Take the phone out of the case before cleaning. For a silicone, clear, polycarbonate, or thermoplastic polyurethane case, wipe the inside and outside with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth and avoid household cleaners, solvents, ammonia, abrasives, aerosols, and hydrogen-peroxide cleaners. For a natural-leather case, use a clean cloth with warm water and mild hand soap sparingly; cleaning can change the color, and leather cleaners or conditioners can do the same. Always check the case maker’s instructions first, because Apple’s guidance applies to its own cases rather than every leather finish or silicone formulation.
Identify the case material before you clean it
Cleaning advice depends on both the material and its finish. A case that feels rubbery may be silicone, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), or another elastomer. A case described as leather may be natural leather, coated leather, synthetic leather, or a composite with a leather surface. Those constructions can react differently to water, soap, oils, and solvents.
Look at the packaging, the product page, or the maker’s care label. If the instructions conflict with a general method in this guide, follow the maker’s instructions. The detailed method below reflects Apple’s published care guidance for its own silicone, clear, polycarbonate, TPU, and natural-leather iPhone cases; it is not a universal test of all cases.

Prepare safely before either method
- Remove the phone completely. Do not clean a case while it is fitted around the phone. Take out cards, inserts, decorative pieces, and any accessory that can be removed without force.
- Work on a clean, dry surface. A table with good light helps you see grit that could scratch a clear panel or rub into leather.
- Read the case maker’s instructions. Apple’s material-specific directions concern Apple cases. A third-party case may have a different coating, adhesive, printed design, or leather finish.
- Use a clean cloth. A cloth that contains grit, polish, or residue can spread the soil you are trying to remove. Keep separate cloths for leather and for general household cleaning.
- Keep liquids controlled. Apple’s general product guidance advises against excessive wiping, keeping moisture out of openings, and spraying cleaning products directly onto a product. Apply moisture to the cloth as directed, never as a spray onto the case.
- Inspect before you start. If the case is peeling, cracked, delaminating, or has exposed adhesive, cleaning may worsen the damage. Remove loose debris gently and decide whether replacement is safer than wet cleaning.
How to clean a silicone, clear, polycarbonate, or TPU case
Apple’s method for these case materials is deliberately restrained: a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth on both the outside and inside after the iPhone has been removed. The aim is to lift ordinary dirt without introducing chemicals that can attack a finish or leave residue.

Step-by-step method
- Take the iPhone out of the case. Set the phone aside away from the damp cloth and any loosened dirt.
- Remove loose grit first. Turn the empty case over and shake or gently brush away particles. Do not grind visible grit across a clear or glossy surface.
- Dampen a soft, lint-free cloth slightly. It should be damp, not dripping. Do not pour water into the case or immerse it.
- Wipe the exterior. Use light, even passes over the back, sides, camera cutout, buttons, and corners. Avoid aggressive, repeated rubbing in one spot.
- Wipe the interior. Dirt inside the case can rub against the phone, so clean the lining and inner corners with the same slightly damp cloth.
- Use a dry portion of the cloth to remove remaining moisture. Check seams, button covers, and cutouts for trapped dampness.
- Let the case become fully dry before reinstalling the phone. Keep it in a clean place while it dries naturally. Do not put the phone back into a damp case.
Cleaners Apple says to avoid
For Apple’s silicone, clear, polycarbonate, and TPU iPhone cases, do not use window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, ammonia, abrasives, or cleaners containing hydrogen peroxide. These categories include products that may look mild but contain strong solvents, polishing particles, or oxidizing ingredients. A product being marketed as a “multi-surface” or “disinfecting” cleaner does not make it suitable for the case.
- Do not spray cleaner directly onto the case.
- Do not soak or submerge the case.
- Do not scrub with a rough sponge, scouring pad, melamine-style abrasive, or stiff brush.
- Do not use an unverified alcohol mixture or specialty kit simply because it is sold for electronics.
What to do about oily marks and stubborn dirt
Start with the same slightly damp lint-free cloth and several gentle passes. If a mark remains, stop and check the maker’s instructions rather than escalating to a solvent or abrasive. Persistent discoloration may be a change in the material or finish, not removable surface dirt. Stronger chemicals can turn a temporary mark into permanent clouding, tackiness, fading, or a damaged coating.
How to clean and care for a natural-leather case
Apple describes its leather iPhone case as natural leather and warns that cleaning may affect its color. Its suggested gentle method is a clean cloth with warm water and mild hand soap. Apple also mentions using a mild cleaner with a dry, clean cloth. Neither instruction guarantees that a particular stain will come out or that the original color will return.

