Claim the game first at Amazon’s current offers page, then follow the specific offer’s code or storefront instructions. On Steam Deck, the documented local-install route is to use Heroic Games Launcher in SteamOS Desktop Mode, sign in to the account that received the game, install it, and add it to Steam for Game Mode. The result depends on the offer’s region, storefront and the individual game’s Proton compatibility; not every Prime title runs on Deck.
What Prime Gaming gives you—and what it does not
Prime members receive a rotating selection of PC games at no additional charge. Those downloadable PC offers are different from games included in Amazon Luna’s cloud catalog. A downloadable offer gives you ownership or a license through the storefront named on the offer card, so you can install the game locally with a compatible launcher. A Luna-only title runs on Amazon’s servers and is not a normal SteamOS installation.
Amazon’s Luna explainer, updated September 29, 2026, describes the Prime PC selection and Luna access as separate benefits. The distinction matters on a handheld: a local PC entitlement can potentially be installed to the Deck’s storage, while a cloud title requires a supported Luna region, an internet connection and streaming access. Receiving a Prime benefit does not automatically mean that the game is downloadable, a Steam game or usable offline.

Step 1: Find and claim the current offer
Start from Amazon’s current claims page: luna.amazon.com/claims. Sign in with the Amazon account that has the eligible Prime membership, then inspect the full offer card before selecting the claim button.
- Open the claims page. Visit the page above in a desktop browser or the Deck’s Desktop Mode browser. If the page redirects, confirm that the displayed account is the one with Prime.
- Choose the game. Read the title, country notice, claim deadline and the named storefront. Do not assume the game is a Steam title just because you intend to play it on Steam Deck.
- Follow the offer-specific action. Select the button Amazon provides. You might be sent to a storefront account-linking page, shown a redeemable code, or told to claim the title in Amazon’s own games library.
- Complete any second sign-in. If the offer opens another store, sign in to the account where you want the license to live. A code redeemed on the wrong account generally cannot be moved later.
- Save the result. Keep the code, redemption confirmation and the name of the account or storefront that now owns the game. You may need that information when signing in to Heroic.
- Check the entitlement before leaving. Open the destination store’s library or account page and verify that the game appears. This catches an account-linking mistake while the claim page and confirmation details are still available.
Amazon’s older Prime Gaming explanations mention distribution through stores such as GOG and Epic Games Store, Legacy Games and the Amazon Games app. That list is background, not a promise about today’s catalog. The current offer card determines what you receive. Some cards also describe a limited claim period even though the license remains in the destination library afterward; keep the confirmation so you can distinguish a missed claim from a later installation problem.
Identify the game’s actual access route
Before installing anything on the Deck, classify the offer. This prevents the common mistake of trying to redeem a non-Steam code in Steam or attempting to install a cloud-only title locally.

Never describe a claim as a Steam redemption unless the offer specifically supplies a Steam key. The same game can appear through different stores in different countries, and the Deck steps change with the store. Compare routes on four practical axes: what kind of entitlement you receive, whether your country is eligible, whether Heroic supports that storefront, and how the individual game behaves with SteamOS and Proton. No store is universally best; the offer and title determine the sensible route.
Prepare SteamOS in Desktop Mode
SteamOS is Linux-based. Valve’s Desktop Mode lets you install software outside the normal Steam library, while Proton translates Windows game technology for many titles. Proton is a compatibility layer, not a universal emulator: anti-cheat, launchers, codecs, copy protection and game-specific settings can still prevent a title from starting.
You do not need a dock, special controller or particular storage accessory for the documented setup. You do need the Deck charged enough for a large download, a stable connection and enough free storage for the game and its compatibility files. Exact disk requirements come from the store listing and game, not from Prime membership or Heroic.
- Press the Steam button, choose Power, and select Switch to Desktop.
- Connect to a reliable network and open the SteamOS Discover software center from the desktop taskbar or application menu.
- Search for Heroic Games Launcher, open its listing and select Install. Let Discover finish before launching it.
- Start Heroic from the application menu. Heroic’s Steam Deck documentation supports adding the launcher or installed games to Steam so they can be started from Game Mode.
Discover handles the normal Linux installation and updates for Heroic. If it cannot find the application, check that Discover’s repositories have loaded and that the Deck is online; do not download an arbitrary Windows installer as a substitute.

