Let the air fryer and basket cool completely, then wash the removable parts with warm or hot water, mild dishwashing liquid, and a soft, non-scratch sponge. Soak stuck food instead of scraping it, keep metal and abrasive tools away from coated surfaces, rinse thoroughly, and dry before reassembly. Use a dishwasher only when your exact model’s manual or product page says the part is dishwasher-safe.
That method reflects current manufacturer guidance, but coatings and dishwasher ratings vary between models. The safest routine is therefore gentle hand washing unless your own documentation explicitly permits another method.
Why the cleaning method matters
An air fryer basket is exposed to oil, heat and acidic or sugary food residue. Its coating helps food release and makes cleanup easier, but hard tools and abrasive pads can scratch or wear that surface. Philips warns that metal utensils and abrasive cleaning materials may damage the non-stick coating. COSORI likewise cautions against metal scouring pads and recommends ordinary household cleaning supplies rather than specialty chemicals.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assume that every basket uses the same finish. Philips says its air-fryer parts are mostly coated with non-stick PTFE, while COSORI notes that coating materials vary by model. Treat the instructions supplied with your appliance as the authority for materials, cleaners and dishwasher use.

What to do before you wash the basket
Switch off and wait for the appliance to cool
Turn the air fryer off, unplug it if your manual instructs you to do so, and wait until the basket and pan are safe to handle. Philips advises approximately 30 minutes of cooling before cleaning; COSORI also says to cool the appliance first. A hot coated surface is easier to damage and can make hot water splatter.
Separate removable parts
Remove the outer basket, inner pan and crisper plate or insert if your model has one. Cleaning each piece separately lets water reach the underside, corners and ventilation grooves. Do not immerse the electrical appliance or heating unit unless the manual specifically says that a part is washable.
Prepare only gentle supplies
- Warm or hot water, as permitted by your model’s instructions.
- Mild dishwashing liquid or washing-up liquid.
- A soft, non-scratch sponge.
- A soft-bristle brush for grooves and tight corners.
- A clean towel or drying rack.
You do not need a specialist product for the routine method described by COSORI. The key safety factor is the tool’s surface, not a powerful chemical.
Step-by-step: the safest everyday hand wash
- Cool the fryer completely. Do not begin while the basket is hot. Use the approximately 30-minute period in Philips’ instructions as a reference, then follow the timing in your own manual if it differs.
- Remove the basket and insert. Separate the pieces so water and detergent can reach all food-contact surfaces. Keep the appliance body and electrical components out of the sink.
- Wet the parts with warm or hot water. Add a small amount of mild dishwashing liquid. Philips specifies hot water and washing-up liquid; COSORI recommends warm, soapy water.
- Wipe with a soft sponge. Use light pressure and short strokes. Let the detergent loosen grease rather than trying to scour the surface clean in one pass.
- Soak stuck residue. If food remains attached, fill the pan or basket with hot water and detergent and leave it for five to ten minutes, the soaking time Philips specifies for residue stuck to its pan. Do not use a knife, fork or metal scraper to speed up the process.
- Work on grooves with a soft brush. COSORI’s cleaning guidance allows a soft-bristle brush for crevices. Brush gently, following the shape of the grooves instead of forcing bristles into the coating.
- Use a model-specific stubborn-grease treatment only when documented. COSORI’s FAQ suggests a bicarbonate-of-soda paste for stubborn grease, with a 15-minute dwell before rinsing. That is COSORI guidance, not a universal instruction for every coating; check your own manual before applying any paste.
- Rinse until no soap remains. Run clean water over every surface, including the underside and the junction between the basket and pan. Soap left behind can affect the next cooking cycle.
- Dry completely. Towel-dry or leave the parts on a rack until all visible moisture is gone. Pay attention to seams and holes before putting the pieces back together.
- Reassemble only after drying. Fit the crisper plate and basket as the manual shows. A dry, correctly seated insert prevents trapped water from remaining in the assembly.
Tools and products: what is safe and what can damage the finish
| Item or method | Use it? | Reason and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Warm or hot water | Yes | Recommended in Philips and COSORI cleaning guidance; use the temperature allowed by your model. |
| Mild dishwashing liquid | Yes | Philips specifies washing-up liquid and COSORI recommends warm, soapy water. |
| Soft, non-scratch sponge | Yes | Both manufacturers identify a soft sponge as the normal cleaning tool. |
| Soft-bristle brush | Generally suitable | COSORI lists one for grooves and crevices; use light pressure and check your manual. |
| Five-to-ten-minute soak | Yes for the cited Philips pan | Philips specifies this interval for stuck residue on its pan; other models may give different limits. |
| Bicarbonate-of-soda paste | Model-specific | COSORI’s FAQ suggests a 15-minute dwell for stubborn grease. Do not treat that instruction as universal. |
| Metal utensils or a metal scraper | No | Philips warns that metal utensils can damage the non-stick coating. |
| Steel wool or metal scouring pad | No | These are abrasive; COSORI specifically warns against metal scouring pads. |
| Other abrasive cleaners or pads | No unless the manual explicitly approves them | Philips warns against abrasive cleaning materials because they may damage the coating. |
How to remove different kinds of stuck food
Thin grease film
Start with warm water, mild detergent and a soft sponge. Give the detergent time to dissolve the film, then rinse and dry. Increasing pressure or switching to a rough pad adds risk without addressing the cause of the film.
Food bonded to the bottom
Use the soak-first approach. Philips’ published instructions call for five to ten minutes in hot water and detergent for residue stuck to its pan. After soaking, lift softened material with the sponge. Repeat the soak if necessary rather than scraping harder.
Residue in slots and corners
Use a soft-bristle brush, as described in COSORI’s guide, to reach grooves and crevices. Keep the brush soft and avoid twisting a rigid object against an edge. Rinse from several angles so loosened particles leave the holes instead of settling elsewhere.

