The safe method depends on what you are cleaning. Wipe the iPhone’s exterior, case, cable and MagSafe charging surface only after disconnecting them from power. Use a soft, lint-free cloth and keep liquid out of every opening. A charging connector is different: Apple’s published guidance does not authorize inserting a cotton swab, paper towel, pick, brush or other object into the Lightning or USB-C port. For debris that will not come away from the opening, repeated charging failures, liquid alerts or a connector that looks damaged, use Apple’s troubleshooting and service routes rather than probing inside.
This guide separates exterior cleaning from connector troubleshooting and gives material-specific steps for silicone, woven-fabric, leather and other cases, cables, MagSafe accessories and a wet charging port.
Before you clean: disconnect everything and identify the task
Remove the iPhone from power and unplug any cable at both ends. Turn the iPhone off before wiping its exterior. Disconnect MagSafe chargers and battery packs before cleaning their surfaces. Work on a clean, dry surface with good light so you can distinguish surface dirt from damage. Keep liquids away from openings, speakers, microphones, buttons, the SIM tray and the charging connector.
Recommended Free Tools
There are two separate jobs:
- Exterior cleaning: removing fingerprints, skin oils and surface dirt from the phone, case, cable jacket or MagSafe surface with an approved cloth or solution.
- Connector troubleshooting: dealing with debris, moisture, charging interruptions or accessory alerts at the Lightning or USB-C port. The exterior-wiping instructions do not give permission to put a tool or damp material inside that connector.
Use a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth as the basic supply. It is suitable for wiping surfaces, not for scraping or probing a port. Do not spray cleaner directly on the iPhone or accessories; apply any permitted liquid to the cloth instead. Use separate cloths when a case-cleaning procedure calls for a detergent cloth followed by a fresh-water cloth.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
| What you are cleaning | Power status | Permitted approach | Do not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone exterior | Disconnected and powered off | Soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth | Let moisture enter openings or use household sprays |
| Charging connector | Disconnected | Only very gentle wiping at the visible edge; follow troubleshooting guidance | Insert a swab, pick, brush, paper or compressed air |
| Case | Phone removed | Method matched to silicone, woven fabric or leather | Clean the case while it is still on the phone |
| Cable | Unplugged at both ends | Wipe the jacket; keep connectors dry | Reconnect before it is fully dry |
| MagSafe surface | Unplugged from power | Clear the ring and wipe the silicone middle as specified | Apply MagSafe alcohol guidance to the phone port or a case |
How to clean the iPhone exterior
- Disconnect all cables and accessories and turn off the iPhone.
- Lightly dampen a soft, lint-free cloth with water. The cloth should be slightly damp, never dripping.
- Wipe the display, back and sides gently. Use a clean section for areas with visible grime, and do not force liquid toward an opening.
- Use a dry portion of the cloth to remove remaining moisture, then let the phone air-dry before reconnecting anything.
Apple’s cleaning guidance says to keep moisture out of openings. It also lists window cleaners, household cleaners, compressed air, aerosol sprays, solvents, ammonia, abrasives and hydrogen-peroxide cleaners among products to avoid, except where Apple gives separate disinfection instructions. Those cautions apply even when a product is marketed for glass, electronics or general household use.
Visible dirt at the port opening
If dirt is sitting on the rim or immediately at the opening, wipe it away very gently with the corner of a dry, lint-free cloth while the phone is disconnected and powered off. Stop at the edge. Apple’s wording is about wiping dirt from the opening; it is not an instruction to insert the cloth, a swab or a tool into the connector.
Look at the opening without touching it. If you can see a smear on the outer rim, exterior wiping may remove it. If material appears deeper inside, disappears when you touch the cable or prevents a plug from seating, treat that as a connector problem rather than an invitation to dig. Repeated attempts with an improvised implement can push debris farther in or damage contacts.
