Open the participating game’s live Steam store page, confirm that the promotion is a Free Weekend, note the exact end time shown there, and use the page’s current play or install control to add the temporary package through Steam. Downloading before the deadline lets you play during the event; it does not make the paid game permanently yours. After the event, Steam leaves a library entry but restricts it to uninstalling unless you buy the full version.
What a Steam Free Weekend actually gives you
A Steam Free Weekend is a time-limited promotion for an otherwise paid game. During the event, Steam grants temporary access to the game’s base version so you can download and play it without buying it first. The access is tied to the promotion window, not to the date you installed the files.
Steamworks documentation describes the offer as temporary access to an eligible game, typically over a long four-day weekend. The temporary package uses the base game’s App ID and depots. That is different from a demo, which is distributed as a separate demo app. It is also different from a free-to-play title, which remains available to download and play at no cost without a weekend deadline.

The important consequence is simple: adding the game to your library or finishing the download does not create permanent ownership. Your access continues only while the promotion is active, unless you purchase the full game.

How to verify that the offer is a Free Weekend
Do not rely on a social-media post, an old deal page, or a search result alone. Promotions change, and a game may have had a Free Weekend in the past without having one now.
- Open the game’s current Steam store page in a browser or in the Steam client.
- Read the promotion callout near the game’s purchase and play controls. Confirm that it identifies a Free Weekend or equivalent temporary event rather than a permanent free-to-play release, a demo, or a discount only.
- Check that the offer applies to the base game you intend to play. Downloadable content and special editions may be listed separately and are not automatically included in the temporary package.
- Locate the event’s end date and time on that same page before starting a large download.
If the page shows only a price, a demo option, or a normal purchase button, there may be no active Free Weekend for your account or region. Use the live page as the authority instead of assuming that an announcement still applies.
Check the deadline before you download
Steam says Free Weekends typically run from Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time through Monday at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time. That is a common schedule, not a guarantee for every game or region. The end time displayed on the specific offer is the practical deadline.

Individual events can use different dates, shorter or longer windows, or regional display conversions. Steam’s developer guidance recommends running an event for at least four days so players have time to download and play, but that recommendation does not promise a particular duration to consumers. Steam also says an eligible game can run a Free Weekend once per calendar year; this is an eligibility rule for the promotion, not a promise that every game will offer one.
Plan for download and installation time
Starting a download shortly before the deadline is risky. Installation time depends on the game’s size, your connection, disk speed, available storage, updates, and any queue in the Steam client. The event clock does not pause while files download. Leave enough time to install and launch the game while the offer is still active.

If your local device displays the deadline in a different time zone, compare it with the time shown by Steam rather than manually converting a typical Monday schedule. A countdown or date on the current offer page is more reliable than a general weekend rule.
How to install a Free Weekend game in Steam
The exact wording of Steam’s button can vary by device, language, region, and account state. The reliable path is the participating game’s store page and the Steam client that opens from it.
- Sign in to Steam. Use the account on which you want the temporary license and eventual purchase, if you decide to keep the game.
- Open the participating game’s store page. Confirm the Free Weekend callout and read the displayed end time.
- Use the current play or install action. Select the control Steam presents for the active promotion. Steam may open the desktop client or switch to it to process the temporary package.
- Choose an installation location in the client. Select the library drive and review the required disk space shown by Steam. The store page’s system requirements remain the authority for whether your computer can run the game.
- Wait for the download and installation to finish. Keep the Steam client online long enough for the temporary package and any required updates to complete.
- Launch from your Steam library. Start the game through the installed library entry while the Free Weekend is still within its advertised window.
Steam’s official material establishes that the temporary package appears on the base game’s store page and grants access during the event. It does not define one universal button label or an identical click sequence for every interface, so follow the control currently shown rather than looking for a button with a specific name.
If Steam opens the client but does not start the download
- Return to the game’s store page and verify that the event has not ended.
- Make sure you are signed in to the intended Steam account.
- Look in the library for the game entry and use the action Steam currently offers there.
- Check that the selected library drive has enough free space and that Steam is not paused or offline.
- If the page now shows only a purchase option, the temporary license may no longer be available; verify the displayed deadline before troubleshooting the installation itself.
These checks distinguish an expired promotion from an ordinary client or storage problem. Avoid assuming that a previously installed copy still has a valid license.
What you can do while the Free Weekend is active
Once the temporary package has installed, you can launch and play the game during the event window under the access Steam granted. Treat the end time as a hard cutoff for the license, even if the game files are already on your drive.

Keep the Steam client connected when launching if the game requires Steam to validate access. The store page and the game’s own requirements determine whether particular features, downloadable content, servers, or account links are available; a Free Weekend does not by itself establish that every edition or add-on is included.

Steam’s player-facing explanation is unambiguous: when the Free Weekend ends, the game remains listed in your library, but you can only uninstall it unless you purchase the full version. Steam’s administrative documentation describes the free package being removed from the store page after the event.
In practical terms, three things can all be true at once:
- The game appears in your Steam library because you participated in the event.
- The installed files may still occupy disk space until you remove them.
- Launching the game is no longer available through the temporary access; continued play requires buying the paid game.
Installing early, leaving Steam running, or keeping the files on your drive does not extend the trial. The expiration is controlled by the promotion’s license, not by whether the download completed before the deadline.
Do Steam Free Weekend games stay in your library?
Yes. Steam says the library listing remains after the event, but the post-event action is limited to uninstalling unless you buy the full version. The listing should therefore not be interpreted as proof that you own the game permanently. It records the product associated with the temporary package and gives you a place to remove the installation or purchase the game.

If you later buy the full version, Steam will handle the paid license on the same account. The reviewed platform documentation does not establish a universal rule for save files, achievements, or progress across every game, so do not assume that a particular game will retain or transfer all progress after purchase. Can you buy the game after trying it?

Check the live page instead of assuming that every event includes a discount or that a particular price will remain after the cutoff.

The offer ended while the game was downloading
Completion of the download does not extend access. Once the event ends, Steam can leave the game in your library while disabling play under the temporary license. Check the store page for the current purchase option and decide whether to buy the full version or uninstall the files.

The game is in the library, but Steam will not launch it
First compare the current time with the deadline shown on the offer page. A library entry after expiration is expected and does not indicate permanent ownership. If the event is still active, reopen the store page, confirm the promotion applies to your account, and use the client action presented there.
The page shows a demo instead of a Free Weekend
A demo is a separate app. Confirm the product name and the promotion callout before downloading so you do not mistake a demo for temporary access to the full base game.
