Clean engraved AirPods with the same basic method Apple gives for any AirPods: use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth, use only a small amount of moisture when the instructions call for it, keep liquid away from openings, and never scrub with abrasive materials. Apple does not publish a separate cleaner or a preservation guarantee for engraved text, so clean gently and do not treat any solvent as proven safe for the engraving.
What is different about engraved AirPods?
Apple offers free AirPods personalization with options such as emoji, names, initials and numbers. However, Apple’s current cleaning guidance does not provide a special procedure for an engraved charging case. The engraving page describes personalization, not chemical compatibility, scratch resistance or long-term appearance during cleaning.
That leaves a clear, conservative rule: follow Apple’s ordinary charging-case instructions, avoid abrasion and avoid aggressive stain-removal experiments. Do not claim that rubbing alcohol, a particular solvent or a polishing technique is guaranteed to preserve the engraving. If the lettering or the surrounding finish is already scratched, discolored or peeling, cleaning cannot be assumed to restore it.
Identify the part you are cleaning first
Different AirPods parts have different moisture and drying instructions. Decide whether you are cleaning the outside of the engraved charging case, the AirPods themselves, the charging-port area or the speaker and microphone meshes before choosing a method.

Gather the safe supplies
- A soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
- A clean, dry, soft-bristled brush for loose debris around a charging port.
- Isopropyl alcohol only if you need it for the charging-case cloth, and only in a small amount.
- Fresh water for the cloth used on an AirPods body after exposure to a potentially damaging substance.
- For supported mesh procedures, Apple lists micellar water containing PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides, distilled water, a soft-bristled children’s toothbrush, two small cups and a paper towel as an alternative to its named cleaning kit.
Do not improvise with abrasive powders, scouring pads, sharp picks, metal tools or a household spray applied directly to the case or earbuds. Apple’s instructions specifically say not to use abrasive materials and not to place anything in charging ports.
How to clean an engraved AirPods charging case
- Disconnect and inspect. Remove the case from charging and take the AirPods out. Check the hinge, lid seam, charging connector and any wireless-charging surface for visible debris. The case should be closed only after all moisture has evaporated.
- Start dry. Wipe the engraved exterior with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Use light passes rather than pressure concentrated on the letters. A dry first pass removes ordinary fingerprints and loose dust without introducing liquid.
- Use minimal isopropyl alcohol only when necessary. If a mark remains, slightly dampen part of the cloth with isopropyl alcohol. The cloth should not be wet enough to drip, and the alcohol should never be poured, sprayed or applied directly to the case.
- Wipe the shell, not the openings. Work around the outside surfaces and the engraved area while keeping the damp section away from the charging ports, hinge gaps and other openings. Apple’s exact warning is: “Don’t get any liquid in the charging ports, and don’t use abrasive materials to clean the charging case.”
- Finish with a dry cloth. Use a second dry section of the lint-free cloth to remove remaining moisture. Leave the lid open in a clean, dry place until the case is fully dry.
- Stop when the mark does not lift easily. Do not increase pressure, scratch at the engraving or escalate to a solvent simply because a stain remains. Apple does not state that any stronger product is compatible with engraved surfaces.
This method treats the case as an AirPods charging case while acknowledging the evidence limit around the personalized text. It is safer than trying to “polish” the engraving, but it is not a guarantee against cosmetic change to a surface that is already worn.
Can you use alcohol on an engraved AirPods case?
Apple says the charging-case cloth may be slightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol if necessary. That permission applies to the case-cleaning instruction generally; Apple does not separately discuss engraved surfaces or promise that alcohol preserves engraved text.

Use the smallest practical amount on the cloth, never spray the case, and keep alcohol out of every charging opening. Do not soak the engraving, flood the lid seam or use repeated scrubbing to chase a stain. If a dry cloth removes the mark, there is no reason to add alcohol.
How to clean the AirPods themselves
The earbuds are not cleaned in the same way as the case. If an AirPod has been exposed to a substance that may stain or damage it, Apple advises wiping it with a cloth slightly dampened with fresh water. Follow that with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.

