The safest way to clean earphones or earbuds is to identify the exact model first and follow its manufacturer’s care instructions. Cleaning methods are not interchangeable: some products permit only dry brushing, while certain named models allow a carefully controlled micellar-water process. In every case, remove detachable ear tips before treating them, keep liquid away from electronics and charging contacts, never force debris into mesh or vents, and let every part dry completely before use or charging.

Why model-specific cleaning matters

Earbuds combine delicate speaker mesh, microphones, vents, proximity sensors, touch surfaces and charging contacts in a very small enclosure. Earwax, sweat and dust can obstruct sound openings or sensors, while moisture in a charging port can interfere with charging or cause corrosion. Apple notes that debris or earwax buildup can affect performance and features such as Active Noise Cancellation.

There is no universal wet-cleaning recipe. The manufacturer pages reviewed range from dry brush and dry cloth instructions to a tightly controlled micellar-water method for specified Apple and Samsung models. A method that is acceptable for one generation can damage another, so check the support page for your exact model and generation before applying any liquid.

  • A clean, soft-bristled brush or a soft-bristled earbud cleaning brush for specified openings.
  • A clean, lint-free, soft cloth.
  • Cotton swabs where the manufacturer specifically lists them.
  • Micellar cleansing water only when the instructions for your exact model call for it.
  • Distilled water for rinsing a brush when a model-specific procedure requires that step.

Do not assume that a commercial “earbud cleaning kit” is safe. Check what is in it and compare each tool and fluid with the maker’s instructions. No particular seller or kit is endorsed here.

Before touching the earbuds

  1. Disconnect the earbuds from your device, stop playback and remove them from your ears.
  2. Work over a clean, dry surface with good lighting so dropped tips or small parts are easy to find.
  3. Identify the exact model and generation, including whether you are cleaning the charging case, detachable tips or the electronic earbud body.
  4. Inspect for cracks, loose parts or liquid already inside an opening. If the housing is damaged, avoid adding moisture and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.

Universal safety rules

  • Use light pressure. Sharp tools, metal or wire brushes and forceful rubbing can damage mesh, vents and seals. Sony also warns against pushing dirt inward or rubbing mesh too hard.
  • Do not probe openings. Never use a pin, needle, paper clip or other sharp object to scrape a speaker grille, microphone hole or vent.
  • Keep liquid out of electronics. Do not pour, spray or drip cleaner directly onto an earbud, charging port, contact or case opening.
  • Do not charge damp equipment. Dry the earbuds, tips and case completely before reconnecting or placing the earbuds in the case.
  • Separate tips from the electronic body. Detachable silicone or foam tips can have different cleaning instructions from the earbud itself.
  • Stop when gentle cleaning stops helping. If sound remains muffled, do not increase pressure or add stronger chemicals; seek support or service.

Cleaning method by model family

Model or family Electronic body and mesh Removable ear tips Important limits
Apple AirPods (designated mesh procedures) Apple’s specified toothbrush, micellar-water, blotting and distilled-water sequence applies only to the meshes named on its support page. Follow the instructions for the particular model; do not assume every tip is washable. Avoid other areas, sharp objects, abrasives and running water. The cited procedure requires at least two hours of drying.
Apple AirPods Pro The UK support procedure uses micellar water and distilled-water rinsing for specified meshes only. Remove the tips, rinse with water without soap or household cleaner, and dry completely before reattaching. The optional immersion step is specifically for AirPods Pro 3 and must not be applied to other generations. The cited procedures require at least two hours of drying.
Samsung Galaxy Buds covered by Samsung’s US guide Use a cotton swab and dry brush as directed. Remove and reattach tips carefully according to the model instructions. Samsung’s guide warns against alcohol and soapy water and against metal or wire brushes.
Samsung Galaxy Buds4 series Use a soft brush with a small amount of micellar cleansing water, wipe carefully, rinse the brush with distilled water, and never apply liquid directly to the earbuds. Follow the Buds4 removal and reattachment instructions. The micellar-water method is explicitly limited to Buds4. Let the earbuds dry completely before use.
Sony WF/WI series For the relevant sound-output mesh, use a tightly wrung water-dampened cloth. A clean brush or dust-cleaning gel is permitted only for the specified lodged-vent-debris situation. Use the care instructions for your specific model and tip material. Do not push debris inward, rub mesh hard or use solvents such as alcohol. Wipe moisture around charging ports promptly and dry at room temperature.

