Free a stiff multitool joint by removing lint, grit, and sticky residue first, drying the tool completely, then applying a very small amount of lubricant to the pivot or other friction surface. Work the implement repeatedly to distribute the oil and wipe away every visible trace of excess.
The correct lubricant and washing method depend on the manufacturer and model. Leatherman and Victorinox publish different product-specific recommendations, so use the procedure below as a careful framework rather than a substitute for your tool’s own care instructions.
Why multitool joints become stiff
A multitool joint is a compact friction assembly. A blade, plier arm, screwdriver, or other implement rotates around a pivot while springs, liners, washers, or adjacent tools press against nearby surfaces. Fine pocket lint, abrasive grit, dried food, adhesive, and old sticky lubricant can increase resistance. Exposure to water—especially salt water—can also leave residue or start corrosion.
Stiffness does not automatically mean the pivot needs adjustment or disassembly. Routine care addresses the most common maintenance problem: contamination on surfaces that should move against one another. Cleaning before oiling matters because lubricant can otherwise trap grit against the joint and make the movement feel worse.
What you need before starting
- A clean, well-lit work area where a small part cannot disappear.
- A lint-free cloth or microfiber cloth for wiping and drying.
- A small brush or soft cleaning tool for loose lint and grit.
- Warm water and a mild detergent only when the tool’s care instructions permit water cleaning.
- A precision applicator or the narrow nozzle on the lubricant bottle, so you can place one small drop rather than flood the handle.
- The manufacturer’s care instructions for the exact model, especially if the tool contains plastic, electronic components, unusual coatings, or specialty inserts.
Handle exposed blades and awls as cutting tools while opening the implements. Keep fingers out of the path of a blade as you operate the joint. Do not begin by forcing a stuck implement through its full travel; first remove whatever is visibly obstructing it.
Inspect the joint and identify the source of resistance
Find the affected implement
Open the blade, plier arm, driver, or other implement that feels tight and observe where the resistance occurs. A pivot that is tight through the entire movement suggests contamination or a dry friction surface. A rough spot at one point in the rotation can indicate debris at a particular edge or possible damage. If only one tool is affected, concentrate cleaning on that pivot instead of washing the entire multitool unnecessarily.

Look for visible contamination
Use a light to check the gap around the pivot, between nested blades, and along the handle liners. Remove loose lint and grit with a brush or dry cloth. Sticky residue may appear glossy, dark, or stringy and can hold adjacent implements together. Do not scrape a coated surface with a sharp metal object; scratching creates another place for residue and corrosion to begin.
Separate stiffness from damage
Check whether the pivot hardware is visibly bent, cracked, or missing. Also note unusual looseness, a blade that does not stay aligned, or a spring that no longer returns an implement normally. Cleaning and lubrication are routine care; they are not a universal fix for structural damage. If the tool remains defective after proper cleaning, use the model’s official support or service channel rather than guessing at a repair.
Clean away lint, grit, and sticky residue
Start with dry removal
Brush or wipe away loose particles before introducing water or oil. Open the affected implement only as far as is safe, clean the accessible pivot surfaces, and remove debris from the space between nested implements. Turn the tool so loosened particles fall away instead of deeper into the handle.
Use water only when the model allows it
Manufacturer instructions differ, and water is not automatically appropriate for every multitool. Leatherman’s maintenance guidance permits a mild detergent-and-water solution for sticky substances between blades. Victorinox’s catalog care guidance says to move dirty or sticky blades in warm water until they move freely. Those directions apply to the respective product families; they should not be treated as a blanket instruction for every brand or construction.
When washing is permitted, use warm—not scalding—water and a small amount of mild detergent. Move the affected implement gently while the residue loosens. Do not use a dishwasher. Victorinox states explicitly: “Multi-tools should never be cleaned in a dishwasher.” A dishwasher combines heat, detergent, pressure, and a long wet cycle that can damage finishes or components and leaves the tool difficult to dry thoroughly.
Rinse after salt-water exposure
If the multitool has been exposed to salt water, Leatherman advises rinsing it in fresh water, drying it, and applying light oil. Fresh-water rinsing removes salt residue; simply allowing salt water to evaporate leaves concentrated salts at the joint. Treat this as a corrosion-prevention step, not as a reason to immerse a model whose own instructions prohibit water.

