For ordinary dust on a foldable phone hinge, use only the model manufacturer’s approved method: a clean, soft, dry, lint-free cloth applied gently to the accessible exterior. Do not push a pick, brush, paper, swab, or any other object into the hinge, and do not pour or spray liquid into it. Google specifically says not to spray cleaners or compressed air at a Pixel phone. If debris will not wipe away easily, the hinge feels obstructed, or the phone is damaged, stop and contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair service.
Foldables differ in hinge construction, protective films, and ingress ratings. The exact model and local support guidance therefore matter more than a generic cleaning hack.
What you need—and what to leave out
Use a clean, soft, lint-free cloth. A microfiber cloth intended for phone or optical-surface cleaning is suitable for wiping the outside of the hinge, provided it is dry and free of grit. Fold the cloth so a clean section contacts the phone; do not use a cloth that has picked up sand or other particles.
- Use: a soft, dry, lint-free cloth for gentle exterior wiping.
- Do not use: liquid, cleaning solution, compressed air, picks, needles, brushes, paper, cotton swabs, or any object inserted into the hinge gap.
- Do not remove: the protective film on a Pixel Fold or pick at the edges of its foldable display.
Samsung’s care guidance specifically calls for gentle cleaning with a soft, dry cloth when a Galaxy foldable hinge is dusty or dirty. Google’s Pixel guidance allows a soft, lint-free cloth for exterior cleaning but warns against compressed-air sprays, cleaners, edge-picking, and attempts to remove the protective film.

Before you touch the hinge
Confirm the exact model rather than relying on a phone family name. The model name can be checked in Settings, on the original packaging, or in the manufacturer’s support portal. Also check the support page for the market where the phone was sold: Samsung’s model lists and service routes can differ by country, and a rating on one generation does not automatically apply to another.
Look at the hinge under good light without repeatedly opening and closing the phone. A surface film of lint or loose dust is different from a particle visibly trapped in a seam. If the hinge movement is already stiff, uneven, noisy, or limited, do not open and close it to “work” the particle out. Repeated flexing can increase the load on whatever is obstructing the mechanism.
Keep the cleaning goal narrow: remove loose material that transfers to a dry cloth. You are not disassembling the hinge, flushing it, or restoring a damaged mechanism. No manufacturer guidance cited here recommends a user-accessible internal cleaning tool.
Safe cleaning procedure
1. Identify the exact model and market
Read the model name in the phone’s settings, packaging, or support documentation before cleaning. Foldable care instructions and water-resistance ratings vary by model and region. A Galaxy Z Fold model, a Galaxy Z Flip model, and a Pixel Fold should not be treated as interchangeable devices.
2. Inspect the hinge without probing it
Open the phone only as far as it moves normally and examine the outside of the hinge in good light. Look for loose dust, sand, or other particles on the surface. Do not scrape at a speck, widen the hinge opening, or repeatedly flex the phone to make debris move. Fine particles in the hinge or on a foldable display can cause damage, so the goal is to remove only what comes away with a light surface wipe.
3. Prepare the cloth
Use a dry cloth with no visible grit, loose threads, oil, or cleaning residue. Fold it to create a broad, soft contact area rather than twisting it into a narrow point. A broad surface reduces the temptation to press a corner into the seam. If the cloth picks up a visible particle, refold it and use a clean section; dragging that particle back across the hinge can scratch an exterior surface.
4. Wipe a dusty Galaxy hinge gently
For a Samsung Galaxy foldable, place a dry, soft cloth over the accessible hinge surface and make light passes in one direction. Use a fresh section of the cloth if the first pass collects visible grit. Keep the cloth on the surface rather than pressing into a seam. Samsung’s instruction is for gentle removal of dust or dirt; it does not authorize a tool or fluid inside the hinge.

For a Google Pixel Fold, use a soft, lint-free cloth on the exterior only. Keep the cloth dry and away from openings. Do not spray the phone with cleaner or compressed air, and do not pick at the display edges or lift the factory protective film while trying to reach the hinge.
6. Make one controlled follow-up pass
Inspect the cloth and hinge after the first pass. If loose dust clearly remains on the surface, make one further light pass with a clean, dry area of the cloth. Do not increase pressure, change to a smaller implement, or add moisture when a particle does not transfer. At that point it should be treated as lodged debris or a possible mechanical problem.

7. Check the result without testing the mechanism
Inspect the hinge again. If the material has not moved with a gentle dry wipe, treat it as lodged debris rather than a cleaning task that needs more force. Stop if the cloth catches, the hinge movement changes, or you see damage, lifting, or a gap that was not present before.
8. Escalate instead of improvising
Contact the phone maker’s support channel or an authorized service provider when debris appears embedded, the hinge feels obstructed, or the device has suffered a drop, impact, liquid exposure, or other damage. Google recommends professional assistance for repairs, and Samsung provides model-specific repair guidance. Service staff can determine whether the hinge, display assembly, or protective components need inspection.