What not to put in a Lightning or USB-C port
Do not insert cotton swabs, paper towels, pins, SIM tools, toothpicks, brushes, picks or any other foreign object. Fibers can break off, contacts can bend and debris can be pushed farther into the connector. Do not spray liquid into the port, and do not press a damp cloth against the opening.
Do not use compressed air. Do not use a hair dryer, heat gun, radiator or another external heat source to dry a wet phone. Apple states, “Don’t dry your iPhone using an external heat source or compressed air,” and separately warns against inserting a cotton bud or paper towel into the Lightning or USB-C connector in its water-resistance guidance. Rice is also not a drying method Apple recommends. A port-cleaning kit sold online does not override those warnings.
Cleaning iPhone cases by material
Always remove the iPhone before cleaning a case. Clean the inside as well as the outside, because grit trapped against the phone can cause abrasion. Pay attention to corners, button covers and the charging cutout, but do not push cloth fibers into the phone connector. Let the case dry completely before reinstalling it.

| FineWoven and TechWoven | Use the measured solution and two-cloth process below. | The cited quantities are from Apple’s UK instructions; check the current Apple directions for your country. |
| Leather | Use warm water and mild hand soap on a clean cloth, gently. | Cleaning can change the color. Leather cleaners and conditioners can change it too. |
Silicone, clear, polycarbonate, TPU and Beats cases
With the phone removed, wipe both sides using a soft cloth that is only slightly damp. Follow with a dry lint-free cloth. Work around, rather than into, cutouts for cameras, buttons and the charging connector. Keep the case away from strong household chemicals and never put it back on while moisture remains in seams or cutouts.

A product that is safe for one surface is not automatically safe for another, so do not transfer the MagSafe 70-percent-isopropyl instruction to a silicone phone case.
FineWoven and TechWoven cases
Apple’s UK instructions specify 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of washing liquid in 1 cup (250 ml) of water. Follow this sequence:
- Remove the iPhone.
- Mix 5 ml of washing liquid with 250 ml of water.
- Wring out a lint-free cloth so it is damp, not wet.
- Gently rub the case for one minute. Use light pressure rather than saturating the woven material.
- Wipe it with a second cloth slightly dampened with fresh water to remove detergent.
- Dry with a soft, lint-free cloth and leave it out until fully dry.
These measurements come from Apple’s UK page, How to clean your Apple products. Regional instructions can differ, so use the current Apple page for your location if it gives different quantities or precautions. Do not reinstall the phone simply because the outside feels dry; check seams, edges and the interior as well.
Leather cases
Remove the phone and gently wipe the leather with a clean cloth moistened with warm water and a small amount of mild hand soap. Test an inconspicuous area first if appearance matters. Expect possible color or finish changes; even products marketed as leather cleaners or conditioners can alter the case. Avoid treating leather like silicone or woven fabric, and allow it to dry before the phone goes back in.
How to clean iPhone charging cables
- Unplug the cable from the iPhone and from the charger, computer or other power source.
- Wipe the cable jacket with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth.
- If ordinary wiping is insufficient, use a soft cloth with soapy water on the cable exterior only.
- Keep both connectors dry while cleaning. Do not dip the cable or wipe liquid into a plug.
- After soapy-water cleaning, allow the cable to dry overnight before using it again.
Inspect both ends for bent contacts, cracked housing, fraying or corrosion. Check whether the plug fits normally without force. A damaged or unsupported cable can cause the same warning as a dirty connector, so cleaning cannot repair physical damage. If only one cable causes a warning, stop using that cable while you test a known-good replacement.

How to clean a MagSafe Charger or MagSafe Battery Pack
MagSafe accessories have a specific surface-cleaning method that should not be generalized to the iPhone’s port or to cases. The relevant surface is the silicone middle of the charging area, not the phone’s Lightning or USB-C connector.
- Brush loose debris from the magnetic ring. This is a surface step; do not use the brush to probe a phone port.
- Unplug the MagSafe accessory from power.
