Detach the iPad Magic Keyboard, then wipe its front and inside with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. For disinfection, Apple permits a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes. Keep moisture out of openings, never submerge the keyboard, and don’t spray cleaner directly onto it.
The safest approach is deliberately restrained: use the least liquid that accomplishes the job, choose only the materials Apple names, and reserve Smart Connector cleaning for connection or input problems. These instructions apply to the iPad Magic Keyboard, not automatically to every Apple keyboard, case, or accessory.
Choose the right cleaning method
For everyday dirt or marks, use the slightly damp cloth method. If you specifically want to disinfect, use one of the wipe types Apple names for the iPad Magic Keyboard. These are different options: permission to use a particular disinfecting wipe does not mean that any household cleaner or liquid is suitable.

What you need before you start
For routine cleaning, gather a soft, lint-free cloth and only a small amount of moisture. A soft lint-free microfiber cloth is a suitable example of the type Apple describes; it is not a special Magic Keyboard accessory that you must buy. The cloth should be slightly damp rather than wet enough to drip or leave a film of liquid.
If disinfection is your goal, select either a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes. Apple names those wipe types specifically. Treat them as ready-to-use wipes, not as invitations to transfer the liquid into a bottle, spray it onto the keyboard, or pour it over a cloth until the cloth is saturated.
Do not add paper products or abrasive cloths to the kit. Apple’s general cleaning guidance cautions against both. There is no official requirement for a particular brand of microfiber cloth, a brush, a compressed-air can, a detergent, or a cleaning schedule in the cited instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesClean the keyboard step by step
- Detach it from the iPad. Apple’s first instruction is to remove the Magic Keyboard before cleaning. This separates the two products while you wipe and ensures that the keyboard-specific cleaning procedure is being followed on the keyboard itself.
- Choose one method. For routine dirt, use a soft, lint-free cloth that is only slightly damp. For disinfection, choose a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes. Do not combine products or substitute a different cleaner simply because it is labeled for electronics or household surfaces.
- Inspect the cloth or wipe. It should let you wipe the surface without dripping. The product instructions do not call for soaking the material, flooding a seam, or creating a pool of liquid. If the cleaning item is releasing excess liquid, it is not being used in the restrained way Apple describes.
- Wipe the front. Pass the cloth or permitted wipe over the exterior front surface. Use controlled strokes and avoid excessive wiping. The goal is to remove marks, not to repeatedly scrub one area.
- Wipe the inside. Clean the inside surface in the same careful manner. Keep the wipe or cloth under control around edges, seams, and openings. Apple’s instruction to wipe the front and inside does not change the requirement to keep moisture out of openings.
- Protect every opening. Do not spray cleaner directly onto the keyboard. Keep liquid from entering openings as you move around the surface. A wipe applied as a wipe is different from spraying or pouring liquid onto the product.
- Stop rather than soak. Never submerge the Magic Keyboard in water, alcohol, disinfectant, or any other cleaning agent. Immersion is outside Apple’s instructions even when the product being used is one of the named wipes.
- Finish without unnecessary passes. Apple’s general guidance says to avoid excessive wiping. Once the visible soil or the intended wipe-down is complete, stop instead of repeatedly rubbing the same area.
The sequence matters because it keeps the keyboard detached, limits liquid, and distinguishes ordinary cleaning from disinfection. It does not establish a mandatory interval for repeating the process; Apple’s keyboard directions do not specify a cleaning schedule.
Routine cleaning versus disinfection
Routine cleaning and disinfection answer different needs. A slightly damp lint-free cloth is the straightforward choice for ordinary marks and surface dirt. A 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes are the choices Apple permits when you specifically want to disinfect.
Do not read the disinfection permission as a broader approval of alcohol solutions, disinfectant sprays, or household products in general. The guidance identifies wipe options, and the same limits apply to both: detach the keyboard, keep moisture out of openings, do not spray directly, and do not submerge it.
Likewise, do not assume that a damp cloth should be used with detergent, glass cleaner, soap, or another additive. Apple’s product-specific direction is a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. Adding an unlisted chemical creates a different cleaning method from the one Apple describes.
How to use a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe safely
Apple permits a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe for the iPad Magic Keyboard. Use the wipe to clean the surface after detaching the keyboard. Keep the wipe moving over the front and inside without pressing liquid into openings.

The word “wipe” is important. Do not pour isopropyl alcohol into a container and dip the keyboard, spray alcohol from a bottle, or leave the keyboard sitting in a wet solution. Do not assume that a stronger concentration, a different alcohol product, or an alcohol-based household spray has the same approval. The cited instruction names a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe.
When the wipe-down is complete, avoid additional wet passes. Apple’s general advice is to avoid excessive wiping and to keep liquids away from openings. If you are also using a cloth, do not use it to spread extra liquid across the keyboard; the permitted wipe itself is the disinfection tool.
How to use Clorox Disinfecting Wipes safely
Clorox Disinfecting Wipes are the other named option in Apple’s Magic Keyboard cleaning instructions. Detach the keyboard, then use the wipe on the front and inside as a surface wipe. Keep it away from openings and never immerse the keyboard in the product.
This permission does not extend automatically to every Clorox formulation, a refill liquid, a spray, or another household disinfectant. The instruction is for Clorox Disinfecting Wipes. Do not wring liquid from a wipe onto the keyboard, pour disinfectant on a cloth and flood the surface, or spray the keyboard directly.
If you are not trying to disinfect, a slightly damp lint-free cloth is the simpler routine option. Choosing the wipe only when disinfection is intended reduces unnecessary chemical contact while staying within the product-specific guidance.
Clean the Smart Connector if the keyboard has connection or input problems
Cleaning the Smart Connector is a troubleshooting step, not a required part of every routine cleaning. If the Magic Keyboard does not connect or respond, Apple advises disconnecting it and cleaning the Smart Connector on both the keyboard and the iPad with a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Disconnect the Magic Keyboard. Separate it from the iPad before handling the connector areas.
- Clean the connector on the keyboard. Use a soft, lint-free cloth and wipe the Smart Connector carefully. The troubleshooting direction does not call for applying liquid.
- Clean the connector on the iPad. Wipe the Smart Connector on the back or edge of the iPad with the same type of cloth.
- Reconnect and test. The purpose of this cleaning is to address a connection or input symptom. Do not turn connector cleaning into a routine wet-cleaning step when the keyboard is working normally.
Apple includes this procedure in its Magic Keyboard connection troubleshooting guidance. It does not instruct users to spray, soak, scrape, or apply alcohol to either connector. Keep the connector cleaning dry and limited to the soft, lint-free cloth specified there.

