If you own the digital version of Minecraft for Nintendo Switch, you can preorder the digital Minecraft Standard Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 through Nintendo eShop at no charge in most territories. The offer runs through January 31, 2027, and the Switch 2 edition is scheduled to launch October 27, 2026. Japan and Taiwan have local upgrade prices instead of a free offer. Minecraft’s announcement and Nintendo’s product listing set out the terms.
Who qualifies for the free upgrade?
The limited-time offer is for people who already own a digital version of Minecraft for Nintendo Switch. It covers the digital Standard Edition for Nintendo Switch 2, not a physical cartridge. The announcement does not extend the offer to people whose only copy is physical, so physical-only owners should not assume they qualify. Minecraft’s offer details specify digital ownership.
How to claim it in Nintendo eShop
- On your Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2, open Nintendo eShop using the Nintendo Account associated with your digital copy of Minecraft.
- Find the digital Minecraft Standard Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 in eShop.
- Check the displayed price and offer terms for your eShop territory before proceeding. In most territories, the eligible digital-owner offer is free; Japan and Taiwan have charges.
- Complete the eShop preorder or claim flow shown for your account. The official announcement confirms eShop as the channel, but does not publish the exact screen sequence, button labels, or ownership-check process.
This is a limited-time preorder offer, not a general set of confirmed button-by-button instructions. Nintendo’s general guidance for some Switch 2 upgrade packs is not specific to this Minecraft offer, so follow the live Minecraft listing rather than assuming those generic steps apply. Minecraft’s announcement identifies Nintendo eShop as the route; Nintendo’s upgrade-pack support page covers a broader process.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Standard, Deluxe, Ultimate, and physical editions
The free route is the digital Standard Edition for eligible digital Switch owners. Deluxe and Ultimate Collections are optional paid upgrades at discounted fees; they are not part of the free Standard offer. The expanded collections include add-ons, Character Creator items, and Minecoins, as described in Minecraft’s announcement.
A physical Nintendo Switch 2 edition is also sold at retail as a separate format choice. It is not required to claim the digital offer, and the announced free upgrade is not a free physical copy. Nintendo’s announcement distinguishes the retail physical edition from the digital upgrade path.

Vibrant Visuals is unavailable in some situations, including split-screen and certain Marketplace worlds and content. See Nintendo’s product listing and Minecraft’s feature announcement for those details.

Don’t follow instructions for the old Switch upgrade
The earlier upgrade from Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition to the later Switch release was a different process. Its legacy instructions do not establish how to redeem the 2026 Switch 2 offer. Minecraft’s older update instructions concern that historical release, not this limited-time preorder.
