To get a Fortnite Item Shop skin, buy it in Fortnite’s Item Shop or through the online shop, then equip it from the Locker in the lobby. Before you confirm a purchase, check the offer and its displayed V-Bucks cost. If you buy the wrong item, avoid using or equipping it while you check whether you can cancel the purchase.

How to get a skin from the Fortnite Item Shop

Epic says Item Shop cosmetics can be purchased in Fortnite or through its online shop at fortnite.com/shop. The cited guidance does not establish a difference in catalog or price between the two routes, so choose the one that is convenient and make sure you are using the account on which you want the cosmetic.

  1. Launch Fortnite and open the Item Shop, or visit the online shop and sign in.
  2. Find the skin you want and review the offer, including the V-Bucks amount shown.
  3. Confirm the purchase using the prompts presented in the game or online shop.

Skin prices and shop availability can vary by offer and rotation. Check the current listing rather than relying on a price or availability stated elsewhere. Epic’s cited purchase guidance does not document every confirmation-screen prompt, so follow the labels shown in your version of Fortnite.

Choose where to make the purchase

The in-game Item Shop and Epic’s online Item Shop are the two routes Epic identifies for buying cosmetics. The game route is convenient if you are already playing and can review the offer there. The online route lets you visit the shop at fortnite.com/shop and sign in. Epic’s guidance does not establish that one route has a different catalog or price, so do not assume the web shop is cheaper or has different skins.

Fortnite eGift Card
  • Redeemable on accounts in the United States and in U.S. Dollars.
  • Gift card must be redeemed at EpicGames.com/redeem. This gift card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly on a console device (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, etc.)
  • If you play Fortnite experiences on a console device, you need to link your Epic Games account to your console account(s) so items purchased at Fortnite.com/item-shop appear across all of your linked accounts
  • Requires internet connection, valid Epic account and prior acceptance of the terms
  • Redemption: Online

Whichever route you use, pay attention to the account context. On the website, sign in to the Epic account you intend to use. In Fortnite, check that you are playing on the intended account before you confirm. If you use more than one account or platform, this is a useful moment to slow down: an item purchased on the wrong account may not be where you expect when you open the Locker on another account. The official steps do not describe account transfers, so do not count on being able to move a purchase afterward.

Review the offer before confirming

Open the current listing for the skin and check the displayed V-Bucks amount before completing the purchase. Do not rely on a remembered price, a screenshot from an older shop rotation, or a price quoted in an unrelated guide. The current offer on your screen is the relevant one. The cited Epic instructions confirm the purchase route but do not provide a universal skin price or enumerate every confirmation prompt, so follow the exact labels and details shown to you.

A skin purchase and equipping the skin are separate actions. Buying the offer obtains the cosmetic; selecting it in the Locker is how you choose to use it. If you are not certain you want the item, do not treat equipping it as a necessary part of completing the purchase. In particular, Epic’s cancellation rules make use and equipping important: using or equipping an item can remove the Cancel Purchase option during its 24-hour window.

Do you need V-Bucks or a card?

The shop displays a V-Bucks amount for the offer. If you are considering a V-Bucks card to fund a purchase, Epic’s terms refer to physical or virtual cards that may add credits to an Epic account. That does not make a card necessary to equip a skin you already own, and the cited terms do not establish the availability of a particular card in every country. Check the card terms and regional availability that apply to you before purchasing one. A card is an optional way to fund a purchase, not a step in the Locker process.

How to equip a skin in Fortnite

After the purchase, return to the lobby and open the Locker. Epic’s support instructions say to access the Locker from the lobby, select the item or cosmetic, and click back to equip it. In practical terms, the purchase puts the cosmetic among the items available to select; the Locker is where you choose the skin you want to use.

  1. Return to the Fortnite lobby.
  2. Open Locker.
  3. Select the skin or cosmetic you want to use.
  4. Click back to equip the selected item.

The Locker is where you select an owned cosmetic; buying the skin and equipping it are separate actions. If you are trying to preserve the option to reverse a mistaken purchase, do not equip the newly bought item before reviewing the cancellation rules below.

