Choose the alt that serves the activity you actually want to do next—not a class that someone labels universally best. Start by naming your goal, inspect Warband and Journeys progress, then compare class playstyle, group role, character-specific readiness, story interest, and available play time. In Midnight, every character begins in Eversong Woods, but the campaign lets you choose what comes next, so your route can follow your interests rather than a mandatory order.
Use this decision order before creating a leveling plan
The most reliable answer to “Which WoW alt should I level next?” comes from your next play goal. A roster can contain several technically viable characters, but only one may fit what you want to do this week. Decide in this order so account-wide progress does not distract you from the reason you are leveling.
1. Name the activity you want from the alt
Pick one primary goal. Common goals include seeing a Midnight story path, learning a class or specialization, filling a tank, healer, or damage role for friends, or continuing character-specific progress toward an activity you already enjoy. If two goals compete, choose the one that determines what you will do immediately after reaching the required level. “I want a different class” is useful, but “I want a character ready for group play with my friends on weekends” gives you a better filter.

That is not an objective ranking. Blizzard’s published material does not establish a universally best class, specialization, or role for leveling, and it does not provide comparative leveling times by class or route.

2. Audit your roster before repeating work
Open the Warband-related account information and the in-game Journeys feature on your existing characters. Warbands are intended to make switching characters easier by sharing many forms of progression, collections, and items. However, Blizzard also identifies high-end gearing and other progression as character-specific. Journeys can help you see current progress for systems such as Renown, Delves, Prey, and Great Vault rewards.
This check answers two practical questions: what your account already owns, and what the candidate character still needs to do itself. Do not assume that every reward or track is shared, and do not assume that an alt must repeat a task just because your memory says it did on an earlier character. Verify the current status in the game.
3. Shortlist two or three candidates
Put only realistic options on the shortlist. A candidate should satisfy the class or role you want, fit the story or route you are willing to play, and have a plausible path to the activity that motivated the decision. A large roster can make every character look equally urgent; limiting the list forces a useful comparison.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Choose a route and schedule that you will actually finish
Midnight gives you several campaign choices after the opening zone. Select the route that matches your interest and the amount of focused play time you have. A character you enjoy enough to log in with consistently is more valuable than a theoretically efficient choice you abandon after a few sessions.
What Midnight changes about alt leveling
Every new character starts in Eversong Woods
Blizzard’s Midnight launch announcement says, “You’ll first begin your journey in Eversong Woods, but it’s up to you how your story progresses beyond this first zone.” The opening is therefore a common starting point, not a promise that every alt must follow one fixed campaign sequence.
Three campaign directions are available after the opening
Beyond Eversong Woods, you can take three paths in any order:
| Path | What it centers on | Who may prefer it |
|---|---|---|
| Zul’Aman | The ancient troll kingdom | Players most interested in that setting, its history, or the associated storyline |
| Harandar | The Harandar zone and its narrative | Players who want to explore that region first |
| Arator’s journey | Arator’s family and the Light | Players who want to follow that character-focused plot |
The order is a preference decision. Nothing in the cited launch material establishes one of these paths as the fastest, strongest, or mandatory first choice. Pick the one that makes you want to continue the character.