Avoid aggressive solvents on plastic components
Leatherman warns that acetone and brake cleaners may damage plastic components. Do not substitute a powerful solvent merely because residue is stubborn. If mild detergent and water do not remove the contamination, stop and check the model-specific guidance or contact the manufacturer.
Dry the multitool completely
Drying is a separate step, not an afterthought. Wipe the exterior and work a clean cloth into accessible gaps. Open the implements so trapped water can escape, then leave the tool open in a dry, ventilated place until no moisture remains. Victorinox instructs users to allow a washed tool to dry completely, and Leatherman includes cleaning and drying in its corrosion-prevention advice.
Do not apply oil over visible water. A film of oil on top of moisture can leave water trapped at the pivot, while oil placed on a wet surface may spread unpredictably onto handles or blades. If the tool was rinsed after salt-water exposure, be especially thorough before moving to lubrication.

Choose a lubricant that matches the manufacturer’s guidance
There is no single lubricant recommendation that applies to every multitool. The maker’s instructions are the controlling reference for materials, coatings, and intended use.

Cleaning oil is not necessarily finishing oil
The Leatherman guidance distinguishes a low-viscosity oil used to clean or displace moisture from a PTFE/Teflon-based lubricant intended for pivoting or wear areas. Do not assume that an oil useful for flushing contamination is the best long-term film for every moving surface. Follow the manufacturer’s separation of those jobs.
Consider the use environment
If the multitool is used around food, check whether the chosen lubricant is suitable for that context before applying it. The sources do not establish one universal food-contact rating for all multitool oils. Victorinox lists its Multi Tool Oil as meeting NSF H1 requirements, but that specification belongs to that product and does not automatically transfer to another lubricant.
Prefer controlled application
Applicator precision matters more than using a large quantity. A narrow nozzle or needle applicator lets you place a drop at the pivot and keep oil off the grip and blade surfaces. Excess oil attracts dust and can migrate into pockets, cases, or materials that should remain dry.

- Secure the work area. Put the multitool on a stable surface, keep cutting edges pointed away from your hands, and open only the implement you are servicing.
- Inspect the pivot. Identify lint, grit, sticky residue, discoloration, or visible damage. If the hardware is bent, cracked, or unusually loose, stop routine care and seek model-specific service guidance.
- Remove loose debris. Brush and wipe the joint before adding liquid. Work the implement gently so particles can leave the gap rather than being pushed farther inside.
- Clean sticky contamination using an approved method. If the model permits it, use mild detergent and water as described by Leatherman for sticky substances between blades, or warm-water movement as described by Victorinox for dirty or sticky blades. Do not use a dishwasher.
- Rinse appropriately. After salt-water exposure, Leatherman’s guidance calls for fresh-water rinsing before drying and oiling. For any other model, follow its own water restrictions.
- Dry every accessible surface. Wipe the tool, open the implements, and allow it to dry completely. Do not proceed while water remains at the pivot.
- Place one small drop of the approved lubricant. Target the pivot, joint, or other friction surface identified in the maker’s instructions. Victorinox specifies oil between blades and the casing or springs and at applicable combination-tool and Swiss Tool plier joints; Leatherman specifies PTFE/Teflon-based lubricant for pivoting or wear areas.
- Move the implement through its travel. Open and close it repeatedly, without forcing it, so the lubricant reaches the moving surfaces. Victorinox specifically recommends moving parts back and forth to distribute oil.
- Wipe off visible excess. Use a clean cloth around the joint, handle, and blade. The goal is a thin working film, not an oily exterior.
- Test the movement carefully. The implement should move more evenly without oil running onto the handle or cutting edge. If resistance remains, repeat inspection and cleaning once rather than adding more oil blindly.
Where to apply oil on common multitool assemblies
Blade pivots and nested implements
Place the drop where the blade rotates against the casing or spring area, not along the sharpened edge. For a stack of nested blades, work one implement at a time so you can see whether the stiffness belongs to one pivot or to friction between neighboring tools.