Where is the Fortnite Locker?

Epic’s instruction places the Locker in the lobby. Return to the lobby first, then look for and open Locker. Interface labels and placement may vary as Fortnite changes, so use the current on-screen menu labels rather than relying on a button location shown in an old image or video. Once inside, select the cosmetic you want and click back, as Epic’s instructions describe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the skin is not immediately obvious, check that you have opened the Locker on the account used to make the purchase and that you are selecting the cosmetic rather than looking for it in the Item Shop again. The shop is where you browse offers; the Locker is where you select the skin you own. The cited instructions do not document platform-specific button names, so follow the controls shown by your version of the game.

Can you equip the skin right after buying it?

The normal sequence is to buy the cosmetic, return to the lobby, open Locker, select the skin, and click back. However, if the purchase may have been accidental and you want to preserve the cancellation option, pause before using or equipping it. Epic’s Cancel Purchase eligibility requires that the item has not been used or equipped in any game mode. Once you have decided to keep the skin, use the Locker steps above to select it.

If you bought the wrong skin

Epic provides two self-service purchase-reversal routes for some Item Shop purchases: Cancel Purchase and, after that short cancellation period, a Return Ticket for eligible purchases. They have different time limits and conditions.

Option Time limit Key condition Account limit
Cancel Purchase Within 24 hours of purchase The item must not have been used or equipped in any game mode. Each item can be canceled only once.
Return Ticket Eligible items purchased within the last 30 days Applies after the 24-hour cancellation period; eligibility and exclusions apply. Accounts start with 3 tickets, receive 1 every 365 days, and can hold up to 3.

These time limits and ticket rules are those described by Epic Games Support. Cancel Purchase is the option to check first if you noticed a mistake promptly: using or equipping the item can make it ineligible during the 24-hour period. A Return Ticket is limited, so consider its availability before confirming a return. Epic says Support cannot grant extra tickets.

Cancel Purchase: act within 24 hours

Epic describes Cancel Purchase as a way to undo an Item Shop purchase made with V-Bucks by mistake. You have up to 24 hours after the purchase, but only if the item has not been used or equipped in any game mode. The item can be canceled only once. This is not a general grace period that applies after you have tried the cosmetic: if you want to check this option, leave the item unused and unequipped and act promptly.

The 24-hour option is distinct from a Return Ticket. It is the first route to check for a recent mistake, and its key eligibility condition is the item’s use status. If you have already used or equipped the skin, the Cancel Purchase condition may no longer be met. If the 24-hour period has passed, check whether the purchase is eligible for a Return Ticket instead; a ticket has a longer purchase-age window but uses a limited account resource.

Return Tickets: the later option is limited

Eligible purchases made within the last 30 days may qualify for a Return Ticket after the 24-hour cancellation period. Each account starts with three tickets. Epic says an account receives one ticket every 365 days and may hold no more than three at a time. In other words, using a ticket reduces the available balance, and the account cannot stockpile more than three. Epic Support cannot add extra tickets.

Before choosing this route, consider whether the item is within the 30-day window, whether the purchase type is eligible, and whether you want to spend one of the tickets available on your account. The 30-day limit does not mean that every purchase can be returned for 30 days: exclusions apply, and the Return Ticket route is separate from the 24-hour Cancel Purchase option. Check what the current menu offers for the particular purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Items that may not qualify

Epic lists exclusions from these self-service V-Bucks return options. The excluded purchase types include:

  • Passes, pass levels, and premium reward tracks
  • Gifted purchases and cosmetic bundles
  • Level Up Quest Packs
  • Save the World loot llamas and event or weekly items
  • Purchases made in developer-made islands

These exclusions matter even when a purchase is recent. A purchase being within 24 hours or 30 days does not by itself make it eligible; the purchase type and the other conditions still matter. In particular, do not assume that a gifted purchase, bundle, pass, or item bought in a developer-made island can be reversed through the same menu as an eligible Item Shop cosmetic. If you do not see an item as an available selection, review Epic’s current eligibility information for that purchase type.

