To clean a car interior without damaging it, first check the owner’s manual for each surface, remove loose dust and grit, then use only the cloth and cleaner the manufacturer permits. Apply as little moisture as practical, keep liquids away from electrical components, and dry surfaces as directed. There is no single cleaner or cloth that is safe for every screen, seat material, and trim finish.
Why your car’s manual matters before you clean
Two surfaces that look alike may have different coatings or materials, and manufacturers do not give identical cleaning instructions. Guidance can vary between a touchscreen and an instrument display, between fabric and leather seats, or even between plastic and piano-lacquer-look trim in the same vehicle. The manual for your specific vehicle and market is the deciding reference.
The difference is especially clear with screens. Mercedes-Benz’s 2026 EQS Sedan owner manual for the US says to let the display cool, then use a microfiber cloth and a suitable display-care product. Toyota’s consumer guidance describes a lightly dampened microfiber cloth with specialized LCD cleaner. Tesla’s UK Model 3 manual says to use a soft, lint-free cloth designed for displays and prohibits cleaners, alcohol-based gel, and wet wipes on its touchscreens. These are not interchangeable instructions: follow the one for your vehicle, not a method copied from another make or model.

Before cleaning, identify what you are touching: the screen itself, its bezel, the instrument display, fabric or suede-like upholstery, genuine or imitation leather, plastic, wood, piano-black trim, carpet, or seat belt. The owner’s manual may give separate directions for each. Mercedes-Benz, for example, distinguishes its display, plastic trim, genuine leather seats, and seat belts.

Check the manual for the exact model year, market, and equipment where possible. A model name alone may not settle the question: instructions can depend on the fitted screen or the material used on a seat or trim panel. If a screen has a separate bezel, or a seat has mixed materials, treat those as separate surfaces until the manual says otherwise. Do not infer that the instructions for a nearby panel apply to the screen, switch, belt, or upholstery beside it.
What to gather—and what to leave aside
Start with tools that remove debris without introducing an unapproved chemical. A vacuum or soft brush can lift loose dust, crumbs, and grit before wiping. For a screen, use only the type of soft cloth the vehicle’s instructions allow. If a cleaner is needed, choose one specifically permitted for that surface and material—not merely a product marketed for cars.
- Use: a vacuum or soft brush for loose dirt, and a clean, soft cloth appropriate to the surface.
- Use conditionally: an upholstery or display cleaner only if the manual allows that type of product for the exact material or screen.
- Do not assume: household glass cleaner, disinfectant, solvent, alcohol-based product, wet wipe, or generic all-purpose cleaner is safe across the cabin.
- Check first: cleaner-label warnings and the vehicle manual; Kia advises testing a cleaner on a concealed area where needed.
Cloth choice can matter as much as cleaner choice. Mercedes-Benz specifies microfiber for its display and plastic trim but says not to use microfiber on its genuine leather seats. A cloth recommended for one part of the cabin may therefore be unsuitable for another.
When comparing products or methods, make compatibility the first criterion. Confirm that the product is allowed for the exact material and finish, that the manual permits its cleaner type, and that the cloth is appropriate. Then consider how much moisture the instructions allow and whether the surface is beside electronics, seat-mounted airbags, or seat belts. A product advertised as a car-interior cleaner is not automatically a fit for every cabin surface. If a cleaner is conditional or the material is uncertain, follow the label and manual rather than relying on a broad product claim.
A soft lint-free display cloth is a reasonable tool to consider when the vehicle manual calls for one; it is not a guarantee that the same cloth or method suits every interior. A vacuum is useful for loose dirt before wiping. An automotive upholstery cleaner is only an option if the manual permits it for the specific fabric. No price, brand, or product category overrides the vehicle’s instructions.
A safe order for cleaning the cabin
- Read the vehicle-specific instructions. Find the sections for displays, upholstery, trim, belts, and any other surface you intend to clean. Check for cautions about cleaner type, cloth material, moisture, and drying.
- Remove loose grit first. Vacuum or gently brush crumbs and dust away rather than rubbing them across a screen, seat, or trim. Kia and Hyundai manuals describe vacuuming or brushing loose interior dirt.
- Work on one identified surface at a time. Keep a screen cloth separate from cloths used on seats or trim so debris or cleaner from another surface is not transferred. This is a practical way to follow the different material-specific instructions; it does not replace them.
- Use the permitted cloth and cleaner. If the manual calls for a dry cloth, do not add cleaner. If it allows a damp cloth or product, use only what it specifies and avoid saturating the material.
- Keep liquid controlled and away from electronics. Do not spray or pour liquid onto a screen, switch, seam, or electrical component. Hyundai warns that liquid can damage electrical and electronic components.
- Dry as directed. Follow the vehicle’s instructions for drying and do not leave upholstery or carpet soaked. If the manual does not establish a safe method for a particular material, pause rather than improvising with another surface’s instructions.
The order matters because wiping first can move grit across a surface, while adding cleaner before checking compatibility can expose a coating or material to something the manufacturer does not allow. A simple sequence—identify, remove loose debris, clean only as instructed, and dry—helps avoid those avoidable risks without assuming that every surface needs the same treatment.
How to clean screens and display bezels
First check whether the manual tells you to switch off the display or let it cool before cleaning. Then use the specified display cloth and cleaner, if any. The manufacturer guidance differs enough that a generic rule such as “always use LCD cleaner” or “never use any cleaner” would be wrong for some vehicles.
Recommended Free Tools
Keep moisture on the cloth only when the manual permits a damp cloth; do not apply liquid directly to the display. Avoid pressure that could grind remaining dust into the surface. Clean the screen and its bezel according to their own instructions, since adjacent parts may use different finishes.

