If a print will not stick, first identify the exact build plate and follow its manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. A compatible plate can often be quick-cleaned with the specified concentration of isopropyl alcohol (IPA), but water and solvents are not safe choices for every surface. If cleaning does not help, check material-to-surface compatibility and first-layer setup rather than escalating to harsher chemicals or harder scrubbing.
Why a clean plate matters—and why cleaning is not the whole answer
Oils, grease, fingerprints, and leftover adhesive can interfere with a print bonding to the build surface. Keeping the print area clean is a sensible first check when a model comes loose or its first layer fails to stick. But a clean plate is not automatically a better plate for every filament: some materials can bond too strongly to certain surfaces.
There is no single cleaner or universal cleaning interval established for all 3D printer plates. The correct approach depends on the plate material, coating, printer model, and residue you are trying to remove. Manufacturer instructions differ even between flexible plates and glass plates from the same company. Identify your exact plate before cleaning, and do not transfer a procedure from another printer just because its surface looks similar.

A quick wipe may be appropriate when fingerprints or grease are the likely issue; a compatible deeper wash can help when oils or adhesive remain. Identify the plate before choosing a cleaner
Check the printer or plate manual for the surface type and its cleaning instructions. The manufacturer guidance below illustrates why that step matters:
| Surface and manufacturer guidance | Routine cleaning | When routine cleaning is not enough | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prusa smooth, satin, and textured sheets | Prusa recommends 90% IPA. | If adhesion declines despite IPA, Prusa recommends an occasional wash with a few drops of dish soap and warm water, followed by thorough drying. | Do not use hot water or wash this way often. Prusa’s occasional acetone guidance for a particular smooth sheet should not be treated as a rule for every PEI surface. |
| UltiMaker S8 flexible build plate | After the plate cools, use a microfiber cloth and IPA greater than 95%. | The S8 manual does not recommend water as a cleaning method. | Do not use acetone, petrol, or thinner; the manual warns these can permanently damage the plate. Keep both sides free of oils, grease, and unsuitable cleaning agents. |
| UltiMaker Factor 4 flexible build plate | Let the plate cool completely, then use a microfiber cloth and IPA greater than 95%. Wipe in long strokes in one direction. | Not stated in the cited Factor 4 guidance; consult the exact plate instructions for other cleaning methods. | UltiMaker warns that paper towels may leave fibers. |
| UltiMaker S3 glass plate | Remove the plate and wash it with lukewarm water and a non-abrasive sponge to remove adhesive. | Air-dry it or use a microfiber cloth or lint-free towel. | Dry it completely before reinstalling. The manual says a thin layer of glue improves adhesion for most materials; that is S3-specific guidance, not a rule for all glass beds. |
These are model-specific examples, not interchangeable recipes. In particular, do not assume that every PEI sheet can tolerate every solvent. If the plate manual is unavailable or unclear, avoid an unapproved chemical until you can confirm compatibility.
When checking the instructions, look for the exact plate name or model and the permitted cleaner, concentration, cloth, and drying requirements. A generic label such as “flexible plate,” “steel sheet,” or “glass bed” is not enough to establish that two surfaces share the same coating or chemical limits. If you have a removable plate, make sure you are consulting instructions for that plate rather than relying solely on advice for the printer frame or another model.

