A Leatherman is easiest to protect with model-aware, residue-specific care: remove grit without forcing the pivots, use the least aggressive cleaner that works, rinse away salt, dry every joint, lubricate moving and wear surfaces, and verify that each implement locks and moves normally. Stainless steel resists corrosion but is not rust-proof, so regular cleaning matters.
What proper maintenance prevents
Dirt, dried food, tree sap, pocket lint and salt can work into pivots and locking surfaces. The result may be stiff handles, gritty movement, poor locking, stained steel or corrosion under trapped moisture. Leatherman’s official Maintenance Tips puts the material limitation plainly: “Stainless steel is not rust proof; it is corrosion-resistant.”
Maintenance is not a single universal solvent or a fixed calendar interval. Different models use different combinations of steel, coatings, liners, springs and plastic parts. Check the manual for your exact model before disassembly, unusual solvent use or any procedure that requires removing hardware. The instructions below cover external cleaning and routine care without assuming that a tool must be taken apart.
Supplies and what each one is for
| Task | Suitable supply | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Dry dirt in joints and gaps | Soft-bristle brush; cleaning pick; cotton swab | Work with the implements open and avoid forcing debris deeper into a pivot. |
| Sticky food, mud or general residue | Mild detergent solution and water | Rinse away detergent and dry completely afterward. |
| Moisture displacement in joints | Low-viscosity oil such as WD-40, Liquid Wrench or CRC 3-36 | Use it for moisture displacement and cleaning support; it is not automatically the best long-term pivot lubricant. |
| Tar-like contamination | Turpentine or another mineral spirit named in Leatherman’s guidance | Use only with ventilation and after confirming compatibility with your model’s plastics and finishes. |
| Pivot and wear lubrication | PTFE/Teflon-based lubricant | Apply sparingly and wipe off excess so it does not attract grit. |
| Surface stains | Microfiber or polishing cloth; non-metallic abrasive such as a Scotchbrite pad; soft brush | Do not use an abrasive that can remove a coating you intend to keep. |
| Sharpening | Plain-edge sharpener; serration-compatible sharpener | Plain and serrated sections have different bevel geometry. |
Leatherman’s US Tool Maintenance Kit bundles a ceramic blade sharpener, cleaning supplies, cleaning mat, microfiber cloth, lubrication oil, pick, swabs and brush; the multi-tool itself is not included. The page showed a listed price of $69.95 USD and an unavailable/backordered status on October 13, 2026. Treat both price and stock as changeable and verify them before buying. Individual oil, brushes and a suitable sharpener may be more practical if you already own basic supplies.

How do I clean a Leatherman?
1. Identify the model and make it safe
- Locate the model manual and read any model-specific warnings, especially if your tool has plastic scales, replaceable cutters, unusual coatings or a complex locking system.
- Move to a well-lit, ventilated work area. Wear eye protection if dried debris may flake or if you will use mineral spirits.
- Close or secure blades whenever your cleaning position allows. Open only the implement you need to reach a joint, and keep fingers clear of every edge.
- Remove the tool from a sheath or pocket clip so trapped moisture and grit are not left against the handle.
2. Remove loose debris before adding liquid
Open accessible implements carefully and brush dirt from pivots, handle gaps, locking areas and tool channels with a soft-bristle brush. A pick can lift compacted material from a narrow recess, while a swab reaches residue around a pivot. Do not pry against a spring, lock bar or blade edge. Brushing first prevents dry grit from becoming abrasive slurry when cleaner is applied.
3. Match the cleaner to the residue
- Sticky food, mud or ordinary grime: Use a mild detergent solution and water on a cloth, swab or brush. Work the solution into the affected area rather than soaking the entire tool unnecessarily.
- Moisture in a joint: Leatherman’s maintenance guidance identifies low-viscosity oils such as WD-40, Liquid Wrench and CRC 3-36 as aids for forcing moisture out of joints. Use a controlled amount, move the joint, then wipe away contaminated oil.
- Tar or similarly stubborn residue: The manufacturer suggests turpentine or other mineral spirits. Apply the smallest practical amount to the residue, provide ventilation and keep the solvent away from materials that your model manual says are incompatible.
- Unknown solvent advice: Do not reach automatically for acetone or brake cleaner. Leatherman warns that these can damage plastic components.
Never mix cleaners. If a solvent is necessary, test a hidden, noncritical spot first and stop if the finish, scale or coating changes.
4. Rinse when the cleaner or exposure requires it
After detergent cleaning, remove soap with clean water. After mineral-spirit use, follow the solvent’s safety directions and ensure residue has evaporated before lubrication. For any saltwater or marine exposure, use fresh water to flush salt from joints and recesses; salt crystals left behind continue attracting moisture.