Do not treat the Windows Amazon Games installer as a supported SteamOS app. Running a Windows executable through an improvised shortcut can require a separate prefix, runner and manual updates; the documented Deck workflow for Amazon-, Epic- and GOG-linked libraries is Heroic.
Sign in to Heroic and install the claimed game
Heroic supports Amazon, Epic and GOG library sign-ins on Linux and Steam Deck. Use the account that actually received the Prime offer, not merely an account with the same email address on another service.
- Open Heroic and select the store matching the claim: Amazon, Epic or GOG.
- Complete the store’s browser authentication. If the login opens outside Heroic, approve the request and return to the launcher until your library loads.
- Open the library view and search for the claimed title. If it is absent, stop and verify the claim account and storefront before reinstalling anything.
- Select the game, choose Install, and pick an available library location with enough free space. Heroic will download the files and create the game’s prefix.
- When Heroic offers a compatibility tool, leave the recommended option in place for the first attempt. Proton-GE and other runners can be selected per game when the default fails, but changing runners is a troubleshooting step rather than a guarantee.
- Wait for installation and any first-run prerequisites to finish inside Heroic. Do not close the launcher while it is writing files or importing a cloud save.
- Record the installation location if you may need to inspect files or recreate the shortcut. A non-Steam entry points to that location and can break if the folder is moved without updating Heroic.
A successful download proves only that the store delivered the files. It does not prove that the game’s launcher, graphics API, online services or controller support will work on your particular Deck. A title can install correctly yet fail at its first login, require a different runner, or work only in single-player.
Add the game to Steam and launch it from Game Mode
Heroic can integrate installed titles with Steam. In Desktop Mode, open the game’s menu in Heroic and choose the option to add it to Steam, or use Heroic’s Steam integration settings. Confirm that the game appears in your Steam library.

- Close or minimize Heroic and open the Steam desktop client.
- Check Library for the new non-Steam entry. If it is missing, repeat Heroic’s Add to Steam action and restart Steam.
- Return to Game Mode with Return to Gaming Mode on the desktop.
- Open the library entry and press Play. The first launch may take longer while Proton creates its compatibility files.
- Test the title briefly before changing several settings. Confirm that menus, controls, audio, video and the expected online or offline mode all function.
Keep Heroic installed even after adding a shortcut. Updates, account authentication, cloud saves and runner changes may still need to be performed in Heroic’s desktop interface. The Steam entry is a convenient launch point, not a conversion of the license into a Steam entitlement.
Choose a compatibility setting when a game needs one
There is no single Proton version that is best for every Prime title. Start with the runner Heroic recommends, then change only one variable at a time so you can identify what fixed or broke the launch.
- Game starts normally: keep the working runner and avoid unnecessary launch options.
- Game opens, then closes: try another Proton or Proton-GE version in Heroic’s game settings, relaunch, and allow shader or prefix setup to complete.
- Launcher appears but the game does not: check whether the title depends on a separate Windows launcher or an anti-cheat service that does not support Proton. A different runner may not solve a service-level restriction.
- Video or audio is broken: test a different runner and the game’s rendering mode. Some titles require a DirectX-to-Vulkan translation path; others behave better with a native Vulkan option when one exists.
- Controls are wrong: configure the Steam Input layout for the added shortcut. This changes controller mapping, not the game’s underlying compatibility.
- Performance is inconsistent: lower the game’s own resolution or quality settings first and test again. Do not assume a higher Proton version will improve frame rate; compatibility and performance are separate questions.
Compatibility is title-specific. Amazon, Heroic and Valve do not establish that every rotating Prime game will run, reach its expected frame rate or support online play on Deck. Check current community compatibility reports for the exact title and version, but treat them as evidence to test rather than a guarantee.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
The offer is not visible
Check the country associated with the Amazon account and compare the current date with the offer’s claim window. Amazon explicitly says offers vary by country. Sign out and back in if the page shows a different account, and inspect the offer card for an eligibility requirement before assuming the game was removed. A Prime subscription in one region does not necessarily unlock the same catalog in another.

