The safest way to clean an electric coffee grinder is to empty it, unplug it, remove only the parts its manual identifies as user-removable, brush dry grounds from the burrs and outlet, and wash only approved removable containers. Cleaning tablets can remove routine oil and particle residue when the manufacturer permits them, but they are not a remedy for a clog. Because burr coatings, access mechanisms, washable parts, tablet doses, and reassembly procedures vary, your grinder’s manual overrides any general checklist.
Before you open the grinder: safety and compatibility
Disconnect power before your hands or a brush enter the burr chamber. Breville’s BCG820 instructions begin with emptying the beans and unplugging the machine before cleaning. Baratza’s Sette 270 guidance likewise starts with removing beans and running the grinder empty as directed. A grinder can start unexpectedly if it remains connected, and loose beans can spill into the mechanism while you work.
- Identify the exact model. Keep the model number and manual available. Instructions for a Breville BCG820, Baratza Sette 270, or Fellow Ode are not interchangeable.
- Empty the hopper. Follow the manual’s instruction for dispensing or running out beans. Do not force a jammed adjustment ring or burr carrier.
- Unplug before internal cleaning. Brushing the burrs, chute, or chamber counts as internal cleaning.
- Remove only authorized parts. If a hopper, upper burr, carrier, or chute is not described as user-removable, leave it in place and contact the manufacturer for the approved procedure.
- Keep burrs dry unless the manual explicitly says otherwise. Moisture can cause corrosion. Baratza specifically warns that the Sette 270 burrs must not be washed.
What you need
Most routine cleaning requires a few simple items rather than a complete disassembly:

- Manufacturer-approved coffee-grinder cleaning tablets, only when the manual allows them and specifies how to use them.
- A small container for beans removed from the hopper and a separate container for coffee that must be discarded after tablet cleaning.
Do not substitute a metal pick, abrasive pad, steel wool, solvent, or household vacuum attachment unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it. Breville’s BCG820 manual cautions against abrasive cleaners and steel wool and says not to place its grinder parts or accessories in a dishwasher.

General dry-cleaning procedure
The following sequence is a safe framework for many electric burr grinders. Treat every step that involves access, removal, or settings as conditional on your model’s manual.
- Turn the grinder off and empty the hopper. Store the beans in an airtight container. If the manual tells you to run the grinder briefly to clear the feed path, do that before unplugging; otherwise do not run an empty grinder simply to imitate another model’s procedure.
- Unplug the power cord. Place the grinder on a stable, well-lit surface so dropped screws, carriers, or adjustment parts are easy to find.
- Remove the hopper and upper burr only if instructed. Some designs use a twist-lock hopper or a keyed burr carrier. Photograph the setting and orientation before removal if your manual does not provide a clear diagram; do not pry a part that does not release normally.
- Brush loose grounds from the upper burr. Use a dry, stiff-bristled brush. Work from the burr teeth and surrounding ledges toward the opening so particles fall out instead of deeper into the mechanism.
- Brush the lower burr and burr chamber. Reach only the areas exposed by the approved access method. Keep the brush dry and avoid bending springs, touching calibration marks, or applying side pressure to the burrs.
- Clean the grind outlet and chute. Brush compacted grounds from the outlet. A blockage in this narrow passage can make a clean burr set appear to be malfunctioning, but do not push debris deeper with a sharp object.
- Clean the exterior and controls. Wipe the housing with a barely damp cloth, keeping liquid away from the motor, electronics, vents, and power connection. Dry the surface immediately.
- Reinstall parts exactly as specified. On the Breville BCG820, the documented sequence includes replacing and locking the upper burr and hopper. Confirm that locking tabs, arrows, and adjustment collars are seated before adding beans.
What can be washed, and what must stay dry?
Washability is a model-specific property, not a general feature of coffee grinders. The Breville BCG820 manual permits warm, soapy washing of the grounds container and lid, hopper, and hopper lid; those parts must be rinsed and thoroughly dried. It also says not to use a dishwasher. Baratza’s Sette 270 instructions separately permit hand-washing the hopper, hopper lid, and grounds bin while prohibiting washing the burrs.
| Component | Typical treatment in the cited manuals | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Upper and lower burrs | Dry brushing | Baratza says Sette 270 burrs can rust if washed; follow your own manual. |
| Burr chamber and grind outlet | Dry brushing of accessible grounds | Do not flood the chamber or insert tools the manual does not authorize. |
| Hopper and hopper lid | Hand-wash in warm soapy water on the cited models | Dry completely before reassembly; Breville BCG820 parts are not dishwasher-safe. |
| Grounds container and lid | Warm soapy water on Breville BCG820; hand-wash on Sette 270 | Rinse away soap and remove all moisture before use. |
| Motor housing and controls | Dry or barely damp exterior wipe | Keep liquid out of vents, electronics, and the drive area. |
Cleaning tablets: when and how to use them
Tablets are a periodic residue-cleaning option, not a replacement for brushing and not a universal product recommendation. Baratza describes tablets as a way to dislodge coffee particles and absorb or remove coffee-oil residue. Fellow gives similar tablet guidance for the Ode. Use them only when the exact grinder manual permits the product, dose, grind setting, and purge procedure.