Midnight’s content update raises the level cap to 90 and adds four new or reimagined zones. That gives an alt a clear expansion-level destination, but it does not make every route or class equally suitable for every player. Treat the cap as the threshold for your intended endgame activity, then work backward from that activity when planning the character.
Chromie Time remains an alternative leveling experience
Blizzard’s updated player guidance says established players can bypass Exile’s Reach and use Chromie Time to choose an expansion to play first. For an experienced account, the expansion you level through can therefore be a story and experience preference. Current in-game eligibility and rules still apply, so check the options offered by the game rather than relying on an old guide.
New players receive a more structured introduction through Exile’s Reach and Dragonflight. If you are helping someone new to the game, do not assume that the established-player route applies to them. Their onboarding path is intentionally more guided.
Compare candidates on the six factors that matter
Use the same questions for every candidate. These are practical decision axes, not official scores or a Blizzard ranking.
Class and specialization gameplay
Ask whether you want a familiar toolset or a deliberate change. A familiar class may let you concentrate on the story and route; a less familiar one can make the alt feel genuinely different. Consider the specialization you expect to play most often, not only the class name. If you are undecided between specializations, choose the character whose available options give you a fallback you would enjoy.
Do not select a class solely because an outside tier list calls it the best leveling class. The official information available for Midnight does not provide a measured comparison of leveling speed by class or specialization. Your comfort with the controls and your willingness to keep playing are stronger evidence for this decision.
Group role and friends’ needs
A tank, healer, or damage character that fits your regular group can be a sensible choice. Confirm what your friends actually need and whether you enjoy performing that role. Group demand is a tie-breaker, not a reason to force yourself into a role you dislike. If your group’s schedule changes, the value of that choice can change too.
Character-specific readiness
Inspect the candidate’s own progress toward the activity you care about. Character-specific gearing and other progression may mean that a high-level alt is not immediately interchangeable with your current character. Journeys provides a way to identify relevant progress rather than guessing from the character’s level alone.
Story and zone interest
Interest is a legitimate efficiency tool. If Zul’Aman, Harandar, or Arator’s story is the reason you are logging in, put that path first. The ability to take the three post-Eversong paths in any order means you can align the route with the character’s purpose instead of replaying a prescribed sequence.
Available play time
Match the character to the sessions you can reliably schedule. With short sessions, choose a goal that gives you a clear stopping point and avoid planning around content you cannot reach before your next break. With longer sessions, you can combine campaign quests with the progression tracks you intend to keep on that character. The correct choice is the one that remains enjoyable when your real schedule, rather than an idealized schedule, is applied.
Shared rewards and account progress
Before repeating a collection or reward activity, determine whether the result is already available through your Warband. Shared progress can remove unnecessary repetition, while character-specific systems can still require work on the new alt. Record the distinction in your own notes so you do not spend a session chasing something the account already has—or assume that an account-wide unlock replaces a character’s own requirement.

Choose the alt by the goal you have today
If the goal is to experience Midnight’s story
Choose the character whose class fantasy and narrative perspective make you most interested in the campaign. Begin in Eversong Woods, then select Zul’Aman, Harandar, or Arator’s journey according to the story you want first. Because the three paths can be taken in any order, you can reserve the other routes for later alts or return to them when your priorities change.
If the goal is to learn a different class
Choose the specialization you are genuinely curious about and decide whether you want a familiar leveling environment or a different expansion through Chromie Time. Use Warband information to avoid re-earning shared collections and inspect Journeys to see which character-specific tracks will still require attention. Do not let a claim about the “fastest” class override your willingness to practice it; no measured class-by-class leveling comparison is established in the current official material.
If the goal is to support a regular group
Start with the role your friends need, then remove any class you would not enjoy playing for an entire campaign. Ask what activity the group actually plans to run and what level threshold it expects. If the role is flexible, choose the candidate with the stronger combination of class interest and existing character-specific progress.

If the goal is progress on a particular activity
Identify the exact character-specific requirements first. A Warband collection or account-wide item may already be available, but high-end gearing and other progression can remain tied to the individual character. Use Journeys to inspect Renown, Delves, Prey, Great Vault rewards, and other tracked progress relevant to your plan. The alt that appears less advanced by level may still be the better starting point if its activity-specific work is already complete.
If you simply want a change of pace
Do not over-optimize. Pick the character whose controls, visual theme, or story route you are most excited to play. A change-of-pace alt succeeds when it keeps the game enjoyable; account-wide conveniences make it easier to move between characters later.
Planning around dungeon access
Dungeons are a common reason to level an alt, and Midnight has two relevant unlock rules. Blizzard states that storyline quests can make individual Midnight dungeons available earlier. If you value seeing the story and want those earlier individual unlocks, complete the associated quests on the character.
Blizzard also states that all dungeons become available at level 90 whether those storyline quests are complete or not. If your priority is reaching the level threshold and entering the full dungeon pool, plan around level 90 instead of treating every quest unlock as mandatory. This distinction lets you choose between a story-first route and a threshold-first route without confusing the two goals.

