If your Dyson hair dryer’s airflow has weakened, a blocked filter is one possible cause. For a standard Dyson Supersonic, switch the dryer off, unplug it, let it cool, twist the filter cage anticlockwise, and pull it down and away. Brush the mesh with a soft, dry toothbrush or C-brush only—Dyson says not to use water or chemicals on this mesh. Refit the cage and rotate it until it locks before switching the dryer on.
The procedure is not identical for every Dyson hair dryer. Supersonic Nural has a washable magnetic cage but a filter mesh that must stay dry, while the Supersonic Professional uses a two-part filter with separate instructions. Identify the model and filter configuration first.
Why reduced airflow can point to the filter
Hair, dust and styling-product residue can accumulate around the intake filter. Dyson lists a blocked filter as a possible cause of reduced airflow, reduced or absent heat, intermittent power, failure to turn on, and unpleasant or burning smells. These symptoms do not prove that the filter is blocked; a blockage is only one possible explanation. The standard Supersonic troubleshooting page advises regular cleaning to maintain airflow and performance (Dyson troubleshooting instructions).
Do not keep operating a dryer that smells strongly of burning, repeatedly cuts out, or becomes unusually hot. Unplug it, allow it to cool, and inspect the filter using the model-specific procedure below. If the symptom remains after a correct cleaning, use Dyson’s troubleshooting for your model or contact Dyson support rather than repeatedly running the machine.

A filter alert is a maintenance prompt, not a diagnosis. A clean intake cannot rule out an electrical, thermal or motor problem, and cleaning the wrong outer ring will not restore airflow. Treat the first cleaning as a controlled inspection: disconnect power, use only the permitted method, reassemble carefully, and then make one brief test.
Identify the dryer and filter before cleaning
Look at the name on the handle or body and check the filter assembly at the base of the handle. Dyson’s hair dryer support directory can help you select the correct model. The differences matter because instructions for a one-part standard filter cannot be assumed to apply to Nural or Professional hardware.
| Model or configuration | What you are cleaning | Key rule |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Supersonic | One filter cage with mesh | Brush the mesh dry with a soft, dry toothbrush or C-brush. Do not use water or chemicals on the mesh. |
| Supersonic Nural | Magnetic filter cage and filter mesh | Wipe the mesh with a dry, lint-free cloth or soft brush. The Nural FAQ separately permits washing the removable cage; keep water away from the mesh. |
| Supersonic Professional | Two-part filter assembly | Follow the Professional two-part procedure. Do not substitute the standard Supersonic steps or assume a standard part fits. |
If you cannot tell whether the filter is one-part or two-part, stop before removing anything and use the model directory or the support page for the exact dryer. Do not order a replacement based only on a similar-looking photograph. Dyson lists a genuine Professional filter accessory for that specific configuration, but it is not presented as a universal Supersonic part.

- A soft, dry toothbrush or Dyson C-brush for standard Supersonic mesh.
- A clean, lint-free cloth or soft brush for Nural maintenance.
- A dry, well-lit work surface where the small cage cannot be lost.
- Enough time for the dryer to cool completely.
Cleaning does not require a liquid cleaner or a special kit. A soft brush you already own is sufficient for the standard mesh; buying a brush is optional rather than a requirement. In particular, do not spray disinfectant, solvent, detergent or oil onto a standard Supersonic mesh. Disconnect the power before touching the cage; a switched-off dryer can still start if its plug remains connected and a control is moved accidentally.
Work over a clear surface and keep the filter parts away from sinks, styling products and loose towels. Good lighting makes it easier to see a lint mat around the circumference and to confirm that the locking marks line up later. If another person normally uses the dryer, note the cleaning date so a monthly check is not missed.
Standard Dyson Supersonic: dry-clean the filter mesh
These steps apply to the standard one-part Supersonic filter described by Dyson. The manufacturer’s support instructions are at Dyson’s standard Supersonic troubleshooting page.
- Turn off, unplug and cool the dryer. Set the controls to off, remove the plug from the outlet, and wait until the housing is cool to the touch. Do not remove the cage while the dryer is warm.
- Hold the handle securely. Keep the dryer supported in one hand so the cage does not twist the whole machine. Avoid squeezing buttons or forcing the housing.
