Choose winter tires in this order: verify your vehicle’s approved size and ratings, identify the winter hazards you actually face, then compare tires using the correct snow and ice markings. For severe snow, look for the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol. If ice is the recurring problem, check for an Ice Grip designation where available. Install four matching winter tires, follow the vehicle maker’s pressure and fitment instructions, and check local rules before choosing studs.
Start with fitment, not the tire name
A winter tire can have excellent snow credentials and still be wrong for your car. The first decisions come from the vehicle, not from a model name or a retailer filter.
Find the approved size
Read the tire placard on the driver-door jamb or consult the owner’s manual. Record the complete approved tire size, load specification and speed specification. The vehicle manufacturer’s information is the authority for wheel diameter, clearance and allowable alternatives.
If you are considering a narrower winter tire, a different wheel diameter, an alternate wheel package or a different speed rating, obtain vehicle-specific confirmation from the automaker or a qualified tire professional before ordering. A listing that says a tire is “winter” does not establish that it fits your particular year, trim, brakes or suspension.

Check all four positions
Do not choose a winter tire by matching only the front axle. Modern stability and traction systems are calibrated around the vehicle’s complete tire setup. Use a matched winter set of four unless your vehicle documentation explicitly gives another instruction. A NHTSA-hosted Tesla owner manual, for example, directs owners to install four winter tires together; your own manual takes precedence for your car.
Confirm wheel and clearance details
An alternate winter wheel can make seasonal changes easier, but the wheel still needs the correct bolt pattern, offset, load capacity, brake clearance and tire size. Never assume that a wheel that fits one trim fits every trim in the same model family.
Decide whether dedicated winter tires fit your climate
Winter tires are not automatically the best choice for every winter. Base the decision on the roads you regularly drive, not on the coldest possible day in your region.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFrequent deep or packed snow
NHTSA says winter tires are more effective than all-season tires in deep snow. If your commute, access road or mountain route routinely has deep, packed or uncleared snow, a dedicated winter set is the appropriate category to investigate. Use the 3PMSF marking as an initial severe-snow screen, then compare the tire maker’s application information.
Regular ice and freezing pavement
If glare ice, frozen intersections, refreezing bridges or persistent icy sections dominate your routes, prioritize ice-specific information rather than treating a snow label as a complete answer. Look for an Ice Grip designation where it is offered and read the manufacturer’s description of the tire’s intended use.
Mostly cold, wet or cleared roads
Some drivers see little snow but spend months on cold, wet pavement. Others encounter occasional light snow on roads that are cleared quickly. All-season tires cover a broad range of conditions, but “all-season” does not mean equivalent severe-winter performance. Compare the frequency and severity of your actual exposure with the dry-road compromises of a winter set.
Occasional snow in a mild region
When snow is rare and routes are normally clear, a dedicated set may provide less practical benefit than it would for a driver who repeatedly travels through snow or ice. Still check the vehicle maker’s guidance and local weather patterns; tire choice is climate-dependent rather than universal.

| Marking | What it tells you | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| 3PMSF (three-peak mountain snowflake) | Michelin describes it as the severe-snow traction marking. It is the relevant first filter when deep or severe snow is a regular concern. | It is not a promise that the tire is best on every kind of ice, slush, dry pavement or vehicle. |
| M+S (mud and snow) | A designation used on some tires intended for mud and snow conditions. | M+S alone is not proof of the severe-winter capability represented by 3PMSF. |
| Ice Grip | Michelin and the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association describe it as a separate ice-related designation where available. | It does not replace fitment checks or establish a universal ranking among all tires carrying the mark. |
Why M+S is not enough
Many drivers see “M+S” and assume it means a tire is a dedicated severe-winter tire. That is too broad. Use 3PMSF for severe-snow screening, and treat M+S by itself as insufficient evidence when deep snow is a central requirement.
Use markings with application details
After screening by symbols, read the manufacturer’s size-specific and application-specific information. Two tires with the same symbol can be designed for different balances of snow, ice, wet-road behavior and dry-road comfort. The symbol narrows the field; it does not make the buying decision for you.
Match the tire to the dominant hazard
Write down the worst conditions you encounter in a normal season and rank them. This simple exercise prevents choosing for an imagined climate instead of your real routes.

