The safest way to clean Bose QuietComfort ear cushions is to remove them, wipe both sides with a clean cloth that is only lightly dampened with diluted soapy water, and let them air-dry completely before reinstalling. Keep liquid away from the inner screen, ports, buttons and other openings. Clean at least weekly—especially after exercise—and replace the cushions when cracking, flattening, odor or loss of the acoustic seal affects comfort or noise cancellation.

What you need before starting

Bose’s cleaning guidance uses ordinary household supplies rather than a specialized kit. Gather the following:

  • A clean, soft cloth (microfiber is suitable) or paper towels
  • Warm water and a small amount of mild dish soap
  • Rubbing alcohol and a separate paper towel for the hard plastic exterior only
  • A soft-bristled toothbrush or electronics-cleaning brush
  • Tweezers, optional, for hair or lint sitting on the surface near an opening

Use a dry work surface with good lighting. Disconnect the headphones from charging and turn them off. Do not clean while the headset is connected to a charger, and do not place the headset or detached cushions in a sink, washing machine or other container of water.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Have a clean towel ready for the removed pads and enough open space to leave them undisturbed while they dry. If you are ordering replacements, identify the exact QuietComfort generation before removing anything. “QuietComfort” alone is not a sufficient compatibility check because Bose sells separate cushions for multiple generations.

Remove the cushions without stressing the earcups

Hold one earcup firmly and gently pull the top edge of its cushion away from the earcup. Work around the edge until the cushion’s mounting flange releases from the retaining tabs. Do not yank the cushion, twist the earcup, or press the center of the earcup. Repeat on the other side.

Set each cushion on a clean towel so it does not pick up grit. Removing the pads first lets you clean the front and back without forcing moisture toward the headphone’s inner screen. It also gives you a chance to inspect the foam, cover and mounting flange before deciding whether cleaning is enough.

Keep the left and right pieces oriented as you work, even though the cushions may look similar. Photographing the fit before removal can help if you are unfamiliar with the retaining tabs. Never pull against a cable, grille or internal screen, and stop if the flange appears to be tearing rather than releasing.

Clean the ear cushions step by step

1. Mix a mild cleaning solution

Put a small amount of dish soap in warm water. The cloth should be damp, not wet. Dip only part of the cloth, then wring it out thoroughly until no water can be squeezed from it. Excess liquid is the main risk: cushion foam can retain moisture, and liquid that migrates through the pad can reach the electronics when the cushion is reinstalled.

Do not add bleach, fabric softener, concentrated detergent, perfume or disinfectant spray. Bose’s method is diluted dish soap, not a chemical soak. A small batch is preferable because you can discard it rather than store a contaminated solution.

2. Wipe the outside surface

Use small, gentle circular motions over the cushion’s front surface, concentrating on areas that contact your skin. Do not scrub aggressively, use a stiff brush, or apply undiluted soap. Clean one section at a time so you can stop if the cover begins to shed, crease or separate.

For sunscreen, sweat film or skin oil, make several light passes instead of pressing harder. A heavily loaded cloth can spread residue around the pad, so refold it to expose a clean section. Avoid saturating stitching and seams; those areas can hold water longer than the surface suggests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Clean the rear and mounting edge

Turn the cushion over and use the same barely damp cloth on the back and the mounting flange. This removes sweat and skin-oil residue that can transfer to the earcup. Keep the cloth damp rather than wet as you move around seams and edges.

Inspect the flange while wiping. If it is split, stretched, or pulling away from the cover, cleaning will not restore a reliable attachment. Set that pad aside for replacement rather than repeatedly forcing it onto the earcup.

4. Air-dry completely

Place the cushions in a clean, ventilated area at room temperature. Leave them uncovered until the cover and foam feel completely dry. Do not use a hair dryer, radiator, clothes dryer or direct high heat; heat can deform foam and adhesives. Do not reinstall a cushion merely because its outer surface feels dry—the foam and flange must also be dry.