Confirm that the code belongs to the displayed region and the named storefront. Copy it without spaces, use the redemption page specified by Amazon, and verify that it has not already been redeemed. If the code was claimed on another account, Heroic cannot transfer that license. Do not repeatedly submit a code to different stores; a Steam code, GOG code and Epic code are not interchangeable.
The game is missing from Heroic
Look at the storefront named in the confirmation email or claim page. A GOG claim will not appear in an Epic library, and an Amazon Games entitlement may not be exposed by every launcher version. Re-authenticate the matching account in Heroic, refresh the library, and check the store’s own website or client for the entitlement. If the offer is cloud-only, its absence from a downloadable library is expected.
The Amazon Games installer is an EXE file
AmazonGamesSetup.exe is a Windows installer. SteamOS does not provide a native installation path for it, and Amazon’s Windows instructions do not establish official SteamOS support. Prefer a current Heroic-supported library route; if the offer has no such route, treat local Deck installation as unconfirmed rather than forcing the installer through random compatibility settings.
The shortcut launches back to Steam
Return to Desktop Mode and launch the title from Heroic once. If it works there, remove and recreate the Steam shortcut through Heroic’s integration, then restart Steam. If it fails in Heroic too, the issue is the game’s runner, prefix or service rather than the shortcut.

Open the title in Heroic and perform updates from the original store. Confirm that cloud-save synchronization is enabled for that store and that the game is being launched under the same account used for the claim. A Steam shortcut does not convert a GOG, Epic or Amazon license into a Steam license. If a save is important, test synchronization in the original launcher before deleting or recreating a prefix.
Online play fails while single-player works
Check the game’s anti-cheat and service requirements. Proton can launch the executable while an online service still blocks Linux clients. A runner change cannot override a server-side restriction, so verify support for the title’s current version before spending time on launch options.

Luna cloud games versus downloadable PC games
Amazon describes Luna as a separate, cloud-delivered catalog. Cloud play sends video to the Deck’s browser or supported Luna client while input travels back to Amazon; it does not download the Windows game to SteamOS. Amazon also limits Luna availability to specified countries, while Prime’s rotating PC offers are a separate benefit. Confirm which access mode the offer supplies before planning storage, Proton settings or an offline installation.
If the offer is Luna-only, follow Amazon’s Luna setup and regional requirements instead of claiming a missing PC key. Streaming quality depends on the network path and service availability; installing Heroic will not turn a Luna entitlement into a local file. Conversely, a downloadable PC claim does not automatically grant Luna access.

Can every Prime Gaming game be played on Steam Deck?
No. The offer must provide a downloadable entitlement through a storefront Heroic or another compatible route, and the individual game must work with SteamOS and Proton. Some titles fail because of launchers, anti-cheat, copy protection or unsupported services.
Do I redeem every Prime claim in Steam?

The claim and launcher steps are repeatable; compatibility, performance and online-service support must be judged per title. If the offer is cloud-only, use Luna instead of attempting a local Steam Deck install.

Claim each Prime offer through Amazon’s current instructions, identify where the license actually lives, and use Heroic from SteamOS Desktop Mode for supported Amazon-, Epic- or GOG-linked libraries. Add the installed game to Steam for Game Mode, but test it as an individual Proton title: a Prime claim is not automatically a Steam key, and Luna cloud access is not a local Deck installation.
