Turn the robot vacuum off before maintenance, remove hair and debris from its brushes, clean the filter only in the way its manual permits, wipe sensor windows with a dry cloth, and clean the robot and dock contacts without liquid or abrasive tools. The owner’s manual for your exact model is the final authority because removable parts, filter washability, dock-power precautions, and replacement schedules differ.

What you need before cleaning

Gather a clean, dry microfiber cloth, a waste bin, and the cleaning tool supplied with the robot if it has one. A soft-bristle brush can help remove loose particles from a filter or brush area when the manual allows it. Keep scissors available only for cutting wrapped hair from a brush roll, and use them with the blades away from rubber rollers, bristles, bearings, wheels, and wiring.

Read the manual before opening a cover or pulling out a component. Look for the sections covering the main brush, side brushes, dustbin, filter, sensors, charging contacts, and docking station. Manuals show the release tabs and orientation of parts that may look interchangeable but are not. They also identify whether a filter is washable and whether the dock must be unplugged for contact cleaning.

Power down safely

  1. End the current cleaning run and wait for the robot to stop moving.
  2. Switch the robot off using the model’s power control, then place it on a stable, well-lit surface with the underside accessible.
  3. If you will clean the charging contacts or dock pins, follow the model manual’s dock instruction. Some instructions, including the ECOVACS N10 guidance, call for unplugging the docking station first; that is not a universal rule for every model.
  4. Keep water, sprays, and damp tools away from openings, motors, sensors, batteries, and electrical contacts.

Do not maintain a robot while it is running, charging, or able to start a scheduled cleaning cycle. A powered-down robot is easier to hold securely and less likely to move while you work.

How to clean the main brush and brush cavity

Remove the brush correctly

  1. Turn the robot over only after it is switched off.
  2. Release the brush cover using the tabs or fasteners shown in the manual.
  3. Lift out the main brush and note the direction of any end caps, bearings, or keyed shafts. Taking a quick photo before removal can help you reinstall the parts in the same orientation.

Never force a cover or twist a brush against resistance. A component that will not release may have a hidden latch or may not be intended for user removal.

Remove wrapped hair and fibers

Pull away hair, thread, carpet fibers, and other material wrapped around the brush. Work from the ends toward the center so you do not pull debris deeper into a bearing. Use the supplied cleaning tool’s blade or hook if the manual provides one. If scissors are necessary, make short cuts through the hair only, keeping the blades clear of the rubber roller, bristles, and end caps.

Inspect both brush ends. Hair commonly collects around the bearing or cap where it is less visible, and that buildup can increase resistance even when the center of the roller looks clean. Remove the cap only if the manual says it is serviceable; otherwise, clear material from the exposed area without prying.

Clear the intake and cover

Use your fingers, the cleaning tool, or a dry soft brush to remove debris from the brush cavity and the opening that leads to the dustbin. Wipe the inside of the cover with a dry cloth. Do not pour water into the cavity or use a spray near the motor and drive components.

Reinstall and check movement

Replace the brush in the orientation shown by the manual, refit both ends, and snap the cover closed. Rotate the brush gently by hand if the design permits. It should turn without a hard spot, scraping, or a wad of trapped hair. If the brush is cracked, permanently deformed, missing bristles, or still binds after cleaning, use a model-compatible replacement rather than forcing it to run.

How to clean side brushes

Side brushes sweep dirt from edges into the robot’s intake, so hair often winds around their hub and screws. Remove each side brush only through the method specified for your model. Some use a retaining screw; others pull off after a release action.

  1. Lift or remove the side brush and clear hair from every bristle and the central hub.
  2. Check the underside for fibers caught around the shaft or mounting point.
  3. Wipe the brush and the mounting area with a dry cloth.
  4. Reinstall the brush firmly, making sure it sits flat and does not wobble.

Do not bend bristles back into shape with heat or soak a brush unless the manual expressly permits washing. A bent or split brush can sweep poorly and may strike furniture or become detached during a run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can you wash a robot vacuum filter?

Only if the manual for the exact robot and filter identifies it as washable. Filter appearance is not proof of washability: two filters can look similar while using different media, adhesives, or frames. Roborock’s maintenance guidance notes that only some filters, commonly certain plastic or foam types, can be washed. Treat every unverified filter as non-washable.