Dry the tool with a clean cloth, then work each implement through its range so hidden water can escape. Pay attention to pivot gaps, handle channels, locking surfaces, cutter openings and the area beneath removable accessories. The official guidance does not prescribe a particular drying machine, temperature or number of hours, so do not use high heat or an invented schedule as a substitute for checking that the tool is actually dry.

- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
6. Lubricate and wipe down
Leatherman advises that a product should be cleaned, dried and re-lubricated periodically to inhibit rust and corrosion. Put a small amount of light oil on pivot areas after saltwater exposure or wet cleaning. For pivoting or wear areas, use a PTFE/Teflon-based lubricant as recommended in the manufacturer’s maintenance material. These roles are related but not identical: a low-viscosity oil can displace moisture during cleaning, while a PTFE-based product is intended for ongoing movement and wear lubrication.
Move the handles and implements repeatedly to distribute lubricant, then wipe the exterior and any visible excess. A thin film is preferable to a wet surface that collects pocket lint and abrasive dust. Leatherman does not publish a universal oil quantity or interval; inspect movement and condition instead of following a made-up number.
7. Check operation before storage or use
- Open and close every implement without catching or grinding.
- Confirm that locks engage fully and release only through their intended controls.
- Check that replaceable wire cutters, bit holders and removable accessories are seated.
- Look for remaining grit, water beads, discolored spots or an oily film that could contaminate hands or materials.
- Wipe the tool dry and store it in a dry location, not sealed immediately in a damp sheath.
How do I clean a multi-tool after saltwater?
Saltwater deserves its own procedure because salt residue accelerates corrosion in crevices. Leatherman’s instruction is direct: “If so, rinse in fresh water, dry, and lubricate it with a light oil.” Apply that sequence as soon as reasonably possible after marine use.
- Open only the implements needed to expose the pivots and rinse the tool thoroughly with fresh water.
- Brush away softened salt and sand from joints, locks and handle channels. Avoid grinding grit into a pivot by forcing a stiff implement.
- Rinse again until no visible crystals or sandy residue remain.
- Dry the exterior and operate each joint while drying so water is not trapped behind a handle or lock.
- Apply light oil to the pivots, move the tool through its range, and wipe off the excess.
- Inspect the next time you use it for orange spots, rough movement or a lock that does not fully engage.
There is no manufacturer-stated universal saltwater interval. Frequent marine users should make this rinse-and-dry check part of their normal post-trip routine rather than waiting for visible rust.

How do I lubricate a Leatherman?
Lubricate only after loose dirt and water have been removed. Place a controlled drop or thin application at each accessible pivot and other metal-on-metal wear point identified by your model manual. Open and close the implement repeatedly, then wipe the outside and the joint edges. If movement remains gritty after cleaning and lubrication, stop adding oil; the problem may be embedded debris, a damaged component or a pivot that requires model-specific service.
For routine pivot and wear lubrication, choose a PTFE/Teflon-based lubricant. For a wet or salty tool, light oil is useful after rinsing and drying. Do not treat a general penetrating or moisture-displacing oil as a substitute for every lubrication task, and do not flood the tool. Excess lubricant migrates onto blades, attracts dust and can make a locking surface slippery.
How do I remove rust from a Leatherman?
First determine whether it is surface staining or coating damage
Orange or brown marks on uncoated stainless surfaces may be superficial corrosion, but a black-oxide finish is a conversion coating that naturally wears with use. Deep pitting, flaking coating, a loose pivot or a lock that no longer holds safely is not a polishing problem; discontinue use and seek model-specific service guidance.
For light surface marks
- Clean and dry the tool first so abrasive work does not spread salty or gritty contamination.
- Rub the affected area with a polishing cloth or a non-metallic abrasive such as a Scotchbrite pad. A soft-bristle brush can work around serrations and recesses.
- Use light pressure and follow the existing surface direction. Stop frequently to inspect the finish.
- Wipe away residue, dry again and apply a thin protective film of appropriate oil.
Leatherman’s FAQs suggest using CRC 3-36 or a similar oil to rub a black-oxide surface and set the finish. That can refresh the appearance of a worn finish; it does not recreate missing coating or repair pits.

