The safest way to clean suede UGGs is to remove dry dirt first, use only a small amount of the maker-approved cleaner on a damp sponge, preserve the shoe’s shape while it dries naturally, and brush the nap after it is completely dry. UGG specifically says to avoid machine washing and dry cleaning, which can cause irreparable damage to its delicate footwear.
Other suede shoes may use different dyes, finishes, linings, adhesives, or waterproof treatments. Treat the UGG method below as UGG’s procedure for its own footwear, not as a universal rule. Before applying any product to another brand, read that shoe’s care label and manufacturer instructions.
Before cleaning: identify the material and the maker’s instructions
Confirm that the shoe is actually suede or sheepskin
Suede, nubuck, smooth leather, coated leather, and fabric can react differently to moisture and cleaners. Check the tongue, lining, box, care label, or product page for the stated material. UGG’s care guidance covers several of its own materials, but it does not establish one safe treatment for every suede finish or construction.

Separate loose dirt from set-in stains
Look at the shoe in good light. Dry dust, mud flakes, and surface scuffs are different problems from oil, wet-set stains, dye transfer, or salt residue. Start with the least aggressive treatment that matches the problem. Do not saturate a shoe simply because a dry brush has not yet been tried.
Prepare the correct tools
- A suede brush for loose dirt and for lifting the nap after drying.
- A suede eraser for minor dry dust or touch-ups, where the maker permits it.
- A clean sponge and the cleaner specified for the shoe.
- Plain paper towels for supporting the shape while the footwear dries.
- A well-ventilated drying area away from direct heat and sunlight.
UGG describes a care kit containing protector, cleaner and conditioner, freshener, a bamboo brush, and a suede scuff eraser. A kit is convenient, but the important decision is whether each item is compatible with the particular material and model.
Remove dry dirt and minor surface marks
Brush first
For UGG footwear, the official instruction for a dry stain is to brush with a suede brush. Work gently rather than grinding the bristles into the nap. Brush in a consistent direction and stop when loose dirt has been removed. Brushing a damp or muddy shoe can spread the mark, so allow wet mud to dry before attempting this dry-cleaning step.
Use an eraser only as a spot tool
UGG’s care video describes its suede eraser as useful for minor dust or touch-ups. Treat it as a localized tool, not a replacement for cleaning residue or an oily mark. If an eraser changes the texture or color, stop and follow the shoe maker’s instructions instead of expanding the treated area.
When a dry brush is not enough
UGG says that if residue or an oily mark remains after brushing, its care-kit guidance should be used. Do not improvise with household detergent, solvent, or a large amount of water. Those substances can alter the nap, dye, backing, or adhesive, and their suitability is not established for all suede footwear.
UGG Cleaner & Conditioner: the official cleaning sequence
The following sequence is UGG’s method for its Cleaner & Conditioner. It is not a guarantee for another brand or for a suede finish that the maker treats differently.
- Brush away loose dirt. Start with dry, gentle brushing so grit does not become abrasive paste during wet cleaning.
- Dampen the surface with a clean sponge. The sponge should be damp, not dripping. UGG’s directions call for moistening the surface before applying the formula.
- Put a small amount of cleaner on the damp sponge. Apply the product to the sponge rather than pouring it directly onto the shoe.
- Scrub gently. Work over the affected suede with light pressure. Avoid aggressive rubbing concentrated on one small patch.
- Remove residue with the sponge. Use the sponge to lift away remaining cleaner, following UGG’s instructions rather than leaving a visible film to dry on the nap.
- Support the shape. Stuff boots, slippers, or slides with paper towels. Fill them enough to hold their normal form without stretching the material.
- Dry naturally for 24 hours. Leave the footwear in a cool, ventilated area away from direct heat and sunlight. Once completely dry, lightly brush in one direction.
Do not shorten the drying period merely because the outside feels dry. Moisture can remain in the lining or under the nap, and direct heat can distort the shape or dry the material unevenly.

