To claim a free-to-play game on Steam, sign in to the Steam account you want to keep it on, open the game’s official Steam store page, and use the page’s free download or install action. After Steam registers the title to that account, it should appear in that account’s Library. If it does not, check the signed-in account, Library filters, and Hidden Games before reinstalling or troubleshooting anything else.
Steam describes free-to-play games as free to download and play without requiring a subscription or credit card. Some games sell optional items, but Steam says you are not required to buy them to play or progress. The important distinction is that a genuine Steam entitlement belongs to an account; downloading files or creating a shortcut alone does not establish ownership.
What “claiming” a free Steam game actually does
A free-to-play Steam game is an account entitlement, not merely a file on your computer. When you add the title through Steam, the game is associated with the Steam account currently signed in. You can then install it on compatible devices by signing in to that same account.

Steam’s definition is straightforward: “Free to play games are free to download and play.” That does not mean every offer labelled “free” has the same terms. An ongoing free-to-play release, a time-limited trial, a promotional weekend, and a game distributed through a key are different cases.

- Limited promotion or trial: Access may end when the promotion ends. Do not assume a trial creates a permanent entitlement.
- Steam key: A valid retail or digital key must be activated through Steam’s product-activation process.
- Non-Steam shortcut: A shortcut to a program already installed on your computer. It is not a Steam ownership claim.
“Claim” is therefore shorthand for adding the title through the Steam listing so Steam recognizes it for the account. It does not mean that every part of the game is free forever, nor does it transfer the title between accounts. If you later use another Steam account, that account has its own separate Library and entitlements.
Before you add the game
Use the account you intend to keep
Steam’s Library lists games registered to the signed-in account. If you have multiple accounts, check the account name or profile before adding or installing the title. Claiming the game while signed in elsewhere will not place it in the Library of your preferred account.
This check matters even if several people use the same computer. The installation location on the computer is not the same thing as the account record. If the title is added while another person’s account is active, signing into your own account later may show no entitlement even though the files are already present.

Find the title through Steam’s store or client search and open its official game page. This reduces the chance of downloading an unrelated launcher or confusing a free trial with a permanent free-to-play listing. Steam’s current client and website labels can change, so follow the action presented on the title page rather than relying on an old screenshot or a specific button name.
Check the exact title and, where shown, the developer or publisher information. Similarly named products can include a soundtrack, demo, sequel, or unrelated application. The page’s access wording is more important than a search-result snippet: it tells you whether the current offer is free to play, paid, or temporary.
Understand what “free” covers
The free-to-play designation covers downloading and playing the game. It does not promise that every character, cosmetic, expansion, currency, or service is free. Steam says players are under no obligation to purchase anything from the Steam Store in order to play and progress, but the individual game can still offer optional purchases.
Read the listing carefully if the title has several editions or bundled content. A free base game may appear beside paid downloadable content, a supporter pack, or a premium edition. Selecting one of those products is not the same as adding the free-to-play title.

- Open Steam and sign in. Confirm that the account shown in the client is the one where you want the game registered.
- Search for the title. Use Steam’s search and select the game’s official store page. Check the title, developer or publisher information, and the page’s pricing or access description so you do not select a similarly named product.
- Confirm that it is currently free to play. A page may instead show a purchase price, a time-limited trial, or another access condition. If the listing is a promotion, read its end date and entitlement wording before proceeding.
- Choose the page’s free download, play, or install action. Steam may present different labels depending on whether the client is installed, whether the game is already registered, and whether you are using the website or desktop client. The important step is to add or install the title from its Steam listing, not to create a desktop shortcut manually.
- Accept any confirmation Steam displays. If Steam asks where to install the game, select an available library location and review the required disk space shown by Steam. The download itself can be postponed; postponing installation does not change which account receives the entitlement once the title has been added.
- Let Steam complete registration or installation. A download in progress is not proof that the account owns the game. Wait for Steam to finish the add or installation operation, then check the Library.
- Open Library and search for the title. Use the Library search field or the appropriate collection view. The game should be listed under the account that was signed in during step 1.
If you only want to register the free title and install it later, use the page’s add or play option and stop after Steam confirms the game is associated with your account. The exact separation between registration and download varies by title and by Steam interface version. If Steam proceeds directly to installation, you can pause or postpone the download after the account action has completed, then verify the Library entry.

Website versus desktop client
You may discover the game in a web browser or in the Steam client. Either route should lead to the title’s Steam listing, but the displayed action can differ depending on whether the client is running and whether Steam already knows the title is in your Library. If a browser action asks you to continue in Steam, make sure the client opens under the intended account before accepting.
What to do when the game is already registered
If the page indicates that the title is already in your Library, do not try to claim it again. Open Library and search for it. The page may offer installation, launch, or another access action instead of an initial add action. That is normally a sign to verify visibility and filters, not to create another account.
How to find the claimed game in Steam Library
Search the Library directly
Open Steam’s Library and type the game’s name into the Library search field. Search for the full title first, then try a distinctive word if the title contains punctuation, a subtitle, or a regional spelling difference.
Look for the base game rather than a separate demo, soundtrack, or downloadable-content entry. If the title uses a different capitalization or subtitle in the Library, a shorter distinctive search term can be more effective than copying the full store-page name.
Clear filters and collection restrictions
Library filters can hide a game even when the account owns it. Remove genre, platform, installed-only, favorites, and custom-collection restrictions, then search again. A game that is registered but not installed may disappear when an “installed” filter is active.
Also check whether the Library is showing a particular collection rather than the complete list. A new claim may not be included in a custom collection until you add it, while an operating-system or device filter can hide a title that is not currently marked compatible with that view. Clear restrictions before concluding that the entitlement is absent.
Check Hidden Games
Steam provides a Hidden Games view. If the title was hidden previously, open the Library’s view or management controls, go to Hidden Games, select the title, and restore it to the normal Library view. The wording and location of these controls can vary with the current client interface.