Turn the pads once during drying if one side remains cool or damp. There is no universal drying time because humidity, foam condition and the amount of water used vary. Waiting longer is safer than trapping residual moisture against the earcup. If the cushion still feels cool, tacky or heavy with moisture, it is not ready.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Repeat for the padded headband

The same wrung-out, soapy-water cloth can be used on the padded headband. Wipe in small sections, avoid saturating the padding, and let it dry before wearing the headphones. Keep the headband away from the earcup openings while cleaning so runoff cannot enter the electronics.

Do not bend the headband sharply to expose a hidden area. Support it with one hand and wipe with the other. Persistent discoloration may be permanent material wear rather than removable dirt; aggressive scrubbing can damage the covering without improving its appearance.

Bose describes this damp-cloth method in its headphone cleaning guide. The guide applies general care advice across Bose headphones; exact construction can differ by QuietComfort generation.

Clean the headphone body without getting moisture inside

Inner screen and acoustic openings

Keep the inner headphone screen dry. Bose warns that moisture on this screen could damage the electronics beneath it. If dust is visible, wipe the screen with a dry cloth only. Do not spray cleaner onto the screen, pour liquid into the earcup, or use a wet cotton swab around its perimeter.

Use only light contact on the screen. A brush or cloth forced through the grille can deform it or push debris inward. If a mark will not lift with a dry wipe, do not escalate to liquid; the screen protects components that are more difficult and expensive to replace than a cushion.

Hard plastic exterior

For fingerprints or grime on the hard plastic outside of the earcups, Bose says to put a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a paper towel and wipe the plastic. Apply the liquid to the towel—not directly to the headphones—and keep it away from cushion material, printed markings, seams and openings. Alcohol intended for the plastic exterior is not a recommendation to soak or wipe the fabric, leatherette or foam of the ear cushions.

Use a fresh, lightly moistened section of towel for each area, then let the plastic air-dry. Do not combine alcohol with soapy water on the same cloth. If your model has a coating, logo or painted detail, use minimal pressure and stop if the finish changes.

Charging port, buttons and seams

Use a soft-bristled brush to loosen buildup around the charging port, buttons and other external seams. Brush outward so debris leaves the opening instead of being pushed deeper. Tweezers may lift a visible strand of hair or a small piece of lint from the surface, but do not insert tweezers or any other tool into the port, microphone hole, grille or earcup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Never pour alcohol into a port or use compressed air aimed into the headset. A brush is for surface residue, not for probing. If debris is packed inside an opening and will not come out with gentle outward brushing, stop rather than risking damage.

What not to do when cleaning Bose pads

  • Do not machine-wash, hand-wash in a basin, wring, twist or soak the cushions.
  • Do not spray cleaner directly onto a pad, earcup, screen, button or port.
  • Do not use heat to speed drying.
  • Do not use rubbing alcohol on the cushion material; Bose limits that instruction to the hard plastic exterior.
  • Do not press the center of an earcup while removing or installing a scrim.
  • Do not push cotton swabs, toothpicks, tweezers or brushes into openings.
  • Do not reinstall a pad while any part of it remains damp.

These precautions address two different risks: damaging the electronics and damaging the pad’s shape or seal. A cushion can look clean yet perform poorly if its foam is compressed, its flange is distorted or its cover no longer seals against the earcup.

Reinstall only after everything is dry

Before fitting a cushion back on, check all four areas:

  • The cushion cover has no wet or cool-feeling patches.
  • The foam is not tacky, misshapen or still holding moisture.
  • The mounting flange is intact and free of loose fabric.
  • No water or cleaner has reached the inner screen or earcup opening.

Align the cushion with the earcup and press its mounting flange beneath the retaining tabs. Work around the entire circumference rather than forcing one section. A cushion that appears attached on one side can still leak sound or detach during use if part of the flange is outside a tab.

After installation, gently run a finger around the perimeter. The edge should feel even, without a lifted corner or folded flange. Do not test the fit by pulling hard; light handling is enough to reveal an unsecured section.

How often to clean QuietComfort cushions

Bose advises wiping headphones at least once a week, particularly after workouts. Sweat can reach the cushion foam and contribute to odor or discoloration. Weekly cleaning is general guidance, not a tested interval for every climate, skin type or QuietComfort model: clean sooner when the pads are visibly damp or dirty, and wipe them after unusually sweaty sessions.

