Clean a Fitbit band with fresh water when it is dirty or smells, and clean the tracker gently according to its model’s instructions. Keep leather, metal, knit, and woven bands out of water, clean charging contacts only as directed, and let every part dry fully before wearing or charging.
What you need before cleaning
For routine care, use fresh water and a soft cloth. Google’s instructions also specify a toothbrush for tracker charging contacts and a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol for charging-cable pins. These are ordinary cleaning supplies; a special kit is not required. Check the instructions for your exact tracker and band before using any cleanser, because care rules vary by model and material.
How to clean a Fitbit step by step
- Take the tracker off. If your model allows the band to detach, remove it when that makes cleaning easier and its care instructions permit it.
- Clean the band according to its material. For a washable active band, use fresh water; hypoallergenic soap may be used when needed, except on leather. For leather, metal, knit, or woven bands, wipe with a cloth dampened with water instead of soaking or rinsing the band.
- Wipe the tracker gently. Use a soft cloth and follow the instructions for your model. For Ace LTE, Google specifies a soft, dry, lint-free cloth for routine cleaning; if needed, lightly dampen it with fresh water. Avoid getting moisture into openings.
- Clean charging contacts only when needed. Google directs users to clean the tracker’s contacts with a toothbrush and fresh water, then dry them with a cloth or tissue. Do not scrape the contacts with metal: it can damage the plating and cause corrosion. Carefully clean the charging-cable pins with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol, making sure no fibers remain. Do not insert anything into the small back opening on models with an altimeter sensor.
- Dry everything fully. Let the band air-dry and dry your wrist before putting the tracker back on. Make sure the tracker and charging contacts are thoroughly dry before charging.
Band care depends on the material

Leather, metal, knit, and woven accessory bands are generally intended for normal daily activity, rather than high-intensity workouts or sleep. Google advises keeping these materials away from direct sunlight, high temperatures, and humid storage, which can cause discoloration or damage over time. Follow the care instructions for the particular band if they differ.

Use a gentle cloth for routine smudges, and avoid pushing moisture into openings. The general charging-contact guidance is specific: use a toothbrush and fresh water on the contacts, dry them afterward, and use a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol on the cable pins. Keep the pins free of debris and stray fibers. Never probe a sensor opening or scrape the plated contacts with a metal object.

Ace LTE has additional model-specific rules: turn it off and remove it from the charger before cleaning; do not clean it while charging. Google also says not to use external heat to dry it, compressed air, or ultrasonic cleaning. These Ace LTE restrictions should not be assumed to describe every Fitbit model; check the instructions for your device.
Water resistance does not mean every Fitbit or band can be soaked
Google’s water guidance lists most of the models in its table as water-resistant to 50 meters, while the original Ace is described as showerproof and not suitable for swimming. That specification applies only to the models covered by the table, not every Fitbit. Water resistance can diminish over time and can be affected by drops, soaps, shampoos, conditioners, perfume, insect repellent, lotions, sunscreen, and high-velocity water. Google advises taking the device off and drying it after it gets wet, and avoiding showers, hot tubs, and saunas to reduce exposure to soap and heat. If the tracker contacts a liquid other than fresh water, rinse or clean it with fresh water and a soap-free cleanser such as Cetaphil, then dry it with a lint-free cloth. Do not treat this instruction as permission to apply other household cleaners or disinfectants.

Clean the band and your wrist regularly, especially after exercise or sweating. Wash the band when it is dirty or has a noticeable odor, then let it air-dry and make sure your skin is dry before wearing the tracker again. Sweat or harsh soap trapped beneath a band can aggravate irritation for people with sensitivities. Take the device off while applying sunscreen or insect-repellent sprays to limit product exposure and possible skin irritation.
