Rinse your glasses under lukewarm running water before wiping them, then use a clean microfiber lens cloth to dry them gently. The rinse carries away dust and grit that could scratch a lens during dry wiping. For fingerprints or heavier grease, add a drop of pH-neutral dishwashing detergent, rinse thoroughly, and dry without hard rubbing.

The safest everyday method

Use this sequence for ordinary dust, fingerprints and oily marks:

  1. Hold the frame gently. Grip the bridge or the frame arms rather than pressing on the lens surfaces.
  2. Rinse both sides. Place the glasses under lukewarm running water. Let the water carry away dust and other rough particles before any cloth touches the lenses.
  3. Add mild detergent when needed. For fingerprints, skin oil or heavier soil, put one drop of pH-neutral dishwashing detergent between clean fingers, spread it lightly over the lenses and frame, and rinse again. Avoid oily soaps, which can leave a film.
  4. Dry with a clean microfiber lens cloth. Blot or make gentle passes with very light pressure. Do not scrub hard.

This process follows practical lens-care guidance from ZEISS. It is suitable for many everyday spectacle lenses, but your lens maker’s care instructions take priority if they differ, especially when a coating’s compatibility is uncertain.

Why rinsing before wiping prevents scratches

A lens can look merely dusty while carrying tiny hard particles. A dry cloth or sleeve can drag those particles across the surface, creating fine scratches or coating wear. Running water removes much of that loose material first, so the subsequent drying step is less abrasive.

  • MagicFiber: Magical results for the things you care about most

Do not dry-wipe a visibly gritty lens. If you are away from a sink, use a purpose-made lens spray or pre-moistened spectacle-lens wipe instead of rubbing a dry surface. These products are designed to suspend or lift residue, but you should still follow the product label and the lens maker’s instructions.

Detailed at-home procedure

1. Prepare a clean work area

Wash and dry your hands if they are visibly dirty or greasy. Set the glasses on a stable surface only when necessary; holding them by the frame reduces pressure on the lenses and hinges. Have a clean microfiber lens cloth ready. A cloth that has been carried loose in a pocket or placed on a dirty counter may contain grit even if it looks clean.

2. Rinse with lukewarm water

Run lukewarm water over the front and back of each lens. The water should be comfortable to the touch, not hot. Cover the entire lens area and allow the flow to remove dust and rough debris. Do not start with a dry tissue, paper towel or shirt sleeve.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Wash oily or sticky residue

If rinsing does not remove fingerprints or grease, use a single drop of pH-neutral dishwashing detergent. Rub the drop between clean fingers first, then spread it gently over both sides of the lenses and the frame. Rinse until no detergent remains. Oily soap can leave deposits and create more smearing, so it is not a substitute for a neutral detergent.

4. Dry without pressure

Use a clean microfiber lens cloth to remove water. Make light, controlled passes or gently blot; there is no benefit to forceful polishing. If the cloth becomes wet or picks up visible dirt, use a fresh clean section or wash the cloth before the next cleaning.

5. Inspect under good light

Check both lens surfaces and the frame edges. If a mark remains, repeat the rinse-and-clean process rather than increasing pressure. A persistent line that does not change after dirt is removed may be a scratch or coating damage, not residue.

What each step protects

The order matters because each action has a different job. Rinsing is the debris-removal stage; it prevents a cloth from becoming a tool that drags grit. Neutral detergent loosens skin oil and other films that water alone may leave behind. Rinsing after detergent removes the loosened material and any soap residue. The microfiber cloth is for controlled drying and finishing, not for grinding a dry lens clean.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use only enough water to wet both sides and enough detergent to cover the oily area lightly. More soap does not make the process safer or faster; it mainly creates more residue to rinse away. Likewise, repeated gentle passes are preferable to one forceful polish. If a lens is still dirty, go back to the rinse stage instead of increasing pressure.

Choosing a cleaning option

The best choice depends on whether you can rinse the glasses and how much contamination is present. The options below reflect the care guidance available for spectacle lenses; they are not a performance ranking of brands.

Option Best use Important technique Main caution
Lukewarm running water Removing dust and loose debris before wiping Rinse both sides first Use lukewarm, not hot, water
pH-neutral dishwashing detergent Fingerprints, grease and heavier soil at home Use one drop, spread gently, then rinse completely Avoid oily soap and detergent residue
Microfiber lens cloth Routine drying and gentle finishing Use a clean cloth with very light pressure A dirty cloth can transfer grit or residue
Purpose-made lens-cleaner spray Portable or sink-free cleaning Follow the cleaner and lens directions; spray onto the cloth when directed Keep liquid away from openings in rimless or screw-mounted frames
Pre-moistened lens wipes Convenient cleaning while traveling Use a wipe intended for spectacle lenses and follow its label Do not reuse a dirty or dried-out wipe

For the most thorough at-home clean, running water lets you remove loose grit before drying. Spray and wipes trade that rinse for portability, so they are useful in a bag, car or office when a sink is unavailable. In every case, the product must be intended for spectacle lenses and compatible with your lens maker’s instructions. There is no universal cleaner that should be assumed safe for every coating.