Between full cleanings, let the headset air out instead of storing it immediately in a closed case while damp. Store it where the cushions are not compressed for long periods, and avoid sharing uncleaned cushions when possible. These habits reduce residue and help the foam recover its shape, but they cannot prevent normal wear.

If several people use the headset, inspect the pads more often because oils and sweat accumulate at different rates. A weekly wipe is a baseline, not a promise that every cushion will remain odor-free or last the same length of time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When cleaning is no longer enough

Ear cushions are both comfort components and part of the acoustic seal. Consider replacement when one or more of these conditions remains after cleaning and drying:

  • The cover is cracked, peeling, torn or separating from the flange.
  • The foam is permanently flattened, lumpy or no longer springs back.
  • Odor remains after thorough cleaning and complete drying.
  • The cushion slips, rotates or will not stay under the retaining tabs.
  • Outside noise enters more readily, bass changes, or active noise cancellation performs inconsistently because the seal is compromised.
  • One side is visibly more worn than the other, causing an uneven fit.

Bose states that, with proper care, ear cushions should last several years, but frequent use eventually wears them down. That is a general expectation rather than a guaranteed service life; sweat, storage, wearing time and handling can shorten or extend it. The practical test is the condition of the seal and comfort, not a fixed calendar date.

A clean-looking pad may still need replacement if it has lost its rebound or no longer contacts your head evenly. Conversely, minor surface discoloration alone does not automatically require a new kit if the cover, foam, comfort and seal remain sound.

Choose a replacement kit for the exact QuietComfort generation

QuietComfort cushions are not automatically interchangeable across every generation. Confirm the model name and, where available, the model number printed in the Bose app, on the headset, on its packaging or in the owner’s documentation before ordering. Bose’s accessory catalog separates kits for several families, including QuietComfort, QuietComfort 45, QuietComfort 35 and QuietComfort Ultra. Decision point What to verify Why it matters
Headphone generation Exact QuietComfort model, not merely the word “QuietComfort” Mounting geometry and scrim shape can differ between generations.
Contents Whether the package includes two cushions and two scrims Replacing only pads while leaving damaged or dirty scrims can compromise the result.
Color or finish Match the finish to your headset if appearance matters Listings may show more than one color, and availability can change.
Construction Original Bose or a third-party replacement, with the seller’s compatibility statement Do not assume a generic pad has the same flange, foam density or seal.
Price and availability Current price, stock, warranty and seller at the time of purchase These details are volatile and are not permanent specifications.

The current Bose listing for the QuietComfort Headphones Ear Cushion Kit describes a kit with two cushions and two scrims for that specific model. Its displayed price and availability can change, so verify them on the listing before buying. The listing is not evidence that the same kit fits QuietComfort 45, QuietComfort 35 or QuietComfort Ultra.

When comparing an original kit with a third-party option, check the model-generation statement, included scrims, color, seller, warranty and return policy. Bose’s listing establishes what its own kit contains, but it does not establish the durability, seal or value of third-party pads. Treat unusually low prices or vague “fits QuietComfort” language as reasons to verify, not proof of compatibility.

Install replacement cushions and scrims

Use Bose’s sequence rather than attaching the new cushions first:

  1. Remove the old cushions and then remove the old scrims (the thin screens beneath the pads).
  2. Identify the right earcup. Bose’s instructions use the power switch on the back to identify the right side.
  3. Place the scrim marked R in the right earcup, then place the left scrim in the opposite earcup.
  4. Do not press the center of the earcup while positioning a scrim; Bose warns that center pressure could damage electronics.
  5. Align the right cushion’s mounting flange with the right earcup and tuck the flange beneath each retaining tab.
  6. Repeat for the left cushion, checking that the flange is not folded or trapped on top of a tab.
  7. Press around the full outside edge for about 30 seconds. Bose says each earcup has ten tabs and all ten must lock for optimal performance, particularly noise cancellation.
  8. Run a finger around the perimeter to confirm there is no lifted section, then check that the cushion does not rotate or pull away with light handling.

