The safest routine is simple: identify the surface, let the bakeware cool completely, then use warm soapy water and a soft sponge unless the item’s own care guide says otherwise. Ceramic or stoneware, nonstick-coated metal, and ceramic-coated cookware can look similar but tolerate different detergents, scrubbers, heat changes, and dishwasher cycles. Treat the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact pan as the controlling rule.
When food is baked on, soaking is safer than forceful scraping. For ceramic or stoneware, KitchenAid advises soaking in hot, soapy water for 15 to 20 minutes, or longer when necessary, before gentle washing. Dishwasher permission is also item-specific: one line may be labeled dishwasher safe while another from a different material or manufacturer is hand-wash only.
Identify the bakeware surface before cleaning
Start with the material and coating, not the pan’s color or shape. “Ceramic bakeware” can mean solid ceramic or stoneware, while “ceramic nonstick” usually means a coating applied to metal cookware. Traditional nonstick bakeware is metal with a nonstick coating. Those constructions respond differently to abrasion, detergents, thermal shock, and dishwasher heat.

Ceramic or stoneware
Solid ceramic and stoneware are rigid and can crack when a hot piece is exposed suddenly to cold water. Their glaze may also be damaged by abrasive tools or chemicals that the maker excludes. KitchenAid’s ceramic-bakeware guide is a useful example: it permits dishwasher cleaning for its bakeware but recommends hand washing, and it cautions against oven cleaners, harsh detergents, chlorine bleach, steel wool, and nylon scrubbing pads. Read the instructions for your exact series at KitchenAid’s ceramic bakeware care guide.

Nonstick-coated metal bakeware
These pans have a metal body with a nonstick surface. A dishwasher-safe label may apply to one product family but not another, and a manufacturer can still recommend hand washing to preserve the finish. Calphalon’s bakeware support guidance describes dishwasher-safe lines while recommending hand washing with a soft, nonabrasive sponge. Its instructions also say to let bakeware cool before cleaning. Le Creuset’s care-and-use guidance, by contrast, identifies its cited nonstick metal bakeware as unsuitable for the dishwasher.
Ceramic-coated nonstick cookware
A ceramic nonstick coating is not the same thing as a solid ceramic baking dish. All-Clad’s ceramic-nonstick care instructions call for hand washing with warm, soapy water and a soft sponge or cloth, and warn that dishwasher heat and detergents can degrade the coating. That is cookware guidance for the cited line, not a universal rule for every ceramic bakeware product.
Quick care decision table
| Surface or example guidance | Dishwasher position | Preferred hand-washing method | Important cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| KitchenAid ceramic or stoneware bakeware | Described as dishwasher safe; hand washing recommended | Warm, soapy water and a soft sponge or cloth | Do not move hot bakeware into cold water. Avoid oven cleaners, harsh detergents, chlorine bleach, steel wool, and nylon scrubbing pads. Source |
| Calphalon nonstick bakeware lines | Varies by line; some are described as dishwasher safe, yet hand washing is recommended | Warm or hot soapy water and a soft, nonabrasive sponge | Cool the pan before washing. Check the care instructions for the specific line. Source |
| All-Clad cited ceramic nonstick cookware | Hand wash only in the cited guidance | Warm, soapy water and a soft sponge or cloth | Dishwasher heat and detergents can degrade the coating. This does not set the rule for all ceramic bakeware. Source |
| Le Creuset stoneware | Described as dishwasher safe | Follow the stoneware section of the care guide | Use the stoneware instructions, not the separate nonstick-metal instructions. Source |
| Le Creuset cited nonstick metal bakeware | Not suitable for the dishwasher | Hand wash according to the care guide | Do not transfer the stoneware dishwasher rule to this metal nonstick line. Source |
How to clean ceramic and nonstick bakeware safely
- Check the item’s own instructions. Look for a printed symbol, packaging insert, model number, or the manufacturer’s current care page. Confirm the material, whether dishwasher use is allowed, and which cleaners and tools are prohibited. If the label and a generic article disagree, use the item-specific instruction.
- Remove loose crumbs. Once the pan is safe to handle, empty crumbs and soft residue into the bin. Do not drag a knife, fork, metal spatula, or other sharp edge across a coated or glazed surface.
- Let the bakeware cool naturally. Do not put a hot dish directly under cold running water or into a sink of cold water. KitchenAid and Calphalon identify sudden temperature change as a risk for cracking or warping, and All-Clad likewise says to let ceramic nonstick cookware cool before cleaning. Set the item on a heat-safe surface until it is cool enough to wash.
- Prepare warm, soapy water. Use ordinary dish soap and water that is warm or hot enough to loosen grease without creating a thermal shock. Avoid adding bleach, oven cleaner, or a heavy-duty chemical unless the product’s guide expressly permits it.
- Wash with a soft tool. Use a soft sponge, dishcloth, or similarly nonabrasive implement. Work around the base, corners, rim, and any textured decoration. Keep pressure light; repeated aggressive scrubbing can wear a coating or scratch a glaze.
- Soak baked-on residue. For ceramic or stoneware, fill the cooled dish with hot, soapy water and soak for 15 to 20 minutes, or longer if needed, as KitchenAid recommends. Recheck the residue after soaking and lift it with the soft sponge. A second soak is preferable to scraping hard.
- Rinse completely. Remove soap and loosened particles with clean water. Inspect seams, handles, ridges, and corners where grease can remain.
- Dry as directed. Towel-dry with a clean cloth or allow the piece to air-dry if that is what its instructions specify. Before stacking, make sure the surface and any unglazed foot or rim are dry.
- Use a dishwasher only when the exact item permits it. Load the piece so it cannot strike other cookware, select the cycle recommended by the manufacturer, and avoid assuming that a dishwasher-safe stoneware dish makes a nonstick metal pan dishwasher safe.
Cleaning ceramic or stoneware bakeware
Everyday washing
After the dish cools, wash it in warm, soapy water with a soft sponge or cloth. Pay particular attention to the inside corners where batter, cheese, or oil can harden. A gentle circular motion usually removes fresh residue without putting concentrated force on one spot.