Tesla’s UK Model 3 manual is particularly restrictive: it calls for a soft, lint-free cloth designed for displays and says not to use cleaners, alcohol-based gel, or wet wipes on its touchscreens. Toyota’s consumer advice instead describes a lightly dampened microfiber cloth with specialized LCD cleaner. Mercedes-Benz’s 2026 EQS Sedan US manual directs owners to let its display cool and use microfiber with a suitable display-care product; its wording concludes, “Do not use any other agents.” Treat each example as guidance for that named vehicle, not a universal prescription.
That contrast is useful when choosing what not to do: do not settle a disagreement between manuals by averaging the methods. A cleaner that Toyota describes for its guidance is not thereby approved for a Tesla touchscreen; a no-cleaner rule in one manual does not erase a different instruction from another manufacturer. The rule for your own screen controls.
How to clean fabric and suede-like upholstery
Remove crumbs and grit with a vacuum or soft brush before wiping. Then check the instructions for the seat’s actual material. Ford’s 2024 Bronco Sport manual for the US warns against household and glass cleaners on fabric and describes using a soft damp cloth with a mild soap solution for certain fabrics. Kia’s 2025 UK manual describes a suitable interior cleaner for heavily soiled fabric seats. These directions are vehicle- and material-specific; neither establishes that the same soap solution or cleaner is suitable for every fabric or suede-like surface.
If a cleaner is permitted, follow its label and any manual directions, including testing on a concealed area where appropriate. Avoid soaking the fabric or carpet, and follow the manual’s drying instructions. If the manual does not identify a method for a particular upholstery type, do not infer one from instructions for a different seat material.
For a heavily soiled seat, the Kia example does not mean that any strong or general-purpose cleaner is appropriate; it refers to a suitable interior cleaner within that manual’s context. Likewise, Ford’s damp-cloth and mild-soap direction is limited to certain fabrics in the 2024 Bronco Sport instructions. Check the actual material and the manual before deciding whether the situation calls for a permitted cleaner or only a cloth. If the label warns against an application, do not use it just because the product is sold for automotive upholstery.
How to clean leather and imitation leather
Do not treat genuine leather and imitation leather as interchangeable. Use the instructions for the material fitted to your vehicle. Mercedes-Benz’s guidance for its genuine leather seats specifies a damp cotton cloth, warns against letting the leather become too damp, and says not to use microfiber on those seats. That instruction differs from its display and plastic-trim cloth guidance, so using one cabin-wide cloth is not appropriate for that example.
The cited guidance does not establish a universal cleaner or method for all leather, imitation leather, or coated seat surfaces. If your vehicle manual specifies a different cloth or cleaner—or provides no instruction for the seat finish—follow the manual or seek guidance from the vehicle maker rather than borrowing a method intended for another material.
Be especially cautious when seat surfaces meet trim or a screen: the fact that a damp cloth is permitted on one does not establish that the same moisture level is appropriate for the next. Use a separate cloth if needed to avoid carrying cleaner or debris from one material to another. The relevant standard is not whether a technique is common for leather, but whether it is allowed for the seat in your vehicle.

How to clean plastic, wood, and glossy trim
Identify the trim finish before wiping. Mercedes-Benz advises a damp microfiber cloth for plastic trim, while its directions differ for genuine wood and piano-lacquer-look trim. Renault’s 2026 Duster manual page calls for soft cloths and soapy water on trim, but says maintenance of the multimedia screen depends on the equipment. These examples show why a dashboard should not be treated as one uniform surface.
Use a separate, clean cloth where the manual calls for one, and keep liquids away from nearby electrical components. Do not transfer a method for plastic to wood, glossy trim, or the screen beside it. If the finish is unclear, check the vehicle documentation before applying cleaner.
“Glossy” is not a material specification: a piano-black-look panel, genuine wood, plastic, and a display may sit together but have different care instructions. Likewise, Renault’s trim guidance does not decide how to clean every multimedia screen; its manual page says screen maintenance depends on equipment. Identify the panel first, then follow the section for that particular finish.

