To make a multi-tool open smoothly, remove loose grit and residue, clean each implement with a method compatible with the residue and materials, dry the tool completely, then apply a small amount of PTFE (Teflon)-based lubricant to the pivots. Work every implement through its travel, wipe away excess, and repeat the process whenever contamination or moisture makes movement rough. Leatherman’s instructions are the basis for the detailed sequence below; for another manufacturer’s tool, its own care instructions take precedence.

What this maintenance fixes

Folding blades, pliers, drivers, scissors and other implements share pivot hardware. Dust, grit, dried food, adhesive, tar and salt deposits can collect around those joints and between blades. The result is a tool that feels gritty, binds before it reaches the fully open position, or requires excessive force to close. Residue can also hold moisture against metal surfaces, increasing corrosion risk.

Cleaning removes the material that interferes with movement. Drying prevents water from remaining in hidden joints. Lubrication then reduces friction at pivoting and wear areas. These are separate jobs: oil cannot reliably compensate for packed grit, and adding lubricant before drying can trap moisture.

Check the tool and gather compatible supplies first

Confirm which manufacturer’s instructions apply

The sequence in this guide follows Leatherman’s published maintenance guidance. Other multi-tools may use different finishes, plastics, coatings, locking systems or lubrication requirements. Read the manual or care page for your exact model before using a solvent, separating a handle, or attempting any repair. Do not assume that a method approved for one brand is safe for every tool.

Use a controlled work area

  • Open implements carefully and keep fingertips away from blade edges and pinch points.
  • Work over a clean, stable surface so small parts or debris are not lost.
  • Have a soft-bristle brush, clean water, mild detergent, absorbent cloths and a PTFE/Teflon-based lubricant available.
  • Use non-metallic abrasive material only when needed for a surface stain, and avoid aggressive scraping that could alter an edge or finish.

Wear eye protection if brushing can dislodge particles. If you use mineral spirits or turpentine for tar, follow the solvent’s label, provide appropriate ventilation, and keep the liquid away from materials that the tool manufacturer says are incompatible.

Follow this cleaning and lubrication sequence

1. Inspect and remove loose debris

Open the implements as far as they move safely. Look at both sides of each pivot, the gaps between folded blades and the channels where tools nest. Brush away loose grit with soft bristles. A soft-bristle brush is also suitable for surface stains according to Leatherman’s guidance. For a stain that does not lift with brushing, use a non-metallic abrasive lightly and locally rather than grinding on the finish.

Do not force an implement past a binding point simply to open it farther. Note which implement is affected and whether the resistance is caused by visible debris, sticky material, moisture or apparent mechanical damage. That observation determines the next cleaning method.

2. Match the method to the residue

Residue or condition Appropriate first action Important limitation
Loose dirt or grit Brush with soft bristles while the implements are open. Do not replace brushing with a metal pick that can scratch or deform parts.
Sticky material or debris between blades Use a mild detergent-and-water solution, then remove the loosened residue. Clean and dry fully before applying lubricant.
Surface staining Use a soft brush; if necessary, a non-metallic abrasive with a light touch. This is not permission for aggressive polishing or abrasive work inside pivots.
Tar or a similar substance Leatherman names turpentine or other mineral spirits for this type of residue. Check compatibility with plastics, coatings and finishes first; solvent advice is not universal across multi-tools.
Moisture in a joint A low-viscosity oil can help force moisture out of joints. It does not remove packed debris, and the tool still needs to be cleaned and dried before the normal relubrication step.

3. Clean ordinary dirt and sticky residue

For dirt or sticky deposits between blades, prepare a mild detergent-and-water solution. Apply it where the residue is located and work the implement gently through its available movement so the solution can reach the contaminated surfaces. Brush the joint and blade gaps until the material is released. Remove the loosened solution and residue rather than allowing it to dry in place.

Use only the amount of water needed for the cleaning job, and pay particular attention to crevices that can retain liquid. The objective is to remove contamination without leaving a new deposit of detergent or water behind.

4. Treat tar without assuming universal solvent compatibility

For tar and similar substances, Leatherman identifies turpentine or other mineral spirits. These solvents are not automatically safe for every multi-tool. Acetone and brake cleaners deserve particular caution: Leatherman warns that they may damage plastic components. Do not present either as a general-purpose shortcut, and do not use them around a tool’s plastic parts unless the applicable manufacturer explicitly permits it.

Use the smallest practical amount of an approved solvent on the affected residue, prevent it from spreading into unapproved areas, and follow the solvent manufacturer’s handling instructions. After the residue is gone, remove solvent traces according to the tool maker’s directions, then dry the tool completely.

5. Dry every joint before adding lubricant

Leatherman instructs owners to clean and dry the product before relubricating. The cited guidance does not prescribe a number of minutes or an equivalent fixed drying time. Instead of relying on a timer, inspect the pivots, blade gaps and handle channels and continue drying until no visible moisture remains. Wipe accessible surfaces with a clean cloth and allow hidden areas to finish drying before oil is introduced.

If moisture entered a joint during cleaning, move the implement through its safe range several times while wiping around the pivot. Do not close the tool while liquid is still collecting in a recess. A low-viscosity oil may help displace moisture, but it should not be used to skip the cleaning and drying stages.

6. Lubricate the pivots and wear areas

Leatherman’s maintenance guidance states: “For pivoting or wear areas, use a PTFE / Teflon-based lubricant to make your tool function as smoothly as possible.” Apply a small amount directly to the moving pivot areas and other specified wear points. The goal is a thin film, not a pool of oil inside the handle.

