The safest way to clean an anime figure is to start dry: use a clean, very soft brush with light strokes, support fragile parts, and stop when the dust is gone. For a fingerprint or spot that remains, use the smallest possible amount of water on a white lint-free cloth or cotton swab only after testing an inconspicuous area. Keep moisture away from fabric, flocking, labels, joints, hollow sections, adhesives and openings, and never reach for alcohol, solvents or abrasives on a factory-painted figure.

Choose the method by material, dirt and construction

There is no universal “figure-safe” cleaner. A single collectible may combine molded PVC, painted PVC or ABS, clear plastic, printed facial parts, metal or rubber-like accessories, adhesives and textile clothing. The method that is harmless on one part can lift paint, cloud a clear piece or stain another.

Good Smile Company explains that figures commonly use PVC and ABS and distinguishes color molded into the plastic from paint applied over a molded part. That distinction matters: molded color cannot be wiped off in the same way as a painted marking, but adjacent painted, printed or coated areas still need conservative treatment. Follow the instructions for the exact model whenever they exist.

What you see Safest starting point What to avoid
Loose dust on painted PVC/ABS Clean, very soft brush and light strokes Scrubbing, paper towels, abrasive pads
Dust in recesses or around a base Soft brush, then a manual air blower held at a controlled distance Close-range canned air or forceful blasts
Fingerprint or small spot on a compatible hard painted area Hidden-area test, then a barely damp white lint-free cloth or plain cotton swab Soaking, rubbing, alcohol, solvent cleaners
Cloth outfit, flocking or other textile Dry, gentle handling and the maker’s garment instructions Applying plastic-cleaning methods or unapproved washing
Resin, polystone, rubberized, electronic or custom-painted part Dry dusting only until the maker confirms a compatible method Assuming PVC/ABS advice applies

Use three questions before escalating: What is the surface and finish? Is the soil loose dust, skin oil, sticky residue or possible dye transfer? Can water enter a joint, hollow cavity, adhesive seam or electronic component? If any answer is uncertain, stay with dry dusting and consult the product instructions.

Prepare a low-risk cleaning station

Work on a clean, stable table with enough light to see paint edges and small parts. Wash and dry your hands before handling the figure, but avoid lotions that can leave a film. Keep a soft detailing brush, a manual air blower, white lint-free cloths and plain cotton swabs nearby. Use white materials so you can see whether paint or dye is transferring.

  • Remove rings, watches and bracelets that could catch a sculpted feature.
  • Place a clean, folded towel on the work surface to cushion a dropped part.
  • Photograph the figure before disassembly so small parts return to the correct position.
  • Set detached accessories in a tray rather than directly on the floor.
  • Do not clean in direct sunlight, beside a heater or in a humid room.

Do not begin with a bucket of water. A figure that looks like a solid statue may have hollow sections, unsealed joints or cavities that cannot drain completely.

Routine dry dusting: the default procedure

1. Stabilize the figure and fragile protrusions

Hold the base or the strongest central body section, not a thin weapon, hair tip, ribbon, ankle, antenna or raised hand. Use your free hand to support long hair strands and other flexible features from underneath. If the figure is top-heavy, leave it on its base while brushing instead of gripping it in the air.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Start at the highest surfaces

With a clean, very soft brush, use short, feather-light strokes from the top down. Let the bristles lift dust rather than pressing it across the paint. Work around hair, shoulders, sleeves and the upper face first, then move toward the torso, legs, base and underside.

3. Follow folds, seams and recesses

Turn the figure slowly and brush along clothing folds, sculpted grooves, between fingers, under bangs and where the feet meet the base. Use the tip of the brush rather than forcing the full bundle of bristles into a narrow gap. Keep one hand supporting a fragile part while the other works around it.

4. Remove dust from the brush

Pause frequently to tap the brush over a clean surface or wipe its bristles on a lint-free cloth. A dirty brush can redeposit grit or transfer color from another object. Never use the same brush for a dusty shelf and a figure without cleaning it first.

5. Inspect before doing anything wetter

Use a bright side light to look for remaining particles, fingerprints and shiny sticky patches. If the surface is clean, stop. Routine maintenance should not become an unnecessary wet-cleaning session.

Using a manual air blower safely

A hand-operated air blower can move loose dust from deep recesses after brushing. Aim it across the opening, not directly into a joint or cavity, and keep the nozzle far enough away that the airflow does not make a fragile part flex. A few controlled squeezes are preferable to a continuous blast.

