Safe stand-mixer care is straightforward: disconnect power before cleaning, keep the motor body out of water, and treat every attachment according to its own material and mechanism. A soft damp cloth is suitable for the exterior, but dishwasher and immersion rules vary—even between parts supplied with the same attachment. The exact manual for your mixer and accessory takes precedence over any general rule.
Start safely before cleaning
Disconnect power first
Turn the mixer off and unplug it before wiping the body, cleaning around the beater shaft, or removing an accessory. This prevents an accidental start while your hands are near moving parts and removes power while moisture is present around the controls or attachment hub.
KitchenAid’s product-help instructions use the direct wording: “Turn the Stand Mixer off and unplug it.” Apply that practice to every cleaning session, regardless of whether you are only brushing away flour or removing a pasta roller.

Keep the motor housing dry
The mixer body contains the motor, controls and electrical connections. Wipe it with a soft damp cloth; do not immerse the body or pour water over it. Squeeze excess water from the cloth so it is damp rather than dripping, and work around the speed control, seams and attachment shaft without allowing liquid to run inside.

Model-specific manuals can add details about finishes, removable trim or access panels. If your manual gives a different instruction for a particular part, follow that model guidance.
How to clean the mixer body
Routine wipe-down
- Switch the mixer off and unplug it.
- Remove the bowl and any attachment so you can reach flour, batter or splatter around the hub and shaft.
- Wipe the exterior with a soft damp cloth, including the speed control and the area surrounding the attachment shaft.
- Use a clean, dry cloth to remove remaining moisture before reconnecting power.
Do not use the body as a substitute for an immersion-safe appliance. Even if a spill is large, keep cleaning to the cloth-and-wipe method and consult the owner’s manual for model-specific disassembly or service instructions.
Oil near the shaft is not automatically a fault
KitchenAid notes that a few drops of food-grade oil may appear near the beater shaft, in the bottom of the bowl or around the motor head during a stand mixer’s lifespan, particularly after long storage or an extended period without use. This observation does not authorize adding oil yourself or opening the motor head. Wipe external residue, then use the troubleshooting and care instructions for your exact model if oil continues to appear or is accompanied by unusual noise or operation.

Check an attachment’s construction before using water
There is no universal “dishwasher safe” rule for stand-mixer accessories. Identify the exact attachment and separate its components when the manual allows it. A single accessory may contain metal, plastic, gears, cutting surfaces and housings with different cleaning requirements.

How to clean a pasta roller and cutter attachment
After making pasta
- Turn the mixer off, unplug it and detach the roller or cutter.
- Place the attachment where air can circulate and let the dough residue dry for about one hour.
- Use the supplied cleaning brush to remove the dried pieces from the rollers, cutter openings and channels.
- Polish the attachment with a soft, dry cloth and store it dry at room temperature.
Drying first is intentional. Dough that is still soft can smear deeper into the mechanism; once it has dried, it can be brushed away without introducing water into the roller assembly.

When dough is stuck
The cited KitchenAid instructions allow you to tap the attachment by hand to loosen residue and use a toothpick where necessary. Work gently and keep the tool pointed away from your fingers and the roller surfaces. Never use a knife or another sharp object to remove excess dough, and do not push a towel through moving rollers. A cloth can catch or leave fibers inside the mechanism.
What not to do
- Do not immerse the pasta roller or cutter.
- Do not put it in a dishwasher.
- Do not rinse it under a tap in an attempt to flush dough out.
- Do not use sharp metal tools or force the rollers to turn while cleaning.
How often should you oil a pasta roller?
For the specified KitchenAid pasta roller/cutter gears, KitchenAid recommends applying light mineral oil annually or after 50 uses. That interval applies to the gears of the identified roller/cutter attachments; it is not a universal lubrication schedule for all stand mixers or all pasta accessories.
Check the manual for your exact model before applying oil. Use only the type and amount it specifies, keep oil away from dough-contact surfaces, and do not treat a general stand-mixer oiling question as permission to lubricate the motor, beater shaft or other internal parts yourself. If your manual does not call for user lubrication, leave the mechanism alone and seek the manufacturer’s service guidance for stiffness, grinding or abnormal noise.
Cleaning a pasta press: separate the parts
A pasta press illustrates why an attachment cannot be assigned one cleaning method. In the cited KitchenAid instructions, the housing, cutter and pasta plates are cleaned by hand with a soft damp cloth. They must not be immersed or put in a dishwasher.
The pasta ring, auger and combo tool follow a different rule: they may be hand-washed in warm sudsy water or placed on the dishwasher’s top rack. Remove these parts as directed, clean them separately, and allow them to dry completely before reassembly or storage.