Step-by-step cleaning procedure

1. Remove and inspect the tips

Hold the earbud by its housing and remove only a detachable tip that the manufacturer says can be removed. Do not twist or pull on a fixed nozzle, mesh or sensor. Examine the tip for wax, sweat and tears. A damaged tip should be replaced rather than aggressively scrubbed.

For AirPods Pro, Apple allows detached tips to be rinsed with water without soap or household cleaner. Rinse away residue, shake off excess water and leave the tips to dry completely. Do not reinstall a tip merely because its outside feels dry; water can remain inside the mounting channel.

2. Loosen surface debris without driving it inward

Use a soft brush with short, feather-light strokes directed away from the opening. Keep the earbud’s sound outlet facing downward where practical so loosened particles fall out instead of deeper into the housing. A cotton swab is appropriate only where the model’s guide names it, and it should not be twisted forcefully against mesh.

Do not use canned air, a household vacuum nozzle, a toothpick or a metal pick unless the manufacturer explicitly specifies that exact tool. Pressure can deform mesh or push wax behind it.

3. Treat the speaker mesh and vents according to the exact guide

Apple designated procedures: Apple’s AirPods instructions describe a toothbrush, micellar water, blotting, distilled-water rinsing and complete drying for specified meshes. Keep the fluid confined to the named area and avoid running water, abrasives and sharp objects. The process is not permission to wet the entire earbud.

Samsung Galaxy Buds in the US guide: Use the listed dry cotton swab and dry brush. Samsung warns against alcohol, soapy water, metal brushes and wire brushes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Samsung Buds4: The Canadian Buds4 instructions describe putting a small amount of micellar cleansing water on a soft brush, wiping carefully, rinsing the brush with distilled water and repeating as directed. Do not apply micellar water directly to the earbud. This exception is for Buds4 and should not be generalized to other Galaxy Buds.

Sony WF/WI: A tightly wrung water-dampened cloth may be used on the relevant sound-output mesh. Keep the cloth from dripping. Sony also describes a clean brush or dust-cleaning gel for a specified case in which debris is lodged in a vent. Do not use alcohol or other solvents and do not rub hard.

4. Clean the exterior and sensors

Wipe the outside with a clean, dry, soft cloth unless your model’s guide expressly allows a different method. Use light strokes around microphones, touch panels and sensor windows. Do not cover a sensor with liquid or push cloth fibers into a hole. If wax is stuck at an edge, loosen it with the permitted dry brush rather than scraping.

5. Clean the charging case separately

Remove the earbuds from the case before cleaning it. Turn the case upside down or hold it so loose debris can fall away. Apple recommends a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush to remove debris from a charging port, while warning not to insert anything into the port or get liquid in it. Follow the separate case instructions for Samsung and Sony models; their guidance emphasizes dry cleaning of contacts.

Use a dry cloth or the manufacturer-approved brush around charging contacts. Never flood the contact wells. If sweat or water reaches a charging port, wipe around it promptly and let the case dry at room temperature before inserting the earbuds or connecting a cable.

6. Dry every component completely

Place the earbuds, tips and case in a clean, ventilated area at room temperature. Do not use a hair dryer, heater, radiator or direct high heat, which can damage batteries, adhesives and plastics. Apple’s cited AirPods procedures specify at least two hours of drying; other models may use different wording, so follow the model page. Samsung’s Buds4 instruction is explicit: let the earbuds dry completely before use.

