You can claim GST input tax credit (ITC) on a marketplace purchase only when the purchase passes the same GST tests as any other business purchase. Your business must be GST-registered, the goods or services must be used or intended for business, and you must hold a valid prescribed tax document. The supplier must report the invoice, you must receive the supply, the tax must be paid to the government, and you must file the recipient return. The credit then has to survive checks for personal use, exempt supplies, blocked-credit rules, credit notes, and the 180-day supplier-payment condition.
A marketplace checkout page, order confirmation or payment receipt does not by itself establish ITC. Start with the tax invoice issued by the legal supplier, reconcile it to GSTR-2B, self-assess the statutory restrictions, and report only the eligible amount in GSTR-3B.
What makes a marketplace purchase eligible for GST ITC?
Section 16(1) of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017 (CGST Act) gives a registered person credit for input tax charged on goods or services used or intended to be used in the course or furtherance of business, subject to prescribed conditions and restrictions. The provision says: “Every registered person shall, subject to such conditions and restrictions as may be prescribed and in the manner specified in section 49, be entitled to take credit of input tax charged on any supply of goods or services or both to him which are used or intended to be used in the course or furtherance of his business and the said amount shall be credited to the electronic credit ledger of such person.”

- Tax and return conditions: the tax has been paid to the government and you have furnished the recipient return, in addition to satisfying the other statutory requirements.
- No overriding restriction: the amount is not attributable to personal use, exempt supplies, a blocked-credit category or another restriction under the Act and Rules.
State GST and integrated GST provisions can apply alongside the CGST framework, depending on the supplier, place of supply and nature of the transaction.
Identify who actually issued the tax invoice
A marketplace can be only the purchasing channel. The legal supplier named on the tax invoice is the party whose GSTIN, invoice number and tax details you must reconcile. Do not assume that the platform’s name on an order page is the supplier for ITC purposes.
Documents that do not replace a tax invoice
An order confirmation, payment receipt, delivery notification, cart screen or marketplace sales page can support your records, but none is necessarily the prescribed tax document required for credit. Obtain the supplier’s tax invoice or another document recognised by CBIC Rule 36. Rule 36 covers specified tax invoices, debit notes, import bills of entry and Input Service Distributor documents, subject to the particulars and conditions that apply to each document.

Particulars to check on the invoice
Compare the document with the order and the goods or services actually received. The invoice rules identify particulars such as:
- supplier name, address and GSTIN;
- recipient name, address and GSTIN, where applicable;
- a unique invoice number and invoice date;
- description and quantity or extent of the supply;
- taxable value;
- tax rate and tax amount; and
- place-of-supply details where relevant to the transaction.
Correct the document with the supplier before claiming if the recipient GSTIN, supplier identity, tax amount or other material detail is wrong. Keep the original and any corrected document together so the audit trail explains what changed.
Step-by-step process for claiming marketplace ITC
1. Confirm registration and business use
Verify that the GST registration belongs to the entity making the purchase and was active for the relevant transaction. Then determine how the item will be used. A purchase used wholly for business can proceed to the next checks. If it is partly personal or otherwise non-business, do not claim the private portion. Section 17 requires apportionment where inputs or services are used partly for non-business purposes.
Write a short internal description for each unusual purchase—for example, the project, department or business process that uses it. This is not a substitute for statutory evidence, but it makes the business-purpose decision reproducible.
2. Obtain and validate the prescribed tax document
Download the supplier’s tax invoice from the marketplace account or request it from the supplier. Match the supplier GSTIN, your business name and GSTIN, invoice number and date, description, taxable value, tax rate, tax amount and place-of-supply particulars against the order. Store the invoice in a way that preserves the original file and makes it searchable by supplier, invoice number and tax period.