- Rotate the filter cage anticlockwise. Gently turn the cage in the direction that releases it. If it will not move with light hand pressure, check that you have the correct model and are turning the cage rather than another trim ring; do not use pliers or a tool.
- Pull the cage down and away. Once released, draw the cage straight away from the bottom of the handle. Put it on the dry work surface with the mesh facing up.
- Brush the mesh. Use a soft, dry toothbrush or C-brush. Work across the mesh gently to lift lint and dust. Brush around the entire circumference and the edges where debris can collect. Keep the strokes light; pushing hard can deform the mesh or drive debris inward.
- Keep the mesh dry. Dyson specifically says not to use chemicals or water for this standard filter. Do not rinse it under a tap, soak it, or use a wet cloth. If you accidentally wet it, leave the parts disconnected and allow them to dry completely before seeking model-specific guidance; do not power the dryer to speed drying.
- Reattach the cage. Clip the cage back onto the bottom of the machine and rotate it clockwise until it locks. On the standard assembly, check that the dot sits below the closed-circle mark. A cage that is only partly engaged can let dust bypass the intended path or prevent normal operation.
- Check the fit before use. Confirm that the cage is seated evenly, the lock mark is aligned, and no brush bristles or loose debris remain around the opening. Only then reconnect power and test the dryer briefly.
Dyson recommends cleaning a standard filter once a month or when the dryer’s three LEDs flash continuously. The light indication is a maintenance alert, not a guarantee that the filter is the only fault. If the airflow is still weak after this procedure, do not repeat increasingly aggressive scrubbing; move to the troubleshooting checks below.

Supersonic Nural: separate the washable cage from the dry mesh
Nural has model-specific instructions in Dyson’s Nural support guide and Nural user manual. The guide says to unplug and cool the machine, remove the cage by rotating it counterclockwise, clean the cage and mesh with a lint-free cloth or soft brush, avoid water on the mesh, and avoid excessive pressure. It then directs you to align the cage and rotate it clockwise to lock.
Routine Nural cleaning
- Switch the Nural off, unplug it, and wait for it to cool.
- Rotate the magnetic filter cage counterclockwise and remove it from the handle.
- Wipe the filter mesh with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth or use a soft brush. Do not press hard, and do not put water on the mesh.
- Clean loose surface debris from the cage using the same dry method unless you are carrying out the separate washable-cage procedure below.
- Align the cage with the handle, rotate it clockwise, and verify that it is locked before reconnecting power.
When the Nural cage needs washing
The Nural FAQ gives a separate instruction for the removable magnetic filter cage: remove the cage, wash that cage in warm soapy water, soak it for at least 30 minutes, rinse it, and let it dry fully. The filter itself should be wiped with a clean, dry cloth. This permission applies to the removable Nural cage described by the Nural FAQ; it is not permission to wash standard Supersonic mesh or another model’s filter.
Keep the washed cage and the mesh physically separate while drying. Do not reinstall a damp cage, and do not reconnect the dryer until every part that could contact the intake is completely dry. If your Nural hardware or regional manual uses different wording, follow the instructions supplied for that exact unit. Never shorten the 30-minute soak by using hotter water or a heater.
Nural maintenance alert
Dyson recommends Nural cleaning once a month or when the three white LEDs flash continuously. Clean sooner if visible lint covers the intake or if airflow changes, but treat continuing heat, power or odor problems as a troubleshooting issue rather than an automatic filter diagnosis.

Supersonic Professional: do not use the standard procedure
The Professional model uses a two-part filter assembly. Dyson’s Professional filter page explicitly distinguishes dryers with a two-part filter from one-part models and lists a genuine Professional filter accessory. Dyson’s published Professional page does not provide the complete removal and cleaning sequence in the material summarized here, so do not improvise one from the standard Supersonic instructions.
- Confirm that the dryer is the Professional model and that its filter is the two-part configuration.
- Open Dyson’s Professional support instructions and follow the sequence for that assembly.
- Do not assume a standard Supersonic cage or replacement filter is compatible.
- If you are considering a replacement, verify the part number and compatibility on the Professional page before ordering.