What tablets can do
- Remove loose particles and oily residue from passages that are difficult to reach with a brush.
- Provide a repeatable maintenance step between manual cleanings when the manufacturer documents it.
- Reduce the amount of residue carried into the next grind, provided the post-cleaning purge is completed.
What tablets cannot do
Baratza’s Sette 270 manual states: “Note that tablets will not clear a clogged grinder.” A solid obstruction, a packed chute, a foreign object, or a mechanical fault requires the model’s unclogging or service procedure. Running more tablets through a blocked grinder can waste product and put additional load on the drive.
Documented tablet sequence for the Sette 270
The Sette 270 manual (v2.1, August 27, 2019) directs users to empty the beans, run the grinder empty as instructed, process the recommended tablet amount, and then grind approximately 30 g of coffee. Discard both the tablet grounds and the follow-up coffee. This is a Sette-specific procedure; do not assume its dose, setting, or purge quantity applies to another grinder.
Fellow Ode guidance
Fellow’s Ode support guidance recommends cleaning burrs at least every three months for daily use with tablets or by brushing the burr chamber, and it likewise recommends grinding approximately 30 g of coffee after tablet cleaning. The guidance is for the Ode, not a universal schedule or dose for all grinders.

Brushing versus tablets
Neither method has been established as universally superior. The available instructions are manufacturer procedures for particular machines rather than a controlled comparison. Choose based on the target and the access your manual provides.
Recommended Free Tools
| Question | Dry brushing | Cleaning tablets |
|---|---|---|
| Primary target | Loose grounds on accessible burrs, chamber surfaces, and the outlet | Routine particles and coffee-oil residue in approved pathways |
| Model approval | Use the brush type and access method allowed by the manual | Required; dose and settings can differ by model |
| Disassembly | May require hopper or burr removal, as on the BCG820 sequence | Usually follows the manual’s operating procedure, but may still require preparation and a purge |
| Clogged grinder | Can help remove an accessible obstruction after power is disconnected | Not a clog-clearing method for the Sette 270 |
| Aftercare | Inspect that no bristles or grounds remain | Manufacturers cited here direct users to grind and discard about 30 g afterward |
How often should a grinder be cleaned?
There is no evidence in the cited material for one schedule that fits every grinder, roast, dose, or environment. Use the manufacturer’s interval and adjust for actual use, while keeping the model qualification attached to any number.
- Baratza Sette 270: its manual says that with daily use, the burrs should be cleaned every few months with a stiff brush or tablets.
- Fellow Ode: Fellow’s guidance says daily-used Ode burrs should be cleaned at least every three months with tablets or by brushing the burr chamber.
- Other models: use the interval in the owner’s manual. If none is stated, inspect the burr chamber and outlet regularly and clean when grounds accumulate, output becomes inconsistent, or the manufacturer’s support guidance calls for service.
A practical routine is to empty and wipe the grounds bin frequently, inspect the outlet during normal use, and perform the deeper burr-area cleaning at the documented interval. Heavy daily use, oily beans, frequent fine grinding, and a humid storage location can make inspection necessary sooner, but they do not create a universal calendar interval.