For a non-washable or unverified filter

  1. Remove the dustbin and filter according to the manual.
  2. Empty loose dust over a waste bin.
  3. Tap the filter gently against the side of the bin. Do not strike it hard enough to crack the frame or deform the filter media.
  4. If permitted, use a clean, soft-bristle brush to lift remaining particles. Brush away from your face and avoid damaging pleats or mesh.
  5. Inspect the frame and seal before reinstalling.

Do not use compressed air unless the manual specifically approves it. A strong blast can drive fine dust deeper into the media or release particles into the room.

For a filter the manual identifies as washable

  1. Remove loose dust first so you do not turn a heavy layer of debris into sludge.
  2. Rinse it only by the method and direction stated in the manual. Do not add detergent unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it.
  3. Shake off excess water and place the filter where air can circulate freely.
  4. Wait until the filter is completely dry throughout, including the frame and seams.
  5. Reinstall it only when no cool, damp areas remain.

Never reinstall a damp filter. Moisture can damage the vacuum, promote odors, and restrict airflow. If the filter was washed accidentally and you cannot verify that it is fully dry, leave it out longer and consult the manual before operating the robot.

When to replace a filter

Replace the filter when the manual’s schedule says to do so or when the part is torn, crushed, permanently clogged, has a damaged seal, or remains dirty after the permitted cleaning method. Replacement timing is model-dependent; there is no reliable interval that applies to every robot vacuum. Verify the exact model number before ordering a replacement because filters that look alike may not seal correctly.

How to clean robot vacuum sensors

Sensors help the robot navigate, detect edges, avoid obstacles, and return to its dock. Their windows can collect dust, but they are delicate and should be cleaned with a dry method unless the model manual says otherwise.

  1. With the robot powered off, locate the sensor windows shown in the manual. Depending on the design, these may be on the front, sides, underside, or top turret.
  2. Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth to wipe each window gently.
  3. Use a dry cotton swab or the corner of the cloth for a narrow recess, applying almost no pressure.
  4. Wipe the bumper and surrounding plastic if dust has settled there.
  5. Check that no lint, streak, or cleaning residue remains before restarting.

Roborock advises against cleaning solution on sensors because abrasive cleaners can damage sensor coverings. The cited ECOVACS DEEBOT T50 OMNI instruction manual specifies a dry cloth for sensor lenses and the bumper and warns against a wet cloth to prevent water damage. Use those directions as a cautious default, while giving your own model’s manual priority.

Do not scrape a sensor window with a blade, abrasive pad, melamine sponge, or rough paper towel. Do not spray cleaner onto the robot; overspray can enter seams and leave a film that interferes with sensing.

How to clean charging contacts and dock pins

Charging contacts are the metal pads on the robot and the spring-loaded or fixed pins on the dock. Dust, hair, oxidation, or residue can interrupt the electrical connection. Roborock states that dirty contacts can slow down or even prevent charging, affecting the cleaning routine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. End the robot’s task and switch it off.
  2. Check the exact manual to determine whether the docking station should be unplugged. Follow that instruction before touching the dock pins.
  3. Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth to wipe the robot’s contacts and the matching dock pins.
  4. If the manual permits, use a soft dry brush to loosen dust around the pins. Keep bristles from catching on springs or forcing a pin sideways.
  5. Inspect for bent, stuck, corroded, or deeply pitted metal. Do not scrape contacts with a knife, metal tool, abrasive material, or harsh chemical.
  6. Ensure the surfaces are dry and free of fibers before reconnecting the dock and returning the robot.

ECOVACS guidance specifies a dry cloth to prevent water damage and cautions against harsh materials that can damage delicate charging pins. Do not apply water, alcohol, contact cleaner, oil, or polish unless the exact manufacturer manual explicitly directs you to use it.

Reassemble and verify the robot

  1. Confirm that the dustbin, filter, brush, brush cover, and side brushes are seated and latched.
  2. Check that no cloth fiber, hair, or brush bristle is left in an opening, wheel, sensor window, or contact area.
  3. Return the robot to the dock and observe whether it aligns and begins charging normally.
  4. Run a short supervised cleaning cycle on a clear area. Listen for scraping, repeated brush-stall alerts, unusual motor noise, or navigation errors.

Stop the test if a part rattles, a brush will not turn, the robot reports a missing bin or filter, or the dock repeatedly loses contact. Power down again and revisit the relevant installation step instead of continuing to run a potentially damaged component.