3. Confirm receipt of the supply
Match the invoice to a delivery record, goods-received note, service completion evidence or another contemporaneous record. For goods delivered in multiple lots or instalments, wait until the final lot or instalment has been received before treating the related credit as available under the section 16 condition.
Do not rely solely on a “delivered” status if the business rejected, returned or never obtained the goods. Resolve that event with the supplier and retain the resulting credit note or replacement invoice.
4. Reconcile the invoice with GSTR-2B
Use the GSTR-2B for the relevant period as a supplier-reporting reconciliation statement. Locate the document and compare:
- supplier GSTIN;
- invoice or debit-note number and date;
- taxable value;
- each applicable tax component and amount; and
- place-of-supply information where it affects the transaction.
GSTR-2B is generated from supplier-filed documents and other specified data. The GST portal describes it as containing B2B invoices, debit and credit notes filed in supplier returns, specified Input Service Distributor information and IGST import data. It separates credit shown as available from credit shown as not available, but the portal also cautions that the displayed scenarios are limited and that other legal restrictions may not appear.
Accordingly, an invoice appearing in GSTR-2B is evidence for reconciliation, not an automatic legal approval. The recipient must still apply the business-use, receipt, payment, exempt-supply and blocked-credit rules.
5. Apply restrictions and make adjustments
Before calculating the claim, remove or apportion amounts affected by:
- personal or other non-business use;
- use in making exempt supplies;
- blocked-credit provisions or their statutory exceptions;
- goods or services not actually received;
- supplier credit notes, returns, cancellations or replacements; and
- any other condition in the CGST Act, Rules or applicable state or integrated GST provisions.
The complete wording and exceptions for blocked credits must be checked against the current section 17(5) text before classifying a particular item. It is unsafe to label every laptop, phone, vehicle, meal, construction cost or similar category as always eligible or always blocked without examining the exact facts and statutory exception.

The system-generated value is based on GSTR-2B, and the portal states that the auto-populated values remain editable. Open the return for the relevant tax period, review the system-populated figures, and report the amount that is legally eligible after your invoice-level review.

Do not claim the entire screen total merely because it is populated. If an invoice is personal, exempt-use, blocked, unpaid under the 180-day rule or otherwise ineligible, exclude it or make the required adjustment. If your books and GSTR-2B differ, investigate the difference and retain the reconciliation rather than silently forcing one figure to match the other.
7. Preserve evidence and monitor supplier payment
Retain the invoice, order or purchase record, proof of receipt, payment evidence, GSTR-2B reconciliation and the filed-return working. A periodic exception list should identify invoices that are missing from GSTR-2B, have mismatched values, relate to returned goods or have not been paid.
How to use GSTR-2B without treating it as approval
GSTR-2B answers an important question: what documents have suppliers and other specified filers reported against your GST registration? It does not answer every question needed for entitlement. The portal’s own guidance says taxpayers may avail ITC based on the ITC indicated in GSTR-2B, subject to availability and eligibility, and immediately cautions that other scenarios can make credit unavailable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen the invoice appears correctly
Check the invoice against your records, confirm receipt and business use, apply apportionment and blocked-credit tests, and then include only the eligible amount in the appropriate GSTR-3B disclosure.
When the invoice is absent
Ask the supplier to verify the return in which the invoice was reported, the GSTIN used, the invoice number and date, and whether a correction or amendment is required. Keep the communication and revised document. Do not treat a marketplace order page as a substitute for supplier reporting and a prescribed tax document.
When the amount does not match
Compare taxable value and each tax component separately. Differences can result from a credit note, partial return, cancellation, quantity change, amendment or a posting in a different period. Claim only the amount supported by the final document and the statutory conditions, and explain the adjustment in your reconciliation.
Invoice-by-invoice decision framework
| Check | Evidence to keep | Decision if the check fails |
|---|---|---|
| Recipient is GST-registered | Registration details and entity records | Do not claim through that registration until the correct registered recipient is established. |
| Supplier and invoice are identifiable | Tax invoice showing supplier GSTIN, invoice number and date | Request a corrected or replacement document; an order confirmation alone is insufficient. |
| Business use is established | Purchase purpose, department or project record | Exclude personal or non-business use; apportion where use is mixed. |
| Goods or services were received | Delivery, goods-received or service-completion evidence | Hold the claim until receipt; for lots, wait for the final lot or instalment. |
| Supplier reporting corresponds | GSTR-2B line and reconciliation | Resolve the supplier or data issue and do not rely on the marketplace page instead. |
| No exempt-use or blocked-credit restriction | Use analysis and statutory review | Exclude, apportion or reverse the affected amount as required. |
| Supplier payment monitored | Bank or ledger payment evidence | Apply the 180-day reversal and interest rule if the required payment is not made. |
| Return disclosure is accurate | GSTR-3B working and filed acknowledgement | Correct the working and report the legally eligible amount, not an unreviewed auto-populated total. |
Business use, exempt supplies and blocked credits
Mixed business and personal use
Section 17 requires the credit attributable to non-business use to be excluded. If a marketplace purchase serves both the business and an owner’s or employee’s private purpose, document a reasonable allocation and claim only the business portion. The allocation should be consistent with how the item is actually used and supported by records.

Taxable and exempt outputs
Where an input or service supports both taxable and exempt supplies, the credit must be apportioned under the statutory rules. A purchase can therefore have a valid tax invoice and still produce only partial eligible ITC.