Do not confuse installed files with ownership
Files on the disk do not by themselves prove that the signed-in account owns the game. Steam notes that a preload can exist even when the account does not own the game or no longer has access through Family Sharing. If the game appears installed but Steam will not launch it, verify the account and entitlement rather than assuming the installation is the claim.

The same caution applies after changing accounts on a shared computer. Steam may detect existing files and offer to use them, but the account still needs its own access. An installed folder can save a download without creating a new Library entitlement.
If the game is missing: troubleshoot in this order
- Verify the account. Sign out if necessary and sign back in to the account used when you added the game. This is the most important check because Libraries are account-specific.
- Check Library filters. Clear installed-only, favorites, collection, operating-system, and other filters. Search the complete title again.
- Inspect Hidden Games. Restore the title if it appears there.
- Return to the game’s Steam page. The page can show whether Steam treats the title as already in your Library, available to play, currently free, or subject to a promotion. If the offer has ended, the page may no longer provide the same access.
- Restart the session. For a completed purchase or activation that remains missing, Steam’s missing-Library guidance recommends signing out and back in. This can refresh the account state, but it is not a guarantee for every free-game visibility problem.
- Check whether the access was temporary. A trial, promotional weekend, or Family Sharing session can leave files installed while access has expired or changed.
- Contact Steam Support with the relevant account details. If the game was added through a key or purchase, keep the activation or transaction information available. Do not create a second claim on another account while trying to fix the first one; that can make account ownership harder to identify.
Steam’s official missing-Library article is written mainly for previously purchased or activated games. Its account, filter, hidden-game, and sign-in checks are sensible visibility checks for a free title, but none should be treated as a universal fix.
Separate visibility problems from access problems
A title can be absent from the visible Library because of a filter, or it can be visible but unavailable because a temporary offer ended or Family Sharing access changed. Those are different problems. First establish whether the title appears anywhere under the correct account; only then investigate launch or entitlement errors.
If the store page still describes the game as free to play but Library search remains empty after clearing filters and checking Hidden Games, sign out and back in once more. If the page instead identifies a trial or ended promotion, the missing permanent entitlement may be expected rather than a client failure.
Free-to-play claim versus other ways games appear in Steam

This distinction matters when a game is visible in your Library but does not behave like a Steam title. A non-Steam shortcut can provide convenient launching and overlay-related features, but it is not the same as claiming the game through its Steam store listing.
A product key is also not a substitute for the free-to-play route. Activate a key only through Steam’s product-activation process and only when the code is intended for Steam registration. A key can have its own validity or regional restrictions; a failed key does not show that the free store listing is unavailable.
Optional purchases inside free-to-play games
Some free-to-play games sell cosmetic items, characters, battle passes, boosts, currency, downloadable content, or other features. Those transactions are separate from the act of adding the base game. Steam’s stated position is that you are under no obligation to purchase anything from the Steam Store in order to play and progress through these games.
That statement does not mean every game has identical progression or monetization. Read the game’s own store description and in-game purchase information if you need to know what is optional, what is earned through play, and what may be limited to paid users.

Do not treat a purchase prompt as proof that the base game was not claimed. It may refer to optional content rather than access to the title itself. Conversely, buying an item inside a game does not move the game to another Steam account or replace the need to use the account that holds the entitlement.
Free games and Steam Limited User accounts
Adding or playing a free-to-play game does not, by itself, remove Steam’s Limited User restrictions. Steam’s currently published Limited User Accounts help page, accessed in October 2026, says an account must spend at least the equivalent of US$5 within the Steam Store for the listed community features to become available. Steam also lists free-to-play games and promotional trials among activity that does not count toward that threshold.
The US$5 figure is a policy threshold, not a fee required to claim a free-to-play game. Policies can change, and the qualifying-spend list is the controlling source if you are checking account restrictions at a later date. You can therefore claim and play a free-to-play title while still encountering Limited User restrictions on community features.
Practical checks before you finish
- You are signed in to the intended Steam account.
- You opened the official Steam listing for the exact title.
- The listing currently describes an ongoing free-to-play offer rather than a trial or temporary promotion.
- You used the listing’s add, play, or install action instead of adding only a local shortcut.
- The title appears in Library after filters are cleared.
- You checked Hidden Games if the title is not visible.
- You understand that installed files, a preload, or a Family Sharing copy do not necessarily prove account ownership.
- You know that optional in-game purchases are separate from claiming the base game.
- If you used a key, you activated a valid Steam-specific code on the intended account.
- You have not assumed that a purchase is required merely because the game offers optional items.