Seat belts are not simply another upholstery panel. Mercedes-Benz gives them separate instructions from its leather seats and trim, and the comparison of manufacturer guidance identifies seat-belt and seat-mounted-airbag cautions as points to check when choosing a method. Read those cautions before cleaning belts or upholstery near an airbag area; do not apply a general seat-cleaning method where the manual gives a specific restriction.
Likewise, check the manual for carpets and any surface not covered by the instructions above. The same basic sequence—remove loose debris, use the permitted product sparingly, and dry as directed—does not authorize a particular cleaner or technique for a material the manual treats differently.
When the manual gives a separate instruction for a belt, belt-adjacent area, or seat-mounted-airbag area, treat that as a boundary on the general cleaning routine. Do not choose a cleaner solely because it is suitable for nearby fabric or trim. If you cannot locate the relevant caution, pause and check the vehicle maker’s owner information or ask an authorized service representative.
Common mistakes and what to do instead
- Using glass cleaner on every shiny surface: a screen, glossy trim, and glass are different surfaces. Check each one’s instructions; Ford’s 2024 Bronco Sport manual specifically warns against household and glass cleaners on fabric.
- Assuming a “car interior” label guarantees compatibility: confirm that the product is permitted for the exact upholstery or finish, and follow label warnings.
- Wiping before removing grit: vacuum or brush first so loose particles are not dragged over the surface.
- Spraying cleaner directly into the cabin: apply moisture only as the manual allows and keep liquid away from electrical and electronic components.
- Using one cloth everywhere: cloth recommendations can differ even within one vehicle. Mercedes-Benz’s instructions, for example, distinguish microfiber use on a display from cotton cloth on its genuine leather seats.
- Borrowing another make’s method: Toyota, Tesla, and Mercedes-Benz give materially different screen guidance. Use your own vehicle’s instructions rather than averaging the examples.
- Assuming a hidden test makes any product safe: Kia advises a concealed-area test where needed, but a test does not override an explicit restriction in the vehicle manual or cleaner label.
- Applying a trim method to the whole dashboard: plastic, wood, piano-lacquer-look trim, and the multimedia screen can have different instructions even when they are side by side.
When you cannot confirm a safe method
If the finish or upholstery material is uncertain, or the manual does not clearly address it, do not test an unapproved cleaner on a visible area. Check the vehicle maker’s owner information for the exact model, market, and equipment, or ask an authorized service representative what method is permitted. A concealed-area test may be appropriate when the manual or cleaner label calls for it, but it does not make a product suitable if the manufacturer prohibits it.

The vehicle, market, equipment, and material differences are why the manual for the car being cleaned takes precedence over any general technique.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use glass cleaner on my car’s touchscreen?
Do not assume it is safe. Screen instructions differ by vehicle: Tesla’s UK Model 3 manual prohibits cleaners on its touchscreens, while Toyota consumer guidance describes specialized LCD cleaner. Check the manual for your own display and use only what it permits.
Is microfiber safe for every car interior surface?
No. It is recommended for some surfaces in the cited guidance, but Mercedes-Benz says not to use microfiber on its genuine leather seats. Choose the cloth by surface and manual, not by a cabin-wide rule.
Should I spray cleaner directly onto a screen or trim?
The safe general approach is to keep liquid controlled and away from electronics. Do not spray or pour it onto a screen, switch, seam, or electrical component. Follow the vehicle’s instructions on whether a damp cloth or cleaner is permitted.

Remove loose dust, crumbs, and grit with a vacuum or soft brush first. Kia and Hyundai manuals describe vacuuming or brushing loose interior dirt. This reduces the chance of dragging particles across the surface while wiping.
Can one interior cleaner work on fabric, leather, and plastic?
Do not assume so. The manufacturer instructions distinguish materials and finishes, and cleaner compatibility depends on the exact surface. Use a product only when the vehicle manual permits that type for the material, and follow the product label.
How should I clean fabric seats that are heavily soiled?
Start with the vehicle manual. Kia’s 2025 UK manual describes a suitable interior cleaner for heavily soiled fabric seats, while Ford’s 2024 Bronco Sport manual gives a soft damp cloth and mild soap solution for certain fabrics and warns against household and glass cleaners. These are examples for named vehicles, not universal instructions.
What if I cannot identify my seat or trim material?
Pause rather than choosing a method based on appearance. Check the owner information for your vehicle’s model, market, and equipment, or ask the vehicle maker or an authorized service representative. A concealed-area test is appropriate only when the manual or product label calls for it and does not override a prohibition.
