Let the pan cool completely, then wash it with warm water, mild dish soap and a soft, non-abrasive sponge or brush. Soak stuck-on food in warm soapy water rather than scraping it. Dishwasher rules differ by cookware line, so check the care instructions for your exact pan before loading it.
The safest general routine is deliberately simple: cool, wash gently, rinse, dry and store with protection between stacked pieces. A pan’s coating and its maker’s instructions matter more than a broad rule about all ceramic cookware.
What this cleaning guide covers
This routine is for cookware sold as ceramic nonstick or ceramic-coated nonstick. It is not a universal care guide for every item made of ceramic, such as bare ceramic bakeware. Ceramic-coated pans differ by maker and product line, so general advice should not override the instructions for your particular model.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That shared routine is useful when you need a starting point, but it does not make every detail interchangeable. Dishwasher ratings, soak directions and special residue treatments can be product-specific. The pan’s model number, packaging or care manual can help identify the exact instructions; if you are uncertain whether the pan is dishwasher-safe or a cleaner is permitted, do not assume that another brand’s directions apply.
How to clean a ceramic nonstick pan
- Let the pan cool fully. Set it aside after cooking and wait until it is no longer hot before washing. Calphalon and All-Clad caution against putting hot cookware into cold water because a sudden temperature change can warp the pan. Cooling first also gives you a chance to check whether ordinary washing will be enough or whether a brief soak is needed.
- Wash with mild soap and warm water. Use a soft, non-abrasive sponge, sponge cloth or soft-bristle brush. Work gently over the cooking surface and around the pan’s sides. The goal is to clean with the soft tool, not to scrub harder because the surface is nonstick.
- Soak stuck food instead of scraping. Fill the pan with warm water and mild dish soap and let residue loosen. Le Creuset specifies a 15-to-20-minute soak for its cookware; that timing is Le Creuset-specific, not a universal duration for every ceramic pan. ZWILLING and ILAG also advise soaking but do not set one general time. If the residue has not loosened, continue to rely on the care directions for your model rather than reaching for an abrasive pad.
- Wipe, rinse and dry. Once the residue has softened, wipe it away with the soft cleaning tool. Rinse thoroughly and dry the pan before storing it. Drying is part of the routine recommended in the manufacturer guidance, not a reason to use a rough towel or abrasive material.
- Protect the surface in storage. If you stack pans, place a cloth or cookware protector between them. Calphalon and ZWILLING include this precaution in their care guidance. If you do not stack them, the same basic goal applies: avoid letting another pan’s cooking surface rub directly against this one during storage.
A closer look at each step
Cooling before washing
Do not move a very hot pan straight from the stove into cold water. Calphalon says to allow cookware to cool fully before cleaning and warns that plunging a hot pan into cold water can cause it to warp. All-Clad’s care guidance also cautions against abrupt temperature change. A practical sequence is to set the pan aside, let it cool, and then begin washing with warm water.
This is especially worth remembering when you are in a hurry to clean up. A quick rinse may seem convenient, but the manufacturer guidance favors waiting rather than exposing hot cookware to cold water. The temperature warning is about the pan, not a requirement to let food residue harden: once the pan has cooled, use the soak step if residue is stuck.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoosing a gentle cleaning tool
A soft sponge, sponge cloth and soft-bristle brush are all supported options. You can choose whichever is comfortable to hold and easy to move around the pan’s corners. A brush may be easier for some people to maneuver around curved edges, while a sponge or cloth offers a broad contact surface; these are convenience considerations, not claims that one tool cleans better or preserves a coating longer.
Pay attention to the part of a tool that touches the pan. A dual-sided sponge should be used on its soft, non-abrasive side, not its rough scouring side. A tool’s label or appearance does not substitute for the maker’s instructions: if it is metal, scratchy or intended for scouring, do not use it on the ceramic cooking surface.
How to remove food that will not wipe away
When food is stuck, soaking is the supported first step. Avoid trying to speed up the job by scraping with a knife or other sharp implement, or by switching to a metal pad or the abrasive side of a sponge. Those tools can scour the surface, and manufacturers and ILAG warn against abrasive cleaning methods.

For a simple sequence, let the pan cool, add warm water and mild dish soap, and give the residue time to loosen. Then try wiping it with a soft sponge, cloth or brush. Le Creuset gives a 15-to-20-minute soak for its own cookware; ZWILLING and ILAG recommend soaking without specifying a universal time. Follow your own cookware maker’s instructions if they set a different procedure.

Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf a first gentle wipe does not remove everything, do not treat that as permission to apply more force. Revisit the model’s care page or manual for any further approved step. The general guidance here supports warm soapy water and soaking; it does not establish one stronger cleaner, abrasive powder or home remedy as safe for every ceramic nonstick coating.
All-Clad’s general cookware care guidance mentions boiling equal parts white vinegar and water for severe residue. That advice is not established as safe for every ceramic nonstick surface. Use it only if the instructions for your specific cookware say it is suitable; do not treat it as a universal ceramic-pan remedy. This distinction matters because a direction for a general cookware range is not automatically a direction for every coated pan.
Can ceramic cookware go in the dishwasher?
There is no single dishwasher rule for all ceramic nonstick cookware. Manufacturer directions vary even between product lines, and a “dishwasher safe” rating does not mean handwashing is discouraged. Check the model-specific manual or care page; if you cannot confirm the rating, handwashing with a soft tool follows the broadest shared guidance in the sources below.
Calphalon’s care page lists dishwasher-safe ceramic products while also recommending handwashing, and its product-line ratings differ. All-Clad’s care section for its hard-anodized ceramic nonstick line says to handwash. Those examples are enough to show why the word “ceramic” alone cannot determine how a pan should be washed in a machine.
| Manufacturer guidance | What it says | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Calphalon | Its care page lists dishwasher-safe ceramic products while also recommending handwashing; product-line ratings differ. | Check the listing or instructions for your specific Calphalon line rather than assuming every ceramic item has the same rating. |
| All-Clad | Its hard-anodized ceramic nonstick care section says to handwash. | Handwash that line; do not apply a dishwasher rating from another maker or product range. |
These examples show why “ceramic pans are dishwasher safe” and “ceramic pans must never go in the dishwasher” are both too broad. The exact model’s instructions are the deciding source. If the manual is not available, check the cookware maker’s official care page rather than guessing from the pan’s appearance or from the directions for a different product line.