Stuck-on food
Soaking is the primary treatment for baked-on food. Fill the dish with hot, soapy water and leave it for 15 to 20 minutes or as long as needed. Drain part of the water if the dish is difficult to lift, then wipe softened residue away. Repeat the soak rather than switching to steel wool, a nylon scrubbing pad, or a sharp scraper. KitchenAid specifically lists those abrasive tools, along with oven cleaners, harsh detergents, and chlorine bleach, among the things to avoid for its ceramic bakeware.
Preventing thermal shock
Never transfer a hot ceramic or stoneware dish straight from an oven or warming appliance into cold water. Let it cool naturally first. The same caution applies in reverse: do not place a cold dish into a hot oven unless the product’s use instructions explicitly allow that temperature change. Cleaning guidance cannot override a bakeware maker’s limits for oven temperature or preheating.
Dishwasher use
Some ceramic and stoneware lines are labeled dishwasher safe. KitchenAid describes its ceramic bakeware that way while still recommending hand washing, and Le Creuset separately describes its stoneware as dishwasher safe. A dishwasher can therefore be acceptable for a particular item, but hand washing remains the lower-abrasion option when the manufacturer recommends it. Verify the mark or care page for your model before the first cycle.

Cleaning nonstick-coated metal bakeware
Protecting the coating
Cool the pan before washing, then use warm, soapy water and a soft, nonabrasive sponge. Do not use steel wool, scouring powder, a metal scraper, or another tool that can scratch the coating unless the product’s instructions specifically identify it as safe. If grease remains, allow the soapy water to sit on the surface for a few minutes and wipe again instead of increasing pressure.
Different lines have different dishwasher rules
Calphalon’s support material says dishwasher suitability varies among bakeware lines; it describes some as dishwasher safe but still recommends hand washing. Le Creuset’s cited instructions say its nonstick metal bakeware is not suitable for the dishwasher. These are not contradictory rules: they apply to different product families. Find the exact line and model before choosing a cycle.
When a coating is damaged
If you see peeling, deep scratches, flaking, or a surface that has become difficult to clean, stop using abrasive tools and consult the manufacturer’s replacement or safety guidance. Do not try to restore a damaged coating with household chemicals or improvised polishing. The care pages cited here explain cleaning, not a repair process, so a visibly failed surface should be evaluated under the product’s warranty or replacement policy.