How to dry and reshape suede safely
Use airflow, not heat
For the UGG procedure, natural drying means a cool, ventilated location away from heaters, radiators, hair dryers, fireplaces, and direct sun. Heat can affect delicate materials and may leave a tide mark or uneven texture. Keep the pair together so both shoes experience the same conditions.
Maintain the original form
Paper towels inside the footwear help retain the shape during the 24-hour drying period. Replace them if they become wet. Do not force a misshapen shoe over a rigid form or stretch it while the suede is damp.
Brush only after the shoe is dry
When the footwear is fully dry, use a light, one-direction brushing motion to restore the nap. Brushing too hard or in multiple directions can create a visibly uneven surface.
UGG Protector: prevention, not waterproofing
UGG’s protector instructions apply to clean, dry sheepskin or suede. Use the product in a well-ventilated area and follow this sequence:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Shake the bottle.
- Hold it about six inches from the surface.
- Spray evenly until the material is wet but not soaked.
- Allow the footwear to dry naturally for 24 hours in a cool, ventilated area away from direct heat and sunlight.
- When dry, brush lightly in one direction.
Protection does not turn every suede shoe into waterproof footwear. UGG’s own FAQ states: “Not all UGG® Classic boots are water-resistant or waterproof.” The company says only selected styles have a post-applied treatment and advises checking the individual style page for the wording “Post-Applied Treatment” or “Waterproof.” On an eligible style, protector may help maintain and extend water resistance; it should not be described as a waterproofing guarantee.
Odor, wet footwear, and the inside of the shoe
Air footwear regularly
UGG recommends airing its footwear regularly. Let the shoes ventilate between wears instead of sealing them while they are warm or damp. This addresses odor management; it does not clean a stained suede exterior.
Dry wet UGG boots with paper
For wet UGG boots, UGG says newspaper can be used as stuffing to help remove odors and retain shape while the boots dry. Replace damp paper as needed and keep the boots away from direct heat and sunlight. The same caution about the maker’s instructions applies to other brands, especially shoes with glued decorations, membranes, or unusual linings.

Use Shoe Renew only as an interior product
UGG’s Shoe Renew instructions are for the inside or insoles: spray it and allow it to dry before wearing. Do not confuse an interior deodorizer with an exterior suede cleaner, stain treatment, or protector.
What not to do
- Do not machine-wash UGG boots, slippers, or slides. UGG’s FAQ says: “All our boots, slippers and slides are made from delicate, premium materials and machine-washing or dry-cleaning them can cause damage beyond repair.”
- Do not dry-clean them unless the maker explicitly permits it. UGG specifically warns against dry cleaning its delicate footwear.
- Do not use a protector on a dirty shoe. UGG’s protector directions begin with clean, dry sheepskin or suede; spraying over grime can lock in an uneven appearance.
- Do not soak the footwear. UGG calls for a damp sponge and a light spray until wet but not soaked, not immersion.
- Do not use direct heat or sunlight to speed drying. The official directions require natural drying in a cool, ventilated area.
- Do not assume a product is compatible because it says “suede.” Check whether the maker permits it for the exact material, finish, and model.
Cleaning other suede shoes when UGG’s instructions do not apply
There is no single treatment proven for every suede shoe. Use this decision path to stay within the information supplied by the shoe maker:
- Read the care label and product instructions. Follow those directions over a generic internet method.
- Identify the construction. Note whether the shoe is suede, nubuck, sheepskin, leather, or a mixed-material design.
- Start dry. If the maker allows it, remove loose dirt with a suede brush and use an eraser only for a small, minor mark.
- Match the product to the material. Use a cleaner, conditioner, or protector only when the manufacturer states that it is suitable.
- Keep moisture controlled. If wet cleaning is permitted, follow the stated application method and drying conditions exactly.
- Escalate unusual damage. Oil saturation, dye transfer, mold, severe water marks, peeling finish, or structural damage may require a professional suede or footwear restorer chosen through the manufacturer or a reputable local service.
