Clean every bottle part before you sterilize or sanitize it. Wash your hands, take the bottle apart, rinse each piece, scrub everything in hot soapy water in a clean basin reserved for infant-feeding items, rinse again, and let the parts air-dry completely. A sterilizer cannot reliably compensate for milk or formula residue left on a nipple, valve, or bottle wall.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) calls the extra germ-removal step sanitizing. Its current guidance, dated March 19, 2025, recommends cleaning after every feeding, then sanitizing according to the bottle maker’s instructions. Read the manufacturer’s instructions first because plastics, nipples, valves, and coatings can have different heat and chemical limits.
Why cleaning comes before sterilizing
Cleaning removes milk, formula, saliva, and other residue by using water, soap, and friction. Sanitizing or sterilizing is a later step intended to reduce germs that may remain after cleaning. Heat or chemical treatment works more predictably on a visibly clean surface than on dried food residue.
CDC’s instruction is explicit: before sanitizing, clean the feeding items, bottle brush, and wash basin using one of its approved methods. The full procedure is in CDC’s “How to Clean, Sanitize, and Store Infant Feeding Items”. Its frequently asked questions page, dated April 16, 2024, is available at CDC’s infant-feeding cleaning FAQ.

A bottle that is merely rinsed still contains places where germs can multiply, especially nipple holes, valves, threads, and membranes. Clean the bottle after every feeding rather than waiting for a batch of bottles to accumulate. If a baby does not finish a bottle within two hours, discard the unfinished formula instead of refrigerating it for another feeding.
What to prepare before washing
Check the bottle’s instructions
Confirm which parts are dishwasher-safe, boil-safe, steam-safe, or compatible with a chemical sanitizer. Some nipples and valves can deform, cloud, split, or lose their seal when exposed to temperatures or chemicals that are acceptable for the bottle itself. Use the maker’s directions for the specific model, and replace a part if it is cracked, sticky, permanently cloudy, torn, or no longer seals.
Set up dedicated equipment
- A clean basin or container used only for infant-feeding items.
- Hot water and dish soap.
- A clean brush reserved for bottles and their parts.
- A clean, unused dish towel or paper towel for the drying surface.
- A protected area where parts can remain undisturbed while they air-dry.
A dedicated basin and brush keep food residue and microorganisms from a kitchen sink or general-purpose cleaning tools from being transferred to feeding parts. CDC does not establish that one brush or basin brand performs better than another; the important characteristics are cleanliness, dedicated use, and complete drying.
Hand-wash baby bottles: the complete sequence
Use this method when the bottle or any removable component is not dishwasher-safe, when the manufacturer’s instructions require hand washing, or when you want direct control over every surface.
- Wash your hands for 20 seconds. Use soap and running water, then rinse. Clean hands are needed both before washing and before handling parts after sanitizing.
- Take the bottle apart completely. Separate the bottle, nipple, cap, ring, valve, membrane, and any other removable component. A closed nipple assembly can trap milk even when the outside looks clean.
- Rinse each part immediately. Hold the pieces under running warm or cold water to flush away loose milk or formula. Do not place used parts directly in the sink, where they can contact residue from dishes or the drain.
- Wash in the dedicated basin. Fill the clean basin with hot water and soap. Scrub every surface with the bottle brush, including threads, corners, the underside of the ring, and the inside of the bottle. Use a brush dedicated to infant-feeding items. Squeeze or flex the nipple so soapy water passes through each nipple opening; clean valves and membranes from both sides without stretching or damaging them.
- Rinse away all soap. Rinse under running water, or submerge the parts completely in fresh water in a separate clean basin reserved for feeding items. Continue until no suds or slippery film remains.
- Air-dry without wiping. Put the pieces on a clean, unused dish towel or paper towel in a protected area. Keep them separated so air reaches the inside and outside. Let them dry completely; do not rub or pat them with a dish towel, which can transfer germs or fibers back to the parts.
- Clean the washing equipment. Rinse the basin and brush and let both air-dry after each use. Under routine conditions, wash them every few days. If the baby is younger than two months, was born prematurely, or has a weakened immune system, wash the basin and brush after every use.
Do not reassemble a bottle while any component is damp. Moisture trapped between a nipple, ring, and valve gives microorganisms a place to grow and can make a clean bottle dirty again.
Using a dishwasher instead of hand washing
The dishwasher is appropriate only when the bottle maker identifies every part as dishwasher-safe. Disassemble the bottle first and rinse off loose residue. Place pieces so water can reach all surfaces. Put nipples, valves, membranes, and other small parts in a closed-top dishwasher basket or mesh bag so they cannot fall onto the heating element or into the filter.

- Wash your hands and disassemble the bottle.
- Rinse the pieces to remove loose milk or formula.
- Load the parts in the dishwasher, securing small components in a closed basket or mesh bag.
- Run the cycle specified by the manufacturer. A hot-water cycle with heated drying or a sanitizing setting provides the additional germ-removal step described by CDC.
- Wash your hands before removing the clean parts. If they are still wet when the cycle ends, transfer them to a clean unused towel or paper towel and let them air-dry completely.
CDC says a separate sanitizing step is not necessary when the dishwasher uses hot water together with heated drying or a sanitizing setting. If the machine does not provide those conditions, follow the bottle maker’s instructions for an additional sanitizing method.