If the filter configuration is unclear, Dyson’s general hair dryer support directory is the safer starting point than forcing a cage. A genuine replacement can be worthwhile when the part is damaged or will not lock, but compatibility must be confirmed first; there is no universal Supersonic filter that fits every Dyson dryer.
How often to clean the filter
For both the standard Supersonic and Nural, Dyson’s stated schedule is monthly cleaning or cleaning when the model’s three-LED alert flashes continuously. A monthly check is useful even when airflow seems normal because lint can build gradually. The indicator should prompt an inspection, not encourage you to wash a mesh that the instructions say must remain dry.

Record the date of each cleaning on a simple calendar if the dryer is used by several people. At each check, look for a visible mat of lint, a cage that no longer locks smoothly, or a persistent odor. Those observations help distinguish routine maintenance from a fault that needs support. Heavy use, long hair, airborne dust or frequent styling-product use may make visible inspection useful before the monthly point, but Dyson’s published interval remains the practical baseline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat to do if airflow is still weak
After cleaning, verify the basics in this order:
- Confirm the cage is locked. Remove power, inspect the alignment mark, and reseat the cage if it is crooked or loose.
- Check that the correct part was cleaned. A Professional two-part filter and a Nural magnetic cage require model-specific handling; cleaning an unrelated outer ring will not clear the intake.
- Inspect for remaining lint. With the dryer unplugged, look at the mesh under good light. Use only the dry, soft method permitted for your model.
- Test briefly after reassembly. Watch for airflow, heat, unusual noise, intermittent power or odor. Stop immediately if the dryer smells burning or cuts out.
- Use Dyson’s model-specific troubleshooting. The Supersonic support page and the model directory provide the next checks. Contact Dyson support if the problem persists after the documented cleaning.
A clean filter cannot correct every cause of low airflow. The manufacturer lists blockage as a possible cause alongside symptoms such as no heat, intermittent operation, failure to start and bad smells; it does not state that every occurrence comes from the filter. Continued operation despite those symptoms can turn a simple maintenance question into a service issue.
When airflow changes immediately after reassembly
Disconnect the plug again before touching anything. Check that the cage is fully seated, the dot is below the closed-circle mark on a standard Supersonic, and no cloth fibers or brush bristles are trapped at the opening. Do not test with the cage removed. If the cage repeatedly loosens, will not rotate to the lock position, or appears cracked, stop using the dryer and ask Dyson about the correct part or service route.
Cleaning mistakes that can damage the dryer or hide the fault
- Rinsing standard Supersonic mesh: water is not allowed by the standard instructions. Keep this mesh dry.
- Using chemicals: solvents, sprays and detergents can leave residue and are not part of Dyson’s standard mesh procedure.
- Applying excessive pressure: aggressive scrubbing can deform the mesh. Use a soft brush and light strokes.
- Cleaning while plugged in: always disconnect power.
- Reassembling damp parts: a wet cage or mesh should not be installed or powered.
- Forcing the cage: resistance can indicate the wrong model, the wrong direction, or a misaligned part. Recheck the model instead of using tools.
- Mixing instructions: Nural’s washable-cage FAQ does not change the standard Supersonic rule, and the Professional two-part filter is not interchangeable with either.
- Buying an unverified replacement: compatibility depends on the model and filter configuration. Check Dyson’s listed part and support information.
- Running without the cage: the cage is part of the intended intake assembly. Do not operate the dryer while a filter component is removed.
- Trying to dry parts with heat: air-dry washed Nural components fully; do not use the dryer itself, a heat gun or another hot appliance.
A practical maintenance checklist
- Identify the model and whether the filter is one-part, Nural magnetic, or Professional two-part.
- Switch off, unplug and cool the dryer.
- Remove the cage only in the documented direction.
- Use a soft, dry brush for standard Supersonic mesh.
- For Nural, keep the mesh dry; wash only the removable cage if following the Nural FAQ.
- Let every washed component dry completely.
- Reinstall and lock the cage, checking the alignment mark where applicable.
- Clean monthly or when the model’s three LEDs flash continuously.
- Stop using the dryer and seek support for persistent reduced airflow, heat loss, intermittent power, failure to start or burning smells.