Avoid close-range canned air. Its propellant can release liquid, and rapid expansion can chill the surface. Either effect can harm delicate parts or leave a contaminating film. A blower does not remove fingerprints, oily marks or adhered residue; switch to a tested local-moisture method only when the material and construction permit it.

Removing a fingerprint or stubborn spot from painted PVC/ABS

1. Identify the mark

Dust is loose and usually disappears with a brush. A fingerprint often looks slightly shiny and follows the shape of a fingertip. A dark line, tacky patch, color change or transferred dye may be staining, plasticizer migration, aging or finish damage rather than removable dirt. Do not attack an uncertain mark with a stronger chemical.

2. Test a hidden area

Choose an underside, rear edge or another place that is normally invisible. Dampen a plain cotton swab or corner of a white lint-free cloth with clean water, then wring or press it until it is barely damp rather than wet. Touch the test area lightly and wait for it to dry. Check for color on the cloth, tackiness, gloss change, softening or lifting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Dab or roll; never scrub

If the test is unchanged, touch the spot with the barely damp material. Dab once, or roll the swab gently so loosened soil transfers to a clean section. Do not make back-and-forth passes that grind particles into the paint. Use a fresh area of cloth as soon as it picks up dirt.

4. Remove any permitted detergent residue

Only use detergent if the manufacturer specifically permits it for that surface. Choose a small amount of diluted neutral detergent, apply it locally with a barely damp cloth, then use a separate cloth dampened with clean water to pick up residue. This is a spot treatment, not a bath.

5. Dry completely before reassembly

Pat the area with a dry lint-free cloth and leave the figure undisturbed until every seam, recess and joint is dry. Do not trap moisture by reinstalling a tight accessory or placing the figure in an enclosed case immediately. If the finish changes at any point, stop and contact the maker.

Why running water and soaking are usually unsafe

Running a figure under a tap can drive water into joints, hollow bodies, base sockets and adhesive seams. Water may remain unseen, swell or loosen an attached part, corrode an insert or create a mark when it dries. A cloth outfit, flocked surface, paper label or printed face can also absorb or spread moisture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not soak or rinse a figure unless the manufacturer explicitly approves that treatment for the exact model and construction. Even a figure made mainly from PVC and ABS may include finishes and assemblies that cannot tolerate washing. If instructions do approve water, follow their temperature, detergent, disassembly and drying requirements exactly; otherwise use local, controlled moisture only.

Cloth outfits, hair accessories and fabric parts

Handle textile clothing as a separate material, not as another painted surface. Do not wipe a dark costume with the same damp cloth used on plastic, and do not apply plastic cleaners to fabric, flocking or paper details. Check the garment or figure maker’s care instructions before attempting any wash.

Long contact between dark fabric and PVC can transfer dye, especially with friction, heat or humidity. Good Smile Company Customer Support’s handling guidance, updated May 31, 2024, states: “Color transfer of dye to PVC is difficult to prevent due to the nature of the material.” This is a material risk, not proof that a particular mark can be cleaned away safely.

Reduce transfer during display and storage

  • Insert vinyl between a dark cloth outfit and the PVC where the maker recommends a barrier.
  • Store cloth parts separately when the design allows it.
  • Keep the figure cool and dry and limit friction at contact points.
  • Inspect hidden areas periodically rather than waiting for a visible stain.

If dye has already transferred, stronger rubbing can remove the figure’s own finish along with the stain. Stop at gentle dry handling and ask the manufacturer about that exact textile and plastic combination.

Material-specific limits

Painted and molded PVC/ABS

Use dry dusting as the default. Molded-in color and painted markings may sit side by side, and clear coats or printed faces can react differently from the surrounding plastic. Spot-test any moisture and keep it local. A product-specific PVC figure manual recommends a soft, dry cloth, warns against abrasive cleaners and chemicals, and advises storage in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight; that manual is guidance for its model, not a universal washing rule.

Clear parts and glossy finishes

Clear plastic, gloss coatings and transparent effects show scratches and haze easily. Brush with almost no pressure and keep grit from being dragged across the surface. Do not polish with household products or abrasive cloths.

Resin and polystone

Resin and polystone can have different porosity, coatings and painted details from PVC. Until the maker confirms a compatible liquid, limit care to a soft dry brush and controlled blower. Never assume that a hard, heavy part can be rinsed.