Choose the cleaning method for the problem
Different supplies address different needs, so there is no universal “best” build-plate cleaner. Use the surface compatibility and the type of contamination as your guide:
- Routine fingerprints or grease on a compatible surface: use the plate maker’s specified IPA concentration and cloth. Prusa specifies 90% IPA for its smooth, satin, and textured sheets. UltiMaker specifies greater than 95% IPA for the S8 and Factor 4 flexible plates.
- Adhesion declining despite IPA on a compatible Prusa sheet: Prusa recommends an occasional wash using a few drops of dish soap and warm water. The guidance notes that soap can address oils and sugars that IPA does not remove. It is not intended as a frequent routine, and the sheet needs to be dried well.
- Adhesive residue on the UltiMaker S3 glass plate: the S3 manual describes lukewarm water and a non-abrasive sponge, followed by complete drying. Do not assume this water-based method applies to a flexible plate or another glass bed.
- A material that grips a clean surface too strongly: cleaning is not the solution. For certain materials on smooth PEI, Prusa recommends a compatible separating agent such as a glue stick to help protect the sheet.
This comparison is useful because a quick IPA wipe, an occasional soap-and-water wash, and a glue separating layer are not competing versions of the same treatment. The first is a quick clean on a compatible surface, the second is a deeper wash for a compatible sheet when IPA is not enough, and the third is an optional layer for a particular adhesion risk. Choosing among them should depend on the exact surface and filament, not on which product sounds strongest.
Quick-clean a compatible plate with IPA
IPA is a quick-clean option for compatible surfaces. Use the concentration and cloth specified for your plate: Prusa specifies 90% for its smooth, satin, and textured sheets, while UltiMaker specifies greater than 95% for the S8 and Factor 4 flexible plates. Those concentrations are not a general specification for every printer.
- Confirm the plate and cleaner. Check that the manufacturer allows IPA and follow its specified concentration. Do not substitute acetone, petrol, thinner, or another solvent based on general advice about a different sheet.
- Let the plate cool if required. UltiMaker’s S8 and Factor 4 instructions require the flexible plate to cool before cleaning. Follow your own model’s directions rather than cleaning a hot plate by default.
- Use the named cloth. Where the instructions specify microfiber, use microfiber. For UltiMaker’s Factor 4 plate, wipe in long strokes in one direction; its guidance warns that paper towels may leave fibers.
- Clean the printing area without re-contaminating it. Remove grease and fingerprints from the area used for printing. Avoid touching the cleaned surface with bare fingers afterward.
- Let it dry fully before printing. For plates that must be removed or washed, do not reinstall or print until they are completely dry. Follow any additional handling steps in the model’s manual.
Keep the plate’s reverse side clean too when the manufacturer calls for it. For example, the S8 manual says to keep both sides of its flexible plate free of oils, grease, and unsuitable cleaning agents.

Use the wipe to remove contamination, not to polish or abrade the coating. For the Factor 4, the specified one-direction, long-stroke technique is a practical way to follow the manufacturer’s instructions while avoiding repeated back-and-forth wiping. On other plates, use the method their manuals specify rather than assuming the same technique is required.
After cleaning, give the surface time to dry fully and handle it by its edges where practical so you do not put fresh fingerprints on the area you just cleaned. The goal is a clean, dry plate that is ready for the next print—not a wet surface or one coated with an unapproved cleaner.
When to use soap and water—or not
Prusa steel sheets: occasional warm-water wash
For Prusa’s smooth, satin, and textured sheets, Prusa recommends trying 90% IPA first. If adhesion has declined over time despite IPA, the manufacturer says a few drops of dish soap and warm—not hot—water can remove oils and sugars that IPA does not. This is an occasional deeper wash, not a routine step to repeat frequently. Dry the sheet well before putting it back into service.
Do not extend that procedure to an unrelated plate without checking its instructions. The same-looking surface may have a different coating or cleaning restriction.

They are specifically useful in the Prusa guidance for a compatible sheet when the quick IPA method is no longer restoring adhesion. Use only a few drops of dish soap, avoid hot water, and do not make repeated washing the routine if a quick clean is sufficient.
UltiMaker S3 glass: remove adhesive with a non-abrasive sponge
For the S3 glass plate, UltiMaker’s manual describes removing the plate, washing it with lukewarm water and a non-abrasive sponge to remove adhesive, then air-drying or drying it with microfiber or a lint-free towel. The plate must be completely dry before reinstallation. This is distinct from the S8 flexible-plate instructions, which do not recommend water.
Do not substitute an abrasive scouring pad for the specified non-abrasive sponge. Likewise, do not reinstall a glass plate while it is still damp: complete drying is part of the S3 procedure. If your own glass plate has a different coating or manual, follow that instead of borrowing the S3 method solely because both plates are glass.

