Turn the appliance off, unplug it, and let it and its accessories cool completely before cleaning. Wipe the microwave cavity with a soft cloth or sponge and mild soapy water; clean the basket, tray, and rack only as the appliance manual directs. Remove grease and food residue before treating odors, and do not use vinegar, baking soda, steam, or other cleaners unless your model’s instructions allow them.
Clean the combo safely, in this order
- Switch it off, unplug it, and wait until it is fully cool. Baskets, racks, trays, and the microwave interior may remain hot after cooking. Use oven mitts if any accessory is still warm; do not begin until it has cooled.
- Remove loose crumbs and food. Take out only the parts the manual identifies as removable. Keep water and cleaning solution away from vents, controls, electrical connections, and the appliance body.
- Wipe the microwave cavity. Use a soft cloth or nonabrasive sponge dampened with mild soapy water to loosen splatters. Wipe away soap residue with a clean damp cloth, then dry the cavity. Whirlpool recommends this general approach for microwave interiors: Whirlpool’s microwave cleaning guidance.
- Wash removable air-fry parts according to the manual. Check the instructions for the exact basket, tray, rack, or other accessory before using a dishwasher or cleaner. Whirlpool says its microwave air-fry accessory can be cleaned in a dishwasher, but also describes washing it with mild soap, water, and a washcloth and cautions against abrasive cleansers and scrubbers: Whirlpool’s air-fryer accessory care guidance. That does not establish dishwasher safety for other models or accessories.
- Soften stuck-on grease rather than scraping it. Start with the mild cleaning method permitted by your manual and allow residue to loosen. Avoid metal tools, abrasive scrubbers, oven cleaner, and steam unless your model’s instructions expressly allow the specific method.
- Dry everything fully before reconnecting or cooking. Make sure the cavity and removable parts are dry, then reinstall only the parts specified by the manual.
Choose cleaners by model, not by appliance category
Microwave air-fryer combos do not share one universal cleaning rule. Manufacturer instructions can conflict even on common household ingredients. Frigidaire says its air-fryer toaster combo should be cold and unplugged, must not be immersed, and should not be cleaned with vinegar, baking soda, acids, abrasives, or steam equipment. It also warns that grease and food buildup can cause odors, malfunctions, and reduced performance: Frigidaire’s air-fryer toaster combo cleaning guidance.
By contrast, a manual for a particular Midea air fryer allows a baking-soda-and-vinegar mixture for baked-on residue in that model’s cooking cavity and specifies soft cloths or sponges, warm soapy water for designated components, and thorough drying. That instruction is for the appliance covered by that manual, not a general rule for microwave combos: Midea MAF1050MB user manual.
- Do not assume a removable basket or tray is dishwasher-safe; verify the accessory instructions.
- Do not apply vinegar, baking soda, lemon, steam, or another odor treatment unless the manual permits it for that surface and use.
- Use soft, nonabrasive cleaning materials and avoid forcing liquid into openings or controls.
Remove food odors after cleaning
Odors often linger when grease or food remains on a surface. Remove scraps and residue first, wash with the permitted mild method, and dry the cavity and accessories. If an odor remains, air the appliance out while it is off and unplugged; GE recommends leaving a microwave door open for two to three hours to ventilate a strong odor: GE microwave odor guidance.

Use a heated odor treatment only if your manual allows it
For its countertop microwave guidance, Whirlpool suggests heating one cup (250 mL) of water with one tablespoon (15 mL) of lemon juice or vinegar for two to five minutes, then drying the cavity with microfiber. This is microwave-specific advice, not automatic approval for every combo. Do not use the treatment if your combo’s instructions prohibit vinegar, steaming, or heating a cleaning solution: Whirlpool’s microwave cleaning guidance.
GE also recommends cleaning the cavity with baking soda or a nonabrasive detergent and letting it dry, but use that advice only where your own model’s instructions permit it. The differences between manufacturers are important: a cleaner or treatment allowed for one appliance may be prohibited for another.

When an odor may signal a problem
A new smell during early convection or grill cycles may be normal for some appliances, but the cited Whirlpool guidance concerns its countertop microwave context. Check your combo’s manual if a smell persists or seems unusual. If the odor is burning and is not from food—especially if it smells electrical or chemical—stop using the appliance and contact its manufacturer rather than trying another cleaner. GE gives the same stop-use advice for non-food burning odors.