Ceramic nonstick cookware is a separate care category
A ceramic-coated skillet or roasting pan can be mistaken for solid ceramic bakeware because both may have a pale, smooth surface. The construction matters. All-Clad’s ceramic nonstick instructions specify hand washing with warm, soapy water and a soft sponge or cloth. They also warn that dishwasher heat and detergents can degrade the coating. Use that guidance for the cited ceramic nonstick cookware line, but do not apply it automatically to every ceramic or stoneware baking dish. Conversely, a dishwasher-safe stoneware label does not authorize dishwasher use for ceramic-coated metal cookware.
How to decide whether your item can go in the dishwasher
- Find the exact product family. “Ceramic,” “stoneware,” and “nonstick” are broad descriptions. Locate the model, collection, or line name on the base, packaging, receipt, or manufacturer page.
- Read the current care statement. Look for an explicit “dishwasher safe,” “hand wash only,” or “not suitable for dishwasher” instruction. Do not infer permission from a similar-looking pan.
- Separate recommendation from permission. A manufacturer may permit a dishwasher but recommend hand washing, as KitchenAid does for its cited ceramic bakeware and Calphalon does for certain bakeware lines. If preserving the finish is the priority, follow the hand-wash recommendation.
- Check the material-specific section. Le Creuset’s care page has separate guidance for stoneware and nonstick metal bakeware. Read the section matching your item rather than applying the first result on the page.
- When no clear instruction exists, hand wash. Warm soapy water and a soft sponge are the conservative default while you seek the manufacturer’s answer. Do not treat uncertainty as permission for a hot detergent cycle.
Common mistakes and safer alternatives
| Mistake | Why it is risky | Safer alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Putting a hot dish into cold water | Sudden temperature change can crack ceramic or stoneware and may warp metal bakeware. | Let it cool naturally, then wash with warm water. |
| Scraping with a knife or metal utensil | Sharp edges can scratch a glaze or nonstick coating. | Soak first and use a soft sponge or cloth. |
| Using steel wool or a nylon scrubbing pad on ceramic | KitchenAid cautions against these tools for its ceramic bakeware. | Repeat a hot, soapy soak and wipe gently. |
| Applying oven cleaner, bleach, or harsh detergent | These chemicals are specifically excluded in KitchenAid’s ceramic-bakeware guidance and may be unsuitable for coatings. | Use ordinary dish soap unless the exact care guide says otherwise. |
| Assuming every nonstick pan is dishwasher safe | Dishwasher rules vary by product line; some cited products are hand wash only. | Verify the model’s care page before loading it. |
| Using one brand’s rule for another brand | Material names do not guarantee identical coatings or construction. | Compare each item’s material, dishwasher instruction, tools, chemicals, and cooling advice. |
Troubleshooting by symptom
Residue remains after one wash
Do not escalate immediately to an abrasive pad. Refill the cooled item with hot, soapy water, soak again, and wipe with a soft sponge. Hardened sugar, starch, and cheese often need time to soften rather than more force.
The pan is greasy after washing
Wash again with fresh warm water and dish soap, changing the sponge if it is saturated with oil. Inspect the rim and corners. If the manufacturer limits detergents or forbids abrasive cleaners, do not substitute a stronger chemical without written permission.

The surface looks dull
Stop using abrasive products and check whether the dullness is residue, mineral film, or coating wear. Clean gently according to the item’s guide. If the appearance is accompanied by scratches, peeling, or flaking, contact the manufacturer rather than polishing the surface.
The dish cracked or warped
Discontinue use of a cracked ceramic or stoneware piece and do not attempt a household repair for food contact. Record what happened, including whether the dish moved from a hot oven into cold water, and consult the manufacturer. A warped nonstick pan should likewise be removed from service if it no longer sits flat or the coating is damaged.
Care habits that reduce cleaning effort
- Use the pan only within its stated oven-temperature and preheating limits.
- Let food residue cool enough to handle, but do not leave acidic or sugary deposits sitting for extended periods when the care guide advises prompt washing.
- Use utensils that will not gouge a coating when serving or removing baked food.
- Keep ceramic pieces from knocking together in a cabinet; use separators if stacking creates contact at rims or handles.
- Store nonstick bakeware so metal pans and racks cannot rub across the cooking surface.
- Keep the manufacturer’s care page or model information with the bakeware so dishwasher decisions remain clear after packaging is discarded.
A practical comparison checklist for a mixed bakeware collection
If you own several pans, make a small care record for each one. Record these four fields:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- Surface: solid ceramic or stoneware, nonstick-coated metal, or ceramic-coated nonstick cookware.
- Dishwasher status: permitted, recommended against, or hand wash only according to the exact manufacturer instruction.
- Tools and chemicals: soft sponge or cloth, plus any expressly prohibited scrubbers or cleaners.
- Cooling and soaking: whether the guide warns about thermal shock and how it directs you to loosen stuck food.
This checklist prevents a common error: remembering that one casserole dish survived the dishwasher and assuming a coated metal loaf pan or ceramic nonstick skillet has the same construction. The correct routine follows the item, not the appearance.
When the manufacturer’s instructions are unavailable
Use the least aggressive reasonable method until you identify the product: allow the bakeware to cool, wash by hand in warm soapy water, use a soft sponge or cloth, and soak stubborn residue rather than scraping. Avoid bleach, oven cleaner, steel wool, nylon scouring pads, and unverified dishwasher cycles. Then search the maker’s current support page using the product line or model marking. If you still cannot establish dishwasher permission, continue hand washing; that choice avoids making an unsupported assumption about heat, detergent, or coating durability.
