The safest outdoor-furniture routine is simple: identify the frame, finish and fabric; remove loose dirt; wash with mild soap, water and a soft tool approved for that material; rinse when the care instructions call for it; and let everything dry completely. Remove cushions before prolonged rain, cover or shelter clean, dry furniture during severe weather, and never trap moisture beneath a cover.
“Outdoor furniture” is not one material. All-weather wicker, natural teak, powder-coated aluminum and performance fabrics tolerate different cleaners, pressure and treatments. Start with the care label or manufacturer manual, then use the material-specific instructions below.
Why weather damages patio furniture
Outdoor furniture is exposed to water, sunlight, airborne dirt, temperature changes and, in coastal areas, salt. The damage is often cumulative: grime holds moisture against a surface, trapped water encourages fabric and cushion deterioration, salt deposits can corrode finishes or materials, and rough cleaning can permanently mark a coating or woven surface.
Moisture management is the central rule. The outdoor textile and upholstery care guide states: “Please do not let water sit on your furniture‘s surface or cushions for too long—moisture can lead to damage.” That guide’s publisher and publication year are not identified in the retrieved document, so treat its advice as general care guidance and defer to your furniture’s own instructions when they differ.

- Clean before covering: Dirt left under a cover can abrade a finish and retain dampness.
- Dry before storing: A damp cushion or frame can stay wet for days in a sheltered space.
- Use the least aggressive method that works: Mild soap, water and soft tools are a common baseline; bleach, abrasives and high-pressure washing are not universally safe.
- Match protection to exposure: Routine outdoor use, a storm, winter storage and coastal air require different attention.
Identify the material before you clean
Look under the seat, on the underside of a table, beneath a cushion or in the original paperwork for the frame material, surface finish and fabric name. A single set may combine several materials—for example, a powder-coated frame, woven panels and removable cushions—so one cleaner may not be suitable for every part.
Check the label and manual
- Find the furniture care tag, manual or manufacturer product-care page.
- Record any prohibited products, dilution instructions, water-temperature limits and drying requirements.
- Confirm whether the finish is painted, powder-coated, oiled, sealed or intentionally unfinished.
- Check cushion labels before using bleach, solvent, stain remover or a water-repellent treatment.
- Test an approved cleaner on a hidden area first, unless the manufacturer specifically says not to.
KETTLER USA’s materials and maintenance guidance groups outdoor pieces by material and cushion fabric rather than treating all furniture alike. Gloster’s product-care resources likewise organize advice by material and include protective covers as their own care category. Those approaches reflect the practical reason to identify every surface before starting.
The gentle cleaning routine
Use this sequence for routine maintenance, adjusting individual steps to the care instructions for your piece.
- Choose a dry, mild-weather window. You need enough time for hard surfaces, seams and cushions to dry fully before evening dew or a storm.
- Remove cushions and accessories. Take off pillows, covers, trays and removable fabric where possible. Put cushions in a dry, ventilated area while you clean the frame.
- Remove loose debris. Use a soft brush or, where appropriate, a vacuum. Work leaves and grit out of joints, weave openings, slats and underneath the furniture rather than grinding them into the finish.
- Prepare a mild solution. Unless the manual specifies another cleaner, use mild soap and water. Keep the solution weaker than a concentrated household degreaser; stronger is not automatically safer.
- Clean with a soft tool. A soft cloth, sponge or soft-bristle brush should be matched to the material. Use light pressure and short sections so you can rinse residue before it dries.
- Rinse when directed. Rinse away soap with clean water if the instructions call for it. On pieces that must not be saturated, use a damp cloth instead of flooding the surface.
- Dry completely. Wipe hard surfaces with a soft cloth. Stand cushions so air can circulate, open zippers when appropriate, and wait until seams and undersides are dry before replacing them or covering the furniture.
Do not assume a pressure washer, chlorine bleach or abrasive powder is acceptable because a surface is marketed as outdoor-rated. Those methods can remove a finish, roughen fibers or drive water into joints.