Deep, loose snow
Prioritize a correctly sized tire carrying the 3PMSF marking and described for severe-snow use. Check whether your vehicle’s wheel wells and suspension allow the chosen size without rubbing, especially if you are considering an alternate wheel.
Packed snow and repeated snow days
Look for 3PMSF and compare the maker’s information for repeated winter service. A full set of four matters because the vehicle’s balance and electronic stability systems depend on consistent tire behavior across axles.
Glare ice and frozen intersections
Seek an Ice Grip designation where available, then examine the tire’s application information for icy conditions. Reduce speed and increase following distance regardless of the symbol; no marking makes an icy road safe at normal dry-road speeds.
Slush and rapidly changing conditions
Consider a tire identified for snow use while checking wet-road guidance and your route’s drainage. Slush can conceal standing water and lane markings, so a winter designation should be paired with conservative driving and adequate tread condition.

Choose studded or studless tires carefully
Studs are a local, conditional choice, not a universal upgrade.
When studs may make sense
Studded tires can be useful in some places where polished ice is frequent and persistent. Their value depends on the surfaces you actually drive and the legal window for their use.
Check the law before shopping
Studded-tire rules vary by jurisdiction, including U.S. state rules. Confirm the current requirements where the vehicle will be driven. Rules can specify dates, road restrictions or exceptions, and a tire that is legal in one state may not be legal in another.
Account for the trade-offs
- Noise: studs can be louder on clear pavement.
- Dry-road behavior: winter tires, including studded designs, can provide less dry-road traction than a warm-weather tire; a Tesla manual also notes reduced dry-road traction for winter tires generally.
- Road wear: studs can contribute to pavement wear, which is one reason jurisdictions regulate them.
- Seasonal timing: using them outside the permitted period can create legal and practical problems.
If your routes are mostly bare pavement with occasional snow, a studless winter tire may avoid unnecessary noise and road-wear compromises. The available evidence does not establish one option as universally superior.
Build a shortlist with a consistent comparison
Once you know the vehicle specification and dominant hazard, compare candidates using the same criteria.
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer | Evidence to use |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle fit | Does the exact size meet the placard or manual’s load and speed requirements? Is wheel and brake clearance confirmed? | Vehicle documentation and manufacturer fitment guidance. |
| Snow capability | Does it carry 3PMSF? Is it described for the kind of deep or packed snow you drive in? | Sidewall marking plus the tire maker’s application information. |
| Ice capability | Is an Ice Grip designation available? Is the tire intended for frequent ice? | Marking and tire-specific information; do not infer a universal ranking. |
| Local conditions | How often do you encounter snow, ice, slush and cold wet pavement, and how quickly are roads cleared? | Your route history and local weather patterns. |
| Studded or studless | Are studs legal where you drive, and do their ice benefit outweigh noise and road-wear concerns? | Current jurisdiction rules and your actual route. |
| Ownership trade-offs | Can you accept more road noise, shorter tread life or less dry-road traction? | Vehicle documentation and the tire maker’s stated characteristics. |
Do not compare only by price
Prices, inventory and available sizes change by region and date. A cheaper tire in the wrong approved size is not a bargain, and a premium-priced tire is not automatically the best match for your climate. Compare complete, vehicle-compatible sets and include seasonal mounting, balancing, storage and any second-wheel costs in your budget.
Install a complete set and set it up correctly
- Verify the order: Match the tire size, load rating and speed rating to the vehicle documentation before installation.
- Install four matching winter tires: Do not mix a winter tire on one axle with a different category on the other unless the vehicle maker specifically permits that arrangement.
- Use approved wheels: Confirm wheel dimensions, offset, load capacity and brake clearance if using a second set.
- Set pressure to the vehicle specification: Use the pressure shown on the door placard or in the manual, not the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall.
- Check condition after installation: Inspect for damage, unusual wear and adequate tread condition. Follow the vehicle maker’s inspection and rotation guidance.
- Recheck after seasonal changes: Temperature changes affect pressure. Check pressures whenever the winter set is installed and during the season according to the vehicle manual.
Understand the normal compromises
The NHTSA-hosted Tesla manual notes that winter tires can bring more road noise, shorter tread life and less traction on dry roads. Those are ownership considerations, not proof that a particular tire is defective. Vehicle-specific instructions may differ, so do not generalize one manual’s details beyond the vehicle it covers.