- Dampen a microfiber cloth with 70 percent isopropyl alcohol.
- Wipe the silicone middle of the charging area.
- Allow the surface to dry completely before reconnecting it or placing it against the phone.
Apple warns against common cleaners, solvents, abrasives, ammonia and hydrogen-peroxide cleaners for these accessories. The 70 percent isopropyl-alcohol instruction applies to the silicone middle of the MagSafe charging area, not as a general recommendation for the phone, a case or a Lightning/USB-C connector. If debris is on the magnetic ring, remove only what is loose and visible; do not force anything beneath the surface.
If you see a liquid-detection alert on your iPhone
When the iPhone detects liquid in the Lightning or USB-C connector, disconnect the cable at both ends immediately. Do not override the warning by forcing a connection unless you have no alternative and understand that charging while wet can cause damage. The alert can appear after a spill, splash or moisture on the cable plug, so inspect and dry both the phone and cable rather than assuming the port alone is dirty.
- Hold the iPhone with the connector facing down and tap it gently against your hand to help excess liquid leave.
- Place it in a dry area with airflow. Do not use heat, compressed air, a foreign object or rice.
- Wait at least 30 minutes before trying the cable again.
- If the alert returns, disconnect again and leave the phone to dry longer; Apple says drying can take up to 24 hours.
Apple’s full procedure is in If you see a liquid-detection alert on your iPhone. Its separate water-exposure guidance says to wait at least five hours before wired charging after liquid exposure, so a phone that has actually been wet may need substantially longer than the first 30-minute retry window. Do not interpret a temporarily clear alert as proof that a connector is safe if the phone was recently exposed to liquid.
When charging fails or an accessory alert appears
A dirty port is only one possible cause. A damaged, incompatible or unsupported cable or accessory can trigger the same behavior. Use this sequence without inserting anything into the connector.
- Disconnect the accessory and inspect the cable ends and the port opening under bright light. Look for visible debris, bent contacts or corrosion.
- Gently wipe only the exterior edge of the opening if dirt is reachable without entering the port.
- Reconnect directly to a wall charger or other known-good power source, avoiding hubs and adapters during the test.
- Restart the iPhone and install any available software update.
- Try a different cable and charger that are known to work with the iPhone.
- Test whether the problem follows one accessory or occurs with every cable.
Apple’s charging checklist is documented at If your iPhone or iPod touch won’t charge. For an “Accessory may not be supported” message, Apple also recommends checking the connector for damage or debris and trying another accessory; see If an ‘Accessory may not be supported’ alert appears on your Apple device.

Choose the next action from the symptom
| What you observe | Most useful next step | Stop and seek service when |
|---|---|---|
| Only one cable produces the warning | Replace or test that cable with a known-good one; inspect it for damage. | The replacement also shows damage or fails. |
| Every cable fails, with no liquid alert | Restart, check software, connect directly to power and inspect the opening for visible debris. | Charging remains unreliable after those checks. |
| Liquid alert returns after drying | Continue airflow drying; do not probe or heat the connector. | The alert persists with Apple cables or accessories after the drying period. |
| Port looks bent, loose, corroded or physically damaged | Stop connecting accessories. | Arrange Apple service rather than attempting an at-home repair. |
| Wireless charging works but wired charging does not | Use the wired troubleshooting sequence and compare multiple known-good cables. | The connector still fails or appears damaged. |
Repeated liquid alerts with Apple cables or accessories, persistent failure after testing different chargers, or any suspected connector damage are reasons to contact Apple Support or arrange service. A service appointment is safer than trying to extract compacted debris or straighten contacts yourself.
What to keep in a safe cleaning kit
- One or more soft, lint-free microfiber cloths for the phone exterior, cases and cable jackets.
- A separate clean cloth for detergent rinsing on FineWoven or TechWoven cases.
- 70 percent isopropyl alcohol only when following the specific MagSafe silicone-surface instruction.