What to clean, and how

Part Safe default Avoid Manual check
Main brush and cavity Remove hair and debris; use the supplied tool or a dry soft brush. Cutting the roller, forcing end caps, or pouring water into the cavity. Removal direction and whether caps or bearings are serviceable.
Side brushes Clear hair from bristles, hub, and shaft; wipe dry. Pulling against a hidden fastener or soaking without permission. Screw, latch, or pull-off removal method.
Filter Tap gently and brush only when appropriate. Assuming it is washable or reinstalling it damp. Washability, rinse method, drying requirement, and replacement timing.
Sensors Gently wipe windows and bumper with a clean dry cloth. Sprays, abrasive cleaners, blades, and wet cloths unless specifically approved. Sensor locations and any model-specific cleaning instruction.
Charging contacts and dock pins Wipe with a clean dry microfiber cloth; use a soft brush only if allowed. Liquid, harsh materials, scraping, bending, or forcing spring pins. Whether the dock must be unplugged and how to handle persistent charging faults.

How often should you clean the parts?

There is no single manufacturer schedule that applies to every robot vacuum. Cleaning demand depends on floor type, pets, hair length, dust load, operating frequency, and the robot’s design. Follow the maintenance table in your manual and inspect parts sooner when performance changes.

Check the main and side brushes whenever you notice wrapped hair, a brush-stall warning, louder operation, or debris left along edges. Inspect the filter when suction drops, the dustbin fills unusually quickly, or the robot reports restricted airflow. Wipe sensors when navigation becomes erratic or the robot begins missing edges and obstacles. Check contacts when the robot fails to dock, charges intermittently, or shows a low battery after spending time on the dock.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replacement timing is also model-specific. Use the manual’s interval when one is provided, and replace a component earlier if it is damaged, worn, deformed, cracked, or no longer seals or turns correctly. For any replacement brush or filter, match the exact robot model and part specification; a visually similar accessory may not fit, seal, or report correctly.

Troubleshooting after cleaning

The robot will not charge

  • Confirm the dock is powered and positioned as the manual requires.
  • Check that both robot contacts and dock pins are clean, dry, aligned, and free to move.
  • Make sure the robot is sitting squarely on the dock rather than resting on a brush, cable, or uneven surface.
  • If charging remains intermittent, use the manual’s charging troubleshooting procedure. Do not scrape the contacts or apply liquid in an attempt to improve conductivity.

The robot reports a brush error

  • Power off and remove the brush again.
  • Inspect both ends, the cavity, and the cover for hair hidden under a cap or near a bearing.
  • Verify that the brush and cover are installed in the correct orientation and fully latched.
  • Replace the brush if it is cracked, bent, or still binds when turned gently.

Navigation is inaccurate after cleaning

  • Wipe every accessible sensor window again with a clean dry microfiber cloth.
  • Remove lint or residue that may remain on the bumper or sensor recess.
  • Confirm that no protective film, tape, or accessory is covering a sensor.
  • If the problem persists, consult the model manual rather than using stronger cleaner on the sensor.

Airflow is weak or the filter warning returns

  • Check that the filter is installed in the correct direction and that its seal is seated.
  • Clear the dustbin inlet and brush cavity.
  • If the filter is washable, verify that it is completely dry; if it is not washable, do not rinse it.
  • Replace a filter that is damaged or permanently clogged according to the manual’s part requirements.

Choosing a cleaning tool or replacement part

A soft-bristle cleaning brush is a practical optional tool for loose filter dust and brush maintenance when the manual permits brushing. It is not a substitute for a dry microfiber cloth on sensor windows or charging contacts, and it should never be used to spread water through electrical areas.

Buy a replacement brush or filter only when the existing part is damaged, worn, or due for replacement. Verify the exact robot model, generation, and part number, and prefer the manufacturer or an authorized-parts source when available. Compatibility, washability, and replacement timing matter more than a generic claim that one accessory fits many robots.

Final maintenance checklist

  • The robot is switched off before work begins.
  • The dock is unplugged when the model manual requires it.
  • Main and side brushes are free of wrapped hair and the brush cavity is clear.
  • The filter was tapped or brushed only as permitted, or washed only when explicitly identified as washable.
  • Any washed filter is fully dry before installation.
  • Sensor windows and the bumper were wiped gently with a dry cloth.
  • Robot contacts and dock pins are clean and dry, with no abrasive damage.
  • Every part is correctly seated, and a short supervised run confirms normal operation.