Care by material
All-weather wicker
KETTLER’s specific wicker guidance starts with removing trapped leaves and debris using a vacuum or soft-bristle brush. Wipe loose dirt with a damp cloth, then use a mild soap solution for the remaining soil.
- A medium-setting spray hose may help loosen dirt when the care instructions permit it.
- Do not use a high-power pressure washer on KETTLER all-weather wicker.
- Do not use bleach or abrasive cleaners; KETTLER warns that they can permanently damage its all-weather wicker.
- Rinse only as directed, and dry the weave and frame so water is not left in the openings or under the furniture.
Inspect wicker after cleaning for leaves or grit caught where the weave meets the frame. Removing that debris regularly reduces the time moisture remains against the structure.
Natural teak
Natural teak changes appearance outdoors. Arhaus explains that its warm golden color gradually fades to a silvery-grey patina under sun and rain. That color change is a normal appearance option, not proof that the wood has failed.
If you want to preserve more of the original color, Arhaus recommends covering the furniture to limit exposure and protect it from mold and dirt. If you prefer the silvered look, allow the patina to develop and focus on keeping the wood clean and dry. Do not assume teak oil is required for every teak piece; whether to use a color-preserving product depends on the manufacturer’s finish instructions and your appearance preference.

For cleaning, Arhaus recommends either a nonmetallic soft-bristle brush with teak cleaner or warm water with mild dish soap. Scrub gently with the grain, rinse thoroughly, and let the wood dry completely. Use only a cleaner identified as compatible with your teak’s finish; a product intended for unfinished teak may not suit sealed or previously treated wood.
Powder-coated aluminum
Arhaus recommends weekly dusting for powder-coated aluminum. Remove leaves and other debris with a soft brush or hose, then periodically wash with a soft cloth, mild soap and water.
- Rinse soap residue when the care directions call for it and dry with a soft cloth.
- Prevent impacts from tools, toys and hard objects that can chip the coating.
- Do not drag tables or chairs across rough ground; lifting reduces scratches and chips.
- Inspect chipped areas according to the manufacturer’s repair guidance rather than sanding or repainting automatically.
The coating is a finish, not armor. A scratch that exposes the underlying metal deserves attention before repeated wet weather reaches the damaged area.

Brush cushions weekly to remove surface dust. For a fresh spill, blot with an undyed absorbent cloth instead of rubbing it deeper into the fabric. Use a mild cleaner confirmed as compatible with the cushion fabric, rinse as directed, and air-dry completely.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Do not scrub hard; aggressive friction can alter the fabric surface or spread a stain.
- Do not put outdoor cushions in a clothes dryer unless the care label explicitly permits it.
- During rain or other inclement weather, remove cushions whenever practical and place them somewhere dry.
- If a cushion is soaked, stand it on its side with the zipper open so water can drain, then allow it to air-dry fully.
Arhaus publishes a diluted-bleach method for mold and mildew on its InsideOut Performance Fabrics. That method is specific to those fabrics and must not be generalized to another brand or cushion label. Use bleach only when your own care instructions explicitly authorize it, with the stated dilution, contact time and rinsing procedure.
Protective covers
A cover is most useful during winter, heavy rain or another extended period of bad weather. Choose a cover that fits the furniture without forcing seams or trapping large pools of water. Before covering, clean and dry both the furniture and the cover.
- Do not cover damp cushions or a wet frame; the cover can slow evaporation.
- Keep the cover itself clean and dry between uses.
- Arhaus says its outdoor covers can be spot-cleaned with a damp cloth.
- Remove or open the cover as the weather allows so trapped condensation can escape, following the cover maker’s instructions.
Protect furniture before bad weather
Routine outdoor use
Brush or dust frequently enough that grit does not build up in joints and weave openings. Clean spills promptly, especially on cushions. After rain, check undersides, seams and feet rather than judging dryness by the top surface alone.

Heavy rain and storms
- Remove cushions, pillows and fabric accessories and move them to a dry, ventilated place.
- Clear leaves and loose debris from frames and tabletops.
- Cover or move the furniture to a sheltered area if the manufacturer permits covering.
- Secure a suitable cover according to its instructions; do not allow loose fabric to flap against the finish.
- After the weather clears, uncover the furniture when practical and verify that all surfaces are dry before replacing cushions.
Winter or extended storage
Clean the furniture first, rinse when directed, and wait until it is completely dry. Store removable cushions indoors or in another dry area. Move the frame into sheltered storage when possible; otherwise use a clean, dry, properly fitted cover and periodically check for condensation or debris.