Do not confuse cleaning with adding an adhesion layer
Cleaning removes contamination; a separating layer addresses a different problem. Prusa warns that a clean, degreased smooth PEI sheet can grip PETG, ABS, ASA, XT, and CPH too strongly. For those combinations, it recommends a separating agent such as a glue stick to help protect the sheet. Check the instructions for your filament and printer before applying one.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMore adhesive is not necessarily safer or more effective. Prusa cautions that an overly thick layer can leave marks, bumps, and other artifacts on a print. Apply only a compatible layer and avoid treating glue as a cleaner. UltiMaker’s S3 manual separately says a thin layer of glue improves adhesion for most materials on that model’s glass plate; do not generalize that recommendation to all glass plates.
A BCN3D Epsilon guide names Magigoo in its build-plate preparation discussion. That mention does not establish compatibility with other printers or surfaces. Use only an adhesive confirmed for your plate and filament.
Pay attention to whether you need more grip or less grip. If a model is coming loose on a compatible surface, cleaning may be an appropriate first check. If a material can bond too strongly to a clean smooth PEI sheet, adding more adhesion is the wrong direction; a manufacturer-approved separating layer may help protect the sheet. A glue stick used as a separator is not the same thing as an adhesive layer intended to improve grip on a different surface.
Keep any adhesive layer thin where the instructions call for one. An overly thick layer can transfer unevenness to the print as marks, bumps, or other artifacts. If you are uncertain whether a glue stick or a named product is suitable, verify compatibility with the printer, plate, and filament before applying it. A product mentioned in a guide for one machine does not establish that it is suitable for another.
If the first layer still will not stick
Once you have cleaned the plate using an approved method, continuing to scrub or trying stronger solvents can risk surface damage without addressing the cause. Use a deliberate check rather than assuming every adhesion failure is dirt:
- Verify the surface and filament combination. Check whether the plate is intended for the material, and whether the material can adhere too strongly to that surface.
- Check whether the problem is residue or a different setup issue. If the surface is clean and the same failure continues, cleaning alone may not solve it. Consult the printer’s first-layer and adhesion troubleshooting guidance.
- Use a separating layer only when appropriate. For combinations known to grip too strongly, follow the plate and material instructions for a compatible release or separating agent rather than trying to make the surface even more adhesive.
- Stop before risking the coating. Do not move on to an unapproved solvent, abrasive sponge, or repeated deep wash. Confirm the exact plate procedure first.
Manufacturer instructions do not establish one universal diagnostic sequence, nor do they show that cleaning fixes every first-layer failure. Treat cleanliness as one important check alongside surface compatibility and print setup.

To narrow down the next step, ask what changed and what kind of failure you are seeing. If the plate has fingerprints or grease, clean it with the approved quick-clean method. If adhesion has worsened despite an approved IPA clean, check whether the manufacturer allows a deeper wash for that specific plate. If the plate is already clean and the print still fails, move on to the printer’s first-layer troubleshooting guidance and verify the material-to-surface match instead of repeating the same cleaning step.
Also distinguish a model that will not stay attached from one that sticks so firmly it threatens the plate during removal. They call for different responses. A release or separating agent may be relevant when adhesion is excessive on a compatible combination; it is not a cure for a model that is failing to bond. The right next step depends on the plate and filament instructions, so do not treat every adhesion complaint as evidence that the surface needs to be made stickier.
IPA safety and practical supplies
For a compatible plate, the useful supplies are the specified IPA concentration and a microfiber or lint-free cloth. Mild dish soap is relevant only for an approved occasional wash; a non-abrasive sponge is specified for the UltiMaker S3 glass plate. A compatible glue stick or other bed adhesive is an optional separating layer for certain material-and-surface combinations, not a cleaning product.
IPA is highly flammable and hazardous. UltiMaker advises keeping it away from heat, sparks, and static discharge, working with good ventilation, and consulting the supplier’s safety data sheet. Follow the product label and keep cleaning away from ignition sources. Do not use a cleaning product merely because it is commonly used on another type of 3D printer plate.
For a simple maintenance kit, choose supplies only after you know what your plate allows: the specified IPA concentration, an appropriate cloth, and—if the plate instructions permit it—a small amount of mild dish soap for an occasional wash. Add a non-abrasive sponge only if your glass-plate instructions call for one. Keep adhesives separate from cleaning supplies in your thinking: they are optional surface treatments for specific adhesion needs, not universal cleaners.
Take IPA safety seriously while cleaning. Keep it away from heat, sparks, and static discharge, and use it with good ventilation. Consult the supplier’s safety data sheet and follow the product label. Do not clean near an ignition source, and do not assume a cleaner is safe merely because it is common in a workshop.