When handwashing is recommended or the dishwasher rating is unclear, the routine remains straightforward: let the pan cool, wash with warm water and mild soap using a soft tool, rinse and dry. Do not use a dishwasher simply because another ceramic pan is labeled safe, and do not assume that every dishwasher-safe item has the same rating.
What to avoid while washing and storing
- Steel wool and metal scouring pads: Manufacturers and ILAG advise against these abrasive tools on ceramic cooking surfaces.
- Abrasive cleansers and harsh cleaners: Do not use them unless the instructions for your exact cookware specifically permit the product.
- The rough side of a dish sponge: Use its soft, non-abrasive side instead.
- Sharp scraping tools: Do not use a knife or other sharp implement to lift stuck food. Soak the pan and wipe gently instead.
- Cold water on a hot pan: Let cookware cool before washing to reduce the risk of thermal shock and warping.
- Unverified residue treatments: A method recommended for general cookware may not be suitable for a particular ceramic coating. Confirm it in the model-specific instructions first.
- Unprotected stacking: Put a cloth or pan protector between stacked pans to help protect their surfaces.
The avoid list is not a demand to buy a particular cleaner or accessory. A soft sponge or brush and mild dish soap are sufficient for the general routine described by the manufacturers. Pan protectors are simply an optional way to separate stacked pans, as are cloths that can be placed between them.
Sponge or soft brush: which should you use?
Both a soft, non-abrasive sponge and a soft-bristle brush appear in manufacturer care guidance. Choose based on what is easier to hold and maneuver around the pan’s corners. The important distinction is not sponge versus brush; it is soft and non-abrasive versus a tool or surface that scours the coating.
There is no supported performance comparison showing that one of these gentle tools extends coating life more than the other. Choose the one that lets you clean with light, controlled movements, and avoid switching to an abrasive option when food resists. For stubborn residue, a soak is the supported next step.
How to store ceramic cookware
Rinse and dry the pan before putting it away. If you stack cookware, place a cloth or cookware protector between pans. Calphalon and ZWILLING include this storage precaution, which offers a simple way to keep one pan from sitting directly against another. A protector is an optional accessory; a cloth can serve as the separator described in the guidance.
Storage care is easy to overlook because it happens after washing, but it completes the same gentle-care approach: avoid unnecessary contact that could scuff the cooking surfaces. If your cookware maker gives a different storage instruction for a particular set, follow that model-specific direction.

Use the care instructions for your exact pan
For broad everyday cleaning, the sources agree on cooling the pan, washing gently with warm soapy water, avoiding abrasives, and drying it before storage. They do not establish one dishwasher rule, one soak duration for every brand, or one special cleaner that is safe for all ceramic coatings. Calphalon, Le Creuset, ZWILLING and All-Clad provide cookware-specific care guidance, while ILAG, a coating supplier, directs consumers to follow the cookware manufacturer’s instructions. Consult that maker’s manual or official care page whenever the question involves a dishwasher, a stubborn deposit or a special cleaning treatment.

In particular, do not transfer a detail just because it appears in care advice from a familiar brand. Le Creuset’s 15-to-20-minute soak belongs to its own instructions; All-Clad’s vinegar method appears on a general cookware care page and is not a universal ceramic recommendation; and a dishwasher-safe Calphalon product does not set the rating for another product line. The maker’s guidance for the exact pan is the way to resolve those differences.
The underlying routine is consistent and easy to remember: cool fully, use warm water and mild soap, choose a soft non-abrasive tool, soak rather than scrape, rinse and dry, then separate pans if stacking. When you reach a question the routine cannot answer—particularly dishwasher use or a special residue treatment—check the precise product instructions first.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I clean ceramic cookware without damaging the coating?
Let the pan cool completely, then wash it with warm water and mild dish soap using a soft, non-abrasive sponge, cloth or soft-bristle brush. Rinse and dry it. Avoid steel wool, metal scouring pads, abrasive cleaners and the rough side of a sponge.
Can ceramic nonstick pans go in the dishwasher?
It depends on the exact cookware line. Calphalon lists some ceramic products as dishwasher-safe while recommending handwashing, whereas All-Clad says to handwash its hard-anodized ceramic nonstick line. Check the manual or official care page for your model; if you cannot confirm its rating, handwash it.
How do I get stuck food off a ceramic pan?
After the pan cools, soak it in warm soapy water and then wipe with a soft sponge, cloth or brush. Le Creuset specifies 15 to 20 minutes for its cookware, but that timing is not a universal rule for other brands. Do not scrape with a knife or switch to an abrasive pad.
