Yes—you can usually secure a limited-time PC-game offer first and download the files later. The important step is claiming the promotion before its stated deadline so the game is added to the correct store account. On Epic Games Store, use the live Free Games page, sign in, and follow the current listing’s claim or add-to-library action. Epic’s support guidance says the game must be claimed within the indicated period; it does not say that installation must begin during that same period.
This guide uses Epic’s documented weekly giveaway as the clearest example, then separates it from free-to-play listings and optional Prime Gaming offers. Store interfaces and button names can change, so treat the live offer page as the authority for the exact final action.
What “claim without downloading” actually means
Claiming and downloading are two different account actions. Claiming records the promotion against your store account and places the game in that account’s library. Downloading transfers the game’s installation files to your computer so you can install and play it. For a limited-time giveaway, the deadline applies to the first action: you must complete the claim while the offer is active.

Once the title appears in the library, you can defer the storage space, bandwidth and installation until you are ready. - Claim: associate the promotion with the account you intend to use.
- Download: retrieve game files later, when you have time, bandwidth and storage.
- Play: install and launch the game when your hardware and any required software are ready.
Do not close the page merely because a price reads “Free.” First determine whether it is a time-limited giveaway that must be claimed, a permanently free-to-play listing, or another type of access grant.
The documented Epic Games Store method
Epic says its store provides a free game every week, with a new game on Thursday for Mobile and PC. Because the title, claim window and controls rotate, start from the current Epic Games Store Free Games page rather than an old article or a remembered deadline.
- Open the official free-games hub. Navigate to https://store.epicgames.com/FREE-GAMES?lang=en-US. Check that the page is showing the current promotion, not a cached screenshot or an expired listing.
- Sign in to the destination account. Use the Epic account whose library should contain the game. If more than one person uses the computer, verify the account name or profile before selecting any claim control. A claim made while signed in to the wrong account will not place the entitlement in the account you meant to use.
- Read the offer period. The listing should display when the giveaway starts and ends, or otherwise identify its active window. Record the ending date and time as shown on the live page. Epic describes free promotions as limited in duration, so do not assume that a title remains claimable until the next time you happen to visit.
- Choose the live listing’s claim action. Select the button or link that adds the offer to your library. Labels can vary with the current storefront design and device. Complete any sign-in or confirmation screen the page presents; stopping before the final confirmation may leave the game unclaimed.
- Confirm the library result. Look for an indication that the game was added to the account library rather than merely opened as a product page. If the page immediately presents installation, you can stop there after the library addition is confirmed. The goal is to finish the claim, not to start a download.
These steps describe the account outcome Epic documents. They do not establish that every giveaway can be claimed in exactly the same browser sequence without an installed launcher. If the current listing directs you to another approved sign-in or redemption surface, follow that live instruction and verify the final library status.

Check which kind of “free” you are seeing
Many mistakes happen because two different offers are described with the same word. Epic’s free-games page separates its weekly limited-time promotion from its free-to-play catalog.
Limited-time giveaway
A giveaway has a stated claim window. The game may be shown with a temporary zero price, but the important event is adding it to your library before the window closes. If you only visit the page after the deadline, the old free price is not restored merely because the game was previously promoted.

Free-to-play title
A free-to-play game is a category of game that can be downloaded and played without paying for the base access. It is not necessarily a weekly claim-and-keep promotion. Do not apply a Thursday deadline to every free-to-play listing. Steam’s support explanation likewise describes free-to-play titles as downloadable for free and playable without a subscription or credit card, but that information does not define Steam’s process for rotating paid-game giveaways.

After claiming, the practical objective is to leave the files untouched until your computer is ready. A simple checklist prevents the most common account mistake:
- Confirm the library is attached to the intended account, not a family member’s or a work account.
- Keep the claim confirmation or library entry visible long enough to verify that the promotion completed.
- Do not begin an installation solely to beat the promotional deadline; the deadline concerns claiming the offer.
- When you later decide to play, open the store’s library, select the claimed game and use the current install control.
- Before downloading, check available disk space, your connection and any system requirements shown on the game’s current page.
The last two checks are preparation advice, not additional eligibility rules. The account action is complete once the store records the game in the library. If an install button is not visible immediately, return to the library rather than assuming the claim failed; storefront pages often distinguish a product description from the account’s owned or claimed list.
Do you need the launcher or a browser?
The official material confirms the deadline and library result, but it does not establish one universal browser-only method for every Epic promotion. Some offers may expose a claim control on the web page; others may ask you to continue in an app or through a different redemption surface. The reliable rule is to use the live offer’s own options and finish at the point where the account library shows the game.

