The safest way to get a free Nintendo Switch 2 game is to start with Nintendo’s official Free-to-start games catalog for your country. You can also find free demos in Nintendo eShop, claim a legitimate promotional download code, or register a game included with a hardware bundle. These options are different from paid Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers, which are not currently available for new purchase in the U.S.
Choose the Nintendo Account that should own the game before downloading or redeeming anything. A code or bundle entitlement is tied to that account and normally cannot be moved later. The instructions below cover each legitimate path, regional limits, deadlines, and the fixes for the most common download problems.

Start with Nintendo’s official free-game listings
Open Nintendo’s Free-to-start games page for the country associated with your Nintendo Account. Nintendo describes these as games you can download and start playing for free on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch systems. The catalog is the best place to distinguish a real no-cost download from a page advertising a discount, a paid code, or an in-game purchase.

“Free-to-start” does not mean that every item, character, expansion, currency pack, or later feature is free. Open the individual game listing and read its purchase and online-service notes before installing. If you are outside the United States, use Nintendo’s local store rather than assuming that a U.S. listing is offered in your region. Nintendo’s UK eShop overview, for example, separates free games and applications from free demos; other countries can show different titles and terms.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Check these details on each listing
- System support: confirm that the listing supports Nintendo Switch 2, not only the original Switch.
- Price label: a zero-price download is different from a game that requires a voucher, a subscription, or a purchase at checkout.
- Optional spending: look for in-game purchases, paid downloadable content, or premium currencies.
- Regional availability: the store page for your country controls whether you can claim the title.
- Storage: check the listed download size and leave enough free space on the console or compatible expansion storage.
Know which kind of “free” offer you have
Before entering a code or selecting a purchase button, identify the offer type. The ownership rules, deadlines, and Nintendo Switch Online requirements are not interchangeable.
| Offer type | What you receive | Is it genuinely free? | Account and timing considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free-to-start game | A game downloaded from the official catalog | The initial download is free; optional purchases may apply | Availability and features vary by country and listing |
| Free demo | A limited trial of a paid game | Yes, for the demo content | Progress and features depend on the individual title |
| Promotional download code | A specific game or add-on granted by a retailer, event, or promotion | Only if you received the code without paying for the entitlement | Redeems to the Nintendo Account selected during redemption; codes can have regional or expiry restrictions |
| Digital-game bundle entitlement | A game included with qualifying hardware or software | Included with the bundle, but the bundle itself is a purchase | May require eShop registration or a download code; follow the bundle’s instructions |
| Nintendo Switch Game Voucher | A paid entitlement exchangeable for an eligible game | No. It is not a free promotion | Existing vouchers have membership, region, expiry, and title restrictions |
| Retailer control number | An order or receipt reference | Not necessarily a Nintendo download code | Use the actual Nintendo Download Code when both numbers appear |
Download a free-to-start game or demo
For a title listed as free in your regional store, the normal eShop download path is the simplest option. Use the account that should retain the game, even if several people use the console.
- Connect the Switch 2 to the internet and open Nintendo eShop from the HOME Menu.
- Select the user icon for the Nintendo Account that should own the download.
- Search for the title, or open the regional free-to-start catalog and select the game.
- Read the listing for optional purchases, age limits, online requirements, and system compatibility.
- Select the button to download or obtain the free software and accept any confirmation screens.
- Return to the HOME Menu. The game icon appears while the download runs; a progress indicator shows its status.
Do not treat a price reduction, a “free trial” of a subscription, or a page asking for Game Vouchers as a free game. If the listing shows a charge, stop and verify the title and account before confirming.

A legitimate download code is redeemed in Nintendo eShop. Nintendo’s code instructions distinguish the Download Code from a retailer’s Control Number when both are printed on a receipt or card. Enter the Nintendo code, not the store’s internal reference.
- Open Nintendo eShop from the HOME Menu.
- Select the user whose Nintendo Account should own the game. Check the account name carefully; Nintendo says the software belongs to the account linked to this selected user and cannot later be transferred to another account.
- Choose Enter Code in the eShop menu.
- Type the 16-character Download Code. Follow the letter and number prompts exactly and do not add spaces unless the screen inserts them.
- Confirm the title and account shown by eShop, then accept the redemption.
- Allow the download to begin. Nintendo says redeemed software appears on the HOME Menu with a download-status bar; you can start it after installation completes.
Codes can be limited to a country or region, a particular product, or a stated redemption period. A code that came with a promotion is not automatically valid worldwide. Check the promotion’s printed or online terms before assuming that a failure means the code is defective.
If the code seems to have been used already
First look across the HOME Menu for the game icon and its download status. Then check the other users on the console and the Nintendo Accounts they use. Nintendo notes that a code can appear to have failed when another user already redeemed it. If the software is not present, repeat the check while signed in to the account that originally entered the code, keeping the receipt or promotion details available for support.
Redeem a code online instead
Nintendo also provides an online redemption page: How to Redeem a Nintendo eShop Download Code Online. This is useful when the console is unavailable, but it has a prerequisite: the Nintendo Account must have opened Nintendo eShop on a Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch at least once.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Nintendo’s official online code-redemption page and sign in with the Nintendo Account that should own the game.
- Enter the Download Code exactly as issued and submit it.
- Review the product and account details before confirming.
- Confirm the redemption. The software is associated with that account and will download to its linked console when the console is connected and able to receive it.
- On the Switch 2 HOME Menu, watch for the title icon and download progress.
Do not use a third-party “code checker” or give your Nintendo Account password to a promotion site. Nintendo’s own redemption page is the appropriate online route.