Using spray or wipes safely

Lens-cleaner spray

Use a cleaner made for spectacle lenses, not a household glass or surface cleaner. Read both the cleaner label and the lens maker’s instructions. ZEISS guidance recommends applying spray to the microfiber cloth rather than directly to the lens in situations where liquid could enter holes or gaps in rimless and screw-mounted frames. Wipe with light pressure, using a clean part of the cloth for the second lens.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Applying spray to the cloth also lets you control the amount of liquid. Avoid saturating the frame, nose pads, hinges and any exposed screws. If liquid does reach an opening, dry the frame promptly with a clean part of the cloth. Do not combine several cleaners in an attempt to remove a stubborn mark; rinse and restart with one compatible method instead.

Pre-moistened lens wipes

Pre-moistened wipes are useful when running water is unavailable. Choose a wipe specifically labeled for eyeglass or spectacle lenses. Open a fresh wipe, remove visible loose debris as gently as the product directions allow, and make light passes instead of vigorous rubbing. Dispose of the wipe after use; a used wipe can hold particles that scratch on the next pass.

A wipe that has dried out or picked up visible grit should not be re-wetted and reused. Use a new one, or wait until you can rinse the lenses properly. Keep individually wrapped wipes in a clean compartment so their packaging does not collect debris that can transfer around the lens edges.

Materials and habits that can damage lenses

Many scratches happen because an otherwise clean-looking material carries hard particles. Do not use the following as a routine lens cloth:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Shirt sleeves, T-shirts, jackets, scarves or other clothing
  • Tissues, paper towels or paper handkerchiefs
  • Reusable handkerchiefs that have not been washed and kept free of grit
  • Any cloth that has fallen on the floor, been stored loose with keys, or visibly collected dirt

ZEISS interviewee René Stanke gives the short version: “Do not clean your eyeglass lenses with clothing, tissues or similar items.” The problem is not only the fabric or paper itself; particles trapped in it can be dragged across the lens. Never compensate for a questionable cloth by pressing harder. Hard rubbing increases the chance of scratching and can stress the frame.

Do not use oily soap. Do not dry-wipe visible grit. Do not place spectacle lenses in a jewelry ultrasonic cleaner unless an eye-care professional is handling the cleaning; the equipment and process may not be appropriate for the frame, lenses or coatings.

Lens coatings: more resistant does not mean scratch-proof

Modern hard coatings can improve scratch resistance, but they do not make a lens scratch-proof. Improper cleaning can damage a coated lens even when it has an anti-scratch hard coating. Lukewarm running water and lens-care products intended for spectacles are the general recommendations in the ZEISS guidance.

Coatings and frame constructions vary. If you do not know whether a spray, wipe or detergent is compatible with your lenses, check the lens maker’s instructions or ask the optician who supplied the glasses. Do not assume that a product safe for one pair is safe for every pair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Be especially cautious with older glasses, lenses with visible coating changes, and rimless or screw-mounted designs. The safe sequence is still to remove loose debris first, but the product choice should come from the lens maker or an optician when the coating is unknown. Keep the care leaflet or product information that came with the glasses so you can check it later rather than guessing.

How to keep a microfiber cloth from causing scratches

A microfiber cloth is only gentle when it is clean. Wash it regularly so it does not redistribute oil, dried cleaner or abrasive particles. ZEISS advises washing the cloth at no more than 40°C and avoiding fabric softener, which can leave a residue that causes streaks.

  • Keep the cloth in a clean case or closed compartment rather than loose with coins, keys or makeup.
  • Use a different cloth if the current one has visible dirt or a gritty feel.
  • Wash the cloth separately or according to its care label, without fabric softener.
  • Let it dry fully before storing it with the glasses.

Do not place a damp, used cloth back against the lenses. A cloth that feels soft but contains dried cleaner or particles can still cause streaks and abrasion. Carrying two clean cloths is practical: one for use and one as a dry replacement when the first becomes wet or dirty.

Troubleshooting common cleaning problems

The lens still looks smeared

Rinse again and use one drop of pH-neutral detergent, then rinse until all soap is gone. Dry with a freshly washed microfiber cloth. Smearing often comes from oily soap, detergent residue or a cloth carrying old cleaner. Increasing pressure is less useful than removing the source of the film.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There are tiny specks after drying

Those may be water droplets or particles on the cloth. Re-rinse both sides under lukewarm water and use a clean section of microfiber. Do not pick at the specks with a fingernail or scrape them with a card.

