There is no universal weekly or monthly cleaning schedule for a garbage disposal in the manufacturer guidance reviewed. Rinse it during normal use, then clean accessible residue—especially beneath a removable sink baffle—when you notice odor or visible buildup. Follow the instructions for your specific model.
How often should you clean a garbage disposal?
Moen says its disposals scour internal parts with each use, while InSinkErator describes its disposers as low-maintenance and recommends regular use. Neither source sets a universal calendar interval. Routine rinsing during use is different from taking time to scrub a removable part.
Use odor or visible residue as a cue to inspect and clean the parts your model’s manual identifies as removable. Food can collect beneath the sink baffle as well as in the grind chamber. InSinkErator notes that odor is often a sign of food buildup, including under the baffle; an odor can also come from elsewhere in the drain or plumbing, so cleaning the disposal may not resolve every smell. Moen’s cleaning guidance and InSinkErator’s FAQ do not prescribe a fixed schedule.
How to clean the disposal safely
- Switch off the disposal. Use its switch, and follow your model’s manual for any further power-isolation steps before cleaning.
- Check whether the sink baffle is removable. Remove it only if the manual for your model permits it. Do not reach into the grinding chamber.
- Scrub the baffle’s underside. InSinkErator recommends a scouring pad for this accessible area, where food residue can collect. An existing pad may be sufficient; a special brush is not required, and do not insert a brush into the grinding chamber.
- Reinstall the baffle according to the manual before operating the disposal.
- Rinse with cold water. Run a medium stream of cold water, then operate the disposal as directed for your model. InSinkErator’s manual advises starting cold water before grinding and continuing it for several seconds afterward.
These baffle-cleaning steps come from InSinkErator’s support FAQ; removal instructions vary by model. Its care and use manual also warns against putting fingers or hands inside the unit.

What to use—and what to avoid
For residue on the baffle
Use a scouring pad on the removable baffle’s underside if your manual allows removal. This targets a known place for food buildup without putting a tool into the grind chamber.
For freshening
InSinkErator suggests running ice cubes with lemon or lime wedges as a freshening step. It also mentions baking soda for freshening. These are optional suggestions, not substitutes for scrubbing residue from the baffle, and they should not be treated as disinfectants or guaranteed odor cures.

Do not use chemical drain cleaners
Do not pour bleach, chemical drain openers, or other drain-cleaning products into the disposal. InSinkErator’s manual specifically warns against them. Never put your fingers or hands inside the chamber; if the disposal is jammed or an object must be removed, use the model’s troubleshooting instructions with power switched off and the specified long-handled tool—not a hand inside the unit.