Register a game included with a Switch 2 bundle
A bundle can include a conventional Download Code or a game that must be registered through eShop. Inspect the bundle packaging, insert, or product page to determine which method applies. Do not assume that a game shown in a bundle advertisement has already been added to your account.
When the bundle supplies a Download Code
Use the console or online code steps above, selecting the account that should own the bundled game. Keep the bundle documentation until the title appears on the HOME Menu.
When the bundle supplies an account-registered game
Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch Digital Game Bundle FAQ describes this registration path:
- Connect the console to the internet and open Nintendo eShop.
- Select the bundled game or bundle entry shown by eShop.
- Choose the Nintendo Account that should receive the entitlement.
- Select Download and wait for the game to appear on the HOME Menu.
Because an account-registered entitlement is attached during this process, verify the user selection before confirming. A different family member’s account may not be able to use the game as its owner later.
Why Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers are not a free-game shortcut
Game Vouchers are paid entitlements, not free promotional codes. Nintendo’s U.S. Game Vouchers FAQ currently says that additional vouchers can no longer be purchased. This status is dated to the information available on October 13, 2026; check Nintendo’s support page if you are reading later.
People who already have an unused voucher may still be able to exchange it, but all of these conditions matter:
- An active, paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is required.
- The voucher expires one year, or 365 days, after the date of purchase.
- It cannot be exchanged for a game exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
- It must be used in the region where it was purchased.
- Only the Nintendo Account that purchased the voucher can redeem it.
Those restrictions mean a voucher is neither a free offer nor a general-purpose code to share with another account.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix a download that does not start
1. Confirm the account and user
Canceling and retrying on the wrong user does not move ownership. Return to eShop, note the selected user’s Nintendo Account, and make sure it is the account intended to own the game. For a code, also check whether another user already redeemed it.
2. Look for the title on the HOME Menu
Nintendo displays redeemed software with a download status bar. The icon may be waiting behind other downloads rather than missing. Open the HOME Menu and inspect the queue before entering the code again.
3. Check available memory
Nintendo says the console must have enough memory space for the game. Compare the listing’s required space with the free space shown in the console’s storage settings, remove unused software if appropriate, or use compatible expansion storage. Do not buy a card until you have confirmed that it meets the current Switch 2 requirements.
4. Check region and offer validity
A code, voucher, or free listing can be restricted by country. Use the eShop region associated with the Nintendo Account and read the promotion’s expiry terms. A U.S. code generally cannot be assumed to work in a different country, and an expired voucher cannot be revived by changing the console region.
5. Verify that the product is eligible
Game Vouchers apply only to eligible titles and never to Switch 2-exclusive games under Nintendo’s current FAQ. A retailer control number is not a Download Code, and a paid product page is not a free promotion. Recheck the offer type before trying another redemption path.
6. Retry with a stable connection
Keep the console connected to the internet and leave it powered on or in its supported download state. If the online redemption page confirms the code but the console shows nothing, open eShop with the same account and check the HOME Menu again before contacting Nintendo Support.
A quick decision checklist
- Want a no-cost game now? Use your country’s official Free-to-start games catalog or the free-demo section of eShop.
- Have a promotional code? Select the intended user, choose Enter Code, and use the Nintendo Download Code rather than a retailer control number.
- Have a bundle? Determine whether it supplies a code or requires eShop registration, then attach it to the correct Nintendo Account.
- Have an old Game Voucher? Confirm paid Nintendo Switch Online membership, the 365-day expiry, purchase region, purchasing account, and title eligibility.
- Nothing downloads? Check the HOME Menu queue, the account that redeemed the offer, regional terms, and available storage.
What to expect after a successful claim
The game remains associated with the Nintendo Account used for the free download, code, or bundle registration. The HOME Menu icon and download indicator are the immediate confirmation; a missing icon does not by itself prove that a code was rejected. Keep a record of the account and promotion terms, especially for offers with an expiry date or regional restriction.