Blocked-credit categories
Section 17 contains categories for which credit is restricted or blocked, together with exceptions. Because the exact current list and exceptions determine the result, check the complete provision before classifying a specific marketplace item. The invoice’s presence in GSTR-2B does not override section 17.
The 180-day supplier-payment condition
Under the published Rule 37 text, where a recipient has availed ITC but has not paid the supplier the invoice value plus tax within 180 days, the recipient must add the availed credit to output tax liability with applicable interest. After payment is made, the credit may be re-availed under the rule.
Treat this as an ongoing control, not a reason to postpone every otherwise eligible claim automatically. Record the invoice, payment due status and follow-up date. When the 180-day threshold is approaching, either complete payment or calculate the required reversal and interest. When payment is later completed, retain proof and process re-availment in accordance with the current rule and return instructions.
Common marketplace problems and fixes
The platform invoice has no recipient GSTIN
Ask the legal supplier for a tax invoice containing the registered business’s correct details. If the supplier cannot issue the prescribed document, do not treat the checkout receipt as sufficient ITC evidence.
The seller’s GSTIN is different from the marketplace name
This can be normal when the platform hosts independent sellers. Reconcile the GSTIN and legal name shown on the tax invoice, not the branding on the website or app.
The invoice is in GSTR-2B but the item was for personal use
Exclude the personal portion. GSTR-2B reflects reporting; it does not remove the section 17 restriction on non-business use.
The goods were returned after the claim
Obtain the supplier’s credit note or other correcting document, update the purchase ledger and reverse or adjust the related credit as required. Keep the original invoice, return evidence and correction together.

GSTR-3B auto-population is higher than the eligible amount
Reconcile the excess line by line. Remove amounts affected by personal use, exempt supplies, blocked-credit rules, credit notes, non-receipt or another restriction. The portal FAQ says the system-populated values are editable; filing the unreviewed total is not a substitute for self-assessment.
Records and controls for recurring marketplace purchases
Businesses with frequent online purchases should use a simple invoice register rather than relying on the marketplace account history. At minimum, record:
- supplier legal name and GSTIN;
- invoice number and date;
- marketplace order reference;
- taxable value and each tax component;
- business-use classification and any apportionment;
- receipt date or final-lot date;
- GSTR-2B period and match status;
- GSTR-3B reporting period and table;
- credit notes, returns or amendments; and
- supplier payment date and 180-day monitoring status.
Run the reconciliation before preparing each return, then perform a later review for credit notes, returns and overdue supplier balances. Keep access-controlled copies of invoices and proof of receipt so the records remain available if the marketplace account changes or a listing disappears.
Timing and legal updates to verify
Section 16 contains an outer time limit for taking credit, but the exact current section 16(4) wording, exceptions and return instructions should be checked in the consolidated law before setting a filing deadline. Do not rely on an old calendar date copied from an earlier version of the Act.
Likewise, verify the current section 17(5) text before publishing or applying an item-specific blocked-credit conclusion. GST rules and return functionality can change, while the core workflow—valid document, supplier reporting, receipt, self-assessment, accurate GSTR-3B disclosure and payment monitoring—remains the control framework.
A practical example
Wholly business-use purchase
A GST-registered design studio buys equipment through a marketplace. The legal supplier issues an invoice showing the studio’s GSTIN, the studio receives the equipment, the invoice appears in GSTR-2B with matching values, and the equipment is used solely for studio work. After checking that no blocked-credit rule applies and recording the payment, the studio can include the eligible amount in the ordinary inward-supply mapping in GSTR-3B Table 4(A)(5).
Mixed-use purchase
A registered consultancy buys a device used partly for client work and partly for a proprietor’s private activity. The invoice and GSTR-2B match, but the business-use test is mixed. The consultancy must apportion the credit and exclude the private portion rather than claim the full tax shown on the invoice.
Reported but restricted purchase
A supplier reports an invoice correctly and it appears in GSTR-2B, but the purchase is later returned or falls within a blocked-credit category after the statutory test is applied. The portal match does not make the amount claimable. The business must obtain the correcting document where applicable and exclude or reverse the restricted amount.
Final decision rule
Claim marketplace ITC only after the invoice, recipient registration, business use, receipt, supplier reporting, statutory restrictions and return disclosure all agree. GSTR-2B helps you find and reconcile the supplier’s document; it does not replace your legal self-assessment. Keep payment monitoring active after the claim, because failure to pay the invoice value plus tax within 180 days can trigger reversal with interest and later re-availment only after payment under the applicable rule.