When to stop
Stop if the mark deepens into a pit, the steel changes shape, a blade edge is affected, or a lock or spring is involved. Avoid aggressive sanding, wire wheels and metal picks that can remove material or round a locking interface. Rust removal is not a reason to disassemble a tool unless the manual specifically supports that procedure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to care for plain-edge and serrated blades
Cleaning and sharpening are separate tasks. Remove residue from a blade before sharpening, and keep lubricant away from the cutting edge during normal storage.
Plain-edge sections
Leatherman’s published standard is 32 degrees inclusive, or 16 degrees per side, for plain-edge blade sections. Use a guided or freehand system that can maintain that geometry, make light passes, and remove the same amount of material from both sides. A burr should be removed rather than repeatedly increasing pressure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSerrated sections
Serrated sections use a 20-degree one-sided bevel. Sharpen only the edged side with a serration-compatible rod or system sized for the individual scallops. The flat side is not the sharpening side; working it aggressively wears away the serrations. Clean the gullets with a brush or swab after sharpening and remove abrasive dust before lubrication.

Should you disassemble a Leatherman?
Routine cleaning does not require full disassembly. External brushing, appropriate rinsing, drying and careful lubrication reach the areas most likely to collect contamination. Disassembly can change pivot tension, expose small washers or springs, damage thread-locking compounds and complicate reassembly. If a model manual provides a disassembly procedure, follow it exactly; otherwise, contact the appropriate service channel instead of improvising with heat, impact or unapproved solvents.
A practical inspection checklist
Use the following checks whenever the tool has been exposed to salt, mud, chemicals, food residue or prolonged moisture:
- All visible grit and residue has been removed from pivots, locks and channels.
- No water remains in a recess, under an accessory or between handle layers.
- Pivot movement is smooth without binding, scraping or side play that was not present before.
- Every lock engages completely and releases through its intended control.
- Blades have no new chips, deep pits or unsafe edge damage.
- Lubricant is present only as a thin film, with no drip or pooled residue.
- The sheath, pocket clip and storage area are dry and clean.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Pivot still feels gritty after oil | Embedded sand or dried residue | Stop adding oil; reopen accessible implements, brush and rinse as appropriate, dry fully and then relubricate. |
| Joint is stiff after washing | Trapped water, detergent film or insufficient movement while drying | Rinse away soap, dry the pivot while moving the implement, then use a small amount of suitable lubricant. |
| Orange spots return quickly | Salt or moisture remains in a crevice, or corrosion has pitted the steel | Repeat fresh-water rinsing and drying; polish only light surface marks. Escalate pitting or structural damage for service. |
| Black finish looks uneven | Normal wear of a black-oxide conversion coating | Clean gently and use the oil-rub approach described in Leatherman’s FAQ; do not expect polishing to restore removed coating. |
| Lock does not fully engage | Debris, damaged lock parts or incorrect reassembly | Do not rely on the tool for cutting or force work. Clean accessible areas and consult the model manual or service channel. |
| Serrations become less distinct after sharpening | Sharpening the flat side or using an incompatible abrasive | Stop and preserve the remaining geometry; use a serration-compatible system on the edged side only. |
Warranty and service limits
The current US Leatherman warranty describes a 25-year limited warranty for qualifying tools, but it excludes rust, oxidation and corrosion. Routine maintenance and sharpening are not warranty service. Warranty terms and routing differ by country, so readers outside the United States should use their local Leatherman distributor or regional policy.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Some MagnaCut blade owners may qualify for a separate free sharpening service under published terms. Confirm the current eligibility rules and geography before relying on that service; it does not change the need to clean, dry and lubricate the tool yourself.
Reliable habits for long-term care
Use the least aggressive cleaner that removes the actual residue, keep solvents away from unverified plastics, and never leave saltwater or detergent trapped in a pivot. Brush before washing, rinse when salt or soap is present, dry by inspection rather than by an invented timer, lubricate the correct surfaces with the correct type of product, and test every lock before the tool goes back into service. The exact manual for your model remains the authority for disassembly, unusual materials and service procedures.