- Story-first dungeon plan: Follow the relevant campaign quests and accept that your route is also serving narrative progression.
- Threshold-first dungeon plan: Level toward 90 and use the level-based unlock rule as your endpoint, completing extra storyline quests only when they serve another purpose.
- Group-schedule plan: Coordinate with friends about the level and dungeon access they expect, then choose the route that fits the shared session.
How Warbands and Journeys should change your decision
Separate account convenience from character readiness
Warbands are designed to make changing characters easier. Shared collections, items, and other progression can make a new alt feel less like starting from zero. That convenience does not erase every character-specific task. Treat the Warband as an account-level foundation and the candidate character as a separate project with its own readiness checks.
Use Journeys as a verification screen
Journeys is especially useful when your memory is unreliable after leveling several characters. Check the entries relevant to the activity you want, including Renown, Delves, Prey, and Great Vault rewards. Note what is complete, what is shared, and what still needs to be done on the candidate. This prevents two opposite mistakes: repeating an account-level task unnecessarily and assuming an incomplete character-specific track is finished.
Do not pick an alt only because it has the highest level
Level is one readiness signal, not the complete decision. A lower-level character with the class, role, and story you want may be the better next project. Conversely, a high-level character may still need individual gearing or other progression before it can perform the intended activity. Let the activity-specific audit decide when the candidates are otherwise close.

For established players
Existing players can bypass Exile’s Reach and use Chromie Time to select an expansion to play first, subject to the current in-game rules. This makes route selection a matter of taste and learning goals. If you already understand the basic systems, choose the expansion or Midnight path that keeps you engaged while you build the new character.

For new players
Blizzard’s updated guidance gives new players a guided path through Exile’s Reach and Dragonflight. If you are choosing an alt for a new account, first determine whether the account qualifies for the established-player options. A new player may benefit from following the recommended onboarding sequence before experimenting with alternate routes.
For a veteran helping a new player
Coordinate expectations before choosing the alt. The experienced player may have account-wide collections and a broad roster, while the new player is still learning the structured introduction. Pick a character and route that let both players understand what is happening rather than assuming the veteran’s shortcuts apply to the new account.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Mistake: searching for the objectively best alt
Correction: Define the activity first. Official sources do not establish a universal best class, specialization, or leveling route, so a ranking without your goal cannot answer your question.
Mistake: treating the campaign as one fixed order
Correction: After Eversong Woods, choose among Zul’Aman, Harandar, and Arator’s journey in any order. Pick the path that fits the character’s purpose.
Mistake: assuming Warband means everything is account-wide
Correction: Verify each reward and progression track. Many collections, items, and forms of progress are shared, while high-end gearing and other progression remain character-specific.
Best Value
Mistake: ignoring Journeys
Correction: Check Journeys before repeating Renown, Delves, Prey, Great Vault, or another tracked activity. Use the game’s current status instead of memory.
Mistake: choosing a role your group needs but you dislike
Correction: Treat group demand as a tie-breaker. A role only helps if you are willing to keep playing it.
Mistake: confusing early dungeon quests with the complete dungeon unlock
Correction: Storyline quests can unlock individual Midnight dungeons earlier, while all dungeons open at level 90 whether those quests are complete. Choose the rule that matches your priority.
Mistake: planning with an old guide
Correction: Confirm current Chromie Time eligibility, onboarding rules, level requirements, and progression status in-game. Midnight’s systems and labels can change, so an older route may no longer describe your account.
When can or should I start leveling an alt?
You can start when your current character no longer serves your immediate goal, not only after reaching an arbitrary completion point. If you want a different class, a new story path, or a group role, begin once you have checked the Warband and Journeys status that will prevent avoidable repetition. If your main character is close to a time-sensitive group objective, finish or schedule that objective first; otherwise, switching now is reasonable because Warbands are intended to reduce the friction of moving between characters.
Use a small commitment test: decide which path you will take after Eversong Woods, identify the first activity you want at level 90, and make sure the candidate’s class and role still appeal to you. If those answers are clear, you are ready to level the alt.
Revisit the choice instead of treating it as permanent
An alt is a next project, not a lifetime contract. Your friends’ group composition, preferred activity, available time, or interest in the Midnight stories can change. Warband conveniences make it practical to move between characters, while character-specific progression gives each one a distinct reason to play. Recheck the same six factors when your goal changes, then select the character that best fits the new activity.
