The safest way to clean open-ear clip-on earbuds is to follow the exact model’s care instructions, use a soft cloth or swab, keep charging contacts dry, protect microphone and sound openings, and let every damp part dry completely before use or charging. There is no universal alcohol, wipe, brush, or water recipe: TCL permits a specific 75% medical-alcohol method for specified areas, while Bose and Sony prohibit alcohol or solvents on their products.
Open-ear designs put sound mesh, microphones, clips, touch surfaces and charging contacts close to skin, hair, sweat and dust. Clean each area gently and separately rather than treating the earbuds as waterproof objects that can be rinsed or immersed.
What to check before cleaning
Find the manual or official support page for your exact model before applying any liquid. The outer housing, ear-clip contact area, sound mesh, microphone ports, charging contacts and case may have different instructions. A method approved for one product can damage another.
- Check the permitted cleaner. Some manufacturers allow only a dry cloth; some allow a cloth dampened with water; TCL gives a model-specific 75% medical-alcohol instruction for certain areas. Do not generalize that exception.
- Check moisture limits. A water-resistance rating does not make an earbud suitable for immersion, showering or charging while wet.
- Check the case separately. The case can have different materials, openings and water-resistance limits from the earbuds.
- Power down when the manual requires it. Remove the earbuds from your ears and stop playback before handling them.
Materials that are usually appropriate
Use only tools allowed by the product instructions. A clean, soft microfiber cloth is a broadly useful starting point for dry dust and surface marks; TCL specifically recommends one. A soft cotton swab is useful where a manufacturer permits it, especially around contacts. Keep separate dry swabs for charging contacts so residue or moisture from another area is not transferred.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not assume that a commercial earbud-cleaning kit, disinfectant wipe, alcohol pad, detergent, acetone, ammonia, abrasive, brush, compressed-air duster or vacuum is safe. The absence of visible dirt is not a reason to force a tool into a grille. If your manual does not explicitly permit a liquid or tool, use a dry, soft cloth and stop when the residue does not lift easily.
How to clean open-ear clip-on earbuds safely
- Read the model instructions. Open the manufacturer’s manual or support page and identify separate directions for the earbuds, contacts, mesh, microphones and case.
- Remove and inspect. Take both earbuds out of your ears and out of the charging case. Look for hair, skin oil, lint, dried sweat, dirt or corrosion around the clip, sound outlet and contact pads. Do not scrape anything yet.
- Start dry. With a clean, dry microfiber cloth, wipe the exterior, clip surfaces and touch areas using light pressure. Fold the cloth so a clean section contacts each earbud.
- Clean approved contact areas. If the manual permits a swab or a damp cloth on a particular surface, use the smallest amount needed and keep liquid away from openings and contacts. Follow the model-specific instructions below instead of improvising.
- Work around sound mesh and microphones. Wipe the surrounding surface gently. Do not push a swab into a grille, poke with a pin, brush forcefully, blow air into a port or use a vacuum unless the exact manual explicitly allows it.
- Clean charging contacts dry. Use a dry, soft cotton swab or dry cloth where the manufacturer recommends it. Lift residue rather than grinding it into the contact. Do not drip cleaner onto the pins or pads.
- Clean the case separately. Remove loose debris with a dry cloth or the case-approved swab. Keep liquid out of the charging wells, hinge, USB port and electronic seams.
- Dry completely. After any permitted damp cleaning or exposure to sweat or rain, leave the earbuds and case open in a dry place. Do not dock, use or charge them until every surface and contact is completely dry.
- Inspect before charging. Confirm that no cloth fibers, moisture or loosened debris remain on the contacts or inside the case wells. If charging is still unreliable, follow the troubleshooting section rather than applying more liquid.
Model-specific cleaning instructions
The following differences are why a single “clean your earbuds with alcohol” recipe is unsafe.
| Model | Exterior and permitted cleaner | Mesh, microphone and openings | Charging contacts and case | Moisture limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TCL clip-on earbuds | TCL recommends a soft, dry microfiber cloth for dust and stains. For the ear-clip contact area and sound mesh, its FAQ describes a cotton swab moistened with 75% medical alcohol. | Use the 75% medical-alcohol method only for the areas TCL identifies. Do not turn it into a general rule for other earbuds. | Use a dry cotton swab on charging contacts. Keep cleaner out of the charging area. | Do not immerse the earbuds, even when they support water resistance. TCL also warns against corrosive cleaners containing alcohol or acetone; interpret the 75% instruction literally as a limited, specified method. |
| Bose Ultra Open Earbuds | Use a soft cotton swab or a cloth dampened with water only. The owner’s guide says: “Do not use any solvents, chemicals, or cleaning solutions containing alcohol, ammonia, or abrasives.” | Do not blow air into or vacuum microphone ports. Avoid forcing material into openings. | Wipe contacts only with a dry, soft cotton swab or equivalent. Clean the case with the water-only damp cloth or swab permitted by the guide, keeping liquid out of openings. | Follow the owner’s guide and dry all parts before returning the earbuds to the case. |
| Nothing Ear (open) | Use the manufacturer’s drying and surface-care instructions rather than assuming that the IP rating permits wet cleaning. | Keep liquid and debris out of sound and microphone openings. | Do not place the earbuds in the case while damp; inspect the case wells before docking. | Nothing identifies Ear (open) as IP54 under IEC 60529, but says resistance can decrease over time. Do not wear it while showering, bathing or swimming. After rain or sweat, wipe it with a dry, lint-free cloth and wait until completely dry. Immersion damage is excluded from the warranty. |
| Sony LinkBuds Open (WF-L910) | Sony advises avoiding alcohol and other solvents on the earbud surfaces. Use a dry, soft cloth where directed. | Do not use an air duster near microphone or sound-output holes; it can drive dust farther inside. | Use a cotton swab or dry, soft cloth for charging contacts. | Keep moisture out and follow the model’s drying instructions before charging or storage. |
| SOUNDPEATS PearlClip Pro | Product support mentions a microfiber cloth for cleaning between the earbuds and case when investigating charging behavior. | Clean openings only with the gentle, model-approved method; do not force debris inward. | Ensure charging contacts are clean. Use the microfiber-cloth guidance for the earbud-to-case contact area. | Keep the contacts and case dry before charging. |
How to clean the sound mesh without damaging it
The sound mesh is a barrier, not a surface to dig through. Begin by wiping the flat area around it with a dry cloth. If the manufacturer permits a swab or specified cleaner on the mesh, barely moisten the swab and touch only the approved area. Stop if the material begins to fray, deform or release color.