- A well-ventilated, dry place for air-drying cables and devices.
A cleaning kit does not need a port pick, brush, swab, canned air or liquid applicator. Those items create a risk that Apple’s connector guidance is designed to avoid. The same microfiber cloth can serve several exterior jobs, but use it only slightly damp and keep it away from the inside of a connector.

- Disconnect the iPhone and accessories before cleaning; turn the iPhone off for exterior wiping.
- Use a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth on the phone and most cases.
- Use the measured detergent process for FineWoven and TechWoven cases, and expect leather color changes.
- Keep cable connectors dry and wait overnight after soapy-water cable cleaning.
- Use 70 percent isopropyl alcohol only on the specified silicone middle of an unplugged MagSafe charging surface.
- Never insert objects, use compressed air or apply external heat inside a Lightning or USB-C connector.
- For liquid alerts, face the connector downward, use airflow and wait at least 30 minutes before retrying; allow up to 24 hours if the alert returns.
- After actual liquid exposure, follow the separate guidance to wait at least five hours before wired charging.
- Escalate persistent alerts, charging failures or suspected connector damage to Apple Support or service.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a cotton swab to clean an iPhone charging port?
No. Apple warns against inserting cotton buds, paper towels and other foreign objects into the Lightning or USB-C connector. Wipe only dirt that is reachable on the outside edge, then use Apple’s troubleshooting or service options for debris deeper inside.
Can I spray cleaner or alcohol into the charging port?
No. Do not spray liquid into the connector or press a damp cloth into it. The 70 percent isopropyl-alcohol instruction applies specifically to the silicone middle of an unplugged MagSafe charging surface, not to the iPhone port.
How long should an iPhone dry after a liquid alert?
Wait at least 30 minutes before trying the cable again. If the alert returns, continue drying; Apple says it can take up to 24 hours. After actual liquid exposure, separate Apple guidance says to wait at least five hours before wired charging.

How do I clean a FineWoven or TechWoven iPhone case?
Apple’s UK instructions use 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of washing liquid in 1 cup (250 ml) of water. With the phone removed, rub gently with a wrung-out lint-free cloth for one minute, wipe with a second cloth slightly dampened with fresh water, then dry with a soft lint-free cloth. Check your local Apple instructions for regional differences.
Can I clean a leather case the same way as a silicone case?
No. Use warm water and a small amount of mild hand soap on a clean cloth, applied gently after removing the phone. Cleaning can change leather’s color or finish, and leather cleaners or conditioners can do so as well.
How should I clean an iPhone charging cable?
Unplug both ends, wipe the jacket with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth and keep the connectors dry. If you use soapy water on the exterior, let the cable dry overnight before reuse. Replace it if you find fraying, corrosion, cracked housing or bent contacts.
Why does my iPhone say an accessory may not be supported?
A dirty or damaged port is one possibility, but the cable or accessory may also be damaged, incompatible or unsupported. Inspect both connectors and the port opening, restart the iPhone, check software, connect directly to power and try a known-good cable and charger.
When should I stop cleaning and seek Apple service?
Stop if the port looks bent, loose, corroded or otherwise damaged; if liquid alerts persist after drying; or if charging remains unreliable with known-good Apple cables or accessories. Do not attempt to straighten contacts or extract compacted debris yourself.
Can I use the MagSafe cleaning instructions on my iPhone or case?
No. For a MagSafe Charger or MagSafe Battery Pack, Apple specifies brushing loose debris from the magnetic ring and wiping the silicone middle with a microfiber cloth dampened with 70 percent isopropyl alcohol while unplugged. That method is not a general instruction for cases, the phone exterior or a charging connector.
The Bottom Line
Clean surfaces with the material-specific cloth method, but treat the Lightning or USB-C connector as a troubleshooting area rather than a place to insert tools. Keep moisture, heat and compressed air away from the port; give a wet phone time to dry; and use Apple support or service when alerts, charging failures or visible damage persist.