Open and close each implement repeatedly to distribute the lubricant through the joint. Move slowly at first so you can feel whether grit or a hard obstruction remains. When the movement becomes even, wipe excess lubricant from exposed surfaces. Leaving a wet exterior attracts dust and can transfer oil to items the tool contacts.

7. Test every implement before putting the tool away

Check blades, pliers, drivers, scissors and other implements individually. Each should move through its intended range without a new grinding sensation or a sudden hard stop. Confirm that any locking or retention feature behaves as designed for the model. If one implement still binds after the contamination is gone and the pivot has been lubricated, stop applying force and use the troubleshooting section below.

Respond immediately to saltwater and marine exposure

Saltwater deserves a separate response because dissolved salts can remain after the visible water has evaporated. Leatherman specifically advises rinsing the tool with fresh water after saltwater or marine exposure, drying it, and lubricating it with light oil.

  1. Rinse away saltwater residue with fresh water.
  2. Dry the tool thoroughly, including the pivot gaps and spaces between implements.
  3. Apply light oil as directed for the exposure, then work the implements to distribute it.
  4. Wipe away excess from exposed surfaces and inspect for early corrosion.

Stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, not rust-proof. A stainless tool can still develop oxidation when salts, moisture or contamination remain on the surface. Do not treat the stainless designation as a reason to postpone rinsing and drying.

What to do about rust or oxidation

Separate surface staining from a mechanical fault

A brown mark may be a surface stain, while rough movement can indicate contamination inside a pivot or actual damage. Start with the gentle cleaning sequence: soft brush, residue-appropriate cleaner, complete drying and PTFE-based lubrication. For a surface stain, Leatherman permits a non-metallic abrasive; use it only on the affected surface and with minimal pressure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The available guidance does not establish a universal rust-removal chemical, a polishing procedure for internal pivots or a guarantee that every corrosion mark can be restored. Avoid escalating to aggressive abrasives or strong solvents simply because a stain remains visible. If corrosion has pitted a part, weakened an edge, changed the fit of a pivot or caused a lock to malfunction, cleaning is no longer a complete remedy.

Understand the warranty implication

Leatherman’s warranty page says corrosion is excluded from its limited warranty. Coverage and the service process depend on the applicable region and warranty terms, so check the documentation for your tool before assuming that rust-related work will be covered.

How often should you maintain a multi-tool?

Leatherman recommends periodic cleaning, drying and relubrication but does not set a numeric calendar interval in the cited guidance. A fixed monthly or yearly schedule would therefore be an invented precision. Inspect the tool based on use and conditions instead:

  • Clean when grit, adhesive, food residue or other material is visible.
  • Clean and relubricate after saltwater or marine exposure.
  • Check movement whenever an implement begins to feel rough, squeak or bind.
  • Inspect after storage in a damp or dirty environment before relying on the tool.

Heavy outdoor, workshop or marine use can create a need for attention sooner than occasional dry use. The deciding evidence is the tool’s condition, not an arbitrary date.

Troubleshoot a tool that still will not open smoothly

The implement feels gritty after oiling

Stop adding lubricant. Grit trapped in a pivot can make the joint feel worse when mixed with oil. Reopen the tool, brush out loose particles, clean residue with the appropriate method, dry it and then apply a thin PTFE-based film. If the gritty sensation remains, the joint may contain damage or contamination that requires service.

The implement is sticky rather than gritty

Sticky resistance usually calls for residue removal, not heavier oil. Use the mild detergent-and-water method for sticky substances or debris between blades. For tar-like material, use only a solvent the manufacturer allows for the tool’s materials; remember that acetone and brake cleaners may damage plastic components.

The joint is wet or shows renewed oxidation

Rinse away salts with fresh water if marine exposure is possible, then dry every accessible and hidden area. Use light oil for the saltwater response described by Leatherman, and use the manufacturer-recommended PTFE-based lubricant for pivoting or wear areas after cleaning and drying. Repeated oxidation despite proper care is a reason to request manufacturer guidance.

An implement stops at one point or will not align

Do not force it, bend the handles or attempt aggressive disassembly. Inspect for a lodged object and perform the gentle cleaning sequence once. If the obstruction is not clearly removable or the tool appears bent, cracked or otherwise damaged, stop using it and contact the manufacturer’s service process.

Lubricant is leaking onto everything

Use less. Work the implement to distribute a small amount at the pivot, then wipe the outside until it no longer feels wet. Excess lubricant does not provide extra protection and can collect airborne dust.

When manufacturer service is the right next step

Escalate instead of forcing the mechanism when cleaning and lubrication do not restore movement, when a pivot appears damaged, or when a blade, lock or handle has been altered by corrosion or impact. Leatherman describes a repair or replacement process; other manufacturers may use different procedures. Record the model, the symptoms and any exposure to saltwater or solvents so the service team can assess the problem accurately.

Before sending a tool for service, remove loose dirt, identify any solvent used and follow the manufacturer’s shipping and safety instructions. Do not assume that a warranty covers corrosion: Leatherman’s stated limited warranty excludes corrosion, and regional terms control the actual outcome.

Optional maintenance supplies and kits

You do not need a branded bundle to perform the basic sequence. A soft-bristle brush, mild detergent, clean water, lint-free cloths and a compatible PTFE-based pivot lubricant address the core tasks. Choose products by material compatibility and the residue you need to remove, not by a generic claim that one formula suits every multi-tool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leatherman also lists an optional Tool Maintenance Kit containing a blade sharpener, cleaning supplies, a mat, a microfiber cloth and lubrication oil. Contents, price and availability can change, so verify the current listing before buying. The kit is not a substitute for following the instructions for your particular model.

Quick maintenance checklist
