You cannot guarantee your NVIDIA settings will survive a true clean installation. NVIDIA’s documented clean-install behavior resets NVIDIA settings to defaults and removes profiles. If preserving your current configuration is the priority, install the newer driver over the existing one instead. NVIDIA calls that an overinstall and recommends it for retaining Control Panel settings or profiles.
If a clean reset is required, back up what NVIDIA lets you export before running the installer: save an available Control Panel profile as a .nvp file, export custom resolutions separately as XML, and record any settings those files do not cover. Restore the backups afterward, then re-enter the rest manually.
What “clean install without losing settings” really means
The two goals conflict in NVIDIA’s own installation guidance. A clean installation is designed to remove the existing configuration. An overinstall leaves the current driver in place while replacing it with the newer package, which is the documented method for retaining settings.

NVIDIA’s driver FAQ says, “Today the recommended method is to overinstall the newer driver on top of your older driver.” The same FAQ says you do not need to uninstall the old driver first and identifies overinstallation as the way to retain existing Control Panel settings or profiles. Read the current guidance at NVIDIA Driver Help.

The phrase “without losing your settings” therefore has two practical interpretations:
- Keep the configuration intact: overinstall the new driver and do not select the clean-install option.
- Reset the driver completely: perform a clean installation, knowing that NVIDIA settings and profiles must be rebuilt or restored from limited backups.
A saved profile is useful, but it is not proof that every setting will migrate. NVIDIA documents profile save/load support and a separate custom-resolution export; its documentation does not promise a complete, universal backup of every driver option.
Choose the installation method before you start
| Choice | What happens to settings | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Install the newer driver over the existing driver | NVIDIA says this retains current Control Panel settings or profiles. | Keeping your working configuration matters more than resetting the driver. |
| Select Perform a clean installation | NVIDIA’s installation guide documents a return to default settings and removal of created profiles. | You specifically need a clean reset and accept manual reconfiguration. |
The older guide that documents the clean-install result is a Windows 7-era NVIDIA installation document, so treat its wording as the documented behavior of that installer option rather than a guarantee that every modern installer screen looks identical. The guide is available in NVIDIA’s Installation PDF.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Prepare a settings backup before touching the driver
Do this while the current driver and its control panels still work. Store the exported files somewhere that will not be deleted during troubleshooting, such as a separate internal drive or a USB drive. The official tools cover only particular kinds of settings, so also make a human-readable record.
Record settings that matter to you
- Take screenshots of important global settings and each application-specific profile.
- Write down display mode, refresh rate, color format, dynamic range, scaling choice, multi-display arrangement and any synchronization or latency options you rely on.
- For game or application profiles, note which executable each profile targets. A profile can be present but ineffective if an application was reinstalled to a different path.
- Record settings in any NVIDIA utility you use in addition to Control Panel. There is no single official export that covers every NVIDIA interface and product.
This manual record is practical protection, not an NVIDIA guarantee of a full-settings backup. It gives you a reference for options that are not included in a profile or custom-resolution file.
Save an NVIDIA Control Panel profile
NVIDIA’s Control Panel Quick Start Guide documents saving and loading desktop profiles as .nvp files. In the Control Panel, open the Profiles menu and choose Save (the exact menu presentation can vary by driver and product). Give the file a recognizable name and save it outside any folders you plan to remove. The guide is hosted by NVIDIA as the NVIDIA Control Panel Quick Start Guide.

Do not treat the .nvp file as a complete image of the driver installation. NVIDIA documents that profiles can be saved and loaded; it does not state that every global option, per-application setting, display adjustment or third-party control is included. Keep the screenshots and notes even after creating the file.
Export custom resolutions separately
Custom resolutions use a different export path. In NVIDIA Control Panel:
- Open Display > Change resolution.
- Select the display that has the custom mode.
- Choose Customize.
- Use the file icon next to the custom resolution to export the settings as an XML file.
NVIDIA’s step-by-step instructions are in To export a custom resolution you created. Export each display’s custom modes that you need; do not assume a Control Panel profile contains them.
Method 1: overinstall the driver and keep your configuration
Use this route when avoiding reconfiguration is the main objective. It is an update over the existing installation, not a clean reset.
- Download the driver for your exact GPU and operating system. Use NVIDIA’s driver download service and verify the product family before launching the installer. Do not choose a package for a different GPU series or operating-system edition.
- Close games and GPU-intensive applications. Save work and exit software that may be using the graphics driver.
- Run the NVIDIA installer. Follow the normal installation path. If the installer presents an option named Perform a clean installation, leave it unselected.
- Allow the installation to finish. The display may blink or go black briefly while the driver switches; that is expected during a graphics-driver update. Do not interrupt the process while the installer is working.
- Restart if prompted. A reboot ensures Windows and applications load the newly installed driver components together.
- Check the settings that matter. Confirm display mode, refresh rate, color settings, application profiles and any synchronization or performance options you depend on.
NVIDIA’s FAQ specifically says that uninstalling the older driver first is unnecessary for the recommended overinstall method. If your configuration remains intact, no profile restoration is required; still keep your exported files for the next driver change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMethod 2: perform a clean installation when a reset is required
Choose this method only when you want to remove the existing NVIDIA configuration or when a normal overinstall has not solved the problem and you are prepared to rebuild settings. The clean option is the step that changes the outcome; selecting it means you should expect to reconfigure the driver.