Know when chains are relevant
Some routes require or permit snow chains during severe conditions. Use only chains approved for the exact vehicle, tire size and wheel clearance. A Tesla manual’s tested or approved chain guidance applies to the vehicle covered by that manual and must not be treated as approval for another car. Check local requirements and practice installation before an emergency if chains are part of your route plan.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A real product example, not a universal recommendation
Michelin lists the MICHELIN X-Ice Snow as a studless winter tire displaying both 3PMSF and Ice Grip markings. The manufacturer presents size-specific listings, so a reader must enter the vehicle details and verify the exact size before purchase. This example demonstrates how to read a product listing; it does not establish that the model is the best choice for every car, climate or driving pattern.
Use safety statistics in the right context
NHTSA reports that in 2023, 320 fatal traffic crashes and an estimated 22,293 injury crashes occurred when snow or sleet conditions were present at the time. These figures describe the recorded conditions at crash time. They do not show that tire choice alone caused or prevented the crashes, and they should not be used to promise a specific safety result from any tire.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying by model name alone
Problem: A familiar model may not be offered in your approved size or rating.
Fix: Start with the placard and manual, then filter products by exact fitment.
Treating M+S as severe-winter proof
Problem: M+S does not substitute for the severe-snow meaning of 3PMSF.
Fix: Require 3PMSF when severe snow is a regular part of the route.
Putting winter tires on only one axle
Problem: Mixed tire categories can create inconsistent handling and conflict with vehicle guidance.

Fix: Install a matched set of four unless your vehicle documentation says otherwise.
Ignoring local stud rules
Problem: Stud legality varies by jurisdiction and may be seasonal.
Fix: Check the current rule for every jurisdiction where you will drive before buying.
Assuming a symbol guarantees performance
Problem: Markings do not account for every car, pavement or weather condition.
Fix: Combine the marking with fitment, application information and realistic driving behavior.
Using the wrong pressure
Problem: Setting pressure from the sidewall maximum can disagree with the vehicle’s engineered specification.
Fix: Use the door placard or owner’s manual and recheck as temperatures change.
A practical decision checklist
- Have you recorded the exact approved size, load rating and speed rating?
- Does the candidate fit the vehicle’s wheels, brakes and clearance?
- Are deep snow, packed snow, ice, slush or cold wet pavement the dominant hazards?
- Does severe snow make 3PMSF essential for your shortlist?
- Is an Ice Grip designation relevant and available for your size?
- Have you separated M+S from 3PMSF instead of treating them as equivalent?
- Are studs legal where you drive, and are their trade-offs justified by your routes?
- Will you install four matching winter tires?
- Have you confirmed pressure, wheel and chain instructions in your vehicle manual?
- Have you allowed for seasonal installation, storage and changing availability?
Bottom line for choosing your set
The safest selection process is vehicle-first and hazard-specific: use the placard and manual to establish fit, choose 3PMSF for regular severe snow, investigate Ice Grip information when ice dominates, and treat studs as a locally regulated option. Install four matching tires, maintain the vehicle-specified pressure and verify every alternate wheel or chain choice for your exact car. No symbol or product name can replace that sequence.
