The safest way to clean a coffee machine is to follow its current owner’s manual and any on-machine cleaning or descaling prompt. Cleaning and descaling are different jobs: cleaning removes coffee oils and residue, while descaling removes mineral scale. Use only the product, amount, program and filter instructions specified for your exact make and model.
The procedure below gives you a model-safe framework for drip brewers, countertop espresso machines and automatic coffee machines without pretending that one schedule or button sequence fits every appliance.
Start with the exact machine, not a generic recipe
Before adding water, tablets or descaler, identify the machine’s manufacturer, model number and series. The model number is usually on a rating label, the original packaging or the settings menu. Download or open the current owner’s manual from the manufacturer and look for sections labelled cleaning, descaling, care or maintenance.

Check the display for a cleaning or descaling alert. A prompt is part of the appliance’s maintenance system, not a suggestion that can be replaced with a universal calendar. Bosch’s countertop instructions differ among its 300, 500 and 800 series, and Bosch directs drip-machine owners to the manual for descaling. A model-specific De’Longhi support FAQ even phrases the question by model number: “How do I descale my DCF6212TTC or DCF6214T drip Coffee Maker?”

- Record the make, full model number and series.
- Read the cleaning and descaling sections before starting either cycle.
- Note whether the machine asks you to remove a water filter.
- Check the approved tablet, liquid or powder form and the required quantity.
- Confirm where the product goes: brew chamber, tablet hatch, water tank or another location.
- Have the required container available for expelled water and rinse water.
If the manual and the on-screen prompt disagree, stop and contact the manufacturer or use the latest manual for that exact model. Do not infer a procedure from a similar-looking machine.
Cleaning and descaling solve different problems
| Task | What it removes | What to use | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Routine cleaning | Coffee oils, grounds and greasy residue inside the brewing path and removable waste areas | The machine’s approved cleaning tablet or cleaning procedure | It is not a substitute for descaling |
| Descaling | Mineral scale deposited by water inside the water circuit | The approved descaling tablet or descaler and the machine’s descaling program | A descaler is not automatically a coffee-oil cleaner |
| Exterior care | Splashes, fingerprints and surface dirt | A soft cloth and, for stainless steel, mild soapy water | Exterior cleaning does not clean water or coffee pathways |
Bosch explains that greasy coffee residue can affect beverage taste. Its 00312530 descaling-tablet product explicitly states that it has no cleaning properties. Therefore, running a descaling cycle does not mean the machine’s coffee oils have been removed, and running a cleaning cycle does not mean mineral scale has been removed.
Use the machine’s cleaning program when it provides one
Many countertop espresso and automatic machines display a guided cleaning routine. Treat the following as a preparation checklist rather than universal button-by-button instructions.
- Prepare the machine. Empty the grounds container, drip tray and any other removable waste container named by the manual. Place a container under the outlets if the instructions require one.
- Prepare the approved product. Use the tablet or other product listed for your model. Do not substitute a product merely because its packaging says it is suitable for coffee machines in general.
- Follow the displayed menu path. Select the cleaning program exactly as shown on the display or in the manual. Different series can put the command under different maintenance menus.
- Load the product as directed. Some machines use a tablet hatch; others specify a different location. Use the stated quantity rather than guessing.
- Complete every rinse. Keep the required container in place and allow the program to finish. Interrupting it can leave cleaning solution in the circuit.
- Empty and rinse. When prompted, empty the collection container and waste areas. Refill the water tank if the program requests fresh water, then run the specified rinse.
- Return removed parts. Reinstall the water filter or other component only when the manual says to do so, and verify that it is seated correctly.
Bosch’s 300, 500 and 800 series instructions illustrate why a generic sequence is unsafe: the tablet location, filter handling, number of collection steps and rinse/refill actions can differ. Use the checklist to avoid forgetting a step, but let the machine’s instructions control the actual sequence.
Descale only with the approved method
Descaling removes mineral deposits from the water circuit. Start a descaling cycle when the machine prompts you or when the manual specifies it. Do not create a weekly, monthly or quarterly interval for every machine; water hardness, model design and the manufacturer’s programming differ.
- Read the complete descaling procedure first. Check the required product type, water volume, temperature precautions and estimated cycle stages.
- Remove the filter if instructed. Bosch’s example requires filter removal where applicable. A filter left in place can change the solution concentration or interfere with the program.
- Prepare the solution exactly. Use the approved tablet or descaler and the stated amount of water. Do not improvise with vinegar or another substitute unless the manual explicitly permits it.
- Start the model’s descaling command. Select the maintenance prompt or menu item named in the manual and follow each screen.
- Manage collection and refill steps. Empty the container when prompted, refill with fresh water when directed and keep the machine running until the rinse phase ends.
- Reinstall the filter at the specified point. Some models require it after the cycle rather than before it; follow the timing in your manual.
- Clean solution residue from removable parts. Miele’s coffee-machine guidance specifically tells users to clean the water container and drip tray after descaling so residue is removed.
A descaling product’s label cannot override the appliance manual. Bosch’s descaler page distinguishes descaling from cleaning, while Miele describes a machine-guided process. These instructions support the same principle: use the product approved for the appliance and complete the entire guided rinse.