When professional help is the right next step
Contact Dyson when the documented cleaning does not restore normal operation, when the cage will not lock, or when symptoms return immediately. Support can identify whether your exact serial-numbered model has a different filter design or a service requirement. Use the model-specific support pages rather than treating a generic online cleaning video as authority.
A genuine Professional replacement filter is intended for the Professional two-part configuration listed by Dyson; it should not be presented as a universal Supersonic replacement. Confirm compatibility and current availability on Dyson’s Professional filter page before purchasing any part. For standard Supersonic owners, a soft dry brush is normally all that is needed for routine cleaning, so replacement should follow inspection and model-specific advice rather than guesswork.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Dyson hair dryer have reduced airflow?
A blocked filter is one possible cause. Dyson also associates blockage with reduced heat, intermittent power, failure to turn on and bad or burning smells, but those symptoms are not proof of a blocked filter. Clean the correct filter once, then use Dyson troubleshooting or support if the problem remains.
How do I clean a standard Dyson Supersonic filter?
Unplug and cool the dryer, twist the one-part cage anticlockwise, pull it down and away, and brush the mesh gently with a soft, dry toothbrush or C-brush. Do not use water or chemicals. Refit the cage and turn it clockwise until locked, with the dot below the closed-circle mark.

Can I wash a Dyson Supersonic filter?
Do not wash the standard Supersonic mesh. Dyson’s standard instructions require a dry brush and prohibit water and chemicals. Nural is different: its FAQ permits washing the removable magnetic cage in warm soapy water after removing it, while the Nural mesh remains dry.
How often should I clean my filter?
Dyson recommends monthly cleaning for the standard Supersonic and Nural, or cleaning when the model’s three LEDs flash continuously. Nural’s guide specifically refers to three white LEDs. Inspect sooner if visible lint is covering the intake or airflow changes.
What does it mean when three LEDs flash continuously?
It is a maintenance alert indicating that the filter should be checked and cleaned according to the model’s instructions. It does not establish that the filter is the only cause of weak airflow or other performance problems.
Can I use compressed air, a vacuum or a wet wipe?
The documented standard procedure calls for a soft, dry toothbrush or C-brush, not a wet wipe or chemical cleaner. Avoid adding pressure or tools that could deform the mesh. For Nural, a clean, dry lint-free cloth or soft brush is supported for the mesh.
Why will the filter cage not come off?
Unplug the dryer and check the model, filter configuration and rotation direction. The standard cage releases anticlockwise and should move with gentle hand pressure. Do not use pliers or force it; Professional and Nural assemblies are different.
Is a Dyson Professional replacement filter compatible with my Supersonic?
Not automatically. Dyson identifies the Professional accessory for the Professional two-part filter configuration. Verify the model and part number on Dyson’s Professional page before buying; do not assume it fits a standard one-part Supersonic or Nural.
What if I washed a part by mistake?
Keep the part disconnected and do not power the dryer to speed drying. For a standard mesh, seek model-specific Dyson guidance because water is not permitted. For a Nural cage, rinse away soap and let it dry fully, keeping it separate from the dry mesh before reassembly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wash the filter mesh on a standard Dyson Supersonic?
No. Dyson’s standard procedure says to clean the mesh with a soft, dry toothbrush or C-brush and not to use water or chemicals. Only the removable Nural cage has a separate washing instruction.
How often should I clean a Dyson hair dryer filter?
Dyson recommends monthly cleaning for standard Supersonic and Nural models, or when three LEDs flash continuously. Nural’s guidance specifies three white LEDs.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What should I do if airflow stays weak after cleaning?
Unplug the dryer, confirm the cage is correctly locked and that you cleaned the correct model-specific assembly, then use Dyson troubleshooting. Contact Dyson if airflow, heat or power problems persist.
Is the Professional filter interchangeable with other Supersonic models?
No assumption is safe. The Professional uses a two-part filter, so verify the model and part number on Dyson’s Professional page before purchasing or installing a replacement.
The Bottom Line
Reduced airflow can indicate a blocked Dyson filter, but the safe fix depends on the model. Unplug and cool the dryer, keep standard Supersonic mesh completely dry, wash only the removable Nural cage when following its specific FAQ, and use separate instructions for the Professional two-part filter. Refit and lock every part before testing, clean monthly or at the three-LED alert, and contact Dyson when symptoms continue.