Persistent grease after soaking
If you own a COSORI model, its FAQ offers a bicarbonate-of-soda paste and a 15-minute wait before rinsing. Because coating materials differ, use that treatment only when it is compatible with your model’s instructions. If your manual does not address it, return to repeated warm-water soaks and a soft sponge rather than experimenting with harsher cleaners.
Dishwasher or hand washing?
Dishwasher safety is a model-by-model question, not a universal property of air-fryer baskets. Read the manual or the exact product page for the basket, pan and insert you own. The appliance body itself should not be placed in a dishwasher unless the manufacturer explicitly identifies it as dishwasher-safe.
| Choice | When it is appropriate | Coating-care consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Hand wash | Always the fallback when the manual is unclear; also suitable for routine cleaning. | COSORI recommends handwashing to help prolong coating life, even though many of its baskets are dishwasher-safe. |
| Dishwasher | Only when the exact model’s manual or product page confirms that the removable part is dishwasher-safe. | Follow the manufacturer’s loading and detergent instructions. Permission for one model does not establish permission for another. |
| Soak before either method | When food is stuck on and a normal wash does not remove it. | Softening residue reduces the temptation to scrape the coating. |
What the manufacturer examples show
Philips says the basket, pan and insert covered by its cited guidance are dishwasher-safe. That statement applies to those specified parts, not automatically to every Philips air fryer or every accessory.
COSORI says most of its baskets are dishwasher-safe but directs owners to verify the rating on the product page or in the manual. Its FAQ still recommends handwashing as a way to help the coating last longer. This is why a dishwasher can be permitted yet not be the preferred everyday option.
If you choose the dishwasher
- Confirm the exact model and removable part are listed as dishwasher-safe.
- Remove loose food first so it does not bake onto the surface during the cycle.
- Place the part as the manual directs, keeping coated surfaces from being struck by other utensils.
- Use only the detergent and cycle guidance supplied for your model.
- Allow the part to cool after the cycle, then inspect, rinse if needed and dry completely before reassembly.
If the manual is missing, model identification is uncertain or the product page is ambiguous, hand wash instead. Uncertainty is a reason to avoid the dishwasher, not a reason to assume approval.