Drip coffee makers need model-specific care too
Drip machines often have fewer menus than automatic espresso machines, but that does not make a universal recipe safe. Bosch directs owners to the manual for drip-machine descaling, and manufacturer support pages may publish separate instructions for individual models.

- Turn the machine off, unplug it if the manual calls for that precaution and let hot components cool.
- Empty the filter basket, carafe and any grounds or water reservoirs that the manual identifies as removable.
- Wash only the parts marked as washable, using the method and detergent specified by the manufacturer.
- Wipe coffee splashes from the housing without allowing liquid into controls, vents or electrical openings.
- Reassemble the parts before the next brew and confirm that the basket and carafe are positioned correctly.
Drip-machine descaling
Use the model’s descaling instructions and approved product. If the machine has a dedicated descaling light or program, use it rather than timing a homemade cycle. The fact that one drip model accepts a particular tablet or solution does not establish compatibility with another make or model.
Clean removable parts conservatively
Removable parts contact coffee, water or, on some machines, milk. Their materials and allowable cleaning methods vary. The manual should decide whether a part may go in a dishwasher, whether it must be hand-washed and whether a lubricant or special brush is permitted.
- Remove only the parts the manual identifies as user-removable.
- Rinse away coffee grounds and solution residue before reinstalling a part.
- Check seals, lids and connectors for correct seating; do not force a component that does not align.
- Do not immerse the appliance body, control panel, power cord or plug.
- For milk-contact components, use the machine’s named cleaning routine and product rather than treating them as ordinary coffee parts.
If a part’s cleaning method is not stated, leave it installed and consult the manufacturer instead of experimenting.
Clean stainless-steel exteriors without damaging them
Bosch recommends a soft cloth and mild soapy water for stainless-steel surfaces. Wipe in the direction of the grain, then dry with a soft cloth to reduce streaks and water marks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Use a clean, soft cloth rather than a scouring pad.
- Apply mild soapy water to the cloth, not directly into seams or controls.
- Wipe with the grain of the stainless steel.
- Dry the surface after cleaning.
- Do not use chlorine-based cleaners or abrasive products on the stainless-steel surface.
For painted plastic, coated panels, displays and other finishes, use the method in the appliance manual; stainless-steel guidance should not automatically be applied to every surface.

Choose products by purpose and compatibility
| Product category | Use it for | Before buying or using |
|---|---|---|
| Cleaning tablets | Interior coffee-oil and residue cleaning in machines that specify tablets | Confirm the exact make and model. Bosch identifies compatible cleaning tablets for its own machines; that does not prove compatibility with another brand. |
| Descaling tablets or approved descaler | Mineral-scale removal during the machine’s descaling program | Check the required form, dose and cycle. Bosch’s listed descaler is not a coffee-residue cleaner. |
| Water filter | Only the filtration role defined by the machine’s manual | Follow instructions about removing it during a cycle and reinstalling or replacing it afterward. |
| Household substitutes | Only when the exact manual explicitly allows them | Do not assume vinegar, citric acid or another substitute is safe for your seals, sensors or warranty. |
Keep cleaning and descaling products separate so you do not mistake one for the other. Store them in their original packaging and follow the label’s handling instructions.
Compare a product by four practical questions
When two tablets or descalers appear similar, compare them against the machine rather than against marketing claims. First, is the product approved for the exact make, model and series? Second, is it intended to dissolve coffee residue or mineral scale? Third, does the machine require a tablet, liquid or another form, and where must it be loaded? Fourth, does the procedure require a filter to be removed, a particular water volume or one or more dedicated rinses? A product that fails any of these checks is not an appropriate substitute simply because it costs less or fits another appliance.
Keep the package until the cycle is complete. The label can confirm the product name and handling directions if an alert returns or you need to contact support. Never combine cleaning and descaling chemicals in the tank or run both programs as one improvised cycle.
Before, during and after a maintenance cycle
A short preparation routine prevents many interruptions. Clear enough counter space for the collection container, identify a supply of fresh water and remove cups or accessories that could block an outlet. Read all displayed steps before pressing Start, because some programs pause for a refill or an empty container. Stay nearby during the cycle so you can respond to those prompts rather than leaving solution in the machine longer than the program requires.
Afterward, inspect the water tank, drip tray, grounds container and outlet area for residue. Rinse only the parts the manual names, dry them as directed and reinstall them firmly. If a filter was removed, confirm whether it should be reinstalled immediately or only after the final rinse. A completed display message is not a reason to skip these final checks, particularly when Miele or another manufacturer specifically calls for cleaning the water container and drip tray after descaling.
What to do when a cycle fails or an alert remains
The machine stops during cleaning or descaling
Do not repeatedly press buttons at random. Check the display and manual for the stated recovery step. Many guided programs require an empty container, a refilled tank, a closed service door or a correctly installed drip tray before they continue.