For UGG products, the company states that its Protector and Shoe Renew may be used on its boots, shoes, and slippers; its bamboo brush may be used on sheepskin, suede, and nubuck; and its Cleaner & Conditioner may be used on sheepskin, suede, and leather. UGG recommends its Leather Care Kit for leather shoes. These are UGG-specific compatibility statements, not a blanket approval for unrelated brands.
Care kit or individual products?
| Choice | Best suited to | What it does | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Complete suede shoe care kit | Owners who need several compatible tools for one maker’s footwear | May combine protector, cleaner and conditioner, freshener, brush, and suede eraser | Confirm that every component is approved for the exact shoe material |
| Suede brush | Loose dry dirt and post-cleaning nap care | Removes surface debris and lightly lifts the nap when dry | Does not replace a cleaner for residue or oily marks |
| Suede eraser | Minor dry dust or small touch-ups | Provides localized dry treatment | Not a substitute for cleaning set-in residue; stop if texture or color changes |
| Cleaner and conditioner | Stains where the maker permits damp cleaning | Applied with a damp sponge in the UGG sequence | Requires controlled moisture and natural drying; compatibility varies |
| Protector spray | Preventive care on clean, dry compatible suede or sheepskin | May help maintain water resistance on eligible treated styles | Does not make every shoe waterproof |
Stain and problem troubleshooting
The mark is dry dust or a light surface scuff
Begin with a suede brush. If the mark is minor and the maker permits an eraser, use it only on the affected spot. Brush lightly afterward once the surface is dry.
Residue remains after brushing
For UGG footwear, move to the Cleaner & Conditioner sequence rather than repeatedly brushing. For another brand, use only the cleaner and method stated in its instructions.
The mark is oily
UGG directs owners toward its care-kit guidance when an oily mark remains. Avoid adding unapproved household products, which can spread the oil or alter the dye. If the manufacturer provides no method, ask a qualified suede-restoration service before treating the entire shoe.
The shoe is wet and smells
Air it, support its shape with paper, and let it dry naturally. UGG allows newspaper stuffing for wet boots and recommends regular airing. Use an interior product such as Shoe Renew only according to its instructions; deodorizing does not remove an exterior stain.

The nap looks uneven after cleaning
Wait until the shoe is fully dry, then brush lightly in one direction. Do not apply more cleaner simply to correct texture. If the color or nap remains damaged, further home treatment may worsen the result.
A practical maintenance routine
- After wearing, let the footwear air rather than storing it while warm or damp.
- When dry dirt appears, brush gently before it becomes embedded.
- Use an eraser only for a small, permitted touch-up.
- Clean with the maker-approved product when brushing is insufficient.
- Support the shape and allow the full natural drying time specified by the instructions.
- Brush the dry nap lightly in one direction.
- Apply protector only to clean, dry, compatible material and never treat the spray as a waterproof guarantee.
This routine minimizes unnecessary wet cleaning while keeping the treatment tied to the shoe’s actual material and manufacturer guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to plan the job before you start
Set aside enough time for the entire process, not just the scrubbing. UGG’s cleaner and protector directions each call for 24 hours of natural drying. Cleaning immediately before wearing can leave the nap, lining, or shape unfinished. Gather the brush, sponge, approved formula, paper towels, and a ventilated drying location first so you are not tempted to substitute a household product or place the shoes near a heater.
Clean both shoes as a pair when the same treatment is appropriate. Even if only one shoe has a visible mark, treating the matching surfaces consistently can avoid an obvious difference in texture. This does not mean saturating the pair: use only the controlled moisture and product amount in the applicable instructions.
Choosing products by task
The products in a suede kit are not interchangeable. A brush is a dry-debris and nap tool. An eraser is a localized option for a minor dry mark. Cleaner and conditioner is for a permitted damp-cleaning procedure. Protector is preventive and belongs on clean, dry, compatible material. Freshener or Shoe Renew addresses odor inside the footwear, not an exterior stain. Reading the label for the exact task prevents the common mistake of using a protector as a cleaner or an interior deodorizer on the nap.