Coastal exposure
Salt deposits can corrode finishes or materials, according to the outdoor textile and upholstery care guide. In a coastal location, wash often enough to remove visible salt and residue rather than waiting for a seasonal deep clean. Use the same mild-soap and soft-tool approach, rinse as directed, and dry thoroughly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fabric water-repellent treatments
Outdoor fabric repellency diminishes with use and exposure. The reviewed textile guide recommends refreshing a compatible water-repellent coating at least once per season, or sooner if water stops beading on the surface. This is that guide’s maintenance recommendation, not a universal interval.
- Read the cushion or upholstery care label and confirm that a water-repellent product is allowed.
- Check whether the treatment is compatible with the fabric’s existing finish, color and backing.
- Clean and dry the fabric before applying anything.
- Follow the product’s application, ventilation and curing instructions exactly.
- Test water beading only after the stated curing period, and stop using the treatment if the label warns of discoloration or texture change.
Never use a fabric treatment as a substitute for removing cushions during prolonged rain. Repellency can reduce wetting, but it does not make a cushion waterproof.

Choose care by material, exposure and appearance
| Material or situation | Routine method | Weather protection | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| All-weather wicker | Vacuum or soft-bristle brush; damp cloth; mild soap solution | Keep debris out of the weave; cover or shelter for extended bad weather | KETTLER warns against bleach, abrasive cleaners and high-power pressure washing; a medium-setting spray hose may be acceptable when directed |
| Natural teak | Nonmetallic soft-bristle brush with teak cleaner, or warm water and mild dish soap; rinse and dry | Cover to prolong more of the original golden color and protect against mold and dirt, or allow natural patina | Teak gradually turns silvery-grey; teak oil is not universally required |
| Powder-coated aluminum | Weekly dusting; soft brush or hose; periodic mild soap, water and soft cloth | Cover or shelter during prolonged wet weather | Avoid impacts and dragging that can scratch or chip the coating |
| Outdoor cushions and upholstery | Weekly brushing; blot with an undyed cloth; mild compatible cleaner; rinse and air-dry | Remove during inclement weather; drain soaked cushions on their sides with zippers open | No hard scrubbing or dryer unless the label permits; bleach methods are fabric-specific |
| Coastal location | Wash frequently enough to remove salt deposits | Keep surfaces dry and covered or sheltered during extended exposure | Salt can corrode finishes or materials; follow the same material-specific limits |
Common mistakes and safer alternatives
- Using one cleaner on everything: Separate frame, weave, wood and fabric care; follow each label.
- Pressure-washing by default: Use only the water pressure the manufacturer allows. KETTLER specifically prohibits high-power washing on its all-weather wicker.
- Bleaching without checking: A diluted-bleach procedure for one performance fabric does not authorize bleach on other fabrics, wicker or finishes.
- Covering wet furniture: Dry the furniture and cover first; otherwise the cover can hold moisture against the surface.
- Leaving cushions outside in storms: Remove them, and drain soaked cushions on their sides with zippers open.
- Scrubbing stains aggressively: Blot upholstery and use a mild compatible cleaner; hard scrubbing can damage fibers.
- Dragging coated metal: Lift furniture to avoid chips and scratches in powder-coated aluminum.
- Assuming teak must stay golden: Decide whether you want natural silvery-grey patina or a covered, more original color, then follow the corresponding care approach.
A maintenance calendar you can follow
| When | Action |
|---|---|
| Weekly during regular use | Brush cushions; dust powder-coated aluminum; remove leaves and grit from wicker, teak and joints. |
| After spills | Blot upholstery promptly with an undyed absorbent cloth and clean with a compatible mild product. |
| After rain | Check seams, undersides and cushion interiors; stand wet cushions on their sides with zippers open and air-dry. |
| Before a storm or winter | Clean, rinse where directed, dry completely, remove cushions, and cover or move the furniture to shelter. |
| After extended storage | Inspect for trapped debris, condensation, scratches or chips; clean and dry before returning cushions and using the set. |
| At least once per season, if compatible | Consider refreshing fabric water repellency, or do it sooner if water no longer beads, following the textile label and treatment instructions. |
When the manufacturer’s instructions should win
General routines cannot override a product-specific warning. Stop and consult the manual if the furniture has a specialty coating, embedded electronics, glued or laminated parts, a non-removable cushion, visible finish failure, or a stain that the approved cleaner does not remove. The manufacturer’s limits determine whether you may hose, use a particular wood product, apply bleach, or treat the fabric with a repellent.
The most durable routine is therefore conservative: soft tools, mild compatible cleaners, prompt spill removal, complete drying, and protection that keeps extended weather from reaching clean, dry furniture.