The alert returns after the cycle
Verify that the entire program, including its final rinse, completed. Check whether the model required filter removal or a second rinse. If the alert remains after the manual’s documented recovery procedure, contact the manufacturer rather than running stronger chemicals or an unapproved cycle.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The drink tastes oily or stale
That symptom points you back to the cleaning procedure, because Bosch notes that greasy residue can affect taste. Run the model’s approved cleaning cycle if it is due or prompted. Do not assume that a recent descaling cycle removed coffee oils.
The machine leaks after maintenance
Stop using it, switch it off and inspect only the user-removable parts named in the manual. Check that the water tank, drip tray, brew unit, seals and filter are seated as instructed. If the leak continues or involves an internal connection, seek manufacturer service.
There is white or chalky residue
Follow the model’s descaling procedure; do not scrub internal water paths or increase the product concentration. Complete every rinse and clean the water container and drip tray when the instructions require it.

Recommended Free Tools
- What is the machine? Confirm make, model and series.
- What problem are you addressing? Coffee residue calls for cleaning; mineral deposits call for descaling.
- What does the machine request? Check the display, indicator lights and current manual.
- Which product is approved? Verify compatibility and quantity for that model.
- Does the filter stay in? Remove or reinstall it only at the point specified.
- What must be rinsed? Complete the full program and clean any container or tray named after the cycle.
- Are you cleaning the exterior? Use the finish-appropriate cloth and cleaner, avoiding chlorine and abrasives on stainless steel.
Keep a simple record of the date, program and product used if more than one person operates the machine. The record is useful for confirming what happened when a prompt reappears, but it should not replace the appliance’s own maintenance instructions.

When to stop and get manufacturer help
Contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider when the manual does not cover your symptom, the machine cannot complete a required cycle, a warning persists after the documented rinse, an internal leak appears, or a component is damaged. Include the exact model number, the displayed message, the program selected and the product used. Do not dismantle the appliance or bypass a safety interlock simply to force a cycle.
Manufacturer instructions and product listings can change. Before the next cleaning or descaling job, verify that you are using the current manual and a compatible consumable for your exact machine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use one product for both cleaning and descaling?
Not unless the exact manual says so. Cleaning tablets target coffee oils and residue, while descalers target mineral scale; Bosch’s descaling tablets are explicitly not cleaners.

Use the machine’s alert or the interval in its current manual. A universal weekly, monthly or quarterly schedule is not supported for every drip, espresso or automatic machine.
Should I remove the water filter before descaling?
Only when the manual instructs you to. Bosch procedures require filter removal on applicable models and specify when to reinstall it.
Is vinegar a safe substitute for descaler?
Do not assume it is safe. Use vinegar, citric acid or another substitute only if the exact manufacturer manual explicitly permits it.
What should I do after descaling?
Complete every programmed rinse, refill with fresh water when prompted, and clean the water container and drip tray if the instructions require it. Reinstall the filter at the specified stage.

Why does my coffee still taste oily after descaling?
Descaling removes mineral scale, not necessarily coffee oils. Run the machine’s approved cleaning cycle when its manual or prompt calls for it.
The Bottom Line
Identify the exact machine, separate cleaning from descaling, use only compatible products and follow every prompted rinse and filter instruction. For surfaces, use the finish-appropriate method—soft cloth and mild soapy water for stainless steel, with no chlorine or abrasives. When the manual does not resolve a warning, leak or failed cycle, stop and contact the manufacturer.