Cleaners and materials to avoid
For this keyboard, Apple says not to use:
- Window cleaners
- Household cleaners
- Aerosol sprays
- Solvents
- Ammonia
- Abrasives
- Cleaners containing hydrogen peroxide
Apple’s general advice also cautions against spraying cleaning products directly onto an item, using abrasive cloths or paper products, and allowing moisture into openings. These warnings apply even if a product seems convenient or is marketed for another electronic surface.

An “electronics cleaner” label is not a substitute for Apple’s product-specific permission. The guidance does not say that every cleaner sold for screens, keyboards, plastic, leather, or household surfaces is safe for the iPad Magic Keyboard. If the product is not the slightly damp cloth, the 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe, or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes described above, do not present it as an approved alternative.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Cleaning while it is attached: Apple says to remove the Magic Keyboard from the iPad first. Detach it before the cloth or wipe touches the surface.
- Using a soaking-wet cloth: The routine instruction is for a slightly damp cloth, not a saturated one. Excess liquid increases the chance that moisture will reach an opening.
- Spraying cleaner onto the surface: Apple’s general guidance says not to spray cleaning product directly onto an item. Use the permitted wipe as a wipe.
- Pouring or soaking disinfectant: A named disinfecting wipe is not permission to pour its liquid onto the keyboard or immerse the keyboard in cleaning agent.
- Using a generic household or window cleaner: These are among the cleaner categories Apple says to avoid.
- Choosing ammonia, solvent, abrasive, or hydrogen-peroxide cleaner: Apple specifically lists these categories as unsuitable for this product.
- Using paper towels or rough cloth: Apple’s general advice cautions against paper products and abrasive cloths. Use a soft, lint-free cloth instead.
- Scrubbing repeatedly: Apple advises avoiding excessive wiping. Controlled passes are preferable to aggressive, repeated rubbing.
- Submerging the keyboard: Do not immerse it in water, alcohol, disinfectant, or any other cleaning agent.
- Cleaning the connectors during every session: Reserve connector cleaning for connection or input troubleshooting, and use a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Assuming every Apple keyboard has identical care rules: These instructions concern the iPad Magic Keyboard. They do not automatically cover the separate Mac Magic Keyboard, another iPad keyboard, or another case.
- Leaving it pressed against another material for a long time: Apple warns that prolonged contact with other materials can cause color transfer. The guidance does not identify specific materials, colors, or exposure times, so avoid prolonged contact rather than guessing at a safe duration.
Color transfer and everyday contact
Apple cautions that prolonged contact with other materials can cause color transfer. This is an appearance and contact warning, not a cleaning recipe. Keep the keyboard from remaining in prolonged contact with other materials when practical, and do not claim that a particular fabric, color, or number of hours is safe because Apple does not specify those details.
If color transfer or a mark appears, begin with the approved routine method: detach the keyboard and use a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth on the front and inside. Do not escalate automatically to a solvent, abrasive, household cleaner, or hydrogen-peroxide product; Apple lists those categories to avoid.
A simple decision guide
There are ordinary marks: Detach the keyboard and use a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. Wipe the front and inside, keep openings dry, and avoid excessive passes.
You specifically need disinfection: Detach the keyboard and choose a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes. Use it as a wipe, not a spray or poured liquid, and do not submerge the keyboard.
The keyboard will not connect or respond: Disconnect it, then clean the Smart Connector on the keyboard and on the back or edge of the iPad with a soft, lint-free cloth. This is the troubleshooting procedure; it is not a reason to apply liquid to the connectors.
You are considering another cleaner: Check it against Apple’s avoid list. Window and household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, ammonia, abrasives, and hydrogen-peroxide cleaners are not recommended for this keyboard. When the product is outside the named options, do not treat it as approved.
Care expectations and product scope
Apple’s instructions tell you what to use and what to avoid, but they do not establish a cleaning frequency. Clean when the keyboard needs attention rather than presenting a daily, weekly, or monthly interval as an official recommendation. There is also no stated damage rate, performance claim, or required accessory in the cited guidance.

A soft lint-free microfiber cloth is an optional generic supply that fits Apple’s description. It is not a Magic Keyboard-specific purchase requirement. The named disinfecting wipes are likewise options for the disinfection use case, not a requirement for routine care and not an endorsement of a particular retailer or listing.
Keep the advice product-specific. The iPad Magic Keyboard may not share the same materials or cleaning directions as Apple’s Mac Magic Keyboard, a Magic Keyboard Folio, a Smart Keyboard, a Smart Keyboard Folio, or a third-party iPad case. Verify the applicable instructions for another product instead of transferring this procedure by assumption.