You should hear or feel the cushion snap into place as the tabs engage. If a tab will not lock, remove the cushion and realign it instead of increasing force or pressing the earcup center.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bose specifically emphasizes that all ten tabs on each earcup need to be locked. One missed tab can be enough to create a leak, uneven pressure or a cushion that comes loose later. If a tab or flange is visibly damaged, stop installation and seek a model-matched replacement rather than using glue or tape.

Troubleshooting after cleaning or replacement

The cushion still smells

Make sure the foam—not only the surface—was allowed to dry fully. Repeat the gentle damp-cloth cleaning once, then air-dry longer in a ventilated room. Do not mask odor with perfume, essential oils or aerosol disinfectant; those liquids can remain in the foam and may irritate skin.

The headphones sound different or noise cancellation is weaker

First inspect the entire flange. A single unlocked tab can create an acoustic leak. Remove and reseat the cushion, pressing around all ten tabs and the full edge. Also check that the scrim is correctly positioned and that no moisture or debris is covering the inner screen. If the seal remains poor with a correctly matched, undamaged cushion, the issue may not be the pad itself and may require Bose support.

One cushion keeps coming loose

Remove it and inspect the mounting flange and the earcup tabs for tears, deformation or trapped fabric. A replacement pad cannot reliably lock if an earcup tab is damaged. Do not glue the cushion in place: adhesive can interfere with future service and alter the seal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The headset was accidentally splashed

Turn it off, disconnect it from power and remove the cushions if you can do so safely. Blot visible liquid with a dry cloth and leave the headset in a dry, ventilated place. Do not use heat, compressed air aimed into openings or a household vacuum nozzle pressed against the screen. Because Bose’s care guidance warns that moisture near the inner screen can damage electronics, seek model-specific support if liquid reached an opening or the headset later behaves abnormally.

  • Air-dry every padded part completely before reassembly.
  • Clean at least weekly, with extra attention after workouts.
  • Replace pads when wear affects comfort, fit or the acoustic seal.
  • Match the replacement kit to the precise QuietComfort generation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I wash Bose QuietComfort ear pads?

Do not soak or machine-wash them. Remove the cushions, wipe the front and back with a clean cloth lightly dampened with diluted dish soap, wring out excess water, and let the pads air-dry completely.

Can I use rubbing alcohol on the ear cushions?

Bose’s guidance places a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a paper towel for the hard plastic exterior. It does not direct you to apply alcohol to the cushion cover, foam or scrim.

How often should I clean QuietComfort ear cushions?

Bose advises wiping headphones at least weekly, especially after workouts. Clean sooner when sweat or dirt is visible, and allow the headset to air out before storing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I know whether QuietComfort pads need replacement?

Replace them when cracking, peeling, torn material, permanently flattened foam, persistent odor, an unstable flange or a degraded acoustic seal affects comfort, sound or noise cancellation. Bose says properly cared-for cushions may last several years, but frequent use eventually wears them.

Will QuietComfort 45 cushions fit every QuietComfort headset?

Do not assume that. Bose lists separate kits for QuietComfort, QuietComfort 45, QuietComfort 35, QuietComfort Ultra and other models. Verify the exact generation before purchasing.

Does the Bose replacement kit include the screens under the cushions?

The current Bose QuietComfort Headphones Ear Cushion Kit listing describes two cushions and two scrims. Confirm the contents on the listing for your exact model because package contents and availability can change.

Why is noise cancellation worse after installing new pads?

Check that the correct model-specific cushions and scrims are installed and that all ten retaining tabs on each earcup are locked. A lifted flange or misplaced scrim can break the acoustic seal. If the fit is correct and performance remains poor, contact Bose support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use tweezers to clean the charging port?

Tweezers may lift hair or lint sitting on the surface, but Bose cautions against pushing them inside the headphone. Use a soft-bristled brush with outward strokes and stop if debris is lodged inside.

The Bottom Line

Remove Bose QuietComfort cushions before cleaning, use only a wrung-out cloth with diluted dish soap, keep the inner screen and openings dry, and let every padded part dry completely. Clean at least weekly, replace pads when their comfort or acoustic seal has deteriorated, and use a kit matched to the exact QuietComfort generation.