Combination-tool joints
Combination tools often have more than one moving interface. Victorinox’s current care guidance calls for a small drop on combination-tool joints as needed. Apply it to the actual moving junction, cycle the tool, and remove oil that reaches the gripping faces.
Plier joints
Victorinox specifically includes Swiss Tool plier joints among the places that may need Multi-Tool Oil. Keep the jaws clean after cycling them so lubricant does not contaminate surfaces intended to grip wire or small parts.
Springs and casing contact points
Victorinox’s care guidance identifies the area between blades and the casing or springs as a friction location. Use only enough oil to form a thin film. Flooding the cavity makes later cleaning harder and gives dust a larger wet surface to cling to.

How to judge the result
A successful cleaning and lubrication should make movement smoother across the normal range, with less scraping or sticking. It should not leave a visible pool of oil, an oily handle, or lubricant on a blade edge. Check the tool in the same orientation in which you noticed the original problem; a pivot can feel different when the implement’s weight loads it in another direction.

Do not interpret temporary smoothness from a large amount of oil as proof that the joint is repaired. Excess lubricant can mask contamination for a short time and then collect more debris. Wipe the tool clean and reassess movement after the lubricant has been distributed.
What to do when the joint is still stiff
Reinspect before escalating
Look again for residue at the pivot, between nested tools, and along the casing. Confirm that the tool is completely dry and that the lubricant reached the actual friction surface. A second careful cleaning is more appropriate than pouring on additional oil.
Check for corrosion or mechanical damage
Persistent roughness, visible rust, a bent implement, a cracked handle component, unusual looseness, or a spring that no longer functions normally points beyond routine lubrication. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish one universal repair threshold or a safe disassembly procedure for every model.

When cleaning and correct lubrication do not restore normal movement, consult the manufacturer’s support or service channel for the exact model. This is particularly important before removing pivot hardware, tightening screws, or opening a handle assembly: an adjustment that helps one design can damage another or affect blade alignment and safety.
Maintenance supplies and optional products
Purpose-made multitool oil
Victorinox lists Multi Tool Oil, item 4.3302, in a 10 ml package. The listing describes it as intended to lubricate and protect against corrosion and says it meets NSF H1 requirements. That makes it a direct fit for applicable Victorinox tools, but it is not evidence that every multitool requires that specific oil.
Broader maintenance kits
Leatherman’s Tool Maintenance Kit listing includes cleaning supplies, a cleaning mat, a microfiber cloth, lubrication oil, and a blade sharpener. A reader whose only problem is one stiff joint may need only an appropriate lubricant and a way to clean and dry the tool; a kit is an optional convenience rather than a requirement for this procedure.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Oiling before cleaning: this can bind grit to the pivot and make the joint abrasive.
- Applying too much lubricant: excess oil migrates onto handles and blades and attracts lint.
- Skipping the drying stage: trapped water, especially salty water, undermines corrosion prevention.
- Using a dishwasher: Victorinox expressly prohibits dishwasher cleaning for multi-tools.
- Using harsh solvents indiscriminately: Leatherman warns that acetone and brake cleaners can damage plastic components.
- Assuming one brand’s oil advice applies everywhere: Leatherman distinguishes low-viscosity cleaning oil from PTFE/Teflon pivot lubricant, while Victorinox specifies its Multi-Tool Oil for applicable moving joints.
- Forcing a stuck implement: force can bend an implement or damage the pivot before contamination has been removed.
- Disassembling without model-specific instructions: the available care guidance does not provide a universal disassembly or adjustment method.
A practical care decision tree
- Is the resistance caused by visible lint, grit, or sticky residue? Remove the debris first; use only a manufacturer-approved water method for sticky contamination.
- Was water or salt water involved? Rinse with fresh water where the manufacturer permits it, then dry completely before oiling.
- Is the joint clean and dry but still rough? Apply the lubricant specified for the model to the pivot or friction surface, cycle the implement, and wipe away excess.
- Is the tool still stiff, damaged, or unusually loose? Stop adding oil and contact the manufacturer’s model-specific support or service channel.
Routine care is intentionally conservative: clean the affected joint, remove all moisture, use the maker-approved lubricant sparingly, and avoid repairs that the model’s instructions do not explain. That approach restores ordinary friction-related stiffness without treating every multitool design as interchangeable.