- Choose Custom (Advanced) installation. The clean-install control is presented in this path rather than the basic express route.
- Select Perform a clean installation only after confirming your backups. NVIDIA’s installation documentation describes this option as restoring NVIDIA settings to defaults and removing profiles you created.
- Continue through the installer. Expect the display to reset during the process. Do not power off the computer while files are being installed.
- Restart Windows when requested. After the reboot, open the available NVIDIA control interface and verify that the new driver is loaded.
The clean option may also remove an existing NVIDIA Control Panel installation. That matters because you may need the current NVIDIA app or a newly installed Control Panel component to access the controls used for restoration.
Restore what can be restored, then rebuild the rest
Load the saved profile
After the reboot, open NVIDIA Control Panel if it is available and use the Profiles menu’s load command to select the backed-up .nvp file. If the Profiles menu is not present, do not force the file into another folder or assume the import succeeded; use your notes and screenshots until the appropriate NVIDIA interface is available.
Compare the loaded result with your pre-install record. A profile can restore supported profile data while leaving other settings at their defaults. Check each application profile rather than assuming that a single global change covered every program.

If the custom mode is not offered after the clean install, compare the display connection, monitor identification and timing values with your notes. A driver update can expose a different display name or capability list; do not select an unsupported mode simply because its label looks familiar.

- Any custom resolution or timing that was not accepted by the restored file.
Change one group at a time and test a representative application after each group. This makes it possible to identify a setting that causes instability instead of losing track of several simultaneous changes.

Where the controls are in the current NVIDIA app
NVIDIA’s recent GeForce communication says the NVIDIA app modernizes Control Panel features for GeForce RTX GPUs. In that environment, Graphics > Program Settings replaces the former Control Panel path 3D Settings > Manage 3D Settings. NVIDIA also says existing Control Panel installations remain unless users perform a clean installation. These statements are specific to supported GeForce RTX use and should not be generalized to every NVIDIA workstation, enterprise or older product.

The app’s driver and GPU-settings capabilities are described on NVIDIA’s Download NVIDIA App for Gamers and Creators page. Interface names and available options can vary by GPU, driver package and Windows configuration.

Verify the installation and settings
Do not rely only on a successful installer message. Verify both the driver version and the configuration you intended to keep or restore.
- Open NVIDIA Control Panel and choose Help > System Information to view the installed driver version, when that menu is available.
- If Control Panel is unavailable, open Windows Device Manager, expand the display-adapter entry, open the NVIDIA device’s properties and check the driver information.
- Confirm Windows reports the intended display resolution and refresh rate for every monitor.
- Open a representative game or application and verify its profile-specific behavior.
- Test custom resolutions cautiously, one display at a time, and return to a known-good mode if the screen becomes unreadable.
NVIDIA identifies the Control Panel System Information and Device Manager checks in its driver FAQ at NVIDIA Driver Help.
Troubleshooting common problems
The installer offers only a basic installation
Restart the installer and look for the Custom (Advanced) choice. The Perform a clean installation checkbox is associated with that path. If the option still does not appear, verify that you downloaded the correct package for the GPU and operating system. Do not uninstall a working driver merely to make the checkbox appear; NVIDIA’s recommended settings-retaining method does not require pre-uninstalling.

The Profiles menu is missing
Not every NVIDIA product or interface exposes the same profile controls. Use the manual record you made before installation and check the NVIDIA app’s Graphics > Program Settings area on supported GeForce RTX systems. A missing menu means you should not claim that the .nvp backup was restored; continue with documented controls and manual entries instead.
A profile loaded but a setting did not return
That is consistent with NVIDIA’s documentation: profile save/load is documented, but complete coverage of every driver setting is not. Compare the current interface with your screenshots, re-enter the missing value and test the affected application. Custom resolutions require their separate XML workflow.
The custom resolution is unavailable
Check that the intended display is selected under Change resolution, then open Customize. Confirm that the display connection and monitor identification match the pre-install record. If the mode is rejected, use a supported resolution rather than repeatedly applying an unstable timing.
Recommended Free Tools
The NVIDIA app or Control Panel looks different after the clean install
A clean installation can remove an existing Control Panel installation, and NVIDIA has moved modernized GeForce RTX controls into the NVIDIA app. Use the product-appropriate interface and expect labels to differ from older screenshots or guides. Workstation and enterprise drivers may not expose the same app features.
Which approach should you use?
- Choose overinstall when your current profiles and display setup work and your priority is continuity. It is NVIDIA’s recommended way to retain settings.
- Choose clean installation when you intentionally want defaults, need to remove old profiles or are troubleshooting a problem that warrants a reset. Complete the profile, custom-resolution and manual backups first.
- Do not describe a clean install as settings-preserving. The backup files can reduce the amount of re-entry, but they are limited restoration tools rather than a guaranteed full migration.
The safest way to “clean-install without losing settings” is therefore to avoid the clean-install option when retention is the goal. If a clean reset is non-negotiable, preserve the specific data NVIDIA lets you export and plan for the remaining settings to be recreated.