Clogged, slow, or uneven output: troubleshoot safely
First, distinguish residue from a true clog
Residual grounds usually brush away from the outlet or chamber. A clog presents as little or no coffee dispensing, a visibly packed chute, a sudden change after a bean fragment enters the feed path, or a motor that runs without normal output. Tablets are not the answer to this condition on the Sette 270, and the same caution is sensible for any grinder whose manual separates cleaning from unclogging.
Use the model’s unclogging procedure
- Stop the grinder and unplug it.
- Remove beans and any user-removable parts named in the manual.
- Brush or clear only the areas the manual identifies. Do not insert knives, screwdrivers, or improvised wire.
- Check that the burr carrier, hopper lock, and adjustment ring are seated correctly before testing.
- Reassemble and test with a small amount of coffee if the manual allows.
- If the blockage remains, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service channel instead of disassembling the motor or wiring.
When a clog may indicate a parts problem
Repeated blockages, a burr that will not turn freely when the grinder is unplugged, damaged teeth, missing fasteners, or a persistent change after correct cleaning can indicate a worn or damaged component. Baratza support pages provide model-specific troubleshooting and parts information. If you need replacement parts, verify the exact grinder model and compatibility before ordering; a visually similar burr or carrier may not fit or calibrate correctly.
Common mistakes that damage grinders
- Using rice as a cleaner. Breville’s overview warns that rice can damage a burr grinder and recommends following the manufacturer’s instructions instead.
- Washing the burrs. Baratza warns that Sette 270 burrs can rust. Water also risks residue and corrosion in other designs unless the manual explicitly approves washing.
- Putting parts in a dishwasher. The Breville BCG820 manual says not to do this; heat, detergent, and water exposure can damage finishes or fit.
- Cleaning while plugged in. Unplug before brushing or opening internal areas.
- Forcing a locked burr or hopper. Locking tabs and calibration mechanisms are model-specific. Consult the diagram rather than applying more force.
- Returning damp parts to the grinder. Moisture can clump grounds and expose internal components to corrosion.
- Assuming tablets dissolve a blockage. A clog needs the documented unclogging procedure, not additional tablets.
- Skipping the purge after tablets. Follow the manufacturer’s discard instruction so tablet fragments and loosened residue are not brewed.
Reassembly and a post-cleaning check
Before adding a full hopper of beans, verify that every washed part is completely dry, the upper burr is seated in its intended orientation, and the hopper lock or alignment marks match the manual. Confirm that the grounds bin is fully inserted and that the outlet is unobstructed. If your model uses a grind-size collar, return it to the recorded setting only after the burr assembly is locked.

Run the manufacturer-approved test cycle. After tablet cleaning, use the specified purge amount and discard it; Baratza and Fellow both cite approximately 30 g for their documented procedures. For ordinary brushing, inspect the first small dose for stray bristles, visible debris, or abnormal sound before resuming normal grinding.
When cleaning is not enough
Cleaning cannot correct every symptom. Seek model-specific support when the grinder still stalls after the documented unclogging procedure, produces a persistent grinding noise, shows a cracked burr or carrier, loses its lock position, or has electrical symptoms such as a burning odor or intermittent power. Do not open the motor housing unless the manufacturer’s service instructions explicitly authorize it. A replacement burr, carrier, hopper, or other component must match the exact model and revision; use the manufacturer’s parts documentation or support channel to confirm compatibility.
Quick Recap
A concise maintenance checklist
- Find the exact model manual before removing anything.
- Empty beans and unplug before internal cleaning.
- Brush burrs, the chamber, and outlet dry with an approved stiff brush.
- Wash only the hopper, lid, grounds bin, or other parts the manual lists; rinse and dry fully.
- Never use rice or abrasive cleaners unless the manufacturer explicitly instructs otherwise.
- Use tablets only at the documented dose and setting, and discard the required post-tablet purge.
- Treat a clog with the model’s unclogging procedure; tablets do not clear a Sette 270 clog.
- Record the burr setting before disassembly and verify locks and alignment during reassembly.
- Escalate persistent jams, damaged parts, or electrical symptoms to manufacturer support.
