A quiet channel can also result from a poor ear seal, a damaged driver, an audio-balance setting, a Bluetooth or firmware issue, moisture inside the earbud, or a failing battery. Do not keep scraping the mesh once it looks clear. More force can damage the grille while leaving the real cause untouched.

Troubleshoot a quiet or unbalanced earbud after cleaning

Check the physical fit first

Swap the clean tips between ears or try another of the four supplied sizes. A loose seal can make bass and overall loudness seem reduced even when the earbud is working normally. A tip that is torn, stretched, or not fully seated should be replaced with an intact size.

Test each channel without adding more liquid

Play a track with centered vocals, then test the left and right channels individually through your phone or computer’s accessibility audio-balance control. Confirm that the balance slider is centered and that mono audio or a hearing-assistance setting is not changing the result. Test a second recording or device to rule out a source-specific problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm charging and connection

Return each earbud to the dry case and verify that both indicate charging. If one repeatedly fails to charge, inspect the terminals and pins again for lint, then clean them with the light swab method. A clean contact should meet squarely; do not force an earbud into the well.

Stop when the mesh is clean but the fault remains

If volume remains low or uneven after careful cleaning, fit checks, and a second audio source, stop before using sharp tools or additional liquid. Consult JBL support or the Live Beam 4 troubleshooting documentation. Persistent imbalance is not proof that more aggressive cleaning is needed.

How often should you clean the earbuds?

JBL recommends periodic cleaning but does not set a universal interval for every listener. Your schedule should reflect use:

  • Wipe sweat and skin oil from the exterior after workouts or unusually hot days.
  • Inspect the sound openings and tips whenever volume changes, one side sounds muffled, or wax is visible.
  • Check charging contacts when charging becomes intermittent or an earbud is not recognized in the case.
  • Wash the tips whenever they show visible buildup, and let them dry completely before the next use.

Frequent inspection is safer than waiting for a severe blockage. It also lets you identify a torn tip, damaged mesh, or bent contact before attempting a deeper clean.

IP55: what the rating does and does not mean for cleaning

The official UK Live Beam 4 product page lists an IP55 water- and dust-resistance rating. That specification is useful context for ordinary exposure, but it does not replace JBL’s cleaning warning. IP ratings are test classifications, not a blanket promise that soap, running water, alcohol, or immersion is safe. The sound opening still needs to be protected from water, and the earbuds should never be rinsed as part of routine maintenance.

Use the rating as a reason to remain calm about incidental exposure, not as a reason to deliberately wet the product. If an earbud gets wetter than intended, wipe the exterior, keep it out of the case and away from charging, and let it dry thoroughly before testing.

Common cleaning mistakes and the safer alternative

Mistake Why it is risky Safer alternative
Rinsing an earbud under a tap Water can enter the sound opening, microphones, vents, or seams. Use a barely damp cloth on the exterior only.
Soaking the silicone tip while it is attached Water can run directly into the nozzle and housing. Remove the tip first and wash it separately.
Pouring or spraying alcohol Excess liquid can pool in openings and damage finishes or adhesives. Use a lightly moistened cotton swab for limited visible debris or contacts.
Scraping the mesh with a pin The mesh can tear, deform, or be pushed into the driver. Lift surface debris gently with a cotton swab; stop if it does not release.
Closing a damp case Trapped moisture can contaminate contacts and transfer to the earbuds. Leave the case open until its interior is completely dry.
Charging immediately after cleaning Moisture on terminals can cause unreliable charging. Dry every part fully before reassembly and charging.

A compact maintenance checklist

  • Remove both silicone tips before washing anything.
  • Wash tips separately in lukewarm water with a little dishwashing liquid.
  • Wipe the earbud shell with a damp cloth, never a wet or dripping one.
  • Keep water out of the sound opening.
  • Use only a light cotton-swab technique for visible debris and charging contacts.
  • Clean case pins with a clean swab and inspect for lint or bent pins.
  • Dry tips, earbuds, and the case interior completely.
  • Test charging and left/right audio before returning to normal use.
  • Escalate persistent imbalance or damaged parts instead of cleaning more aggressively.