Cleaning a food grinder without damaging it
Plastic grinder assemblies
KitchenAid’s plastic food-grinder instructions identify certain pieces as safe for the dishwasher’s top rack. The same instructions require handwashing and thorough drying for the main housing, grind screw, plates and blade. The approved list differs by grinder model, so identify each piece rather than relying on its color or material.
After handwashing a required component, remove trapped water from openings and dry it thoroughly before storage. Moisture left around the screw, plates or blade can remain hidden even when the outside feels dry.
Metal grinder assemblies
The cited metal-grinder instructions say all metal parts are hand-wash only. Dishwasher detergent and harsh cleaners can cause aluminum oxidation, which may leave gray or black residue. Wash the parts by hand with the cleaner and method specified in the manual, rinse as directed, and dry them completely before putting the grinder away.
Do not transfer the plastic-grinder dishwasher rule to a metal grinder. Conversely, do not assume that every plastic part is dishwasher safe; only the pieces named by the manual qualify.
How to decide whether an attachment can go in the dishwasher
Use this sequence whenever you acquire a new accessory or cannot remember its care rule:
- Read the manual for the exact attachment model and revision.
- List the removable components separately.
- For each component, confirm whether the manufacturer permits immersion, handwashing, a dishwasher, or only dry brushing.
- If dishwasher use is allowed, check the specified rack. “Top rack” is a component-specific instruction, not approval for the whole attachment.
- Check the required drying method before reassembly and storage.
- If the manual is unavailable or ambiguous, choose the least aggressive method—dry brushing or a carefully controlled damp-cloth wipe—and contact the manufacturer rather than guessing.
Material and construction provide useful clues, but they do not replace the manual. Gears, aluminum surfaces, bearings and enclosed housings can have different tolerances even when they appear similar from the outside.

Maintenance habits that prevent buildup
Clean immediately after a session
Brush or wipe loose flour and batter from the mixer and accessories soon after use. For pasta rollers, the manufacturer’s one-hour air-drying step is the exception to “clean immediately”: allow the dough to dry so it can be removed as intended, then brush and wipe the attachment.

Return clean accessories to a dry storage location at room temperature. Do not seal a component in a container while it is still damp, and do not stack wet parts inside one another. Keep brushes and small tools with the attachment so the approved cleaning method is available next time.
Inspect before the next use
- Look for dried dough in roller channels, cutter slots, grinder openings or pasta-press passages.
- Check that every washed component is fully dry.
- Confirm that blades, plates, augers and cutters are installed in the orientation shown by the manual.
- Look for gray or black residue on metal grinder parts, which can indicate an unsuitable cleaner or dishwasher cycle.
- Check for cracked plastic, damaged cutters or loose parts before connecting the attachment.
Common cleaning mistakes and their fixes
“I put the whole attachment in the dishwasher.”
Stop using it until you verify the manual. Separate the components and inspect for oxidation, warped plastic, damaged finishes or trapped moisture. For future cycles, load only parts explicitly approved for the dishwasher and use the rack specified by the manufacturer.
“I rinsed the pasta roller because brushing was taking too long.”
Do not repeat the rinse. The cited roller instructions prohibit immersion and dishwashing. Let any remaining dough dry, then use the supplied brush, gentle hand-tapping and a toothpick for limited access points. Avoid knives and other sharp objects.
“The grinder has a gray or black film after washing.”
For metal grinder parts, this can result from aluminum oxidation caused by dishwasher detergent or harsh cleaners. Stop using the affected parts until they are cleaned according to the metal-grinder manual; replace parts if the manufacturer says the surface is no longer suitable for food contact.

“The mixer was wiped while still plugged in.”
Unplug it before any further cleaning around the controls, shaft or hub. If liquid entered the housing, do not reconnect power until the owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s service guidance says it is safe.

“The attachment feels stiff after storage.”
Do not force the mechanism or add random lubricant. Check whether the manual specifies light mineral oil and an interval for that exact attachment. The KitchenAid interval of annually or after 50 uses applies only to the specified pasta roller/cutter gears. For any other attachment, use the manufacturer’s troubleshooting or service instructions.
A practical care schedule
After every use
- Disconnect power before removing accessories.
- Wipe the mixer exterior and clear visible flour, batter and splatter.
- Clean each attachment using its approved method.
- Dry parts completely before storage.
After making pasta
- Air-dry the pasta roller/cutter for about one hour.
- Brush away dough, using a toothpick only where the instructions permit.
- Wipe with a soft dry cloth and store at room temperature.
Annually or at the specified use count

Choosing useful cleaning tools
If the included pasta-attachment brush is missing or worn, a compatible stand-mixer attachment cleaning brush is the most direct replacement category. Verify compatibility with the exact attachment and check whether the original manufacturer supplies a replacement before buying a third-party tool. A brush is not a reason to put a roller or cutter under running water.

When to stop cleaning and seek service
Cleaning cannot correct every mechanical problem. Stop using an attachment and consult the manufacturer if you find a cracked housing, bent cutter, damaged blade, persistent grinding, unusual resistance, recurring oil around the motor head, or residue that cannot be removed without sharp tools or aggressive chemicals. Keep the model and attachment numbers available so the care instructions match the hardware you own.
For ordinary upkeep, the reliable approach is deliberately conservative: unplug first, wipe the mixer body without immersing it, dry-clean mechanisms that prohibit water, and handle dishwasher-safe parts only as their manuals specify. That prevents the most common damage while preserving the manufacturer’s maintenance requirements for gears and food-contact components.