- Do not clean while the fryer is hot. Cooling is the first step in both Philips and COSORI guidance.
- Do not attack residue with metal. A knife, fork, metal spatula or scraper can damage the coating even if it removes food quickly.
- Do not use steel wool or a metal scouring pad. Their abrasive fibers can scratch coated surfaces.
- Do not assume a dishwasher rating. Ratings differ by model and by removable part.
- Do not reassemble while wet. Dry the basket, pan and insert thoroughly first.
- Do not introduce an unapproved cleaner. If the manual does not mention a chemical, stay with mild detergent, water and soft tools.
A practical routine that protects the coating
After each cooking cycle
Once the appliance has cooled, remove the basket and deal with visible grease or crumbs before they harden. A quick wash with warm, soapy water and a soft sponge is gentler than waiting for several layers of baked-on residue to accumulate.
When food will not release immediately
Stop applying force. Fill the affected part with hot water and mild detergent, wait for the documented soak period, then try the soft sponge again. For the Philips pan guidance, that period is five to ten minutes. For a COSORI model, the documented bicarbonate-paste option has a 15-minute dwell for stubborn grease.
Before storing the appliance
Check that the basket, pan and insert are clean, dry and correctly fitted. Moisture trapped in a groove or under an insert is easy to miss, so inspect those areas before storage.
How to identify the correct instructions
Look for the model number on the appliance, rating label or original documentation before deciding how to wash a part. A brand-wide statement such as “most baskets are dishwasher-safe” does not replace the listing for your specific model. Confirm whether the instruction applies to the outer basket, the pan, the crisper plate or all three; removable parts can have different ratings.
Also check whether the manual distinguishes between a coated food-contact surface and an uncoated component. The same cleaning tool may be harmless on a plain exterior but damaging on a non-stick insert. When the wording is unclear, use the least aggressive option: cool the part, soak it in warm water with mild detergent, use a soft sponge, rinse and dry.
Choosing between hand washing and the dishwasher
Hand washing takes more direct effort but gives you control over water temperature, contact time and pressure. It is the safer choice when the model is unknown, when the manual is unavailable, or when you want to follow COSORI’s preference for helping prolong coating life.

A dishwasher can save time when the exact documentation approves it. That approval is specific to the listed model and part. Before loading, remove loose residue and keep the coated surface from knocking against metal utensils. If the manual gives no loading or detergent instructions, do not fill in the gaps with assumptions; hand wash instead.

For either method, stuck food should be softened first. A short soak reduces the effort needed during hand washing and keeps you from scraping. If a dishwasher cycle does not remove a bonded spot, let the part cool, soak it as the manual allows and use the soft sponge rather than a sharp tool.
What to do when a spot remains
- Stop and check that the part has cooled.
- Rinse away loose crumbs.
- Apply warm or hot water and mild dishwashing liquid.
- Leave the Philips-style pan soak for five to ten minutes when that interval applies to your model.
- Wipe with a soft sponge; use a soft-bristle brush only in grooves and corners.
- Repeat the gentle soak instead of increasing pressure.
- Rinse thoroughly and dry before inspecting the surface again.
For COSORI owners, the FAQ’s bicarbonate-of-soda paste option has a 15-minute dwell for stubborn grease. Use it only when your model’s instructions support that treatment. A different coating or an unlisted cleaner is a reason to stay with water, mild detergent and soft tools.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the coating-care advice seems inconsistent
Manufacturer instructions can appear to offer two different messages: a part may be labeled dishwasher-safe, while hand washing is recommended to help preserve the coating. These statements are not necessarily contradictory. “Dishwasher-safe” means the manufacturer permits that cleaning method for the specified part; a hand-washing recommendation expresses a preference for longer-term coating care.
Resolve conflicts in this order:
- Exact model manual: follow its cleaning, temperature and dishwasher instructions.
- Exact model product page: use it to verify the rating when the manual is unavailable; COSORI specifically directs owners there.
- General brand guidance: use it for broad principles such as cooling, mild detergent, soft sponges and avoiding abrasives, but do not substitute another model’s rating.
Quick checklist
- Cool the air fryer and removable parts completely.
- Separate the basket, pan and crisper plate.
- Use warm or hot water, mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge.
- Soak stuck food instead of scraping; Philips specifies five to ten minutes for residue on its cited pan.
- Use a soft-bristle brush only for grooves and crevices, with light pressure.
- Use COSORI’s bicarbonate-paste method only when it applies to your model; its FAQ specifies a 15-minute dwell.
- Never use metal utensils, steel wool, metal scouring pads or abrasive cleaning materials on coated parts.
- Rinse away all detergent.
- Dry every part fully before reassembly.
- Use a dishwasher only when your exact manual or product page confirms compatibility; handwashing is the coating-preserving preference in COSORI’s guidance.

What should I do if I do not know the basket’s coating or dishwasher rating?
Use the least aggressive method: let it cool, wash with warm water and mild detergent, use a soft sponge, rinse and dry. Do not assume a coating type or dishwasher approval; identify the model and check its documentation.
The Bottom Line
Cool the fryer first, separate the removable parts, and use warm water, mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Soak stuck food for the documented interval instead of scraping, keep metal and abrasive tools away, rinse and dry completely, and use a dishwasher only when your exact model’s instructions approve it. When in doubt, gentle hand washing is the safer choice for the coating.
