Turn the PlayStation off normally, disconnect its AC power cord, and use a low-powered vacuum around the exterior vents. Do not force a nozzle, brush, cotton swab, or other object into an opening. Wipe the plastic with a soft, dry cloth, then restore clear airflow around the console.
On supported PS5 models, PlayStation’s safety guidance also allows the covers to be removed so a handheld vacuum can collect dust underneath. That is still a limited, model-specific cleaning step—not permission to dismantle the fan, power supply, or other internal parts.
What you need—and what you should not use
Routine vent cleaning requires only a few items:
- A low-powered vacuum cleaner, preferably with a small, soft attachment that can stay outside the openings.
- A soft, dry microfiber or other lint-free cloth for the plastic exterior.
- A clear, well-lit workspace where the console can remain unplugged while you work.
PlayStation’s published guidance does not name a particular vacuum model, define a suction rating, or approve a specialized “console vacuum.” The supported category is simply a low-powered vacuum used to remove dust accumulated in and around the vents. If your vacuum has adjustable suction, use the gentlest setting that lifts loose dust without pulling at anything inside the grille.

Do not spray cleaner onto the console, use solvents or volatile substances, or wipe it with a chemically treated cloth. Do not insert tools into the vents. Compressed air is not established as a manufacturer-approved procedure in the guidance cited here, so it should not be presented as the standard method.
Prepare the PlayStation safely
- Shut down through the normal menu. Wait until the console is completely off rather than in Rest Mode. On a PS4, wait for the power indicator to finish blinking; on a PS5, wait until the light is no longer active.
- Disconnect the AC power cord from the console. PlayStation specifically instructs owners to unplug the cable before cleaning. Remove other cables if they will obstruct access or cause the console to move.

Unplugging is not an optional precaution. The safety documents make disconnecting the AC cable part of the cleaning procedure, so do it before bringing a vacuum or cloth near the console.
External vent cleaning: the safe default for PS5 and PS4
Surface-only cleaning is the right first step for both console families. It removes loose dust without opening the enclosure and has the lowest chance of damaging clips, seals, cables, or fasteners.
- Inspect the vents before switching on the vacuum. Look for visible lint or dust around the grille and the surrounding case. This tells you where to work and helps you avoid dragging debris across the finish.
- Hold the vacuum just outside the vent. Move it slowly around the vent openings and over nearby dust. Keep the nozzle or brush attachment at the surface; never push it through a grille or use suction to pull on a component.
- Work around every accessible vent. Use short passes rather than pressing hard against one spot. Clean the intake and exhaust areas that you can reach from the exterior, along with dust on the case around them.
- Stop if anything catches. A brush, nozzle, or loose material should never be forced. If dust is packed behind an opening and does not lift with gentle external suction, leave it in place until you can follow a model-specific service procedure.
- Wipe the case after vacuuming. Use a soft, dry cloth on the plastic exterior. Do not use household spray, alcohol, solvent, abrasive pads, or a pre-treated cleaning wipe.
- Check the result before reconnecting power. Make sure no cloth fibers or loose debris remain on the vents and that the console is sitting with its openings unobstructed.
This process follows the PS5 support instruction to “Use a low-powered vacuum cleaner to remove any dust that has accumulated in and around the air vents.” The same basic approach is specified in the PS4 CUH-2116AB safety guide.
Keep the nozzle moving instead of sealing it tightly against one opening. The goal is to collect loose dust at the surface, not to create strong suction inside the chassis. If an attachment is too large to control, use the vacuum body at a distance or choose a smaller soft attachment that remains outside the grille.
PS5: removing covers to reach dust underneath
The CFI-71XX PS5 Safety Guide adds a limited option for dust trapped under the removable covers. It instructs owners to unplug the AC cord, remove the covers according to the model instructions, and use a handheld vacuum to remove dust buildup underneath. The guide says: “Use a cleaning tool such as a handheld vacuum cleaner to remove dust buildup.”
Use this option only when you are comfortable identifying your exact PS5 model and following its cover-removal sequence. A cover is not the same as the internal chassis: removing it does not authorize removal of the fan, shielding, power supply, heatsink, or other internal assemblies.

- Confirm the model family. The cited guide applies to the CFI-71XX family. Read the instructions for the exact model printed on your console before attempting to lift a cover.
- Power down and unplug. Disconnect the AC power cord from the rear and remove cables that could snag while the console is repositioned.
- Follow the model’s cover procedure exactly. Use the specified orientation and release points. Do not pry at a seam with a screwdriver or substitute a different disassembly sequence.
- Vacuum only the exposed dust. Keep a handheld vacuum near the surface beneath the cover. Do not probe the fan, circuit boards, connectors, or other components.

PS4 guidance and model limits
The PS4 CUH-2116AB Safety Guide says to disconnect the AC power cord before cleaning, use a low-powered vacuum when dust accumulates in the vents, and wipe the plastic exterior with a soft, dry cloth. It warns against solvents and chemically treated cloths.
That cited PS4 material does not provide the same cover-removal instruction found in the PS5 guide. Do not assume that a procedure for one PS4 revision applies to another revision, or that a PS5 cover technique applies to a PS4. If you only need to clear visible vent dust, use the external method. If dust is compacted deep inside, treat the job as model-specific repair rather than improvising through a grille.
The PS4 guidance applies specifically to the CUH-2116AB material cited here. Other PS4 revisions may have different fasteners, panels, or service instructions. Identify the full model before considering anything beyond wiping and external vacuuming.
Keep the airflow clear after cleaning
Dust returns quickly when the console is placed where it cannot breathe. PlayStation’s PS5 support guidance recommends at least 10 cm of free space around the console. Keep the vents unobstructed on every side that has an intake or exhaust opening.
- Leave at least 10 cm between the PS5 and nearby walls or furniture.

The 10 cm figure is a manufacturer instruction from PlayStation’s PS5 support guidance, not a laboratory measurement or a guarantee that a particular temperature or noise level will result. The same placement logic is sensible for a PS4: do not cover its openings or crowd it into an enclosure.

Compressed air can move dust deeper into a console, spin a fan rapidly, or spread debris across the work area. The official material cited for this procedure specifies a low-powered vacuum, not a compressed-air technique. Likewise, avoid inserting a screwdriver, pick, metal tweezers, cotton swab, stiff brush, or hose into a vent. These objects can snag a grille, contact an electrical part, or push lint beyond the reach of external suction. A plastic panel that does not lift easily should never be pried as a shortcut.
Do not substitute a high-powered shop vacuum simply because it removes dust faster. PlayStation’s instruction is for a low-powered vacuum; it does not provide a high-suction exception or a test showing that stronger suction is harmless.
When routine cleaning is not enough