Flocked and rubberized surfaces

Flocking can mat or shed, while rubberized finishes may become tacky with age or incompatible cleaners. Avoid moisture, pressure and solvent-based products unless the manufacturer gives material-specific instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Electronics, magnets and unusual customs

Light-up bases, sound modules, magnets, custom paint and adhesive-mounted additions add failure points. Remove power where the instructions allow, keep liquid away from openings and use only the maker’s procedure. For an unknown custom finish, dry dusting is the defensible stopping point.

Products and chemicals to keep away

  • Rubbing alcohol and isopropyl alcohol
  • Acetone and other solvent cleaners
  • Window cleaner, bleach and citrus cleaners
  • Melamine foam and scouring creams
  • Abrasive sponges, polishing compounds and rough cloths
  • Paper towel used with pressure
  • Close-range canned air

These products can dissolve or soften paint, change sheen, leave residue, scratch a clear part or attack an adhesive. “Stronger” is not a safer way to remove a mark from a collectible.

Diagnose damage before trying to clean it

Symptom Likely concern Safe response
Paint appears on the cloth Paint is lifting or the finish is incompatible Stop immediately; let the area dry and contact the maker
Surface becomes tacky Plasticizer migration, aging or chemical attack Do not apply more cleaner or rub the area
Gloss or color changes Finish damage or reaction Stop and document the area for manufacturer support
Yellowing or fading Age, heat or light exposure rather than ordinary dust Reduce light and heat; do not use a stronger cleaner
Dark mark near cloth Possible dye transfer Separate the materials and avoid friction or solvents
Water remains in a joint Construction cannot drain safely Do not reassemble; follow maker drying guidance

Photograph a questionable change in neutral light and note what touched the area, but do not continue experimenting. A manufacturer can distinguish a removable surface contaminant from a coating, plastic or dye problem more reliably than a series of increasingly aggressive home treatments.

Prevent dust and future marks

Prevention reduces how often you need to touch the figure. An enclosed display cabinet limits airborne dust, although it does not eliminate occasional cleaning. Keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight, radiators, vents and damp rooms. Avoid packing a figure tightly against dark fabric or another painted object.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Handle the collectible by its base or sturdy torso, support protruding parts, and wash hands before display changes. Rotate accessories and clothing only according to the instructions, checking contact points for rubbing. Store detached parts in clean, labeled bags or compartments so they do not scratch one another.

A practical maintenance schedule without invented frequency rules

No published source establishes a universal safe cleaning interval or damage rate. Instead of assigning a number of days, inspect according to the environment:

  • Check sooner in an open shelf, near a vent, during construction or where pets create airborne debris.
  • Inspect less often when an enclosed cabinet stays clean and dry.
  • Dust when you can see accumulation, not on a schedule that forces unnecessary handling.
  • Examine cloth contact points whenever an outfit remains on the figure for a long period.

This approach responds to actual dust and transfer risk without pretending that every room or material ages at the same rate.

When to stop and ask the manufacturer

Stop cleaning and seek model-specific advice if you cannot identify the material, the mark is tacky or discolored, paint transfers, a finish changes, water entered a cavity, a textile is bleeding dye, or the item is resin, polystone, flocked, electronic or custom-painted. Product instructions take priority because figures vary in finishes, construction, included textiles and adhesives.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When contacting support, provide the model name, photographs, the affected part, the substance used (if any), whether the area was wet or dry, and when the change appeared. This gives the maker enough context to recommend recovery or confirm that the condition is aging rather than dirt.

Quick decision checklist

  1. Identify the exact part: painted, molded, clear, fabric, flocked, resin, rubberized or electronic.
  2. Classify the soil: loose dust, fingerprint, sticky residue, dye transfer or an unexplained color change.
  3. Support fragile features and secure a clean, padded workspace.
  4. Brush dry with a clean, very soft brush from top to bottom.
  5. Use a manual blower only for loose dust in recesses.
  6. If a hard compatible surface still needs help, hidden-area test a barely damp white cloth or cotton swab.
  7. Dab or roll gently; never scrub or use pressure.
  8. Keep liquid away from textiles, labels, joints, cavities and openings.
  9. Dry every recess before reassembly or display.
  10. Stop at the first sign of paint transfer, tackiness or finish change and contact the maker.