Firm brushing can detach fibers or drive particles through the grille. Compressed air can force contamination into the earbud, and a vacuum can stress delicate membranes or microphone ports. If sound remains muffled after gentle external cleaning, do not increase pressure or add stronger chemicals. Check the manual for a service procedure. Persistent blockage, rattling, channel imbalance or a damaged grille may require manufacturer support rather than home repair.
Cleaning microphones and other openings
Microphone ports are usually smaller and more vulnerable than the outer shell. Wipe around them with a dry cloth or the exact tool named by the manufacturer. Keep swab fibers from snagging in the port. Never insert a needle, toothpick, paper corner or bristle unless the manual expressly specifies that method.
Do not blow into a microphone opening. Breath carries moisture and can move dust deeper. Avoid household vacuums and air compressors as well. If a call or transparency feature sounds abnormal after cleaning, test in a quiet location and check that no case lint or film covers the port; do not flood the opening with cleaner.
Cleaning charging contacts and the case
Charging faults often come from a thin film of skin oil, sweat residue or lint on the contact surfaces. Remove the earbuds from power, then wipe the contacts with a dry, soft cotton swab or cloth if the manual recommends that method. Use light, one-directional strokes and rotate to a clean part of the swab. Never scrape with metal.

Inspect the matching contacts and wells in the case. A dry microfiber cloth can remove loose debris from the case exterior; a swab can reach a well only if the manual allows it. Keep USB ports, hinge gaps and charging wells dry. Do not spray cleaner onto the case or pour liquid into a recess.
After cleaning, seat each earbud in the case and confirm that the charging indicator behaves normally. If one side does not charge, remove it and inspect for a remaining fiber, misalignment or moisture. Clean the contact again while dry and retry. If the problem persists, stop repeated docking and consult the model’s support procedure.
Rain, sweat and water resistance
Water resistance reduces risk; it does not make an earbud washable. Ratings are tested under defined conditions and can decline through wear, drops, seal damage and aging. Nothing’s Ear (open), for example, is rated IP54 under IEC 60529, but Nothing says that resistance may decrease over time and excludes immersion damage from the warranty.

Never accelerate drying with a hair dryer, heater, radiator or direct hot air. Heat can deform plastics, adhesives and seals. Room-temperature air and patience are safer. If liquid entered a port or the earbud was immersed, do not charge it; follow the manufacturer’s support or service instructions.
What not to do
- Do not immerse or rinse the earbuds, even when a product advertises water resistance.
- Do not apply alcohol, acetone, ammonia, solvent, abrasive or disinfectant unless the exact model’s instructions explicitly permit that product and location.
- Do not transfer TCL’s limited 75% medical-alcohol direction to Bose, Sony, Nothing, SOUNDPEATS or another model.
- Do not use a damp cloth on charging contacts unless the manual specifically allows it; dry contact cleaning is the safer default.
- Do not blow, vacuum, or use compressed air around microphone and sound openings.
- Do not scrape contacts or mesh with pins, blades, metal tools or hard brushes.
- Do not return damp earbuds to the case or connect a charger before drying is complete.
Care habits that reduce cleaning problems
Store the earbuds in their case when they are not being worn, but only after they are dry. Keep the case closed in a clean, dry location so lint and pocket debris do not collect in the wells. Handle the clip by its sturdy outer section rather than pressing directly on a grille or microphone.
Wipe visible sweat or skin oil from the exterior after use with the model-approved dry cloth. Cleaning a small amount of residue early requires less pressure than removing a hardened film later. Keep the cloth itself clean and fully dry; a dirty cloth can spread grit across the finish.

Troubleshooting after cleaning
One earbud will not charge
- Remove both earbuds and inspect the contacts and case wells under good light.
- Use the model-approved dry swab or cloth to remove residue; do not add liquid.
- Check that the earbud sits in the correct orientation and that no cloth fiber blocks the contact.
- Allow everything to reach room-temperature dryness, then dock and test again.
- If charging still fails, stop repeated attempts and use the manufacturer’s support process; a bent contact, battery fault or liquid damage may be involved.
Sound is muffled or uneven
Check that the sound mesh is not covered by lint or residue, then wipe only the exterior with the permitted method. Do not poke the grille or force air through it. If the imbalance remains, test the earbuds on another source and seek model support rather than escalating to solvents or tools.
Calls or voice controls sound poor
Inspect microphone openings for surface lint and clean around them gently. Do not blow, vacuum or use an air duster near the ports. Moisture can also affect microphones, so let the earbuds dry completely before testing again.
The finish looks cloudy or damaged
Stop using chemicals and abrasives. Wipe with the manufacturer-approved dry cloth and check the manual for material-specific care. If a coating has lifted or the housing is cracked, further rubbing can worsen it; contact the manufacturer about replacement parts or service. Bose states that replacement parts and accessories can be ordered through its customer service.