- Remove the AirPods from the charging case and disconnect them from power.
- Use a cloth moistened with fresh water, not running water, to wipe the affected exterior.
- Use a dry, soft, lint-free cloth to remove surface moisture.
- Keep the AirPods out of the case and do not attempt to use them until they are completely dry.
Apple requires at least two hours of drying after this type of cleaning: “Allow your AirPods to dry completely – for at least two hours – before placing them in the charging case or attempting to use them.” The two-hour period is a minimum, not a signal that the earbuds are safe to use while any moisture remains.
Never run the earbuds under a tap, immerse them, insert a pin or other sharp object into an opening, or scrub with an abrasive material. Liquid inside a microphone, speaker or sensor opening can create a problem that wiping the exterior will not solve.

Port debris is easy to push farther inside, so do not use a toothpick, SIM tool, paper clip, needle or cotton swab inside the connector. Apple’s charging-port direction is to use a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush around the port and not put anything into the port because of the metal contacts.
- Hold the open case with the port facing downward or sideways so loosened dust can fall away rather than deeper inside.
- With a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush, sweep around the outside edge of the port.
- Use short, gentle strokes and stop if debris does not release readily.
- Inspect the port under good light without inserting a tool.
- Only reconnect a cable or place the case on a charger after the area is dry and clear of loose debris.
Clean the speaker and microphone meshes by AirPods model
Mesh cleaning is a separate task from wiping an engraved case. Apple provides model-specific procedures for AirPods 3, AirPods 4 and AirPods 5 and identifies the exact mesh areas that may be cleaned. Follow the diagram and sequence for your model rather than applying one generic method to every generation.
Apple names a Belkin AirPods Cleaning Kit as one option for those supported mesh procedures. It also lists an alternative involving micellar water that contains PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides, distilled water, a soft-bristled children’s toothbrush, two small cups and a paper towel. The kit is not a requirement for routine charging-case care: Apple’s case instruction calls for a cloth and, if necessary, a little isopropyl alcohol on that cloth.

Whichever model-specific mesh method you use, clean only the indicated mesh areas, keep liquid away from other openings and complete the required drying period. Apple again specifies at least two hours before using the AirPods or putting them in the charging case.

- Do not use abrasive cleaners, polishing compounds, melamine foam, scouring pads or rough paper towels.
- Do not scrape the lettering with a fingernail, blade, pin or metal pick.
- Do not spray alcohol, water or another cleaner directly onto the case or AirPods.
- Do not let liquid pool in the lid seam, hinge, speaker openings or charging ports.
- Do not run AirPods under water or immerse them.
- Do not put objects into a charging port to dislodge compacted debris.
- Do not close damp AirPods inside the case, even if the case exterior looks dry.
- Do not assume a product marketed for mesh or electronics is automatically suitable for engraved plastic or metal.
A practical cleaning schedule
After ordinary daily handling
Use a dry, lint-free cloth on the case and AirPods. This is the lowest-moisture approach and avoids unnecessary exposure of the engraving and openings to cleaners.
After a sticky or potentially staining exposure
For the case, use the lightly dampened isopropyl-alcohol cloth procedure only if a dry cloth is insufficient. For an AirPod body, use a fresh-water-dampened cloth, dry it, and observe the full two-hour minimum before storage or use.
When debris is visible at a port
Use the dry soft-bristled brush around the port. Do not insert anything and do not add liquid.
When a mesh sounds blocked
Identify the AirPods model and use Apple’s current mesh instructions for that model. Do not substitute the charging-case method or a generic scrubbing routine.

If the engraving or finish already looks damaged
Stop cleaning when the surface appears scratched, the lettering changes, or discoloration does not lift with gentle wiping. More friction can make cosmetic damage worse, and Apple does not publish a restoration method for engraving. Photograph the condition, keep the case dry and contact Apple Support about service or replacement options.