7. Reassemble and test

Reattach only fully dry tips and make sure each one is seated evenly. Check that no brush fiber or lint remains over a mesh or sensor. Play audio at a moderate level, test both channels and check microphones, touch controls, noise control and charging. If a function is still abnormal, stop cleaning rather than escalating to stronger chemicals or pressure.

Brand-specific details you should not combine

Apple AirPods and AirPods Pro

Apple’s Australian AirPods page and UK AirPods Pro page describe a controlled micellar-water and distilled-water process for designated meshes. Those pages also warn against running water on the electronic body, abrasives and sharp objects. AirPods Pro tips are a separate component: remove them, rinse with plain water only, use no soap or household cleaner, and dry thoroughly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An immersion instruction appears specifically for AirPods Pro 3. It is generation-specific; do not treat it as a general AirPods or AirPods Pro rule. For any Apple cleaning procedure that involves moisture, observe the stated minimum two-hour drying period before use.

Samsung Galaxy Buds

Samsung’s US instructions cover multiple Galaxy Buds models and emphasize dry tools, including a cotton swab and dry brush. They caution against alcohol, soapy water, metal brushes and wire brushes. Removable tips should be taken off and put back carefully so they do not tear or cover the sound outlet.

Samsung’s Canadian Buds4 page is different: it permits a small amount of micellar cleansing water on a soft brush, careful wiping, distilled-water rinsing of the brush and no direct liquid application. Because Samsung limits that method to Buds4, do not transfer it to another Galaxy Buds generation.

Sony WF and WI series

Sony’s care guidance permits a tightly wrung damp cloth for the relevant mesh and emphasizes keeping debris from being pushed into the earbud. Solvents such as alcohol are not appropriate. A brush or dust-cleaning gel is described only for a specified lodged-vent-debris situation, not as a blanket recommendation for every opening. Around charging ports, wipe moisture promptly and allow room-temperature drying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What not to do

  • Do not rinse an electronic earbud under a tap unless the exact manufacturer instructions explicitly allow that operation for that exact generation.
  • Do not use alcohol, household cleaner, soap, abrasive powder or solvent when the model guide prohibits it.
  • Do not insert pins, needles, toothpicks or metal tools into sound outlets, vents or charging ports.
  • Do not press a cotton swab into mesh or rotate it hard enough to deform the grille.
  • Do not put earbuds into the charging case while any part is damp.
  • Do not use heat to accelerate drying.
  • Do not assume water resistance makes the device safe to clean with running water; seals can age, and the care instructions still govern.

If the sound is still muffled

  1. Confirm that the tip is seated correctly and is not blocking the sound outlet.
  2. Inspect the mesh under bright light without poking it.
  3. Repeat only the permitted gentle method once the earbud is fully dry.
  4. Test the earbud on another device or with another audio track to rule out a source or software problem.
  5. If the channel, microphone, noise cancellation or charging behavior remains abnormal, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. Apple specifically directs users to seek service when cleaning does not resolve the issue.

Persistent muffling can indicate debris behind the mesh, a damaged driver, moisture ingress or a seal problem. More force is not a reliable diagnosis and can turn a cleanable obstruction into permanent damage.

After workouts and sweat exposure

Apple advises cleaning and drying AirPods after workouts or exposure to sweat and other substances that may cause irritation. Remove the earbuds, wipe and dry them using the model-approved method before returning them to the case. The manufacturer pages reviewed do not establish one universal calendar-based cleaning schedule, so clean when inspection shows buildup or after an exposure your model’s guide identifies rather than following an invented weekly rule.

Quick checklist

  • Exact model and generation identified.
  • Earbuds disconnected and removed from use.
  • Detachable tips removed only as directed.
  • Approved dry tool or model-specific fluid selected.
  • No sharp tools, force, alcohol or unapproved cleaner used.
  • Charging ports and contacts kept free of liquid.
  • Tips, earbuds and case completely dry.
  • Audio, microphones, controls and charging tested before normal use.