Sand and dirt are not harmless just because they are small. Google’s Pixel Fold safety guidance tells users to ensure that no objects or fine particles are on the foldable display or in the display hinge before closing the phone. Samsung likewise warns that no Galaxy foldable is dust resistant and that particles entering the device can cause problems.
A tool can push grit deeper, scratch a surface, damage the hinge seal, or transfer force to the flexible display. Compressed air can drive particles into openings; Google explicitly prohibits spraying compressed air at a Pixel phone. A liquid can migrate into openings even when a device has an ingress rating. For those reasons, a dry surface wipe is the endpoint of user cleaning—not the first step in a sequence that escalates to brushes, picks, or rinsing.
Particles can also be moved from the hinge to the foldable display when the phone is closed. Do not close the device over a visible grain of sand or dirt. Remove only material that is loose and accessible with the cloth; if a particle remains in the fold or hinge, leave the phone in the position recommended by the manufacturer’s support team and arrange service rather than forcing it shut.
Water-resistance ratings do not make hinge rinsing safe
Ingress ratings describe specified laboratory conditions, not permission to wash a hinge. Resistance can decline with wear, impact, repair, disassembly, or damage, and ratings differ among models.

Samsung’s Philippines precautions page adds that water-resistance ratings are based on laboratory conditions, are not permanent, and do not make IP48 phones completely dust-proof. It warns that sand and other small particles may affect the hinge and that water moving with force should be avoided. The page describes laboratory submersion of up to 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes; that figure is a test condition, not a home-cleaning instruction.
Those numbers should not be converted into a “safe rinse time.” A faucet, shower, spray bottle, or sink can apply moving water differently from a controlled immersion test. A phone that has been repaired, dropped, opened, or worn for years may no longer have its original resistance. Even a phone in the listed model group can have a compromised seal, so dry wiping remains the appropriate user method for hinge dust.

Common ideas that can damage a foldable
Rinsing with water
A water-resistance label is not a cleaning recommendation. Fresh-water test limits apply only under stated laboratory conditions, and they do not account for wear, impact, prior repair, forceful water, or particles already in the hinge. Liquid should not be applied to the hinge or openings.

Blowing or spraying compressed air
On Pixel phones, Google expressly says not to spray compressed air. Air pressure can move grit into a seam instead of removing it. Unless a manufacturer gives a model-specific instruction, leave compressed air out of the procedure.

Using a brush, paper corner, pick, or needle
These objects are not specified by the cited manufacturer guidance. They can scratch, snag, or push particles farther inside. A conservative reading of the dust and damage warnings is to keep every object out of the hinge.
Peeling the display film
On a Pixel Fold, the protective film is part of the phone’s intended display protection. Picking at its edges or trying to remove it can harm the foldable display, so cleaning the hinge is not a reason to lift it.
Forcing the hinge through a dirty spot
If movement feels different, stop operating the hinge repeatedly. A change in movement is a reason for inspection, not a signal to apply more pressure or a solvent.
Using a damp “electronics” wipe
A product marketed for electronics is not automatically approved for a foldable hinge. Unless the exact manufacturer instructions call for it, keep the cloth dry. Do not spray a cleaner onto the cloth and then press it into a seam; moisture can still migrate into openings.
What to do when the hinge still seems dirty
Loose surface dust remains
Make one further light pass with a clean, dry section of the cloth. If the dust does not transfer to the cloth, stop rather than increasing pressure.
A speck appears lodged in the seam
Do not dig it out. Record the exact model and contact the manufacturer or authorized service for advice. Tell the technician whether the phone has been exposed to sand, water, impact, or a previous repair, since those facts affect the assessment.
The hinge feels stiff, blocked, or mechanically different
Stop folding and unfolding it to test the sensation. An obstructed or damaged hinge needs professional evaluation; home probing can turn a small particle issue into display or hinge damage.
The display film or edge is lifting
Do not press the edge down, peel more film, or insert anything underneath it. Contact the manufacturer’s support service and describe the location and change you observed.

The phone was exposed to water
Do not rinse it again or use air pressure to dry the hinge. Follow the exact model’s current support instructions and request service if liquid may have entered an opening or if operation changes.
The phone was used at a beach or pool
Sand and saltwater create a higher-risk situation than ordinary household dust. Do not brush or flush the hinge yourself. Tell support about the exposure, because Samsung specifically cautions against beach and pool use for the listed water-resistant foldables.
How to prepare for support
Before contacting support, note the precise model, purchase market, visible particle location, whether the hinge movement changed, and any recent drop, repair, sand exposure, or liquid contact. Explain that you used only a dry, soft cloth and stopped when the debris did not come away. Do not continue experimenting while waiting for instructions; manufacturer service can distinguish removable surface dirt from an internal obstruction.
Take clear photographs of the exterior only if doing so does not require forcing the hinge or peeling film. Keep the phone in its normal, comfortable position and avoid pressing on a raised edge. Support may ask for the phone’s model and serial information, the timing of the problem, and whether the display or hinge behavior changed after an impact or liquid event.

Does IPX8 or IP48 mean the hinge is dustproof?

Clean only what you can remove from the hinge surface with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth and a light touch. Keep tools, liquids, compressed air, and protective-film removal out of the process. Foldable phones are not universally dust resistant, and an ingress rating is not a license to rinse the hinge. Persistent debris, changed hinge movement, or any sign of damage belongs with the manufacturer or an authorized repair professional.