UGG’s compatibility statements are specific: its Protector and Shoe Renew are described for UGG boots, shoes, and slippers; its bamboo brush is described for sheepskin, suede, and nubuck; and its Cleaner & Conditioner is described for sheepskin, suede, and leather. UGG points leather-shoe owners to its Leather Care Kit. A different brand may use a different finish or adhesive, so those approvals should not be transferred automatically.
When a professional is the safer choice
Home care is most defensible for loose dirt, minor dry marks, and a stain that the maker’s instructions explicitly address. Stop when color starts lifting, the nap becomes bald or shiny, the finish peels, or an oily or dye-transfer mark spreads. Mold, severe water marks, structural distortion, and valuable or vintage footwear also justify asking the maker or a qualified suede-restoration service first. A professional cannot guarantee an invisible repair, but additional unapproved scrubbing can make restoration harder.

Frequently overlooked details
- Drying is part of cleaning. The 24-hour period is not an optional waiting suggestion in UGG’s sequence; it allows the shape and nap to settle before brushing.
- “Water-resistant” is not “waterproof.” Verify the individual UGG style page for “Post-Applied Treatment” or “Waterproof.”
- Inside and outside need different products. Shoe Renew is an interior spray, while Cleaner & Conditioner is used in the exterior cleaning sequence.
- Brand boundaries matter. UGG’s instructions are strongest evidence for UGG footwear, not a universal prescription for every suede shoe.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get stains out of my UGG footwear?
For a dry stain, UGG says to brush with a suede brush. If residue or an oily mark remains, follow UGG’s Cleaner & Conditioner directions: dampen the surface with a clean sponge, apply a small amount to the sponge, scrub gently, remove residue, stuff the footwear with paper towels, and let it dry naturally for 24 hours. Brush lightly in one direction only after it is completely dry.
Can you machine-wash UGG boots and slippers?
UGG says machine washing or dry cleaning its boots, slippers, and slides can cause damage beyond repair. Do not machine-wash them unless the maker of that exact product explicitly provides different instructions.
How long should cleaned UGGs dry?
UGG’s Cleaner & Conditioner and Protector directions call for 24 hours of natural drying in a cool, ventilated area away from direct heat and sunlight. Do not wear or brush them until they are fully dry.
Recommended Free Tools
Does UGG Protector make suede boots waterproof?
No. UGG states that not all Classic boots are water-resistant or waterproof. Check the individual style page for “Post-Applied Treatment” or “Waterproof.” Protector may help maintain or extend water resistance on eligible styles, but it is not a universal waterproofing guarantee.
Can I use UGG Cleaner & Conditioner on any suede shoe?
No. UGG describes the product for sheepskin, suede, and leather within its own product guidance. Other shoes may have different dyes, finishes, or construction, so follow that maker’s care label and product instructions.
What is the difference between a suede brush and a suede eraser?
A suede brush removes loose dry dirt and lightly restores the nap after drying. UGG describes its eraser as a tool for minor dust or touch-ups. An eraser is not a substitute for the cleaner needed for residue or oily marks.
How should I handle wet UGG boots that smell?
Air them and support their shape with paper while they dry naturally. UGG says newspaper can be used to stuff wet boots to help remove odors and retain shape. Shoe Renew is intended for the inside or insoles and should not be treated as an exterior suede cleaner.
When should I stop cleaning suede at home?
Stop if color, texture, or the nap changes, or if the shoe has oil saturation, dye transfer, mold, severe water marks, peeling finish, or structural damage. Ask the manufacturer or a qualified suede-restoration service before applying more product.
The Bottom Line
For UGGs, brush away dry dirt, use the brand’s damp-sponge Cleaner & Conditioner sequence when needed, stuff the footwear to preserve its shape, and allow 24 hours of natural drying before brushing. Use Protector only on clean, dry, compatible material, and remember that it does not make every style waterproof. For other suede shoes, the maker’s material-specific instructions take priority.