Do not treat an unofficial shortcut, an old button label or a third-party redemption guide as proof that the current offer works the same way. Store interfaces can change by device, region and account state. If the page asks you to sign in, complete that step before judging whether the promotion is available.
What to do if the offer has expired
Epic’s support guidance does not provide a retroactive way to claim a missed giveaway at its former free price. If the listing is outside its indicated period, the correct next step is to watch for future free promotions and special offers. Save the official free-games page and check it around the stated weekly release day rather than relying on a static list.
An expired page can still be useful for diagnosing what happened: compare the displayed end date with the time you attempted the claim, then check the library of the account you used. If the game is already present, no second claim is needed. If it is absent and the period has ended, wait for a future promotion or another legitimate offer instead of attempting to force the old price.
Prime Gaming is a separate route
Prime Gaming offers should not be confused with Epic’s weekly giveaway. Epic documents an optional account-linking route: sign in to Amazon, open its account-linking page, select Epic Games, and then view and claim eligible content from Prime Gaming. The exact game, eligibility rules, destination account and deadline belong to the individual Prime Gaming offer.
- Open the Amazon account-linking flow while signed in to the Amazon account that has the relevant benefit.
- Select Epic Games when the linking page asks which service to connect.
- Complete the authorization using the Epic account that should receive the redemption.
- Return to the specific Prime Gaming offer, read its redemption destination and expiry information, and follow that offer’s claim instructions.
- Verify where the content was delivered before closing the page; a Prime Gaming reward may have a different redemption path from an Epic weekly giveaway.
Prime membership may be required for a particular offer, but it is not required for Epic’s weekly free-game promotion. Do not buy a membership merely to claim the Epic giveaway. Check the current offer for its own eligibility and terms.

Epic’s account-linking instructions are at https://www.epicgames.com/help/c-Category_EpicAccounts/c-38854402/a10996998?lang=en-US. The support article explains the connection process; it is not a promise that every Prime Gaming item is a full PC game or that every item lands in the Epic library.
How to compare a free offer across stores
If you are deciding whether to claim an offer now or investigate another storefront, compare the account and access rules before clicking. “Free” alone does not tell you where the entitlement will live or how long the claim remains available.

The page shows a price instead of a claim control
First check the displayed promotion period. The giveaway may have ended, or you may be viewing a standard product page rather than the free-games hub. Open the official page again, sign in, and compare the listing’s end information with the current date and time. If the window has passed, Epic’s documented advice is to monitor future promotions.

Verify the account profile used during the claim and look for a completed confirmation. If you switched accounts in another browser tab, the claim may have been associated with the other profile. Reopen the library for the signed-in account and search by the exact title shown in the promotion. Do not start a second account-linking process until you know which account received the first attempt.

You see an install prompt and think the claim failed
An install prompt is not proof that you must download immediately. The relevant test is whether the game was added to the library. If it is present there, stop before installation and return later. If the library entry is missing, repeat the live page’s claim action while the offer is still active.
The offer asks for another service
Some partner promotions have their own eligibility and redemption destination. Read the individual offer instead of assuming it behaves like Epic’s weekly giveaway. For Prime Gaming, use the documented Amazon–Epic linking route and then verify where that particular reward is delivered.
You are checking an old article for the deadline
Rotating promotions make static dates unreliable. Use the live Epic page and its displayed claim period. A dated report can illustrate how quickly offers change, but it cannot replace the current listing.

PC Gamer reported on October 8, 2026 that Out of Sight and TerraScape were free to keep on Epic from October 8 through October 15, 2026. That window had already ended by the time this guide was prepared, so it is a historical illustration rather than a recommendation or current offer. The lesson is operational: open the live free-games page, read the current dates and claim the title during that window. Do not copy a past title or deadline into a new claim attempt.