How to sanitize after cleaning
Sanitize only after washing and rinsing. CDC recommends sanitizing daily or more often when extra germ removal is needed, particularly for babies younger than two months, babies born prematurely, or babies with weakened immune systems. For an older, healthy baby, daily sanitizing may not be necessary if every part is carefully cleaned after each use. Your pediatrician or the bottle manufacturer may recommend a different schedule for a particular medical or product situation.
Boiling
Place disassembled, cleaned parts in boiling water for five minutes, unless the manufacturer says a component cannot tolerate boiling. Remove the parts with clean utensils, place them on a clean unused towel or paper towel, and let them air-dry. Do not boil a part simply because it fits in the pot; verify that the material and assembly are approved for this method.
Steam
Use an electric or microwave steam device only as directed by its instructions and the bottle maker’s instructions. Arrange cleaned, disassembled parts so steam reaches the inside of bottles, nipples, valves, and membranes. Follow the device’s water level, loading, cycle, cooling, and handling directions. Steam exposure does not replace the washing step.
Unscented bleach solution
CDC lists a specified solution made with unscented liquid chlorine bleach as another option. Use the exact dilution, contact time, rinsing or draining procedure, and safety directions on the CDC guidance; do not improvise a concentration or substitute scented, splashless, or mixed cleaning products. After treatment, allow the parts to air-dry completely. Never combine bleach with other cleaners.

Whichever method you use, keep the bottle disassembled during treatment unless the product instructions explicitly say otherwise. Reassembling too early can shield surfaces from heat or solution.
Drying, reassembling, and storing clean bottles
Air-dry every component
Set bottles, nipples, caps, rings, valves, membranes, the basin, and the brush on a clean unused dish towel or paper towel. Leave enough space around each item for air to circulate. Do not use a cloth towel to rub parts dry. A towel can leave lint, and handling can recontaminate a surface that has just been sanitized.
Choose a low-contamination drying area
Use a protected location away from food preparation, splashing water, pets, and household dust. CDC says a clean towel or paper towel is probably more hygienic than a drying rack because racks can trap moisture and may be difficult to clean. If you use a rack, reserve it for infant-feeding items and wash, sanitize, and dry it regularly.
Reassemble only when fully dry
Wash your hands, inspect each piece, and reassemble the bottle after all moisture has evaporated. Make sure the nipple, valve, and membrane are seated according to the manufacturer’s diagram. A poor seal can cause leaks or interfere with venting, while forcing a flexible part into the wrong position can damage it.
Store in a clean, protected place
Keep fully dry bottles and parts in a clean cabinet or another protected area, such as a closed cupboard used for clean dishes. Do not seal damp parts in a container or bag. If you transport a bottle, assemble it with clean hands immediately before use and keep it protected from contact with used feeding equipment.

Timing and maintenance rules that prevent recontamination
- After every feeding: Clean the bottle and all removable parts, even if the bottle appears nearly empty.
- After two hours: Discard unfinished formula when the baby has not finished the bottle within two hours.
- Daily sanitizing: Give extra priority to daily or more frequent sanitizing for babies younger than two months, born prematurely, or with weakened immune systems.
- Basin and brush: Rinse and air-dry after every use; wash them every few days in routine situations, or after every use for the higher-risk groups listed above.
- Before handling clean parts: Wash your hands so freshly sanitized components are not contaminated during removal or assembly.
Cleaning a bottle once at the end of the day is not equivalent to cleaning it after each feeding. Milk residue dries into seams and openings, making later scrubbing less effective and increasing the time that microorganisms can multiply.

Putting a dirty bottle into a sterilizer
Problem: A steam, boiling, or chemical cycle is used without washing away milk or formula first.
Correction: Disassemble, scrub, rinse, and then run the sanitizing method. Sanitizing is a second step, not a substitute for cleaning.
Washing parts in the kitchen sink
Problem: Used parts sit in sink water or touch the drain and nearby dishes.
Correction: Rinse under running water and wash in a clean basin dedicated to infant-feeding items.
Recommended Free Tools
Forgetting valves, membranes, or nipple holes
Problem: The bottle looks clean, but an internal component still contains residue.
Correction: Follow the assembly diagram, separate every removable piece, and squeeze water through nipple openings during scrubbing.
Drying with a kitchen towel
Problem: Wiping transfers fibers or germs to clean parts.
Correction: Place parts on a clean unused towel or paper towel and let them air-dry without touching them.

Choose hand washing when any component is not dishwasher-safe, when the product instructions require it, or when you need to inspect and scrub narrow openings directly. Choose the dishwasher when every component is approved for it and you can secure the small parts. In either case, the required outcome is the same: all residue removed, all parts rinsed, and every component completely dry before storage or assembly.
Emergency water and flood conditions
Routine bottle-cleaning instructions do not override local public-health orders. During an emergency water advisory, follow the instructions issued for your area. CDC warns that water contaminated with harmful chemicals, toxins, or radioactive material cannot be made safe by boiling or adding bleach.
After floodwater contacts nipples, pacifiers, or other hard-to-clean items, discard those items rather than attempting to salvage them. CDC’s emergency guidance, updated and reviewed January 8, 2025, is at “How to Clean Infant Feeding Items During Emergencies.” Use bottled or otherwise approved water and the local authority’s instructions for any items that can safely be cleaned.