Use the in-game return or cancellation menu

Epic’s current in-game route is available from Fortnite’s support and refunds area. Open the game and follow these menu steps:

Rank #3
Fortnite Physical Gift Card
  • An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
  • If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
  • The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
  • Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
  • Redemption: Online
  1. Open Fortnite and select the Player Icon.
  2. Open the menu and choose Support and Refunds.
  3. Choose Return or cancel purchase.
  4. Select the item and confirm.

Read the selection and confirmation details before completing the action. If the purchase was made by mistake, make sure you have selected the correct item. Keep the Cancel Purchase condition in mind: do not use or equip the item while you are checking the 24-hour option. For an older eligible purchase, consider your Return Ticket balance and the fact that completing that route consumes one of the limited tickets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the online return or cancellation menu

You can also use the online route described by Epic:

  1. Sign in at fortnite.com/shop.
  2. Open the Player Icon and choose Return and Cancel Purchases.
  3. Select Show Purchases, then choose the item.
  4. Confirm the action.

Use the Epic account associated with the purchase, and check that the correct item is selected before confirming. The online route is an alternative to navigating the support-and-refunds menu in Fortnite; the cited guidance does not establish that either route provides different eligibility or return terms.

Menu wording or placement can change as Fortnite’s interface changes. Follow the current labels displayed on your screen; the steps above reflect Epic’s support instructions.

Cancel Purchase or Return Ticket: which should you try?

If the purchase was made within the last 24 hours and the skin has not been used or equipped, check Cancel Purchase first. It applies to a recent mistake and does not use one of the limited Return Tickets. If more than 24 hours have passed, check whether the purchase was made within the last 30 days and whether it is eligible for a Return Ticket. That option has a longer time window but consumes a ticket, and your account may have only a small number available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Neither option is guaranteed for every purchase. The purchase must fall within the relevant time limit, meet the use or ticket conditions, and not be one of the excluded purchase types. Check the option shown for the selected item in the support menu rather than assuming that the same return path applies to all Fortnite purchases.

What to check if returned V-Bucks are missing

Epic says refunds are usually returned within a few minutes. If the V-Bucks do not appear, first check that you are viewing the correct account and platform balance. A purchase funded from a platform balance may be returned there instead of to the shared wallet, so check the balance associated with the platform used for the purchase.

Do not assume that a return failed just because you do not see the amount in the balance you first checked. Confirm which account was used to make the purchase, then check the relevant platform balance as well as the balance you normally view. Epic’s support information says the funds may return to the platform balance used to pay rather than the shared wallet. Refunds are usually processed within a few minutes, but the cited guidance does not promise an identical display location for every payment route.

Do you need a V-Bucks card to equip a skin?

No. A card is not required to equip a skin you already own. Epic’s terms refer to physical or virtual V-Bucks cards that may add credits to an Epic account, but card availability and country compatibility are not established here. If you need to fund a purchase, check the applicable card terms and availability for your region before buying one.

Funding a purchase and equipping a cosmetic are separate tasks. A card may be one way to add credits, subject to its terms, but the Locker steps do not require a card. If the skin is already owned on the account you are using, go to the lobby and select it in Locker.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming a remembered price is current. Review the V-Bucks amount on the live offer before confirming; prices and availability vary by offer and shop rotation.
  • Buying while signed into the wrong account. Check the account context before purchase so you know where to look for the cosmetic afterward.
  • Equipping a skin before checking a mistake. If you may want Cancel Purchase, keep the item unused and unequipped during its 24-hour window.
  • Assuming every purchase type can be returned. Passes, gifted purchases, cosmetic bundles, and other listed categories are excluded from these self-service options.
  • Expecting unlimited Return Tickets. Accounts start with three, regenerate one every 365 days, and can hold a maximum of three; Support cannot grant more.
  • Looking only at the shared wallet after a return. A platform-funded purchase may be refunded to the platform balance used for payment.