A mark remains after careful cleaning

Once dirt and grease are gone, a line that remains may be a scratch or coating damage. Cleaning cannot reverse it. Do not try toothpaste, abrasive polish, scratch-removal paste or other home remedies; they can remove more coating and distort the optical surface.

The frame has openings near the lenses

Rimless and screw-mounted frames have holes or gaps where liquid can enter. When using a spray, apply it to the cloth if the product guidance permits, rather than flooding the lens and frame. With running water, keep the rinse controlled and dry the frame afterward.

The glasses are dirty while traveling

Use a purpose-made spray with a clean microfiber cloth or a fresh pre-moistened lens wipe. If the lenses visibly carry grit, avoid a dry cloth and wait for a rinse when possible. Keep cleaning products sealed and separate from keys, coins and cosmetics so the cloth and wipes remain clean.

  • Each cloth measures 6 x 7 inches (15cm by 18cm)

Preventing scratches between cleanings

  • Store glasses in a protective case when they are not being worn.
  • Place them with the lenses facing upward if a case is unavailable for a short period.
  • Handle the frame by its arms or bridge rather than pinching the lens surfaces.
  • Keep a clean microfiber lens cloth with the case for routine drying.
  • Use a lens spray or pre-moistened lens wipe when you cannot rinse, instead of dry-wiping grit.

These habits reduce the occasions on which particles are rubbed across the lenses. They do not make a lens immune to scratches, so continue to use the care instructions supplied with your particular pair.

When professional help is appropriate

Ask an optician or eye-care professional about a coating-compatible cleaner when the lens maker’s instructions are unavailable or unclear. Seek advice if a scratch affects vision, creates distracting glare or appears to be spreading through a coating. Scratches cannot be washed or polished away from plastic or glass lenses; a professional can determine whether adjustment, replacement lenses or a new pair is the appropriate remedy.

An optician can also identify whether a persistent mark is residue, a damaged coating or a true scratch. That distinction matters because more cleaning will not restore damaged optical material. Avoid products promising to fill, polish or erase scratches unless your eye-care professional specifically recommends them for your lenses.

A simple decision guide

  1. Can you see dust or grit? Rinse with lukewarm running water before touching the lenses.
  2. Is the remaining problem grease or fingerprints? Use one drop of pH-neutral dishwashing detergent, rinse thoroughly and dry with clean microfiber.
  3. No sink available? Use a purpose-made spectacle-lens spray or pre-moistened lens wipe according to its label.
  4. Unsure about coating compatibility? Follow the lens maker’s instructions or contact an optician.
  5. Does the mark remain after proper cleaning? Treat it as possible damage and seek professional advice rather than polishing it.

Bottom line

Rinse first, use only a small amount of neutral detergent when grease requires it, and dry with clean microfiber using minimal pressure. Keep clothing, tissues, oily soap and abrasive home remedies away from the lenses. Coatings improve resistance but are not scratch-proof, and existing scratches require professional evaluation rather than more cleaning.

Should I spray cleaner directly on the lenses?

Follow the spray and lens instructions. For rimless or screw-mounted frames, ZEISS advises applying spray to the microfiber cloth rather than directly to the lens so liquid does not enter holes or gaps.

Are lens wipes safe for coated lenses?

Use only wipes labeled for spectacle lenses and check the lens maker’s compatibility instructions. Coatings differ, and no product should be assumed safe for every pair.

Can an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner clean eyeglasses?

Do not use a jewelry ultrasonic cleaner unless an eye-care professional is handling the cleaning. The equipment and process may not suit the frame, lenses or coatings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can cleaning remove scratches?

No. Cleaning removes dirt and smears but cannot remove scratches from plastic or glass lenses. Ask an optician or lens maker about replacement or other appropriate options if a scratch affects vision.

Why do my glasses look streaky after cleaning?

Common causes include oily soap, detergent left on the lens, or a cloth carrying old cleaner or dirt. Rinse again, use only one drop of pH-neutral detergent if needed, rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean microfiber cloth.

What should I do if I have no sink?

Use a purpose-made eyeglass lens-cleaner spray with a clean microfiber cloth or a fresh pre-moistened spectacle-lens wipe. Avoid dry-wiping visible grit and follow both product and lens instructions.

When should I ask an optician for help?

Ask when coating compatibility is unclear, a mark remains after careful cleaning, or a scratch causes blurred vision or distracting glare. A professional can distinguish residue from coating damage and recommend replacement if necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Rinse away grit with lukewarm water, use a drop of pH-neutral detergent only for stubborn grease, and dry lightly with clean microfiber. Avoid clothing, tissues, oily soap, hard rubbing and abrasive home remedies. Lens coatings are not scratch-proof, and genuine scratches need an optician’s evaluation.