Step-by-step leather cleaning
- Remove the phone and accessories. Cleaning around a fitted phone risks transferring moisture or soap into the device and makes it harder to reach the case’s inside.
- Check the finish and condition. Note the current color, printed details, edge paint, and any worn or cracked areas. If the maker specifies a particular finish, use that instruction instead of assuming all leather is alike.
- Prepare a small amount of warm water and mild hand soap. Keep the mixture restrained; the cloth should carry only enough moisture to clean the surface, not saturate it.
- Moisten a clean cloth and wring it out well. Work with a barely damp cloth. Test an inconspicuous area first if the maker permits cleaning but does not state how the finish reacts.
- Wipe gently in small sections. Lift dirt with light strokes rather than scrubbing. Pay attention to edges and corners, where grime collects, but avoid prolonged rubbing that can alter the finish.
- Remove surface residue with a clean, barely damp section of cloth. Do not leave soap sitting on the leather.
- Allow the case to dry naturally. Keep it away from direct heat and intense sunlight while it dries. Refit the phone only when the case is completely dry.
Why leather can change even when you do nothing wrong
Natural leather develops a patina as it is handled and exposed to its surroundings. Apple notes that skin oils and direct sunlight can change the color over time. Cleaning can also affect color, and leather cleaners or conditioners can change it as well. A darker, lighter, or more varied appearance is therefore not automatically evidence that the cleaning failed.
Exposures that can stain or damage leather
- Water: Contact can leave marks, especially when moisture reaches only part of the surface.
- Oil: Skin oils and oily substances can darken or stain tanned leather.
- Makeup: Pigments and oils may transfer to the case.
- Dyed materials: Apple specifically names denim as an example of a dyed material that can stain tanned leathers.
- Sunlight, heat, and humidity: Apple advises avoiding prolonged intense sunlight, heat, and humidity for its leather case.
Treat these as prevention guidance, not a promise that every stain can be removed. Once a dye or oil has penetrated a finish, stronger cleaning can create a larger color change than the original mark.
Leather products: use caution
A leather cleaner or conditioner is not automatically safer than mild soap and water. Apple explicitly warns that leather cleaners and conditioners can change the color of its case. Use one only when the case maker identifies it as compatible with that exact finish, and follow the product directions. Do not assume a product intended for boots, furniture, automotive upholstery, or another leather finish belongs on a phone case.

Products and techniques to avoid
The safest boundary is the one supported by the case maker. For Apple’s non-leather cases, that means avoiding the named chemical and abrasive categories. For Apple’s leather case, it means recognizing that even an intended leather product can alter color. The following shortcuts are especially risky when the case instructions do not authorize them:
- Alcohol or solvent wipes: The supplied Apple case guidance does not establish them as safe for these materials. Do not infer compatibility from their use on other electronics.
- Bleach, hydrogen-peroxide cleaners, and disinfectant sprays: Hydrogen-peroxide cleaners are specifically excluded for Apple’s silicone, clear, polycarbonate, and TPU cases.
- Window and household cleaners: Apple lists these among the products to avoid for its non-leather cases.
- Abrasive powders and pads: They can dull clear plastics, remove coatings, or roughen leather.
- Direct spraying: Liquid can pool in seams and openings and is harder to control than moisture applied to a cloth.
- Soaking and machine washing: The cited guidance calls for wiping, not immersion or laundering. Water can reach adhesives, linings, edge paint, and layered construction.
- High heat: Hair dryers, radiators, and hot cars can accelerate drying unevenly and may deform synthetic materials or stress leather finishes.
Cleaning inside, around openings, and at the edges
The inside deserves attention because trapped grit can abrade the phone and because residue often collects around button covers and cutouts. Use the same controlled cloth method as the exterior. Keep liquid away from speaker, charging, camera, and microphone openings in the case and, most importantly, away from the phone itself.
For a case with a fabric, microfiber, painted, flocked, or adhesive-backed lining, do not assume the outer-material method is suitable for the lining. Check the maker’s instructions. If no instructions exist, use the least-moist approach that can remove the dirt and stop if the lining begins to lift, shed, or transfer color.

After-cleaning checks and troubleshooting
The case is still damp
Leave the phone out. Blot visible moisture with a dry, clean cloth and allow the case to air-dry away from direct heat. Reinstalling the phone before the case is dry traps moisture against both surfaces.
The case looks cloudy or streaked
Stop using chemicals and abrasives. Wipe once with a clean, slightly damp lint-free cloth if the material is a silicone, clear, polycarbonate, or TPU case, then dry it. Clouding that remains may be a finish change rather than residue. Further rubbing can make it worse.
The leather color changed
Color change is a stated possibility for Apple’s natural-leather case. Do not try to “correct” it with alcohol, bleach, abrasive rubbing, or an unapproved conditioner. Compare the result with the maker’s care guidance and accept that patina or cleaning-related change may be permanent.

A stain remains
Do not escalate automatically. Record what contacted the case, when it happened, and what material and finish it has. Ask the case maker for finish-specific advice. A persistent stain may be embedded, while aggressive treatment may spread it or remove surrounding color.
The case has become sticky, cracked, or loose
Discontinue cleaning and inspect the material. A damaged or degraded case may no longer protect the phone reliably. If the surface, seams, or button covers are failing, replacement can be safer than repeated chemical treatment.
A practical care routine
No official frequency or lifespan statistic is established for this care question, so clean based on visible soil and the case maker’s instructions rather than a fixed schedule. A simple routine reduces the need for aggressive cleaning:
- Remove the phone whenever you perform a full case cleaning.
- Wipe visible dirt early with the material-appropriate method.
- Keep leather away from prolonged intense sunlight, heat, humidity, water, oil, makeup, and dyed fabrics such as denim.
- Store a spare case or the cleaned case away from grit while it dries.

What the manufacturer guidance does—and does not—establish
Apple’s published instructions provide a practical method for Apple’s own cases: controlled wiping for silicone, clear, polycarbonate, and TPU, and cautious mild-soap cleaning for its natural-leather case. They also establish important limits: chemicals and abrasives can be inappropriate, leather color can change, and environmental exposure can stain or alter leather.
They do not establish a universal cleaner, a guaranteed stain-removal technique, a recommended cleaning interval, a case lifespan, or a success rate. They also do not prove that every third-party silicone formulation, leather finish, lining, print, adhesive, or coating behaves the same way. When the case maker’s instructions are available, those instructions are the controlling source.