Why won’t my first layer stick?
A dirty surface, including fingerprints, grease, or residue, can undermine adhesion, so start by checking the plate and cleaning it with the approved method. If it is clean and the problem continues, verify that the plate is compatible with the filament and consult the printer’s first-layer troubleshooting guidance; cleaning does not fix every setup issue.

How do I clean a PEI build plate?
There is no single rule for every PEI plate. Prusa recommends 90% IPA for its smooth, satin, and textured sheets; if adhesion declines despite IPA, it recommends an occasional wash with a few drops of dish soap and warm—not hot—water, followed by thorough drying. Check the exact plate manual before using another method or solvent.
Is IPA or dish soap better for cleaning a build plate?
They serve different purposes and are not interchangeable across all plates. Use the specified IPA concentration for a compatible quick clean. For Prusa’s sheets, a few drops of dish soap and warm water are an occasional deeper wash when adhesion has declined despite IPA. Other plate manuals may restrict water or specify a different method.
Can I use acetone on a PEI sheet?
Do not assume it is safe for every PEI surface. Prusa discusses occasional acetone cleaning for a particular smooth sheet, but that does not make acetone a universal PEI cleaner. UltiMaker warns that acetone, petrol, and thinner can permanently damage its S8 flexible plate. Check the instructions for your exact plate before using any solvent.

How often should I clean my 3D printer build plate?
The manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish a universal numeric interval. Keep oils and grease off the print area, clean with the approved method when needed, and reserve deeper soap-and-water washing for surfaces and situations where the manufacturer recommends it rather than making it a frequent default.
Can I use water on a flexible build plate?
It depends on the exact plate. UltiMaker’s S8 flexible-plate manual does not recommend water and specifies greater than 95% IPA with a microfiber cloth after the plate cools. By contrast, Prusa recommends an occasional warm-water wash for its compatible sheets when IPA is no longer enough. Follow your own plate manual.
Should I put glue on the build plate to improve adhesion?
Not automatically. Prusa recommends a separating agent such as a glue stick for certain materials that can grip smooth PEI too strongly, while the UltiMaker S3 manual says a thin layer of glue improves adhesion for most materials on that specific glass plate. Use only a layer compatible with your plate and filament; an overly thick layer can leave marks and bumps.
What should I use to clean an UltiMaker S3 glass plate?
The S3 manual describes removing the plate, washing it with lukewarm water and a non-abrasive sponge to remove adhesive, then air-drying or drying with microfiber or a lint-free towel. It must be completely dry before reinstallation.

The Bottom Line
Identify the exact plate first, then use only its approved cleaner and method: for example, Prusa specifies 90% IPA for its sheets, UltiMaker specifies greater than 95% IPA for its S8 and Factor 4 flexible plates, and the S3 glass manual describes lukewarm water and a non-abrasive sponge. Dry the surface fully, avoid unapproved solvents, and remember that a clean plate is only one part of first-layer troubleshooting. For certain materials that grip smooth PEI too strongly, a compatible separating layer—not more cleaning—may be the safer choice.
